The system of mining statistics for Canada, as it exists today, represents the result of long years of progress, first by the Geological Survey, later and more comprehensively by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines, and now by the Mining Branch of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics-all supplemented by the very comprehensive reports published by the several provincial departments of mines. It is the purpose of this paper briefly to state the development and present status of Canada's statistical service, more particularly in regard to information on mineral production, and to show that in its evolution continuous progress has been made in the elimination of factors tending to duplication and overlaping, with the result that the construction of an adequate statistical service has been carried out with the least possible expenditure of .public funds. For the purpose of this discussion, the subject of mineral statistics may conveniently be considered from two points of view. The technical difficulties in obtaining satisfactory and complete data from the variety of industries represented in the mining fields of Canada must be apparent to all. Methods of record-keeping are almost as numerous as mines and even the larger concerns which maintain elaborate records for their own information, often find it difficult to compile the statistical reports required of them, because the specific form of inquiry differs from the method in use in their offices.

"This case study produced for the metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, which has ventilation controlled manually and working continuously at maximum speed to keep air flowing through each part of the mine 24 hours a day. The mine auxiliary ventilation has been designed with the maximum length of ducting systems with extra air volumes to compensate for potential leakage. The mine provided auxiliary ventilation to all production stopes even to those, which for various operating reasons become temporarily inactive. However, mine safety has to consider risks associated with the deficit of fresh air for mine gases dilution and removal. The mine needs additional investments for re-designing ventilation network and therefore needs to estimate financial risks associated with it. The aim of this study is to conduct risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes at the operational metal mine in Kazakhstan. Mine ventilation surveys were undertaken for validation of the computerised ventilation model. The mine ventilation network modelling has been undertaken to be compliant with Kazakhstan mining regulations. Results of the mine ventilation optimisation processes were analysed in terms of financial risks for investments into reconstruction of the ventilation shafts, extension of the ventilation network, variable speed fans and automated regulators. Savings were resulted from improving ventilation system efficiency by reduce airflow in areas without mining activity and redistributing existing ventilation capacity. Based on savings derived from the optimised ventilation network an additional NPV has been received. Stochastic modelling use Monte Carlo simulation producing representation of possible outcomes for the additional NPV considering electricity pricing as a major variability. As result probability distribution for the optimised ventilation network demonstrates the additional NPV in a range of 1.6 - 2.2 million US$ in the corresponding defined value of 90%. Moreover, there is only 5% chance that the additional NPV to be less than 1.5 million US$. Conducted risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes gives considerations on volume of investments into the mine ventilation system.INTRODUCTIONCosts for mine ventilation are typically increasing when mines expand to deep levels. Some underground mines in Kazakhstan still use continuously operating fans at its maximum capacity. This is not helping to save energy and costs that are in many cases very significant. "Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). ABSTRACT The comparative economics of ion exchange and direct precipitation have been analyzed by developing indicative CAPEX/OPEX models for typical alkaline leach uranium circuits. An agitated tank ore leach application is considered, comparing resin-in-pulp and direct precipitation as recovery options. Capital and operating cost estimates are derived from rates and factors used in recent studies and projects. The analysis showed the main economic drivers to be the ore grade and resin loading. The resin loading is impacted by the prevalence of competing ions, especially chloride. At resin-in-pulp solution chloride concentrations below 3 g/L and uranium grade below 640 g/t U3O8, resin-in-pulp is more economical, whereas at chloride concentrations above 3 g/L, direct precipitation is more economical.

In order to evaluate the properties of coating materials for BOF, the effects of dolomites (dolomite and light burned dolomite) addition on durability of coating materials were investigated. In all coating materials, matrix was dicalcium ferrite(C2F) and both free MgO and dicalcium silicate(C2S) were precipitated. Fe203 content must be controlled to improve the adhesion and durability of coating materials for BOF during oxygen blowing process. The amount of dolomites added to BOF slag must be controlled in optimum condition with high refractoriness of C2S to improve the adhesion of coating materials for BOF. The weight ratio of converter slag to dolomite must be below 8 to improve the adhesion and durability of coating materials simultaneously.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

"In 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) commissioned a new silver electrorefining circuit. This circuit was intended to operate with a minimal electrolyte bleed for the control of copper. However, by the time of start-up, the levels of copper-rich silver doré to electrorefining had increased, and despite partial pyro-conversion in a small Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC), copper concentration in the silver anode still averaged 7.5%. This necessitated frequent replenishment of the electrolyte with fresh silver nitrate since copper displaced dissolved silver during electrolysis, and therefore requiring a robust copper bleed treatment step in order to maintain cathode silver flake purity at 99.99%. The originally-installed bleed treatment system could not meet the RCM’s needs. A thorough review of known technologies, however, did not indicate one capable of handling the copper load, and resulted, therefore, in the development of a novel copper hydrolysis approach for removal of copper as an insoluble basic nitrate salt, and recovery of the associated nitric acid for re-use in the circuit. Laboratory-scale trials showed reproducible results, and existing equipment was subsequently modified.INTRODUCTIONIn 2005, the introduction of a new silver electrorefining circuit at the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) initiated changes in the way customer silver, collected from the gold doré circuit, was processed. These circuit changes were discussed in a recent paper (Aprahamian, 2015). A wastewater treatment plant had not been budgeted at the time, and this represented a significant constraint when considering the introduction of a wet processing circuit. After a review of various options, a turnkey silver electrorefining circuit was purchased from a European firm. Initially, enough cells were ordered to produce 2 million oz of fine silver (999), with the option to increase to 5 million oz. The selected equipment was based on a Moebius cell design combined with a silver grain pressure dissolver to produce make-up silver nitrate solution. Additionally, an evaporator/hydrolysis unit included in the package appealed to the Mint Refinery, on the basis that it offered a simple way to bleed dissolved copper in electrolyte without generating effluent."

Introduction Within the last quarter of a century the Lake St. John-Saguenay valley has been converted from a quiet agricultural district to one of the important industrial centres in the Dominion. First there was the expansion -of the pulp and paper industry, and then, starting a little over ten years, ago, the development, in large .blocks, of the enormous hydro-electric power resources of the Saguenay river. Coincident with this power development, the world aluminum industry was rapidly expanding and looking for a new source of cheap power. This was found in the Saguenay valley-and so, in 1925, Arvida was established by the Aluminum Company of Canada as a location for one of the largest aluminum plants in the world. Arvida, an incorporated city comprising an area of some ten square miles, is ideally located on a more or less level plateau about 350 feet above the Saguenay river. Seldom has industry stepped boldly forth and carved out of Nature a community with full city status. The process usually goes through the steps of camp, village, town, and city, involving improper planning or lack of planning; all of which has been avoided at Arvida by starting out in the right way. While this community has only a population of approximately 2,000 at the present time, it is carefully planned for a population many times this figure. Streets, city parks, business and residential sections, have been definitely planned, and, with a City government, proper ordinances were passed at the beginning to ensure the building and maintenance of a model industrial community. As the crow flies, Arvida is about 35 miles due east of lake St. John, and 0 miles west of the St. Lawrence river at Tadoussac. From a shipping standpoint, it is well served by the Canadian National railways, with direct lines to Quebec and Montreal, and by ocean shipping facilities at Port Alfred, which is about 15 miles to the east on the Saguenay river and is served by the Roberval & Saguenay railway. The latter has interchange connections with the Canadian National at Arivda, and also operates a branch line into the city of Chicoutimi.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. "There is renewed interest in the improvement of existing copper smelting processes and the development of new technologies. It has become clear that further accurate information on slag properties, in particular, on phase equilibria are required in order to optimize these processes. It is in this context that improved experimental research methodologies have been developed specifically to provide information on phase equilibria at the oxygen partial pressures encountered in copper smelting practice. The methodology involves synthetic slag equilibration at controlled gas atmospheres, quenching and measurement of compositions of phases with an electron probe X-ray microanalyser (EPMA) with wavelength dispersive detectors (WDD). Application of modem analytical tools and careful design of experiments greatly improve accuracy of determination of phase equilibria in complex, multi-phase slag systems. New experimental data on phase equilibria for the copper smelting and converting silicate slags at controlled oxygen partial pressures in the temperature range between 1200°C and 1350°C in the ""Fe0""-Ca0-SiO2 system and in the ""Cu20""-""Fe0""-Ca0-Si02 system in equilibrium with metallic copper are reported, and differences between various data sources are analyzed."

Extensive experimental observations have been performed around drifts and shafts at the Meuse Haute-Marne (North-Eastern France) Underground Research Laboratory (URL) to assess the extent and pattern of the induced fracture networks in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Two types of fractures can be distinguished, namely; shear (mode II) and extension unloading (mode I) fractures. The main goal of the present paper is to provide insights on the extent of damaged zone around the drifts by numerical simulations. A two-step approach is considered. First, 2D elastic calculations are performed for simulating the excavation of a drift following the direction of the major in situ horizontal stress. The evolution of the stress and strain tensors around drifts are calculated by applying an elliptic convergence function on the drift wall. Two failure criteria are then verified for the induced damage. An equivalent strain and an elastic energy based damage criteria are considered. The obtained results show that the employed simplified approach provides rather good results for the extent of the damaged zone for drifts parallel to major horizontal stress. However, post-processing elastic results leads to overestimating the vertical extent of the damage zone and underestimating its lateral extent, where the in situ stress state is quasi-isotropic in a section of drift. Nevertheless, the obtained results show that an energy based damage criterion could be considered as a potential way for reproducing the extent of the damaged zones if a convergence function can be defined for the drift.

The Magdalen Islands archipelago, a cluster of fifteen islands, is located near the centre of the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the thickest portion of the Carboniferous Fundy Basin of the Maritime Pro vinces. The bedrock of the Magdalen Platform includes a thick succession of evaporites of Visean Age, occurring as a series of thickenings, ridges, domes and diapirs reaching a probable vertical thickness of close to 6000 m. The emplacement of 1hese salt structures by flowage has much dislurbed 1he SlrOligraphic sequence of the rocks of the Windsor Group, particularly 1he Havre-aux-Maisons Formation. Subsequent tectonic movemenl has broken the overlying Cap-auxMeules Forma1ion info an assemblage of panels and blocks now slightly tilted. Following detailed gravimetric surveys and more than 30,000 m of diamond drilling, SOQUEM has discovered, at various dep1hs, seven salt domes on four of 1he main islands of the archipelago. These evaporite bodies generally are localized near the cemre of complex anticlinal struclUres where diapiric movements and faulting have disturbed the original stratigraphic succession. At Rocher du Dauphin near Grosse 1/e, in 1he northern part of the archipelago, Seleine a SOQUEM subsidiary is developing a mining complex with an annual capaci1y of 1,250,000 1onnes of deicing salt for 1he Canadian and Eas1ern United Swtes marke1s. The stan of operations is scheduled for April 1982.

"Beneficiation of low grade ores is the process of increasing the grade of a mineral through unit operations that remove and separate the waste (or gangue) material from the valuable mineral that can then be used for further processing or direct use. Important factors when deciding upon a beneficiation program are the feed grade, mass yield and the metal recovery. As lower grade ores are being processed beneficiation is a critical process. How predictive is laboratory test work for “as built” operating projects? Beneficiation includes all or some of the available unit operations to produce a beneficiation flow sheet i.e. associated unit operations including but not limited to optical sorting, radiometric sorting, crushing and screening, coarse cobbing, jigging, dense media separation (DMS), spirals, magnetic separation, flotation, thickening, filtering and drying. Reference to specific projects and the approach developed in formulating a beneficiation flow sheet and a comparison of difficult and simple beneficiation flow sheets are cited. INTRODUCTIONReserves of high-grade iron ores are reducing all over the world, at an alarming rate, over the years as a result of the rapid increase in demand for steel particularly from Japan and then China. The recovery of mineral value from the low-grade ores using present technology is more expensive than DSO ores due to high energy and capital costs. Beneficiation is defined as a variety of processes whereby extracted ore from mining is reduced to particles that can be separated into mineral and waste.Various physical properties of an ore can be exploited to separate a low grade fraction including variation in hardness, density, reflectance, conductivity and magnetism.""Beneficiation"" of iron ores includes concentration, generally by physical removal of unwanted gangue. Also considered beneficiation is the regulation of product size, or other steps such as agglomeration to improve its chemical or physical characteristics prior to smelting."

"Mine tunneling applications are sensitive to the leakage and friction performance of ducting systems. Improvements in performance can help project economics through reduction in drift height, booster fan spacing, fan electrical power requirement, and deferral of ventilation raise construction. Semirigid plastic ducting has enjoyed significant adoption in mine tunneling in recent years. This paper explores technical properties and performance aspects of this relatively new material application.INTRODUCTIONUnderground mining projects are sensitive to mine development cost and schedule to meet first production—both of which are defined to a substantial extent by mine access construction. The very nature of mine access development requires driving accesses into new areas and even mechanized and automated tunneling methods require ventilation. Until underground airways are connected, allowing a flow-through circuit, ducted ventilation is required to establish ventilation within any single-access (i.e.: dead-end) heading. See Figure 1 as an example of ducted ventilation. Improving performance of ducted ventilation systems impacts project cost and schedule in several ways:For drifts whose height is defined by overhead clearance above haul trucks or tall equipment, smaller diameter ducting will decrease heading size.With higher ventilation flows, activities can be less ventilation-constricted; secondary headings can be worked without restriction, which improves schedule.Given the ability to provide more air for a given fan power, blasting gasses can clear the face and mine more quickly so crews can return to work more quickly - allowing higher advance rates.Lower electrical costs – both due to lower power consumed by fans and with the requirement for fewer electrical stations to power booster fans."

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

Sustainable development has become a driving imperative for the resource industry as it is for the rest of the global business world. Being unsustainable is a risk no business can afford. Yet implementation of sustainable development practices beyond satisfaction of compulsory reporting is still sporadic. The current standard approaches to problem analysis and decision making are too narrow to capture the complexity of the issues at stake. Hence it is necessary to develop innovation in thinking and in doing. Those who search for ways to implement sustainable development use concepts such as Whole Systems Thinking and Eco-efficiency as well as tools like Life Cycle Analysis. Others develop their own instruments. In their effort to innovate they face both resistance and support within their organisation as well as within the industry or the wider context. This paper explores the factors that support, hinder and shape the sustainable development drive of the industry and proposes a comprehensive decision-making framework that links the goal of sustainability with the tools of sustainable development. This exploration is illustrated by a case study used in a doctoral research conducted on an engineering firm providing services to our industry.

The principle of operation of the dredging system is explained, and the factors which determine the equipment size and the power required for varying mining rates and depths of water are discussed. An estimate of the capital and operating cost of a commercial-scale mining system is presented.

This paper deals with the flow of granular materials in bins. A hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian numerical model is introduced. The model is based on Particle-In-Cell (PIC) advection, and continuum equations describing a Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Experiments were conducted to test and verify the performance of the numerical model. Tests were done using three types of particles. Measurements of material properties and flow rates were carried out. Video records were also obtained and used to examine flow patterns. The results indicate that the numerical simulations produce deformation patterns and flow rates which are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Due to the high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance, Ti-6A1-4V has been widely applied in aerospace industries. In this study, the welding performance of 3.2-mm and 5.1-mm thick Ti¬6A1-4V sheets was studied using a 4 kW continuous wave Nd: YAG laser. It is found that the use of filler wire, matching the parent metal composition, can bridge the joint gap and produce full penetrated welds up to a width of 0.6 mm without cracking. The laser welds were characterized in terms of the bead geometry, defects, microstructures, and hardness. With increasing joint gap, the percent porosity area increased, reaching just over 1% of the fusion zone area at a gap width of 0.6 mm for the 3.2 mm and 5.1 mm thick sheets. The maximum underfill depth in the Ti-6A1-4V laser welds was about 5% or 7% of the sheet thickness for the 3.2-mm and 5.2-mm thick materials, respectively, meeting the AWS D17-1 specification. The microindentation hardness was maximum in the fusion zone and sharply decreased through the heat affected zone until reaching the base metal value.

In 1966, the Iron Ore Company of Canada commissioned a wet magnetic scavanging plant for the recovery of fine magnetite values p.resent in spiral tailings discharged from a spiral gravity separation process. The plant includes dewatering, grinding, classification, thickening, mini-wedge screening, and primary, secondary and tertiary wet magnetic separation stages. The source of feed varies in quantity and quality, so the original design included variable operational procedures to deal with these conditions.
