This paper discusses mine research at Inco, giving specific examples of research projects which illustrate the approach to mining problems. The first example covers the development of a new mining method, "undercut and fill," which was originated for mining badly broken-up pillars, but which is now rapidly replacing the square set method of pillar recovery. In the new method, ore is extracted in a series of successive horizontal cuts, progressing downward, a cut being completely mined and filled before the cut below is started. In the second example, improvements to the "cut and fill" method of mining are discussed. These improvements are the result of improved techniques and improved equipment, etc., with, in many cases, the former being made possible by the latter. The advances made have permitted the use of the "cut and fill" method at much greater depths than before. The third example is presented to illustrate research undertaken to obtain the earliest maximum advantage of the introduction of a new piece of equipment or material. For this purpose, the development of the "Under-ground use of AN /FO Blasting Agent " has been selected. Work on this project started in May, 1960, at a time when there was very little in-formation regarding the potentialities of AN /FO for underground blasting, either primary or secondary. By the end of 1961, AN /FO made up 64 per cent of the explosives used under-ground at Inco mines.

"AbstractTwo bottom-hole samples have been taken from two new completions in the Turner Valley field, Royalite Lowery No. 8 on the west flank and Royalite No. 73, which was deepened into a lower fault block, on the northeast flank. From the bottom-hole oil of Royalite Lowary No. 8 a synthetic sample was prepared to simulate the original fluid in the reservoir, saturated at the gas-oil contact conditions. The sample from Royalite Lewery No. 8 has been shown to be the original fluid present at this well and represents the oil phase near the oil-water contact in• the reservoir. Complete chemical analysis, P.V.T., and viscosity data have been obtained on these reservoir fluids, which represent the range of saturation from the gas-oil to the oil-water contact in the Turner Valley oil structures. Sampling techniques and the application of the analytical data to reservoir conditions and field operations are discussed. Super-compressibility curves for an average separator tail gas have also been prepared. These data have not been available before. They will be of fundamental value in futu.re reservoir engineering studies of this field and will also serve as a guide in determining operating practices."

The paper describes the processes developed and piloted by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for recovering copper, in the form of specification copper powders, from Lynn Lake sulphidic copper concentrates and Fort Saskatchewan Refinery by-product copper sulphides. The process includes ammonia pressure leaching and hydrogen reduction from solution. Nickel and cobalt present in the con-centrates dissolve in the leach solution and a method was developed for separating these metals from the cop-per. Methods are described for con-trolling the physical properties of the copper powder produced in the reduction vessel. The chemistry of the process is briefly discussed and the effects of some of the more important process variables are described. A new concept of a truly continuous ion exchange system is described and operating details are given,of a 0.6.-m (24 in.) diameter pilot plant treating unclarified acid leach liquor.

Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. "IntroductionTHE LYNN LAKE MINE, situated in Manitoba about 150 miles north of Sherridon, has been actively developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, during the past seven years, resulting in the establishment of a proven reserve of over 14,000,000 tons of ore containing 1.223 per cent nickel, 0.618 per cent copper, and additional cobalt values. For many years, the Sherritt Gordon Company operated a copper-zinc-gold mine at Sherridon but, as this mine was approaching exhaustion and as it was proposed to use the mining and milling equipment to treat the Lynn Lake ore, a number of unusual problems were faced in transferring plant and operations from the one mine to the other, and particularly in preparing to undertake nickel production.Preliminary investigation showed that the ore could be concentrated by flotation to produce a copper concentrate containing 28 to 30 per cent copper with less than 1 per .cent nickel, and a nickel concentrate containing 11 to 14 per cent nickel, 0.3 to 0.4 per cent cobalt, and less than 2 per cent .copper, with high recovery of the three metals in .the concentrates. It was apparent that, initially, the copper concentrate could be economically smelted and refined in the usual manner. But as the nickel concentrate contained an insignificant amount of precious metals (less than 0.02 oz. per ton) and as .it had a much higher nickel content than comparable concentrates normally produced from sulphide ores, the selection of a treatment process and the location of a plant required careful study."

Copper refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because Cu and Ni carry risks for adverse health endpoints through inhalation exposure, it is critical that their aerosol levels, and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air, are understood. Because certain Ni substances have been linked to respiratory cancers, it is also important to characterize the amounts and types of Ni compounds in occupational settings. This paper describes electrorefining and electrowinning operations near Sudbury, Ontario (1930–present), and gives aerosol measurements (1978–present).

Introduction While pilot-mill operations were being carried on at Flin Flon, as described by R. E. Phelan (1), a detailed topographic map was being made of the area in the vicinity of the ore-body for later use in laying out plans for the final plant. The area covered by this survey was 6,600 feet by 6,600 feet, with contours on 2-foot intervals. As mentioned by Mr. Phelan, it was definitely decided at the end of November, 1927, to take up the option on the Flin Flon property and to proceed immediately with the plans for construction of a metallurgical plant at Flin Flon to treat 3,000 tons of ore per day, and of a hydro-electric power plant at Island Falls, Saskatchewan, to supply power for the future operations at Flin Flon. Railway Built From The Pas to Flin Flon Just as soon as the decision was made to go ahead with the construction work and opening-up of the property, it was of course essential to give immediate attention to the building of a railway to the mine. Many years previously, a preliminary survey had been made for a railway to branch off the Hudson Bay railway at a point 4.7 miles northeast of The Pas, and, during certain negotiations in 1925, the Provincial Government of Manitoba had agreed to guarantee the railway bonds necessary to finance the building of the line, so that it was possible to organize for this work immediately. A contract was let by the newly organized Manitoba Northern Railway Company to the Dominion Construction Company, Ltd., and Tomlinson, for the building of the railway to the mine, a distance of approximately 87 miles (see Figure 1). The Manitoba Northern railway is a subsidiary to the Canadian National railway, and all engineering and supervision of the contractors was done by the Canadian National engineers. Actual construction work was started in January, 1928. The first 52 miles of the railway from The Pas to Cranberry Portage is over fairly level, although slightly rolling, country, and a considerable portion of the route is over muskeg area. Rails were laid on top of the frozen muskegs. Gravel deposits were opened-up along the line and, before warm weather; sufficient ballast .was distributed in the muskeg areas to prevent thawing under the track, and thus give the necessary support to allow uninterrupted transportation over the line.

"The province of Quebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. Ten commodities are produced and the annual total shipments have exceeded $600 million in recent years. Quebec is a world renowned producer of chrysotile, titanium slag, graphite, and ilmenite. Quebec is an important North American producer of mica, talc, and peat moss. This paper reviews the main minerals and commodities that have been the object of exploration or development in recent years, namely graphite, wollastonite, dolomite, and silica. Some of the leading projects concerning magnesium minerals and apatite-ilmenite are described. IntroductionQuebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. It goes back to the second half of the 19th century when the first graphite and apatite mines in the Gatineau area and asbestos mines in the Eastern Townships were opened. Since then, more than 25 commodities have been produced in Quebec, making industrial minerals an integral part of the Quebec mineral industry. Today, industrial minerals and building materials count for one third of the total mineral production in Quebec.Present industrial mineral production includes 10 commodities (Table 1). In the last five years, the value of industrial mineral shipments has varied between 500 and 700 millions dollars annually, which represents 20% to 25% of Quebec’s total mineral production. For many years, Quebec has been a major producer of chrysotile and titanium slag, the only producer in eastern North America of mica, graphite and ilmenite, and a leading Canadian producer of talc and peat moss. Quebec also produces, mainly for domestic markets, dolomite, limestone, salt and silica.Quebec’s industrial mineral sector has been quite active in the recent years. Exploration by government geologists and companies has led to the outlining of new deposits, some of which are now in production; others are currently being evaluated. Technical and economic studies are also underway to determine the feasibility of various development projects."

Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Birch-Uchi Lakes area have shown that the volcanic components are arranged in superimposed sequences, or cycles. Each cycle displays a progression from predominantly mafic effusives below to predominantly felsic extrusives above. Sedimentary rocks are preferentially associated with the felsic extrusives. Two volcanic cycles are represented. The average stratigraphic thickness of the volcanic rocks present is 31,000 feet. The original volcanic pile was probably in the order of 40,000 feet thick. The present lithologic composition is estimated to be: mafic volcanic rocks, 60 per cent; felsic volcanic rocks, 27 per cent; sedimentary rocks, 10 per cent; and others, 3 per cent. Gold occurrences are preferentially distributed with respect to the volcanic succession. Of fifty recorded occurrences, thirty-nine are located in the upper felsic division of the lower volcanic cycle; forty are associated with closely interbanded daciterhyolite pyroclastic rocks, andesitic lavas and siliceous sediments. The gold-bearing quartz veins either lie at the contacts of enclosing lithologic units or occupy cross-cutting fractures in one or more adjacent units.

It is not my intention today to make a series of predictions of things to come. Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. Based on this rapidly increasing tempo of achievements you can make your own extrapolations into the future."

Abstract - A method to extract certain types of error variance information from paired data is presented, which constitutes an important tool for the calibration of Gy’s formula for variance predictions in the sampling of broken ores. The research summarized here complements publications by others on geochemical precision. The model and method proposed for treating duplicate data provide a practical means of deriving separate estimates of the purely analytical and aliquot sampling variances, from a unique set of duplicate assays, and, hence, proposes a new avenue for estimating effective mineral grain size.

"Recently, small sized micro-needles for medical are required more frequently by patients. The biggest reason is that it presents great burden on the patients, due to the size of the needle injection. People need to use a very small needle to lower the pain, but the downfall is that it makes them more expensive due to their complicated manufacturing method. Therefore, we need to fabricate a needle by wire-drawing to decrease its price. Tube-drawing is beneficial for its production value; however, in conventional tube-drawing it is difficult of control the wall thickness of the tube and makes it 1mmor lower in diameter. That is why, we propose fluid-mandrel drawing for new tube drawing. This method allows fabrication of a fine tube by using the pressure of the fluid in the tube. In this research, the goal is the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing and its evaluation. Finally, the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing was conducted and in result a tube with a diameter of 0.2mm, high strength and thin wall and fine inner surface was drawn, which can be used as a lesser pain micro-needle.INTRODUCTIONThe main manufacturing method of the current medical needles is roll forming. With this method, it is difficult to make a tube with a diameter lower than 1mm. Deep drawing has been proposed and used as method to further reduce the diameter, but this method is costly and the injection needle obtained by this method is several times more expensive.Therefore, we need to obtain a fine medical needle by drawing process that can be mass-produced and inexpensively manufactured. However, with the conventional drawing process, it is not possible to obtain a syringe needle with a reduced diameter easily, that is why, a fluid-mandrel drawing has been proposed which can reduce the diameter without damaging the inner surface. The methodology of the method is, a fluid is filled in the sealed tube and the pressure inside the tube during drawing is responsible for the good inner surface and wall thickness. It is also expected that the fluid can be easily discarded and that the tube can be manufactured on a long scale."

"Banded iron formation rocks associated with massive sulfide lenses in the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag deposit in the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex, South Africa, were investigated with respect to the geochemistry of manganiferous silicate-rich bands. Two common varieties of these are: amphibole- and garnet-rich iron formation bands. The results reveal that the former are enriched in Fe, Mg, Cu, Co and S. The garnet-rich bands are enriched in Mn, Ca, P, Pb and Ba with significant detrital contamination of Ti, AI, Zr, Cr, Y, V, Ni and Nd.The silicate-rich bands have compositions, in terms of, Si/AI, SilFe, FelMn, LalCe and Co/Zn, comparable to submarine chemical sediments which precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. The garnetand amphibole-rich bands are interpreted as ""evolved"" and ""immature"" hydrothermal sediments, respectively. The latter resulted from rapid precipitation after exhalation, whereas the former had a longer residence within sea water. The silicate-rich bands both exhibit increasing Mn/(Mn+Fe) fractions, which are consistent with a variation expected from proximal to distal depositional settings. The prevalence of garnet-rich bands over amphibole-rich bands is interpreted as the result of injection of hydrothermal fluids from a single vent situated along the northwest margin of the Broken Hill deposit."

The paper describes the evolution and standardization of the NCV methods, the importance of mineralogy in interpreting the results and application of the methods to implementation of the Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide.

The B. M. & S. orebodies, consisting of the No. 6 (Brunswick) and the No. 12 (Anacn Leadridgz, have the distinction of being the first major 1base metal ore deposits to be found in the Province of New Brunswick. They are massive sulphide de-posits consisting of pyrite (pre-dominantly) and base metal sulphides, and they carry values in lead, zinc, copper, and silver. These orebodies are localized within favourable drag fold structures believed to be related in their origin to external forces set up in the area subsequent to the primary regional folding. Both orebodies are characterized by the presence of magnetite 'iron formation' which, in certain 'Portions of each orebody, may be found as relics within the massive sulphides. Studies show the magnetite to be the first metallic mineral within the ore ?zones, followed by pyrite, Sphalerite, galena, and finally chakopyrite. The shape of these massive pyritk orebod:es as well as the distribution of values within them is controlled to a large degree by the ore-ore drag fold structures. A possible relationship is discussed between the basic intrusives in the area ?and the magnetite deposits. It is suggested that a large portion of ?the iron content of the massive suplhedes has been derived from the earlier magnetite. Intermittent movements in the area during the sulphide mineralization are believed to belong to the last stages of deformation in the area. These late movements may have been caused by the intrusion of the granite into the area. The granite may have a genetic relationship to the B. M. & S. orebodies.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

This paper is one of a series pre-pared to study the role of fuels and reductants in metallurgical processes, especially from the viewpoint of Canadian requirements. The object of these studies is to provide a reason-ably authoritative interpretation on the interrelation of fuels in light of the considerable changes that have taken place in the Canadian energy field during the past few years. Previous papers in this group have dealt with the problem generally, and specifically in terms of the development of the iron and steel industry of Western Canada. These latter papers, presented at the Symposium on Iron and Steel in Western Canada held in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 8-9, 1959, surveyed the ferrous processes of interest for use in Wes tern Canada, especially with regard to solid fuel requirements. At that time it was evident that there was a need for a similar study of the fuels aspect of the non-ferrous metals industry.

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. The area covered by the present paper consists of about fifty square miles in the immediate vicinity of the settlement of St. Lawrence, which is on the Southern extremity of the Burin peninsula on the south coast of Newfoundland. Physiography Physiographically, the area is part of the Atlantic upland, equivalent to the New England province of the United States. Evidences of two erosion surfaces are to be seen truncating the intrusives and the folded volcanics and sedimentary rocks. The older erosion surface is represented by small monadnocks from 650 to 750 feet in height with the younger surface covering most of the area and characterized by rounded subdued topography with maximum relief of two to three hundred feet and numerous ponds and bogs. These surfaces have been correlated with the High Valley and the Lawrence peneplains of Newfoundland. On the Avalon peninsula, these peneplains have elevations of, respectively, from 1,300 to 1,700 feet and from 500 to 1,000 feet. Glaciation The entire peninsula has been glaciated, with lee-and-stoss slopes showing on the highest hills in the immediate vicinity, many of which have striae and erratics on their summits. The lee-and-stoss slopes, the glacial striae, and the distribution of certain rocks found in the drift and whose source outcrops are known, indicate a southward direction of ice movement.
