"Geological and technical problems are often considered the most important ones affecting new mining projects. Typical problems and likely causes are reviewed based on current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement (QMCI) perspectives, giving particular attention to the work of W.E. Deming. As the “system approach” is an essential part of these policies, its characteristics are described with particular attention given to cultural- behavioural, organizational and systembased constraints described by J. Gharajedaghi. Given that poor communication and interaction among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators can seriously affect the adequacy of tests, project planning and execution, and mine profitability, these interrelated processes within the mining systems are analyzed and modelled. The impacts on models and simulations of ignoring typical data, information and knowledge uncertainties are addressed. Adapting W.E. Deming’s Fourteen Points, System of Profound Knowledge and insistence on leadership, and the analysis of mining system constraints, will allow the effective QMCI approach required to reduce geological and technical risks. Whenever we achieve this goal, we will be in a better position to overcome environment-, market-, finance- and community-related problems, achieve higher company and industry profitability as well as more sustained development. RÉSUMÉLes problèmes géologiques et techniques sont souvent considérés les plus importants parmi ceux qui affectent les nouveaux projets miniers. Des problèmes typiques et leur causes sont étudiés dans la perspective de gestion de la qualité et d’amélioration continue (GQAC), en relation avec les travaux de W.E. Deming. Comme l’approche système est au centre de ces méthodes, ses caractéristiques sont décrites en donnant une attention particulière aux contraintes de types culturel-comportemental, organisationnel, et systémique décrites par J. Gharajedaghi. Compte-tenu que les lacunes dans les communications et les interactions entre géologues, minéralurgistes, et ingénieurs/opérateurs miniers peuvent affecter sérieusement la validité des essais, de la planification et de l’exécution des projets ainsi que la rentabilité des exploitations, ces processus connexes font l’objet d’analyse et de modélisation. Les impacts sur les modèles et les simulations de l’incertitude des données, informations et connaissances sont soulignés. En adaptant au système minier les Quatorze Obligations et le Système de connaissance approfondie de W.E. Deming ainsi que l’analyse des trois types de contraintes, nous pourrons développer une approche GQAC permettant de réduire les risques géologiques et techniques des projets miniers et des exploitations. Ceci nous pemettra de mieux faire face aux problèmes reliés à l’environnement, aux marchés, au financement et aux conditions sociales, d’améliorer la rentabilité des exploitations minières et de l’industrie, tout en contribuant de façon accrue au développement durable."

Ground instability and subsequent rock falls are a major concern in underground mines. As a result, several mining companies are conducting risk assessments of the ground support installed in their mines. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with a systematic process to assess the strategic risks that could lead to injury to personnel or loss of production, and evaluate possible risk control measures. Risk assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard and estimate the level of risk. This process allows assessment of possible remediation actions to minimize the risk and likelihood of occurrence or mitigation of the consequences to a level that is reasonable and practical. This paper presents two practical mine applications of qualitative risk assessment of ground support to highlight the benefits of this process. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and areas that require support remediation. In addition, it provides a mechanism for proactive response to reduce potential risks associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. It also provides a baseline against which changes in ground condition can be compared and quantified.

The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

"Although manganese is a metal virtually unknown to the layman, it is hardly necessary to point out to the engineer the importance of manganese in modern metallurgy, an importance intimately linked with iron (and steel), the basic materials of engineering construction for hundreds of years and certain to remain so for long into the future. World steel production will approach and perhaps reach 1 billion tons/year in the 1980s; with a manganese content between 0.5% and 1 % in ordinary steels, and more in specialty steels, manganese use worldwide will soon approach 15 million tons annually. Manganese was discovered and isolated in Sweden in 1774 by Karl Wilhelm Scheele (who also discovered molybdenum), but the element was only of scientific interest for several decades. By the early part of the nineteenth century, however, manganese oxide had become commercially available and was in use for colouring glass and for the production of chlorine. Commercial application in metallurgy appears to have been limited to the manufacture of crucible (or ""cast"") steel, a highquality product made by carburizing wrought iron, and melting it in small batches to make ingots which could be rolled and used for special applications, e.g. for the manufacture of fine tools or for ""steeling"" the cutting edges of implements such as wrought iron axes and chisels.* However, it was not until Bessemer's epoch-making invention of cheap steel in 1856, and the dramatic expansion of the steel industry thereafter, that manganese assumed the importance that it holds in modern steelmaking."

"Many underground mines are achieving extended life and optimizing existing facilities by mining at greater depths. The challenges to do this require a sound engineering approach to mine design and mine services, as well as ingenuity in safety design. The social consequence is full utilization of existing infrastructure.Accessing ores at depths of 2000 m to 3000 m requires exceptional hoisting design. May’s theme issue includes a paper that examines a case study of one such hoisting plant, with emphasis on the hoist rope selection at Agnico-Eagle’s Penna shaft. The paper also describes the process whereby consultation with provincial safety authorities resulted in a revised safety factor suited to the hoist. Another paper examines the challenges of ventilating mechanized mines to 3000 m, including air cooling and dilution of diesel exhaust emissions. Vent system designs are discussed, using sound engineering design, and proven technology that minimizes emissions to achieve cost efficiencies. The paper suggests design based on process and ventilation simulators to obtain realistic economic data at the design stage. Increased ground pressures present unique challenges for production and safety. While this is not confined to deep mining, one paper examines rock pressures and seismic events at the Brunswick mine, for which experience may be applied at depth. It describes seismic monitoring as a predictive tool in a real mine situation, and how it is used to improve overall recoveries and maintain worker safety."

"The mechanization of mining operations in underground coal mines has led to faster cutting rates of coalfaces with increased levels of emission of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the workings. Consequently, the fresh air streams from the main ventilation systems reaching distant workings are often insufficient, ineffective or inadequate and have to be supplemented by auxiliary ventilation systems to create and maintain the required working environments underground. The efficiencies of auxiliary ventilation systems are largely affected by drivers of the system such as the type and capacity of the fan; the type, length, diameter and condition of the ventilation ducting and the distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face. Traditionally, single point measurements of methane gas concentrations using either flame safety lamps or hand-held measuring instruments have been used to assess how safe underground coal workings were. Unfortunately, such occasional measurements of methane gas concentrations do not give an accurate picture of the real gas concentration in the working as they are often taken from the easily accessible locations in working. Continuous monitoring of the methane gas concentration in development headings enables a better assessment of the environmental conditions prevailing there. All variations in the methane concentrations are more easily captured on a continuous monitoring basis than by instantaneous single point measurements. The approach adopted in this work was to continuously monitor the concentration of methane very close to the face and about 60 m outbye in development headings, observe the types of auxiliary ventilation equipment and their sizes being used in the working as well as noting the lengths from the discharge ends of the forcing and exhaust ductings to the face.In this paper, empirical methods are used to calculate the mean efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in selected development headings in coal mines in North America. This enables the assessment of the effectiveness of the auxiliary ventilation systems and the identification of the system drivers in them. The results show that the efficiencies of the forcing systems ranged from 17.02% to 96.81% while the efficiencies of the overall systems varied from 6.04% to 54.16%. The distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face appeared to be the strongest driver in the performance of the auxiliary ventilation systems studied. It was also noted that when the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face does not exceed 7 m, there were faster purging rates of methane at the face and the efficiencies of the overall auxiliary ventilation system were greater than 50%. These findings are very important in underground coal mining in North America as they will assist to avert calamities, such as the Westray coal mine disaster in 1992 which resulted from the explosion of methane gas, by identifying which components of the ventilation system need special attention to create safe working conditions underground."

Broad band mine communication today is characterized mainly by individual solutions, which have in common their long development phases and their high cost for development, operation and service. The use of Ethernet and TCP/IP on the other side provides an uniquely price efficient combination of high bandwidth open networking, universal use and accessibility of cheap development tools, especially because it forms the technical infrastructure for the worldwide Internet. TCP/IP and Ethernet assures reliable networking however it is not able to guarantee the latency timing of forwarding network information. Therefor, the network design requires strict load limitation and application level traffic control especially if moving equipment has to be manually remotely controlled via the network. To optimize the use of bandwidth on mining networks using load limited, ?bandwidth wasting? local Ethernet segments, long distance broadband traffic should be carried out using more efficient, deterministic communication backbones providing a guaranteed quality of service for each of the physically separated networks. Open networking and broadband systems however may lead to the anticipation that any demands on bulk data or multimedia traffic can be fulfilled in the future. This definitely will not be the case as the bandwidth demands of applications will be growing as least as fast as the bandwidth provided by communication systems. Looking on those problems from an overall system integration perspective, machines and equipment in the future have to be equipped with intelligent computing devices capable of an intelligent local data preprocessing. Such ?Embedded Machine Information Servers? running commercial computing power in the future will be the intelligent bridge between open networking and a secured, high safety local automation system. These ?Embedded Machine Information Servers? then also can make advantage of intelligent video and audio data preprocessing to store and transmit multimedia information ?on demand? or when the application requires it. Summarizing the potential for the future Ethernet based networking together with powerful communication backbones and intelligent local data preprocessing on the machines in the future will lead the way to integrative, reliable and cost efficient mine automation solutions.

"AbstractThe Cardium formation of northeastern British •Columbia •contains an erosional unconformity that becomes progressively more severe northward until, •at Liard river, the stratigraphic hiatus eliminates the underlying Lower •Cardium sandstone, the Kaskapau formation, and the upper Dunvegan sandstones. The area of unconformity roughly coincides with the distribution of the continental facies of the earlier Dunvegan formation. Along Wapiti river, the zone fossil Scaphites ventricosus Meek and Hayden is found in the Bad-heart member of the overlying Wapiabi shale; Scaphites :preventricosus. Cobban marks the base of the Wapiabi shale; Scaphites cf. corvensis •Cobban is found in the middle shale member of the •Cardium formation. The log of the Red-Willow No. 1 well shows close similarity to the outcrop sections south of Wapiti river. The Cardium formation is mainly late Turonian in age. Two other pre-Cardium Turonian sands of north-eastern British Columbia are named the Wartenbe and Tuskoola sands.IntroductionTHE Upper Cretaceous Cardium (Bighorn) sandstone formation of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia carries within its formational limits an erosional unconformity. The unconformity decreases to the southeast, becoming in immediate shoreline regions, now under the plains, a minor diastem. Such diastems, or stratigraphic intervals of non-deposition, occurring in the shallow unda-zone are paralleled in the deeper portions of the unda-zone by the phenomena of sub-aqueous winnowing. '.This winnowing and re-working •at critical depths creates sand areas with porosity."

This paper describes the significant advantages and improvements in operational availability, reduced breakdowns, and overall cost reductions that can be achieved through the application of a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) program, including Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Equipment Health Monitoring (EHM), in a mine environment. It uses a case study to illustrate the essential elements that constitute the basic requirements to establish such programs. This CBM case study analyzed the Load-Haul- Dump (LHD) vehicle sub-systems and their dominant failure modes, as a precursor to the development of condition indicators. The case study describes a disciplined process to enable condition indicator development and qualification in support of a CBM program. The identified condition indicators vary from readily applicable off-the-shelf monitoring systems and techniques, through to "leading edge" technologies that require further research and development. The paper also explores the developments that have been made in the combination of expert system software associated with modern computer based control systems, and the availability of "intelligent? sensor technology that complement the control system capability.

In this study, Pt nanoparticles have been incorporated into Au colloids, and the linear and non-linear optical properties investigated. Suppression of CO2 and waste such as slags discharged from iron- and steelmaking processes are some of the typical major issues for the protection of global environment and sustainable growth of steelmaking industry. Utilization of active phytoplankton growth will be one of the best options to stabilize and suppress carbon dioxide at high-efficiency. Inorganic minerals such as C, 0, N, Si, P and Fe are necessary for phytoplankton multiplication. It is crucial for supply of nutrition into seawater effectively for phytoplankton multiplication to understand the dissolution behavior of some elements from steelmaking slags into seawater. The morphology of the precipitated phases in steelmaking slags during cooling period was investigated in the present work. The dissolution behavior of some elements from steelmaking slags into artificial seawater has also been studied. The effect of nutrient dissolved into seawater on phytoplankton multiplication, some examples of marine structure made from steelmaking slag, and estimation of CO2 fixation amount by marine phytoplankton are also discussed.

Stabilization of water-bearing sediments by the freezing method for shaft sinking has been used for over 80 years on the European Continent. The real application of this method in Canada started with the development of the potash mines in Saskatchewan during the past fifteen years. The great depth to which it is applied creates a number of problems which have to be seriously considered by engineers in order to produce a safe and economical design. Freezing depth, thickness of the ice wall, number of the freeze holes, capacity of the freezing plant, pre-freezing time, etc., are the most important points which have to be established. Recent field experience in freezing to great depth in the Saskatchewan area is immensely interesting and important for further development of our potash mining and the application of the freezing method.

"Preventative maintenance is a burden for equipment users but a demand from the machine suppliers to ensure performance. Machine availability depends on preventative maintenance being followed.Mining equipment is becoming more and more sophisticated and productive, yet less and less time is available for preventative maintenance. Manufacturers invest in reducing costs, simplifying operating requirements, and lowering maintenance requirements, but it is the users who must invest more heavily in the advanced maintenance systems to keep the units operating.IntroductionPreventative maintenance has been, and still is a key factor in avoiding disturbances in production due to equipment downtime. Manufacturers ask for it in extensive maintenance schedules, check lists, programs, etc. often with a ""threat"" that, if not performed, the machine guarantee will not be valid. Modern mining and construction machinery has become sophisticated, like all other machinery, with elaborate hydraulic, electric and electronic systems and computerized controllers. Maintenance organizations within the mining industry have grown to heavy cost centres just to keep up the availability of the equipment.It is difficult for machine manufacturers to have maintenance programs that suit every user. International suppliers have to deal with different cultures, education levels, environments, organizations, etc. Maintenance programs recommended by manufacturers often do not meet some user's needs while they are ""overkilling"" to others. Preventative maintenance schemes recommendations of what to do, in what frequency, etc.) usually fit mechanical components in the equipment, e.g. wear measurements, crack indications, lubrication, oil changes, etc. But how does one perform preventative maintenance on huge hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems and computers? Failures in these systems usually occur without any warning and are more or less impossible to predict. Another difficulty in creating effective preventative maintenance programs for these kinds of systems is the relatively low volume of mining and construction equipment that is produced per year. For example, although Atlas Copco is one of the largest manufacturers in the world of underground blast hole drilling machines, the company still does not produce more than a few hundred drilling jumbos per year. These are made in more than 10 different models, with different systems and components, and very often are custom adapted to the end user's requirements."

In 1971 the government of British Columbia issued a permit for the Island Copper Mine to commence disposal of 33,000 tons per day of mine tailings into Rupert Inlet, a marine fjord on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. There was considerable controversy surrounding the development, public hearings were held, and as a requirement of the permit the company was obliged to carry out a comprehensive environmental monitoring program. The results of this program provide a thorough assessment of the environmental impact of submarine tailings disposal over the 24-year life of the mine. Following closure in December, 1995, the monitoring program continued for three years to determine the extent of marine ecosystem recovery and re-colonization. It is apparent from the findings of the monitoring program that the mine tailings were dispersed more widely than was originally predicted. It is also clear that widespread heavy metal contamination has not materialized. In retrospect it appears that submarine tailings disposal has resulted in far less severe environmental impacts than if the alternative of land disposal had been adopted. This review highlights significant aspects of public policy decision-making, design of environmental monitoring programs, and questions of interpretation of monitoring program data.

It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "The Red Dog mine has increased mill throughput most years since start-up. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Later in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifying the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, 21 Outokumpu OK50 (50 m3) mechanical flotation cells and four 3.66 mØ column cells were added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (value improvement program) mill optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment, and power generation issues and has a total budget of US$105 M. Start-up of equipment was phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and the project was completed by the end of 2001. IntroductionRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred days of open seas. As of January 2002, the Red Dog main pit had 38.4 Mt of reserves grading 19.2% Zn, 5.3% Pb, and 102 g/t Ag. Additional reserves and resources contribute an additional 72 Mt at 15.6% Zn, 4.2% Pb, and 78 g/t Ag. Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian, black shale-hosted, zinc-lead-silver deposit located in the DeLong Mountains, western Brooks Range, Alaska. All the rocks associated with the mineralizing event are considered to be part of the exhalite rock package. Silicification was a dominant component of the mineralizing event and the host shale has been silicified and locally resembles a chert. The major sulphides in decreasing order of abundance are sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and galena. Most of the deposit’s silver occurs within the crystal structure of the galena. The dominant ore mineral, sphalerite, is very fine grained to amorphous and is commonly intergrown with silica. Ore textures are massive, fragmental, chaotic, veined and rarely show classic sulphide sedimentary layering. The upper portion of the orebody has been physically and chemically weathered. Oxidation has altered the sulphides to sulphates. The zinc and iron sulphates are very soluble and are readily depleted from the weathered cap, while the lead sulphate is residual and is, therefore, enriched."
