"This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for determining the liberation of an ore at various grinding sizes, based on the combined results of microscopic counting, grinding tests, and chemical analysis.The method is illustrated with an application to the magnetite ore of Sherman Mine in Temagomi, Ontario. For this ore, a degree of liberation of 98.7% was determined at a grinding size of 90% passing 44 microns, which closely corresponds to the final grinding size employed at the Sherman Mine Concentrator.Introduction Liberation characteristic of ores have direct and significant bearing on overall economics of concentration processes.Target grades and recoveries can be achieved only it minerals are adequately liberated prior to separation. Degree of liberation depends on the extent of size reduction. However, due to the high costs associated with size reduction processes, it is important to keep size reductions within limits of satisfactory liberation. Prevention of excessive size reduction is also necessary because of inefficient mineral separations in very fine sizes. Hence, a study of reduction size — liberation relationship is essential for optimum profit from milling operations.A number of procedures have been developed for liberation studies (1-12), but there is lack of method for universal adoption.A new approach is presented in this paper that might provide a realistic estimate of liberation and give a practical guidance as to the degree of size reduction required for satisfactory liberation."

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. NOTATIONS-EQUATIONSFor the purpose of the paper, a particle will be characterized by its volume Vp, and its volumetric composition with respect to a mineral of interest, which will be given the notation ""O"". "INTRODUCTIONTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these factors, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gained at the Black Angel Mine on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during this small ''shipping window."" The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months production was gained by opting for the ""Barge"" approach.What the Arctic winters do to the shipping season, so do they affect the productivity and the cost of labour. Construction labour must come from southern Canada. Thus higher transportation costs and higher wage rates, with more overtime and incentives, increase the labour costs to approximately 50% over normal southern rates. Couple these rates with the lower productivity involved with men working in the extreme cold temperatures and the net effort is worth avoiding. A process plant being constructed in Southern Canada can take advantage of more accessible labour at lower costs, increased productivity and a faster construction schedule. The barge concept must still deliver the equipment and materials during the ""shipping window"" but it can in the completed form."

"This paper deals with the results of the variation of thermal conductivity of rocks with pressure on a laboratory scale. For this purpose, the authors have added a pressure-supplying unit to the apparatus developed by Mousset-Jones and McPherson (1986), Önder (1995), Ashworth and Ashworth (1979), and Innaurato and Occella (1989) in order to measure the thermal conductivity under pressure. The values obtained from the tests performed by this new apparatus have been stated using a regression analysis and the related graphs have been drawn. Results have shown that the thermal conductivity of rock varies digressively with pressure. The same results have been obtained in different rocks types. IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining engineers is that of establishing, maintaining and sustaining safe and healthy working conditions in underground mines.Heat can have a profound effect on safe and healthy working conditions and is one of the main problems in deep underground mines. In this regard, the temperature of the air passing through the mine openings increases steadily and causes a decrease in the efficiency of workers due to the unwanted physical effects to human bodies in the working area. At the same time, the hot and humid environment resulting from heat and temperature rise causes some important occupational diseases and increases the accident risks in the related openings."

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. La corrosivité des environnements miniers souterrains est un phénomène peu étudié au Canada. En plus de détériorer les systèmes de soutènement, la corrosion s?attaque aussi à divers installations et équipements souterrains. Cette étude, débutée en janvier 2007, est l?établissement d?une banque de données afin de caractériser les environnements miniers souterrains selon leur potentiel de corrosivité pour les systèmes de support de terrains. Pour ce faire, cinq (5) mines ont été sélectionnées afin de comparer les environnements : Laronde, Géant-Dormant, Niobec, Mouska et Doyon. À chacune des mines, trois (3) endroits ont été étudiés. Les résultats préliminaires démontrent une grande variabilité des conditions d?une mine à l?autre ainsi qu?à l?intérieur même d?une mine. La minéralogie des roches et du gisement influence la composition des eaux souterraines et la présence des sulfures joue un rôle important sur l?agressivité de l?eau et de l?air des mines de l?étude. Afin de déterminer le potentiel de corrosivité, plusieurs paramètres doivent être considérés et la mine doit être zonée selon l?agressivité des endroits.

"The Similkameen Mining Company property is situated about 9 1/2 miles south and west of Princeton B.C. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, mining is presently taking place in the Ingerbelle pit. At 15,000 tpd of 0.50% Cu ore the Ingerbelle pit is sufficient for about 8 years. Another 8 years ore supply is available from the old Granby workings of the Copper Mountain property which operated from 1927 to 1957.The pit operations commenced in late 1970 with the concentrator starting in March 1972. Designed and built by Bechtel Corporation under the supervision of Newmont the concentrator's design was based on single-stage crushing and single-stage modified autogenous grinding. The modification was installation of a crusher to crush the critical size build-up. The description of the operation follows.CRUSHERThe primary crusher is an open pocket Allis-Chalmers. 54"" x 74"" gyratory. The basic closed side setting is 8"". The crusher is fed from one side with 100 ton Electra-haul trucks. The crusher pocket discharges to a 96"" wide conveyor belt, then to a 48"" conveyor system including a stacker belt. The crushed product is piled on a stockpile with a capacity of about 30,000 live tons. This stockpile feeds the concentrator."

"In April, 2014, Hecla's Greens Creek mill, near Juneau, Alaska, switched from sulphuric acid to the use of dissolved carbon dioxide for lead flotation circuit pH control. The Greens Creek mine uses paste backfill, in which mill tailings are mixed with cement and used to fill mined areas. Some backfill inevitably becomes part of mill feed during subsequent mining cycles, resulting in high feed pH levels and increased dissolved calcium in the lead flotation circuit. Sulphuric acid is traditionally used to lower pH in such cases but it produces undesirable side effects, including poorer lead-zinc separation and unstable froth. The amount of sulphuric acid used at Greens Creek was limited due to these effects, resulting in higher than target pHs when feed backfill content was high. Dissolved carbon dioxide can be added without these limitations so pH levels have been under much better control since the switch. Additionally, lead-zinc separation and froth characteristics have significantly improved.IntroductionThe Greens Creek Mine, owned by Hecla Greens Creek Mining is an underground mine located on Admiralty Island near Juneau, Alaska, producing silver, gold, lead and zinc in the form of lead and zinc flotation concentrates and a gravity gold concentrate (McDonald, Morgen & Hancock, 2012). The lead and zinc concentrates are produced in conventional flotation circuits preceded by a graphite removal flotation step.The underground mine utilizes cemented paste backfill, of which a certain amount is inevitably re-mined in later mining cycles and returned to the mill, mixed with fresh ore. The Portland cement used in the paste backfill is highly basic so that, from the point of view of the mill, the net effect is to introduce a good deal of lime to run-of-mine mill feed, producing a very high natural pH. This high pH needs to be lowered to obtain good metallurgical results."

Two comprehensive surveys, which focus upon backfill practices and the economics of backfilling in underground mines in Canada, have been conducted. The two surveys were designed to assess operational practices and costs associated with the wide scope of filling operations that must be met by individual mines, ranging from raw material feed to the preparation plant, through underground backfill transportation, to in-stope product placement. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database of information upon which they might compare their own practices and costs with present trends throughout the industry.

"The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

It must be akin to rubbing salt in the wound, then, when an entrepreneur sells shares and the Court upholds Revenue Ca nada taxing the gain as ordinary income instead of capital gain. But, this is precisely what happened in the case of The Estate of Murray Watts, et al. v. The Queen.The issue that had to be decided by the Federal Court, Tri al Division, in this case was whether or not the profit from the sale of shares in Hearne Coppermine Exploration s Limited in 1968 was a capital gain, or income subject to tax.Hearne was incorporated in July, 1967. At that time, the three plaintiff s, together with seven other individuals, subscribed for 400,000 shares at 10 a share. The plaintiff subsequently subscribed for an additional 500,000 shares at $1.A pooling agreement was entered into by all ten shareholders regulating the disposition of any o f their shares; any sale required approval of seven of the ten initial sub scribers. It also provided for the sale of their shares 30 days after any public offering."

"A laboratory study was carried out to determine the potential role and effect of ultrasonic irradiation in the flotation of a Sudbury copper-nickel sulphide ore. The use of ultrasound was tested separately at the pulp preconditioning, collector conditioning and flotation stages. While no significant benefits were evident in the latter two cases, ultrasonic preconditioning of pulp improved the grade-recovery performance and had the prospect of reducing reagent consumption rates. Tests were conducted on both the normal and oxidized ore samples, and several variables were investigated, including ultrasound frequency (25 kHz and 45 kHz), ultrasonic power (up to 1.6 W/cm2), duration of ultrasonic treatment (up to 60 minutes), and the intensity of pulp agitation employed during the application of ultrasound. Ultrasound frequency of 25 kHz and duration of 15 minutes yielded satisfactory results. Changes were found to occur in the temperature, pH and Eh of the pulp during ultrasonic processing. The favorable effects of ultrasound observed in this study were attributed primarily to its surface cleaning capability.INTRODUCTIONThe use of ultrasound for the surface cleaning of objects is well known. Ore flotation is based essentially on the surface properties of minerals, and hence stands to benefit from ultrasonic treatment which may help restore mineral surface characteristics that might have been lost or modified through oxidation, etc. Expected outcomes of this method of treatment include improved flotation kinetics, higher recovery, better selectivity, and savings in reagent consumption, as has been demonstrated by various researchers (Aldrich and Feng 1999, Celik 1989, Ozkan 2002, Letmathe et al. 2002, Nicol et al. 1986)."

"Due to certain advantages in (semi-)Autogenous-Ball mill circuits in most of the high-throughput ore grinding units of mineral processing plants, much attention is paid to optimize the mill performance. Despite the maturity of the grinding mill mechanical design, there had been made less attention to the efficiency of the grinding media in the past. In this research, the possibility of establishing a relationship between liner/lifter wear rate and variations in the composition of the iron ore (from Chadormalu mine) is investigated.Measurements and determination of liner/lifter wear rates and patterns concluded in recognition of critical liner segments exposed to much abrasion during the ore grinding. After metallurgical analysis of liner materials and correlation of wear rate with the ore composition, the homogeneity in the metallurgical microstructure of the alloyed steel (such as the uniform distribution and amounts of the constituent phases) was determined as the most influential factor in the response of the liner/lifter to the variations in the ore composition. Magnetite with greater abrasion index than hematite, in finer particles, is responsible for additional abrasion of liners; hematite with greater work index exists in the mill with larger particle sizes, thus it could produce wear on liner parts with less tolerance to impact as is the situation for martensitic steels.INTRODUCTIONThe mineralization in Chadormalu plutonic iron ore deposit is consisted of mostly magnetite, hematite, martite, apatite, quartz and carbonates. The average composition of the ore is presented in Table 1. In the processing circuit, the gyratory crushed ore reduced to 30 cm would finally be the feed to three similar 32’ semi-autogenous mills in parallel processing lines. The pulp in the mill would have the characteristics mentioned in Table 2. The quality of the mill output has its direct effect on the downstream processes either physically or chemically (e.g. in cycloning or flotation respectively). In order to take advantage of optimum performance for these circuits, a close control of the ore grinding conditions is necessary; because any shortages in throughput, liner/lifter damage or changes in ore composition could bring the unexpected casualties. In this work, it has been attempted to find (possibly) a reasonable relationship between variations in ore characteristics together with liner quality and the amount of wear rate in different liner/lifter segments of a semi-autigenous mill. Liner/lifter segments are supplied by three different domestic steel making companies. The alloy structure of the liners/lifters is made up of pearlitic chromoly steel."

"An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an Intensive Leach Reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in Dec 2007.There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every 10% of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1% to 1% additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall 4% gain in plant recovery.With total gold recovery of 12% in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600g/t in the concentrator feed to the in-line reactor. The recovery of gold in the in-line reactor is in excess of 98.5%.This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory testwork prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefits of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulphides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONBesides picking nuggets off the ground or out of riverbeds, gravity concentration is arguably one of the oldest methods of recovering gold. In circa 6000BC people discovered that gold can be found behind the rocks and in depressions of creek beds. By placing rocks in a stretch of channel with the proper slope the first sluice is built, probably around 4,000 BC, and this method is still practiced today."

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

The ACACIA Reactor - Introduction What is it? The Acacia Reactor is a fluidized bed high intensity cyanide leaching system. Purpose for its existence? The Acacia Reactor was developed to treat high grade gold concentrates generated from primary gravity concentration systems. Why intensively cyanide leach a gravity concentrate? Current secondary upgrading processes, such as tabling, create significant losses of fine gold that is initially recovered in the primary gravity concentration units. Additional benefits include improved security and a reduction in health hazards associated with calcining.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. Mines must manage variability from within their operations as well as those imposed upon them by external forces.
