The Ida Valley in Central Otago is one of series of parallel basins filled with freshwater sediments. The basins are in fact tectonic depressions superimposed on NE trending grabenlike structures which occur in the area and are the result of block faulting possibly initiated in Cretaceous times and concluded in late Tertiary and early Quaternary. In Central Otago this tectonic event affected metamorphosed rocks belonging to the eastern facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline and collectively known as the Haast Schist Group. These rocks constitute the basement and the shoulders of the tectonic depressions. The Ida Valley occupies the depression wedged in between the Raggedy Range to the NW and the North Rough Ridge in the SE. The valley is approximately 38 km long, 3 to 7.5 km wide and is drained by the NE flowing Pool Burn, which meets the SW flowing Ida Burn. The resulting unified stream flows into the Manuherikia river which drains the next door depression to the NW. The present work deals with the Ida Valley basin and more specifically with the geology studied within two Prospecting Licence areas held by Gold Mines of NZ Ltd on the southeastern flank of the valley.

Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. Light metals have great potential for application in the automotive and aerospace industries because of their excellent physical properties. The usage of aluminium, titanium and magnesium is limited by relatively high costs of production, associated energy costs and large ecological footprint. In the case of aluminium, significant improvement to the Hall-HTroult process is still achievable through advances in cell design, materials and process control. Alternative production processes, including carbothermic reduction and low temperature routes are also possible. Magnesium and titanium production are currently dominated by batch metallothermic processes and new process routes are required to develop these industries. Research at CSIRO, through the Light Metals Flagship, is currently focused on step change improvements in the production of light metals, aimed at lowering energy usage, increasing productivity and reducing the overall environmental impact. In this paper, the overall status of the existing technologies will be described, highlighting areas that are being developed around the world and at CSIRO.

Recent advances in technology have allowed many of the problems of directional control of long diamond drill holes to be overcome. Three case histories are presented, from Cobar, Hilton North and Mount Isa Mine, in which careful hole design and the use of wedges and down-the-hole motors have allowed tight directional control of drilling. Substantial savings in time and cost were achieved in all three cases.

A number of theoretical papers have been published outlining the use of electronic detonators to limit peak particle vibrations levels, but few empirical studies have been undertaken and even fewer examples have been published of the use of such technology in the aggregates industry. This paper gives a summary of the research work carried out at two limestone quarries in the North of England, where a series of blasts were used to compare and contrast the use of electronic and non-electric detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out using the same burden, spacing and decked charge weight loadings. A methodology was established that could be used to reduce the peak particle velocities (PPVs) at two or more specific locations by using single-hole blast vibration signatures in conjunction with specific electronic detonator timing intervals. The initial study concluded that this was only possible if single-hole signature blasts were periodically recorded to establish the shape of the correct vibration envelopes as properties were approached. These wave envelopes could then be used as the basis for choosing the specific electronic detonator timing intervals to give the lowest PPV for the properties or locations concerned. This methodology was then used in the second study to access a large volume of aggregates adjacent to a working railway tunnel. The financial benefit for the company was to convert these additional tonnages of rock from being a resource to an exploitable reserve. The project involved careful blast design and the instrumentation of a number of boreholes to enable the results of blast monitoring exercises to be compared with predicted PPV results. The iterative process involved the vibration results being uploaded into æBlast LogÆ (an expert blasting database system developed by the Blasting and Environmental Research Group at the University of Leeds) and analysed to produce predictions ready for the next blast.

A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

A resource estimate uses data obtained by sampling an orebody. An example is described in which a random drilling pattern did not provide a representative set of assays, and the estimated resource was significantly less than the mine production. Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

Hydrocyclones are the most widely used device for classification in a grinding circuit. However, even the most efficient hydrocyclone has a bypass of fines from the feed to the underflow which reduces comminution circuit performance, as well as misclassification around the cut point. Fine screens classify only according to the particle size, allowing for a reduction in the recirculation of fines back to the mill. The development of high capacity multi-screens makes fine classification in a grinding circuit a viable option. Minera Saucito recently substituted hydrocyclones with screens in its grinding circuit. The change of classifier resulted in an increase in throughput and lead recovery but a decrease in silver recovery. This case study presents the changes in comminution and flotation performance that occurred after the installation of screens and uses historical operational data collected over 12 months of operation to investigate the reasons for these observed changes. Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

Geology is generally treated as a æfront endÆ step in mine development. After infill drilling, the majority of resource estimation, mine-planning, development, mineral processing strategies and operational procedures are planned and implemented with little geological input, particularly in open pit operations. However, significant benefits in overall costs, cash flow, and technical risk reduction can be realised when sound geology is utilised more rigorously throughout the mining process. This under-utilisation of geology in the mining process has arisen due to a combination of factors:A lack of interest in, or knowledge of the full mining process by geologists. Few geologists fully understand where their inputs make critical impacts on downstream users. As a result of this, geologists generally do not focus their inputs towards areas of greatest value added, ie addressing issues critical for other members of the mining team. Most importantly, few geologists effectively communicate their results to the downstream users of their geology models. The results are that the potential benefits of geology, and the appropriate status of geology in the mining industry, are not fully realised. It is fundamental to realise exactly what geologists do. Geologists constrain geological processes and geometry. All geoscientific tools at the geologistsÆ disposal are geared towards one of these goals. An emphasis on geological processes is present throughout the exploration process, whereas in the resource estimation and mine development process an emphasis on geometry is required. The mining process is a web of disciplines that are attempting to optimise development of a resource to provide value to shareholders. Yet few people within these disciplines have a full appreciation of this web, and where sound geology inputs can add value through various feedback loops. Geology inputs do not end at the resource estimation stage, nor are they relegated to grade control implementation. If geologists have an appreciation of the mining process and close liaison with the other disciplines such as geostatistics, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, and mining engineering, they can significantly benefit project costs, timelines, and constrain technical risk by addressing their issues at the earliest possible stage. Furthermore, the mining process is not a single pass timeline, but an iterative process where the exploration, resource definition, mine planning and mining loop is continually repeated over the life of a project. Therefore, the potential inputs of geology are critical throughout the mining process. Effective communication of the impacts of geology inputs on downstream users is often lacking on mining projects. The most effective way to communicate geological results is through where it impacts most û project risk. Focussing all geology inputs and communication in terms of potential material risk allows the geologist to be more effective in contributing value to the mining process, and allows the downstream users of geology inputs to better constrain the risks associated with their aspects of the mining project. Through a program of geologists:taking an interest in the entire mining process and identifying critical areas for geology inputs to downstream users (the geologistsÆ clients); focussing geology inputs to address the potentially material issues on mining projects; and communicating their inputs to the æclientsÆ in terms of technical risk, geology will be much better integrated into the mining process. As a result, the potential benefits of geology throughout the mining process will be realised, and the status of geologists within the mining process will be elevated to a more pivotal position.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

Multi Torque Industries and Jadefoil have developed a safer, more efficient method of explosive protection, retention, placement, and constraint. In particular, this refers to advancements in airbag technology, where the system will offer an alternative to conventional gasbags and decking methods to provide a far more controlled and safer working environment. Airbags have provided operator control and reliability which has not until now been possible in this type of application. The benefits have been noted by current users and the advantages have provided an increase in productivity and significant savings in explosive waste. Obvious problems with gasbags lie in their instability in hot conditions where the danger is associated with gas canisters exploding with great force posing a significant risk to operators. Other problems associated with the decking systems currently on offer is the lack of versatility and operator control. The airbag systems give the operator full control to guarantee accurate placement, assured retention whilst boasting a quick operation of less than a few seconds for conventional void blocking, decking and plugging. One of the main advantages of the airbags is that the operator has full control over placement and retention force, therefore in wetter conditions where slippage can be a problem extra air can be added at the operatorÆs discretion to ensure a sufficient grip. Technical calculations coupled with experimental testing have demonstrated that an airbag will support the weight of a 30 m water column in an 89 mm hole at an initial bag pressure of 5 psig. Applications are increasingly growing whilst more customers embrace their use. Advancements such as the ability to deck in overhead holes, block voids in overhead holes at any depth, explosive retention in very wet conditions, longhole stabilisers to prevent hole closure and concertinaed liners reflect a dynamic potential for new technologies. All of these applications provide a decrease in explosive waste, an increase in operator safety, an increase in explosive protection, and an increase in productivity.

A new rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed by CSIRO was evaluated by PIRSA and GA on a wide variety of mineralised properties in South Australia, including the Emmie Bluff, iron oxide copper-gold-style prospect on the Stuart Shelf. During a three-month campaign in South Australia in 2003 the system logged over 50 000 metres of core from the State Core Library, company prospects and mines. The new system uses automated core tray handling, continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy, and digital imaging, to characterise and identify dominant mineral species on core, chips and pulps, at spatial resolutions of ~1 cm (spectral data) and ~0.1 mm (image data). The system can log up to 1000 m of core per day and several thousand metres of drill chips. Mineralogy is pre-interpreted using specialised identification software trained on a selected suite of minerals showing characteristic absorption features within the measured spectral range. On core from the Emmie Bluff iron oxide copper-gold prospect, 470 km NW of Adelaide and 80 km SSE of the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit, the spectral mapping system was able to characterise a number of alteration zones enveloping the sub-economic Cu-Au mineralisation. These consist of distal white mica phases showing decreasing Al content towards mineralisation, a zone of increased iron oxide content in the hangingwall to mineralisation, and a zone proximal and coincident to Cu-Au mineralisation that is enriched in chlorite with variable Mg/Fe chemistry. Additionally the results show background spectral characteristics that mimic the magnetite distribution.

The goal of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. De- partment of the Interior, diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and mini- mize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel-powered equipment in under- ground mines. Significant results of research conducted during the last 5 years are briefly described, with references to published reports on specific topics. Topics covered here include brief discussions of a newly completed diesel research laboratory, the effects of a fuel addi- tive on diesel exhaust particulate matter, the effect of diesel engine maintenance on emis- sions, a diesel particulate filter for equipment used in underground metal and nonmetal, and coal mines, and lastly, the prototype hydrogen- powered mine vehicle. These research accomplishments could favor- ably affect the mining industry by reducing the health and safety hazards associated with the use of diesel-powered equipment in underground Mines.

Primary production blasting at Hamers- ley Iron began with seven inch holes at Tom Price in 1966 and has developed since then to large multiple row shots of 381 mm holes at Tom Price and 311 mm at Paraburdoo. Up to 1.3 million tonnes are initiated in a single blast with the average around 300,000 tonnes. Development can be traced through Anfo, AlAnfo, slurries, various boosters, initiation and delay techniques, hole loading and daily operating practices. A standard practice could be developed for the two mines for normal pro- duction blasts; this would not apply to such common variations as low "paddy" shots, pre- splitting, tight corners necessitating single row drilling etc. Because of ground variation three or even four sizes of drill holes may well be economic- al for blasting, even though this would be off set by complications in operation, supervision, store stocking and maintenance, particularly in Drilling.

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (-4 Ma) on Ponza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (-500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.
