Gretley Colliery is situated at Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales and is owned and operated by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Ccnpany, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peko Wallsend Limited. The mine has been an efficient bord and pillar producer by industry standards. However, its continued economic viability was threatened because the bulk of remaining reserves lie in more difficult mining conditions and are of poorer quality. Alternatives were examined to improve productivity and allow Gretley to become more competitive in the current difficult market Environment.

This address is set deliberately in the broadest possible terms. A review of the place of mining in Australian life today will serve to point up the changes that we can see in the life of people in the industry. Some of the influences on the future welfare of mining people bear also on the progress of this Institute, now approaching its 90th year. As mining becomes more and more dependent on higher technology and therefore, on the higher skills of the people in the industry, the role of The Institute, I suggest, becomes more and more significant.With investment per employee in mining generally continuing to rise, our ability to handle problems of manpower and human relations becomes a matter of greater importance.Questions that flow from these general thoughts form the substance of what I have to say.

With the long lead time requirement for engineering and construction of mineral pro- cessing facilities and the costly financing arrangements necessary, effective project management is essential to the successful and timely start up of these major production units. An added complexity is the frequently remote location of such projects and the demands this imposes on efficient project staffing, scheduling, logistics and cost control. Parsons recent experience with major projects such as Greenvale in Queensland and La Caridad in the desert of Northern Mexico and at remote locations like Sar Cheshmeh in Iran are described. The applications being developed for improving project controls through the use of computer techniques such as MSCS-COPES, and readily accessible and versatile transportation means are reviewed.

The influence of pulp density, ferric ion concentration and particle size on the tank bioleaching of two kinds of refractory gold concentrates are discussed. The chemistry and mechanism of the bioleaching process are also presented. The relationship between oxidation of sulphides, liberation of enclosed gold and gold cyanidation are discussed. The consumption of NaCN could be reduced by alkaline treatment of bioleached residues prior to Cyanidation.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

The use of Non-Linear Programming to obtain improved schedules of future activity in two specific cases of mining and treatment of minerals is described. The two cases were (i) reclamation of gold, uranium and sulphur from old surface tailings dams and, (ii) underground mining of gold. The method used an augmented Lagrangian device to reduce a constrained Non-Linear Programme to a sequence of unconstrained hill- climbing procedures. The main advantages of the method appear to be those of (a)flexibility of modelling of industrial characteristics and constraints and, (b) reasonably modest computation times.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials. This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products. This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia. These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50% of new generating plant might be nuclear. Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme. - The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel'; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

Australia had an active uranium mining industry in the 1950s with uranium oxide being supplied under contract to the atomic energy authorities of the U.K. and U.S.A. In the 1960s, when these con- tracts concluded, domestic production ceased, apart from Rum Jungle, whose production until 1971 was stockpiled. By the 1970s, the demand for uranium from the electrical utility industry had risen sharply and the effects on Australia were notable. The Mary Kath- leen mine re-opened in 1976 but, more significantly, exploration activity suddenly expanded with the re- sult that several world-standard deposits were locat- ed. Western world requirements for uranium based on increasing energy consumption and a changing energy mix, will warrant the development of Aust- ralia's resources. By 1985 our mines could be pro- ducing 9,500 tonnes of uranium oxide yearly and by 1995 the export value from uranium could reach that from wool. In terms of benefit to the community the economic rewards are considerable but, in terms of providing energy to the world, Australia's uranium is vital.

The average first degree graduation numbers in geoscience, mining engineering, metallurgy/materials and chemical engineering are shown and compared with the postgraduate numbers. Demographic trends in population are reviewed and the implications for the required numbers of trained specialists indicated. Short/medium and long-term possible solutions to potential shortages of trained personnel are canvassed.

Exposed, open pit mine highwalls contribute significantly to the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) thus causing environmental concerns upon closure of an operating mine. Four innovative technologies were evaluated under the US Environmental Protection AgencyÆs, Mine Waste Technology (MWTP), Prevention of AMD Generation from Open Pit Highwalls Demonstration Project. This project is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement. The objective of the field demonstration was to evaluate the technologies ability to decrease or eliminate acid generation from treated areas of the highwall in comparison an untreated highwall area. The field demonstration was performed at the Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) a subsidiary of Placer Dome US, located near Whitehall, Montana. GSM is an operating gold mine. The highwall at GSM was divided into five plots measuring 15.24 by 15.24 m and each technology was assigned a plot with the fifth plot being used for comparison as a background control plot. The four technologies were spray-applied. The applied in situ treatment technologies included: a modified, furfuryl alcohol resin sealant, utilising wood and agricultural by-products to coat the rock surface; EcobondTM ARD, a phosphate based process that forms a stable, insoluble compound, coating the rock surface; and two AMD passivation technologies, magnesium oxide and the Dupont technology developed to create an inert layer/coating on the pyrite, preventing oxidation. The technologies were evaluated using the following methods: ASTM D 5744-96, accelerated weathering of solid materials using a modified humidity cells; mine wall residual wall rinse sampling; microscopy; and core drilling followed by water injection testing. The following paper describes the technologies used for passivation of acid generation from the highwall, the field demonstration, and the testing results from the background and each technology plot.

Dilution in underground coal operations can be underestimated by up to five times during feasibility studies, with disastrous economic consequences. Every one per cent of stone waste introduced can reduce an in situ specific energy of 25 MJ/kg by some 0.25 MJ/kg and increases the abrasiveness of the run-of-mine coal. Where a wash plant is not in place, penalties imposed for not meeting contractual specifications alone can amount to some $A 1 million per year. This paper presents a method for monitoring, reporting and ultimately controlling dilution in an underground coal mining operation and presents the dilution trends from a continuous miner/longwall mine over an eight year period. The overall dilution level for the mine can be back-calculated by comparing the run-of-mine coal quality to the predicted in situ, undiluted quality. However, this will not identify the actual contaminant types, areas of the mine responsible for the dilution and the reasons for the dilution. This additional information is essential for controlling dilution to acceptable levels. Quality and horizon control using existing sampling information is generally only adequate for longer-term control purposes, and is not suitable for monitoring mining-induced dilution. The cost of close-spaced surface drilling to collect the information necessary for short-term control is prohibitive, particularly for deeper mines. However, much of this data can be collected through underground channel sampling and horizon control measurements taken during continuous miner development and longwall extraction. The mine runs the risk of not meeting contractual quality specifications and of increased equipment wear if this additional information is not available and the sources of dilution cannot be controlled. The information can also be used to plan longwall extraction heights on a short-term scale with resulting improvements in productivity.

Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth's resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. This paper describes modelling studies of the flotation cells used by BHP Billiton Nickel West Ltd in the slimes circuit at Mt Keith. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the hydrodynamic limitations in the existing cells to improve nickel recovery. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed on the 100 m3 mechanically-stirred cells. The data produced by the simulations include velocity vectors, gas holdup distribution, solids distribution, bubble size, superficial gas velocity and turbulent parameters. These results have been checked and found to match hydrodynamic measurements at the plant. An analysis of the data found that one of the limitations in fine particle recovery was related to the air bubbles discharged with the tailing. The air in the discharge was caused by the high viscosity of the pulp. In the presence of fine particles, the pulp exhibits high viscosity with a yield stress. The increased drag due to high viscosity caused the bubbles to rise more slowly up the cell. This results in a significant hold-up of bubbles, some of which report to the tailing with associated loss of valuable minerals. A parametric CFD study of the operating variables shows that less air would be discharged in the tailing by decreasing the following: air flow rate,pulp density,stirring speed, andfrother addition. Simulation results indicate that these changes would cause a lowering of the air hold up in the cell especially near the discharge area. Predictions of the bubble-particle attachment rates under various operating conditions have also been calculated. Although it is possible to increase attachment rates by increasing stirring speed or by increasing pulp density, the amount of air discharged and the amount of nickel loss through the tailing will also increase. The project showed that CFD modelling is a powerful tool for studying hydrodynamic effects of bubble-particle interactions in flotation cells.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Aluminium in Australia, and in fact all round the world, is made virtually exclusively by the Hall-Heroult process, whereby the metal is derived from the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in an electrolyte comprising fluoride salts. It is the distribution and control of these inorganic fluorides during and after the reduction process which go to make up the bulk of environmental problems associated with aluminium reduction smelters. The emission characteristics of fluorides from the process, the occurrence and effects of fluorides in the environment, and the control techniques wnich are applied in industry, all need to be taken into account in assessing the overall environmental aspects of aluminium Production.

Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

Cannington is a Broken Hill type deposit discovered by BHP Minerals, now BHP Billiton, in 1990. The deposit is located south east of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit occurs in the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier within the Soldiers Cap Group. The mineralisation is interpreted to be confined to two limbs of a synform wrapped around a core amphibolite. The silver, lead and zinc mineralisation is zoned within silicic and mafic units. There is a strong association between silver and lead. The combination of mafic and silicic zoning, differing relative grades of silver, lead, zinc and iron, the relative position of the mineralisation on the synform limbs and differing metallurgical performances have resulted in the identification of ten different ore types, four of which are currently extracted. Ordinary Kriging (OK) is used as the resource estimation methodology for the silver, lead and zinc mineralisation. This modelling approach has performed quite well for resource reporting and long term mine planning. However the limitations of this modelling technique to adequately provide information on a local stope scale has lead to the geological staff to consider alternatives to this approach. Limitations of the current modelling method apply to both the geometry of the orebodies and the grade variability. Since early-2000 the Cannington geologists have been experimenting with modelling both the distribution of the mineralisation types using Probability Field conditional simulation (PF) and the distribution of grade using Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS). This approach to local modelling of mineralisation type and metal grades using conditional simulation (CS) has undergone a full evaluation by comparing grades estimated for stopes using both the (OK) resource model and conditional simulation (CS) models. The mine planning staff have used the CS derived models, and have found improvements in grade predictions over the currently utilised Ordinary Kriging û derived resource model.
