Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space. The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.

The current drill-and-blast method of tunnelling is cyclic and, for this reason above all others, has a future application potential which is lower than that of continuous methods. There is scope for progress in several facets of today's drill-and-blast tunnelling. But even if each of its unit operations and the synthesis of these were to be optimised, this conventional method will, in the long term, fail to be a serious competitor for tunnelboring machines (TBMs), roadheaders and the like. If its role in tunnelling is not to decline at an increasing rate, drill-and-blast will need to be transformed into a continuous system. Boring and cutting machines consume considerable energy (and expenditure) in creating rock fragments which are smaller than those required by muck-handling equipment. In this respect, blasting is more efficient. Mechanical methods are also less versatile and flexible and, when planning proceeds on a basis of meagre or inadequate geological data, cannot be costed as accurately. Currently, research gains for TBMs and roadheaders are greater than those for conventional tunnelling. If (as is likely) the disadvantages of mechanical methods continue to be reduced at a greater rate, the swing away from drilling and blasting will gain momentum.

A key aspect of seismic management for narrow vein stoping of the west zone at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been the development of a fully remote extraction method that does not require personnel access to sill drives within the orebody once stoping commences. Initially, sill driving within the reef is undertaken in a conventional fashion under geological control. Sill drives are developed at a vertical backs-to-floor height ranging from 7 - 12 m. This mining stage includes all activities prior to the commencement of stoping, after which no personnel enter the unstoped section of the sill drive at any time for any purpose. The key aspect of the remote mining cycle is the use of footwall drill drives paralleling the ore drive at a minimum separation of 6 m under survey control. These drives provide the platform for fan drilling of the orebody. Up to 20 m strike panels are blasted in a single shot using electronic blasting techniques. Ore is mucked from the extraction level sill drive using tele-remote loaders. Aerials for tele-remote operation are installed through boreholes from the footwall drive, negating the need for personnel access to the sill drive. Once mucking of a stoping panel is complete, a laser scanning survey instrument is used to survey the final void for subsequent design and production reconciliation purposes. The survey instrument is mounted in the bucket of the tele-remote loader, and is also operated remotely. Finally, tele-remote loaders are used to dump waste rock fill from the upper sill drive. A system of flags and cameras installed in boreholes from the footwall drive assists the operator in locating the live stope edge during the filling cycle, again negating the need for personnel access.

The Mount Gordon operation, consisting of the Esperanza open cut mine and the unique Mount Gordon Ferric Leach processing plant, is operated by Western Metals Copper Ltd at Mount Gordon, 125 km north east of Mt Isa. The processing plant treats predominantly the secondary copper sulphide minerals, chalcocite and covellite. The gangue consists of massive pyrite and a range of silicified siltstones. The processing plant utilises a conventional single stage SAG/cyclone milling circuit, followed by low-temperature/low-pressure autoclave oxidation to produce copper in solution. The pregnant leach solution is treated via conventional SX/EW technology to produce copper cathode. Currently the plant is operating at a nominal production rate of 48 500 tpa copper. The Mount Gordon Ferric Leach technology is the worlds first integrated pressure leach/SX/EW process to be used to treat copper sulphides on a full plant scale. In the last six months, July to December 2001, the plant has emerged from a two-year postcommissioning phase to achieve steady state operation. This has been characterised by high plant availability and consistent production performance in excess of the name plate capacity of 45 000 tonnes. Production rates will continue to increase over the next 12 months to over 50 000 tpa via a planned process of incremental improvements. The pressure leach circuit has consistently achieved availabilities exceeding 95 per cent over the past 18 months. Notwithstanding this, the leach circuit still has a much greater requirement for planned maintenance than SX/EW. For much of the Mount Gordon processing plantÆs operating life, the leaching process has constrained production. Recent developments arising from detailed mass and energy balance modelling have now significantly improved leach capability, resulting in the plant bottleneck being shifted to electrowinning. In order to balance the capabilities of the two circuits however, the surge capacity between leach and SX/EW was increased substantially. This effectively de-coupled the higher capability but lower availability leach circuit from the lower capability but higher availability SX/EW circuit. As a result, electrowinning utilisation has increased to in excess of 98 per cent, which is reflected in a higher overall plant throughput.

Traditionally, the predominant drilling method in open pit mining has been large hole rotary drilling using cumbersome, inflexible equipment offering merely limited scope for improvements in pit design and overall costs. By contrast, the recent development of comparatively light high-pressure down-the-hole hammer crawlers has paved the way for new ideas and trends. High penetration rates coupled with superior mobility and fast set-ups contributing to substantial productivity gains have resulted in a renascence for this drilling method in open pits. The ability to cover a wide range of hole diameters and angles gives designers unique drill pattern possibilities especially when establishing steep and stable pit slopes. As pre-split holes, buffer holes and production holes all can be drilled by using the same equipment, there are, there are obvious advantages in production scheduling as well as in materials handling and service. This paper presents some case stories, which will demonstrate the benefits and improvements that the introduction of new drilling methods and equipment has brought to open pit mining operations.

Ore deposit models form the basis for numerous other economic decisions in the mining process. The success of these economic decisions therefore depend directly on the accuracy of the ore evaluation process. The Geology Department at the Sishen Iron Ore Mine is responsible for the generation of a reliable geological computer model of the rock material with predicted grades. This information is then utilised for further ore reserve calculations, mine planning, production scheduling and grade control. Owing to a very complex geological orebody, grades and beneficiation characteristics differ significantly from sample to sample. This means that ore evaluation is a difficult process and great reliance is placed on computer techniques. In 1993, preparation for the ISO 9002 quality certification of the mine motivated the Geology Department to hold formal `problem solving' sessions in order to identify and revise problem areas in operating

Water resources legislation in Brazil is evolving in a number ways. The nature of water resource ownership has changed in the last constitution (1988) so that now all water remains the property of the state and not the individual. There is also an increasing amount of legislation to control water access from the environment and regulation over water quality for water discharged. Finally, in some regions charging for water has been introduced and this is expected to become more wide-spread over the next few years. Increasing government attention to water legislation creates an increased need for mine sites to improve water management. As a fundamental basis for this, it is necessary to make robust estimates of mine site water balances, which also requires knowledge of the regional water balance to provide context for the mine water use. A conceptual model for mine site and environmental water balance is presented. Issues associated with conventional water monitoring are discussed. It is proposed that introduction of automated monitoring to provide comprehensive and consistent data is attractive. However, there remain a number of cultural and practical impediments to purchase, implementation and maintenance of effective monitoring, which are summarised.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. In 1874 a stockman, JE Wright of Foxlow Station, recognised copper mineralisation when he was about 12 kilometres south of the station. The find was on the banks of the Molonglo River. Several small mines were soon operating along the ridge above the river, and the village of Captain's Flat was established.One mining company established in the 1880s was Lake George Mines. It's name was to remain synonomous with the name of the town until mining and treatment ceased on 11 March 1962.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

During the forthcoming reline of No.3 Blast Furnace at the Newcastle Steelworks of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., facilities for the screening and weighing o' coke will be installed. The equipment is needed to optimise the sizing and the quantity of coke immediately prior to it being charged to the furnace. Up till the time the furnace was blown out in November, 1982, coke was charged to the furnace by volume, ie by skip fulls only. This resulted in variation to the ore/coke ratio charged due to bulk density changes and erratic skip filling levels. This in turn affects the heat balance of the furnace and causes fluctuations in hot metal chemistry and temperature. A coke rate penalty has to be paid also. Coke layer thickness in the furnace burden cannot be controlled closely, resulting in loss of control over gas distribution in the furnace. A grizzly type screen was incorporated in the skip loading chute but this ineffective method left a great amount of fines with the coke being charged to the furnace. Furnace permeability was therefore reduced, particularly in the hearth.

The author stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate information from the data relevant to a particular deposit as opposed to transfering parameters from one deposit to another.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

An empirical kinetic model is discussed that enables the number of stages in a carbon-in-pulp plant and the amount of carbon in each stage to be calculated for any desired metallurgical performance. It is shown that a knowledge of the kinetics of gold extraction by activated carbon in each stage assists plant operators in the important' areas of process control and optimization. Factors such as mixing efficiency, concentration and distribution of carbon through the plant, bypassing of pulp through a stage, and carbon poisoning are examined. The resin-in-pulp process for the extraction of gold cyanide is also discussed, and the chemistry of absorption and elution on strong- and weak-base resins is examined. In addition, operating results from a small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot plant are presented, and various applications in which resin-in-pulp may be preferable to carbon-in-pulp are discussed.

Ore reserve estimates form a basis for strategic mine planning at Argyle Diamonds open pit and alluvial operations. Most ore reserve statements are mainly concerned with resource tonnage and grade. Because diamond deposits are low grade, high value resources, diamond quality ($/carat) is also an important parameter. Relatively large variations in quality and/or grade can occur. These variations must be taken into account before the resource potential can be fully assessed. Computers (HP9000 and PC's) are utilised to compile resource inventories. Resource inventories are then ranked on an economic basis. This paper discusses the methods used to compile resource inventories and explains how these are then used to present ore reserve estimates in terms of resource potential.

The Gordonstone Project with a capital cost in excess of $500 million will become the largest underground coal mine in Australia. The project development decision was taken on 31 July, 1990 and at 31 May, 1991 construction was approximately 35 per cent complete. The first train of processed product coal will be railed to Gladstone during December 1992. The general theme of this paper therefore will address the planning and development processes at Gordonstone particularly the interrelatedness of technical, production, construction and environmental disciplines to ensure success during operations.

The mineralogy, maero- and micro-textures of Thackaringa ore are simple and have many counterparts among base metal-quartz-siderite vein type deposits elsewhere.The ore consists predominantly of galena, sphalerlte, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and arsenopyrite in a quartz and siderite gangue. Silver minerals, as such, appear to be lacking and silver values are no higher than in other sulphide ores of this type. These features contrast very markedly with those of the A.B.H. Consols Lode which appears to have emanated from the north end of the Broken Hill Main Lode Horizon during high grade regional metamorphism. The Consols Lode has been regarded as of Thackaringa type, and both are regarded as possibly arising from the remobilization of Main Lode Horizon ore. Whilst this may yet prove to be so it appears that the marked differences in mineral composition between the Consols and the Thackaringa types, would require somewhat different modes of regeneration.Thackaringa ore, as well as A.B.H. Consols ore, on this basis, would necessitate the development of a metahydrothermal ore fluid to account for their present apparently hydrothermal (or pseudo-hydrothermal) constitution...
