As part of global systems of mineral production and consumption, the Australian minerals sector is facing sustainability challenges across technological, social, ecological, economic and governance domains, as well as between local, national and global scales. To ensure that the Australian minerals sector progresses towards sustainability, it is imperative to understand the possible ways in which AustraliaÆs mineral resources could support sustainable futures. A significant research gap exists between the complex nature of questions concerning minerals sustainability and the reductionist methods available to deal with them. This paper argues the need for broader, more integrated approaches to questions concerning minerals sustainability, which can address multiple human perspectives, complex and æmessyÆ patterns and processes across multiple organisational, temporal and geographical scales and whole systems of mineral production and consumption. To inform the development of a new approach to minerals sustainability, this work reviews the contemporary understanding of the Australian minerals sustainability problematic, from the perspective of the Australian minerals sector (Minerals Council of Australia), the Australian research sector (Mudd 2007a, 2007b; Mudd and Ward 2008) and a multi-scale international project (MMSD 2002). This review shows the focus of current responses to the minerals sustainability problematic, identifies the need for an integrated approach to questions of minerals sustainability and addresses how different approaches are informed by underlying and unarticulated assumptions about the tolerability of tradeoffs between different societal goals, the treatment of uncertainty and the application of different conceptual geographical, organisational, temporal and life cycle scales to define the minerals sustainability problematic. The Mineral Resources Landscape proposed, offers an expanded conceptualisation of minerals sustainability, to link minerals production and consumption in an integrated assessment across the entire minerals supply chain, connecting social, ecological, technological, economic and governance domains across local, national and global scales. The key leverage points governing change in the Mineral Resources Landscape are identified as: the material source, extraction and production technologies, level of service and value, and consumption patterns. Mapping the key challenges facing the minerals sector, as identified in the review herein, indicates that the boundaries defining traditional conceptualisations of minerals sustainability focus on the material source and technology and ignore two very key drivers of the Mineral Resources Landscape û the æservicesÆ minerals offer to society and the æconsumption trendsÆ which assimilate these services into society. Understanding these overlooked aspects of the Mineral Resources Landscape, along with the conventional areas of focus, is essential for identifying the Australian minerals sector as a provider of sustainable mineral services. This insight prompts a reconsideration of the role of minerals services and consumption trends, together with the role of the material source and technology in shaping change and the emergence of sustainable systems of Australian minerals production and consumption, across multiple scales and domains.

Coal is of tremendous importance for the Czechoslovak econ- omy. The current annual primary energy demand being about 109 million tons of standard fuel (1 ton of standard fuel - 7,000 coal = 29,308 GJ), coal satisfies almost two thirds of our fuel consumption. If compared with the distribution of resources in the world's fuel and energy pattern, the situation in Czechos- lovakia is significantly different, as shown in Fig. I. One of the causes behind the difference is that the Czechoslo- vak oil and natural gas reserves and, hence, their production are insignificant, so that it is necessary to import them. Brown coal will continue to play an important role as a prin- cipal domestic source of primary energy even in the future. While the share of nuclear power is increasing, brown coal represents strategic reserves in the fuel and energy balance.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

Low-grade, porphyry copper type mineralization at the Moonmera prospect is related to the intrusion of a granodiorite porphyry mass into the Upper Permian "Gracemere granodiorite". Significant copper mineraliza- tion appears to be associated with the alteration assemblage quartz-sericite- kaolinite. The ore shell is surrounded by a zone where montmorillonite and kaolinite are in greater abundance and this assemblage is over- lapped, mainly at depth, by potassium feldspar alteration. Secondary biotite is abundant throughout the mineralized zone. Preliminary sulphur isotope results on the sulphide mineralization are compatible with a magmatic origin for the sulphur.

Time window analysis that limits the explosive mass fired within a specified time window (commonly eight milliseconds) has been used for many years in blast design by explosives engineers. Despite several warnings in the past that this technique has limited practical or scientific basis and, in many cases, does not effectively control vibration, almost every textbook and blasting manual refers to time window charge mass limits as a primary vibration control technique. It has become entrenched in some blast vibration management plans, despite being inappropriate for the particular situation. With the flexible initiation timing available with electronic detonation almost a practical reality, and the 8 ms constraints in-built into the signal tube initiation system thereby lifted, it is timely to review the significance of the 8 ms time window in controlling blast vibration. This paper re-visits the original research that led to the development of the 8 ms criteria and the non-supportive conclusion of the original researcher. Because airblast was not measured, the 8 ms time window was never intended to be applicable for airblast control. Examples of blast designs are given in this paper that comply with the 8 ms time window limit that result in substantially increased air and ground vibration, together with examples of blast design that does not satisfy time window considerations, which results in reduced air and ground vibration. Techniques that identify wavefront reinforcement, due to the combined effect of drilling pattern and delay sequence, can assist explosives engineers to avoid high blast vibration situations that result from the inappropriate application of time window techniques and other adverse delay combinations.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. The Trent-Severn Waterway is a 386 km long navigation route through central Ontario between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, and is operated by the Parks Canada Agency. Its primary focus is to pass recreational boats through a system of 44 locks. The Big Chute Marine Railway (BCMR) is one site in the system that provides transportation for boats. The BCMR carriage is used to transport boats and their passengers on the inclined railway a distance of 230 m over a natural barrier from one body of water to another, with an elevation difference of 18 m. The unique feature of the haulage system used in this application is the variable angle of the incline from about 20 per cent rise changing to horizontal and followed by 20 per cent decline. In such conditions, unlike as in standard incline haulage, special configuration of hoists and drives is required. On the uphill part of the track, there is a need to have a motoring mode, on the downhill part a regenerating mode and on the horizontal part a combination of motoring and regeneration is required. The original system was built in 1978 and employed four 100 hp dc drive mine hoists to haul the 100 tonne conveyance loaded with 90 tonnes of boats. Due to failures and operational problems with the original system, in 1999 Parks Canada awarded a turnkey contract to ABB for a new, modern system of four single drum hoists. The new system was put into operation in 2000, only six months after receiving the order. The hoists are controlled by digital drives and a digital control system. Due to dramatic changes in the load conditions for individual hoists involved, the new system features many interesting solutions like changing drive modes from speed to torque control and a multiple, regulated braking system. It is a unique hoisting system, which could be also used in mining applications.

Human exploration of Mars has been on the horizon of scientific goals for decades now, and as part of the objectives of human missions to various planets, one of the possible goals is opening new economic frontiers by the potential extraction and utilisation of resources, eg mining minerals and using surface regolith (Neukart, 2024). A comprehensive understanding of surface morphology, lithostratigraphy, basic structural geology, and civil engineering technology is essential to conduct mining operations for resource extraction on extraterrestrial planets. For instance, proper assessment of the risks associated with excavation and infrastructure construction under unique environments such as low gravity, surface irregularities, and the presence of regolith is fundamental. Such knowledge has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander (Knapmeyer- Edrun et al, 2021; Banerdt et al, 2020; Giardini et al, 2020). Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults exist and form regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. In this study, we focus on so-called graben structures, one of Mars’s common tectonic structures (Plescia, 1991; Banerdt et al, 1992; Hoogenboom Hagen, 2014). The study aims to provide additional information about the tectonic environment during the formation of such features and, in addition, the internal mechanical-rheological structure of Mars, revealed by the geometrical pattern of faults modelled and simulated in a laboratory environment.

The selection of the proper frother, specifically for a given ore, is essential in flotation. Traditionally, strong and stable froths are required in the scavengers, where metal recovery needs to be maximised, while selectivity must be achieved in the roughers and cleaners, where grade of concentrates is the main issue. The physical properties of a froth are determined both by frother type, by process water composition and by the amount and nature of the suspended particles. The evaluation of different frothers, in terms of metallurgical performance, is complicated at plant scale, since it may lead to periods of malfunctioning of the process and unacceptable decreases in recovery. On the other hand, evaluation based on frother chemistry only, is often unsatisfactory, because the frothing response is strongly ore dependent. A procedure, and proper tools, was developed at the Wark in order to perform the screening of candidate frothers at batch scale on real pulp samples. The main parameters related to froth stability (half-life time, froth height) are measured after introducing the pulp samples into a foaming column, where different conditions in terms of frother addition, agitation and aeration can be maintained. The approach has been applied to the selection of frothers for the flotation of an Australian sulfide ore. Procedure and results are discussed.

Statistical techniques of Box and Jenkins (1976) have been used to assess the existing control schemes and determine the dynamics of flash smelting furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Pertinent process variables, such as, oxygen flow, flux flow, matte grade and iron to silica ratio in slag, were considered in the analysis using routine operating data collected over two periods of operation. Results indicate inadequate control of some of the important variables. Dynamic characteristic parameters (dead time and response time) between a set of input and output variables were identified to improve optimisation of the existing thermodynamic model used for flash furnace control.

DeBeers Canada Mining Inc (DeBeers) recently submitted an Environmental Assessment (EA) for its proposed Snap Lake Diamond Mine located in Northwest Territories, Canada. As part of the EA process, a site water quality management plan must be developed. Plan development requires an integrated approach such that the key factors influencing water quality can be identified and managed to minimise potential impact. A system model was therefore developed to simulate the site-wide water quality conditions and mass loadings to the principal environmental receptor of concern, Snap Lake, during operations and post-closure. Requirements of the simulation included integrating hydrology, geochemistry, hydrogeology and site management practices in a dynamic way. A unique feature of the site was the need to accommodate a complex flow system that included a feedback loop between lake water and mine water. A system model was constructed using the GoldSim software package that integrated on-site water quality and flow measurements, as well as results from independent groundwater flow and geochemical modelling efforts. The GoldSim model simulated concurrently the movement of 39 solutes through the subsurface mine and surface facilities. Solute sources considered included four different waste rock and tailings types, explosives use in the mine, treatment plant discharge, and recycled process water for dust suppression. Separate solubility constraints were identified for different regions of the flow system (eg underground mine; treatment facility; surface water bodies). Kinetic test data were used to derive temperature-dependent rate constants for use in calculating mass inputs from surface sources such as waste rock piles. The model generated water quality estimates over time for a variety of management scenarios at several potential discharge locations. The integrated approach used by the model was effective in identifying the significance of key factors influencing overall water quality such as explosives use, mine water inflow rates, waste rock reaction rates, site/mine management options, and effectiveness of treatment. The model provides an example of an effective tool for comprehensive, integrated system evaluation and management.

Peak Gold Mines (PGM), a member of the Rio Tinto Group, is an underground and open cut gold mining operation located near Cobar, NSW. A multi-phase study was initiated in 2001 in support of developing a dry æmoisture store and releaseÆ cover system design for the PGM tailings dam, which contains potentially acid-forming tailings material. The first phase consisted of characterising the tailings and potential cover material (waste rock from an open cut operation) as well as soil-atmosphere cover design modelling. The second phase involved construction of two cover system field trials on the tailings dam and installation of a variety of field instruments to monitor the hydraulic performance of the test covers during all seasons of the year. Field performance monitoring commenced in April 2002 and will continue for a minimum of two wet-dry climate cycles (third phase), prior to using the field data for calibration and subsequent validation of numerical models developed for the cover system trials (fourth phase). This paper describes the work completed for the first two project phases and also discusses the initial performance of the cover system trials.

The problem of spontaneous heating/fire is very common in coal mines all over the world. The coal industry faces many problems day by day due to the occurrence of spontaneous heating in the open pit coal mines. Presently, about 70 per cent of total coal production in Indian mines is being carried out by open pit mining. Fire in coal, particularly in open pit mines not only causes irreparable loss of natural wealth but also damages the surface structures and pollutes the environment. It is well known that 75 per cent of the fires occur due to the spontaneous combustion of coal. Spontaneous heating is a very common occurrence in coal mines and is a major factor contributing to mine fire. The liability of coal to spontaneous heating causes many serious problems before, during and after mining. In opencast mines, coal immediately oxidises and catches fire due to the intrinsic characteristics of coal, such as low rank, high moisture, high volatile matter, presence of sulfur in the form of pyrites, low crossing point temperature (CPT) and ignition point temperature (IPT) value and less incubation period. In opencast mines, when the coal benches are left idle for a longer time, heat accumulation takes place in favourable conditions and sometimes leads to fire. The purpose of this paper is to present the different successful case studies regarding the safety management of open pit coal mines from occurrences of spontaneous heating/fire.

A major problem that has continued to plague the surface and underground coal industries is blast induced damage to the coal seam. Blasting Analysis International, in conjunction with a number of other organizations, has continued to address this concern through 14 years of field research in 68 full-scale production environments worldwide. Compiled results were obtained from varying field conditions. These included single and multiple seam coal mines, horizontal, rolling and steeply dipping coal seams and varied borehole diameters (ranging from 102 to 381 mm) and when using various explosive formulations. Results are discussed in detail along with the tools, test methods and analysis techniques to identify and quantify the problems. Over ten major causes of coal damage were identified. A number of practical and economic recommendations are presented that can benefit the entire coal and blasting industry especially in commercial operations whose economic growth relies heavily upon recovering an undamaged coal seam.

A brief review is presented of the mechanisms and causes of spoil pile failures which have occurred at the Goonyella Mine. In particular, the results of a recent geo- technical investigation of the spoil dumps in the Cleanskin pit are briefly presented. Spoil pile hydrology is discussed in relation to the use of effective stress concepts in the analysis of spoil pile stability. Experience in relation to stabilisation of dragline dumps is discussed as well as the likelihood of current techniques being success- ful in the prevention of gross failures if prestrip material is placed in existing spoil piles. Parameters exerting a major control on dump stability are outlined.

It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. Oaky Creek Coal Pty Ltd. currently mines high quality coking coal from both underground and open cut operations at its Oaky Creek Mine. Coal is transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay and to the Gladstone Coal Terminal. Oaky No.1 Underground Mine, Open Cut and Highwall Mine have concentrated on seams from the German Creek Formation, one of the major productive coal measure formations in the Bowen Basin Coalfields. This paper is concerned with the design and operation of storage and discharge facilit- ies for bulk solids handling. It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.
