At the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines, the largest diluent of the copper concentrate is liberated fine pyrite. Laboratory flotation tests carried out as a function of grind and flotation Eh in combination with surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have identified the major mechanisms of iron sulphide flotation. It was found that a significant proportion of the iron sulphide minerals had surface coverages of graphitic carbon, sufficient to impart moderate hydrophobicity in the absence of collector. A smaller, but economically significant proportion of chalcopyrite was also affected by the graphitic carbon coating. Two methods were tested to reduce the impact of the natural floatability of the iron sulphides on concentrate grades. 1. Depression through the use of organic depressants. 2. Preflotation to remove the "naturally hydrophobic" iron sulphides (flotation independant of Eh ) prior to chalcopyrite flotation. Preflotation was tested at the pilot plant scale. It was found that the amount of chalcopyrite reporting to the preflotation rougher concentrate could be minimised through flotation at a mildly reducing Eh by the use of nitrogen as the flotation gas to maintain the low Eh conditions resulting from grinding. The preflotation rougher concentrate was upgraded to an iron sulphide concentrate or a low grade copper concentrate.

At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

There are many underground mines with shaft or decline access with limited production capacity or where the mine may become uneconomical as trucking costs escalate with increasing depth of the decline. In such cases a need may exist for a shaft hoisting system which can be constructed more quickly and more economically than a shaft sunk by conventional methods. Relatively cheap small diameter shafts can be constructed by raise boring. This paper describes a simple hoisting system which has been designed to take advantage of the benefits of raise boring. The system uses twin bored raises with a double drum winder hoisting a skip in each hole. The design concept is based on 1. accepting that the raises cannot be truly straight or vertical, 2. using the raise to guide the conveyance, and 3. minimising operating, maintenance, and capital costs. The hoisting system requires a certain degree of accuracy in the alignment of the twin raises. A survey of raise boring practice showed that the required accuracy could probably be achieved with conventional techniques. This paper presents the water management plan of the Mae Moh Project in the North of Thailand, which includes a large lignite opencast mine and thermal power plants. Lignite production will increase from the present 5.5 million tons per annum to approximately 20 million tons per annum by 1995 when the pit area will be about 20 sq.km. and the depth at over 300 meters. Seven power plants are proposed of which two are under construction. The total capacity to be installed is 2,925 MW. The principles considered for water management are firstly flood protection, including drainage of the mining pit and diversion of the Mae Moh stream away from proposed future mining areas; and secondly, a plan to meet the water requirement of the thermal power plants, while maintaining downstream supplies for irrigation and other purposes. The limited annual run-off of Mae Moh and Mae Chang watershed basins are inadequate for the proposed power plants. A study has been prepared to compare two approaches, namely conveying water from remote watersheds to meet the water requirement of the power plants up to total installed capacity; or by limiting future total generation, at the existing site, to only 2025 MV.

In a minerals processing context, sustainability is about using natural resources more efficiently to achieve maximum economic benefits with minimal environmental impacts. It embodies five overarching themes, which the paper will illustrate with practical examples from Australian minerals processing plants. These are:resource utilisation and materials efficiency,process waste reduction and enhancement of co-product values,reduction of water use and impacts,reduction of energy requirements and greenhouse gas emissions, andenhanced control of minor elements and toxic materials. Sustainability could be embedded profitably in minerals plant design in three dimensions: 1.technology,2.design, and3.operations. This presentation discusses a set of principles that could be applied to minerals processing technologies and provides an outline of sustainability assessment and opportunities evaluation tools. The application of the tools is illustrated through a case study by analysing a suite of nickel processing technology routes. The analysis reveals that current generation of nickel processing technologies do possess real potential to emerge as sustainability champions in integrated processing of nickel ores and concentrates, if they are designed, engineered, and operated for sustainability and adapted effectively to site specific constraints and opportunities. The paper will address data gaps and uncertainties regarding the impact of scaling up of pilot-plant performance, and provides strategies to overcome them.

Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

Development of the Greenvale orebody, containing 40,000,000 tonnes of nickel ore, began in 1971 and production commenced in 1974. Annual capacity is 2,800,000 wet tonnes. The variations in ore grade and physical characteristics which occur throughout the ore- body had a major influence on the selection of mining methods, grade control procedures, and equipment. After removal of overburden by scrapers, ore is excavated by draglines sidecasting into windrows. Feed to the crushing plant is .reclaimed by front end loaders into rear dump trucks according to a grade selection pro- gramme. After crushing, ore is stockpiled into blended units of ore of required quality. Ore is stacked and reclaimed for train loading using techniques designed to give maximum mixing of ore characteristics through Bach unit. These procedures are repeated on discharge at the plant site at Yabulu. The railway, constructed by Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. to Q.G.R. standard, and operated by the Q.G.R., is 216 km long and includes eight major bridges and three tunnels. Two trains per day, one of four locomotives and 92 waggons, and one of three locomotives and 69 waggons, haul crushed ore to Yabulu. Train loading is semi-automatic. A small township and associated services have been constructed for employees at Green- Vale.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. So settle back in an advice-receiving mode, and please forgive me if I come across as a master of the bleedin' obvious, as Basil once accused his wife Sybil of being in the unforgettable Fawlty Towers.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

The Ungay-Malabago polymetallic deposit, currently owned by Lafayette Mining, is located on the eastern end of the island of Rapu-Rapu which lies east of the city of Legazpi in the Philippines. The island is sparsely populated and has largely been deforested by extensive logging some 30-40 years ago.The deposit is situated on a plateau some 200 m asl and lies about one kilometre inland from the coast. The site topography is difficult with minimal flat areas for plant facilities. The region around Legazpi is subject to volcanic activity and though the island is not affected it is in a seismic zone. There is no other mining or other industrial activity on the island, the local inhabitants being engaged in subsistence farming and fishing. These activities place a high level of responsibility on the mine operator with regard to the environment and the provision of employment and training to the local inhabitants. Although no previous mining was carried out at Ungay, shallow pit mining for high-grade direct smeltable copper ore has occurred during the mid-1900s in an area, known as Hixbar, some 2 km west of the deposit This area is currently being explored by Lafayette.

In southeastern China, offshore Tertiarybasins are buried underneath the broad continental shelf areas from Taiwan to Hainan Island. These basins bear relatively similar characteristics of structure, stratigraphy and tectonics. Based on age and tectonic framework, these Tertiary basins are divided into two groups of Paleogene basin and Neogene basin (Fig.1 and 2). However, observations of extensional structures indicate that the Paleogene basins are rift basins; and the predominant structural features are NE-SW trending half grabens and fault blocks. In a regional scale, these half grabens and adjacent uplifts represent a horst-and-graben structural style. Neogene basins are downwarp basins lying on the tilting continental shelf. Late Tertiary sequences are relatively undeformed but locally with minor folding and thrusting during the Pliocene-Pleistocene.Seismic stratigraphy and well data indicate that the Early Tertiary strata are commonly tilted and disturbed as nonmarine to marginal marine facies deposited in the wedge-shaped half grabens; the Late Tertiary strata are generally parallel undisturbed marine facies accumulated in the enlarged downwarp basins overlying the infilled half grabens. In general, three major regional unconformities formed during the Late Cretaceous, the Late Eocene and the Middle Miocene. Widespread extrusive basaltic flows are commonly associated with these unconformities.

Since 1978, the nickel concentrator at Leinster has been subject to continuous change. In 1971 a significant nickel sulphide deposit was discovered on Leinster Downs Station, within three years the extent of the deposit was determined. In 1978 the Agnew Mining Company began production of nickel concentrate from the Perseverance Mine and continued to do so until production ceased in 1986. In 1988 WMC purchased the mothballed project and began the first phase of many expansion initiatives. Milestones in the life of Leinster have included:open cut mining of the Perseverance orebody and the discovery of the RockyÆs Reward orebody, as well as the metallurgical challenges in treating each of these; underground mining at both Perseverance and RockyÆs Reward; construction and commissioning of the WMC grinding and flotation circuits; variations in the reagent schemes, including the introduction of æliquidÆ reagents; development of mill linings to reduce maintenance; circuit re-configuration and simplification; development of Harmony open cut; strategies for increasing throughput at the drier; and changes to tailings facilities to cope with increased throughput. This paper outlines the steps which have been required to expand the Leinster Nickel Concentrator from 650 000 tpa to 2.5 Mtpa and those steps which will be required in the future.

he Melbourne City Link project will complete a missing link between two existing major freeways in the Melbourne road network, providing a much needed bypass of the Central Business District for through traffic. The project, which is being financed under a BOOT arrangement with the Victorian State Government, involves the upgrading of significant stretches of existing freeway and the construction of new sections involving viaducts and tunnels. The tunnel sections, which are the focus of this paper, are beneath residential and business areas, the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens and significant sporting facilities where surface construction would be either impossible or unacceptable (reference Figure 1). The shorter, 1.62 km west bound Domain tunnel comprises two cut and cover sections through Olympic Park then the Yarra River, the driven section of 0.68 km length and exits through a common cut and cover section with the east bound tunnel under St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. The longer 3.76 km east bound tunnel commences at the common portal, through cut and cover under St Kilda Road then 2.86 km of driven section before exiting at a cut and cover section at Burnley. The longer Burnley tunnel has an access and ventilation shaft at approximately its mid point.

The BHAS copper-lead matte leach process, developed in Port Pirie, South Australia, has been in operation on a commercial scale since 1984. This process is one of many developed in the past decade to recover copper via the hydrometallurgical route. In essence, the process involves a single stage agitative leach of 100% -75um matte in an acid chloride-sulphate lixiviant with gaseous oxygen as oxidant. The leach temperature is controlled at 85¦C to assist with reaction kinetics. After leaching, divalent copper is recovered from solution via a conventional solvent extraction/electrowinning circuit to yield cathode copper for sale The BHAS matte leach process has several unique characteristics cf. other commercial oxidative acid leach processes. These include i) the use of gaseous 02 as oxidant ii) H2SO4 addition as make up acid iii) Relatively low chloride ion addition (30 g/1) For this reason, extensive work was carried out into the optimization of leaching by Meadows (1985). Variables investigated included ò Oxygen flow-rate ò Agitation intensity ò Leach temperature ò Free acidity ò Chloride ion concentration ò Matte particle size The current work was conducted to determine the effect of cooling rate, and hence mineralogy, on the leaching characteristics.
