The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

The VERT project 1993 - 1998 laid the technical foundation for curtailing the emission of fine particles from diesel engines at Swiss underground workplaces. The targeted maximum was 100 ¦g/m3 EC. Extensive laboratory and field investigations demonstrated that this specification is only attainable with modern diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems that almost eliminate particles in the entire lung penetrating size range from 20 nm to 2.5 ¦m. In January 2000, Switzerland mandated compulsory particle filters in underground workplaces, particularly in tunnelling, irrespective of engine age, size and type. After the implementation, the particle concentration in the respiratory air was below 40 ¦g/m3 EC, compared to earlier values of up to 750 ¦g/m3 EC. Deployed DPFs have proven filtration rates of 99 per cent in the entire size range of alveoli intruding particles. The DPFs are as durable as the engine, suffer no ageing and require minimal maintenance. The failure rate is below three per cent annually. Of the 6000 retrofitted construction machines in Switzerland, about 400 are deployed underground. Prerequisites for this quality are a sophisticated certification procedure, electronic monitoring of DPF operation and meticulous periodic exhaust gas inspection of the engines.

This study represents a part of comprehensive research aimed at integrating nickel into a thermodynamic database constantly developed at Pyrosearch. The behaviour of Ni in calcium-ferrite slags is considered. An integrated approach combining experimental and thermodynamic modelling methods has been employed to predict phase equilibria in the NiO-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system under oxidising conditions and in equilibrium with the metal FeNi phase. The compositions of liquid slags and coexisting solid solutions have been determined through the analysis of equilibrated and quenched samples by electron probe microanalysis technique (EPMA). The research results are presented in the form of liquidus projections on the corresponding phase diagrams, considering both oxidising and reducing conditions. The solubility of Ni in spinel, dicalcium ferrite and calcium oxide as well as solubility of Fe and Ca in Ni monoxide, have been examined under several atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the compositions of the NiO-FeO monoxide in equilibrium with metal phase have been studied. The experimental data not only support the outcomes of thermodynamic modelling but also validate the parameters of the applied thermodynamic models, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the integrated approach.

A study is presented of the theoretically possible initiation systems for outbursts and the subsequent propagation mechanism.Previous occurrences of outbursts and their correlation to the theoretical system are described. An estimation of the energy release from two energy sources, gas strain energy and rock/coal strain energy, is presented and the relative importance of each source in the severity of outbursts. Summary: The description of mechanisms of outbursting follows the examination of these phenomena at Collinsville in Bowen No. 2 mine and at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Quantitative material contained in the paper refers to Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Clearly from the work carried out to date gas release has a major part to play in the out- bursting at both of these collieries. In the case of the December 1 1978 outburst at Leichhardt Colliery energy release estimates place gas strain energy release contributing eight times the energy of that from rock/coal strain energy. Even the normal outbursts at Leichhardt Colliery appear to show this trend. Estimates of energy released are for comparative purposes between gas and rock strain energy and the values obtained may be regarded as approximate.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

To date, few studies have been made regarding the energy requirements of the Australian mining and mineral processing industries. This paper indicates that these industries use a substantial proportion of the total Australian energy input (32.7% in 1971-72 and 36.10% in 1974-75). With the growth orientation of these industries, this input is likely to increase. Data shows that mining energy requirementE varied from 4.22% (of total Australian energy requirements) in 1971-72 to 4.16% in 1974-75. Energy requirements for the total mineral processing industries increased from 28.49% to 31.93% for the same period. The total estimated primary energy input varied from 22.56% to 25.2%, whilst indirect energy use, in the form of electricity increased from 10.16% to 10.66%; in the same period. Analysis of primary energy input data within the processing industries (1973/4) showed that the Iron and Steel Industry consumed 15.03% of the Australian total consumption, Non-Ferrous metals, 5.43%, Cement, 1.64%, and Refractories, 1.59%. While South Africa is well endowed with mineral resources, it is generally accepted that its future will be determined more by the development of its human resources than its mineral wealth. The country has throughout its modern history suffered from an over-supply of unskilled labour and a shortage of skilled and professional manpower. There has furthermore always been an over-reliance on Whites as an internal source of professional manpower, supplemented by immigration wherever possible. Better utilisation of other population groups in professional positions has been hampered by the general lack of education and training among such groups. Although many problems still remain, there are emerging trends which are likely to positively affect the training of professional manpower in the future. The direct and indirect influences that are likely to affect professional training at the macro level include 1. government policy and objectives in respect of manpower education and training, 2. the emergence of technikons as fully- fledged tertiary education institutions, 3. demographic trends in South Africa as they pertain to education, 4. political and statutory developments in the country, 5. industry involvement in tertiary education, and 6. professional registration.

Measurement of pressure distribution under the base plate of the Hemscheidt 2-leg 800-ton shield was performed underground for two shifts using 12 pressure cells installed in two rows, one each under each split base plate. Pressure distribution was uneven depending on contact condition. In general the highest base pressure occurred at 1/3 of the base plate contact length from the rear edge. The resultant was near vertical, and the pressure under the tail side split base plate was always higher than the head side. For comparison, pressure distribution on the canopy and under the base plate was also measured under controlled conditions at the USBM's Mine Simulator Testing Facilities in Pittsburgh, PA. A total of 45 tests were conducted under several simulated contact conditions. The results showed that the actual contact area is highly dependent on the compliance of the immediate roof and floor due to the sloped canopy tip and a base lifting device under the base tip. The loading distribution tends to change in magnitude and profile as the leg pressure increases. The base lifting device exaggerates the high toe loading on the base plate characteristics of this type of shield support.

Depletion of shallow ore reserves is forcing the South African gold mining industry to exploit reefs at ever-increasing depths. By 2010 around 30 per cent of South African gold production probably will come from depths greater than 3 km (Johnson and Schweitzer, 1996). At such depths, virgin stresses will rise significantly, producing complex rock engineering problems (Malan and Basson, 1998). Concern over structural instability at depth has led planners to seek a technology capable of ædetection of geological structures with a displacement of 2 m or greater (or as appropriate to the mining technique) 200 m ahead of mining at an acceptable costÆ. Borehole radar probably is such a technology. Cover holes are drilled routinely ahead of development. The evaluation of its candidacy for a tactical role in ultra-deep gold mining dependsùamong other thingsùupon establishing the electromagnetic characteristics of the environment hosting significant gold reefs. The Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) is one such reef. Recent borehole radar field trials, presented here, suggest that the VCRÆs overburden is a remarkably translucent, clutter-free dielectric with a Q of ~35 and that the VCR itself is the dominant radar reflector.

Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.

The in situ behaviour of claystone floors associated with the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifem Seams has been studied using a comprehensive suite of stress and displacement monitors. The instrumentation was supplemented by in situ and laboratory testing of the claystone materials. The instrumentation demonstrated that the presence of claystone floors is associated with floor heave, extra rib spall, and settlement of the pillar into the floor. Horizontal floor extensometers showed that the depth of extrusion of clay was limited to 1-2 in. A pore pressure transducer installed in a claystone floor demonstrated the possible existence of short-term undrained behaviour of the claystone. Long term swelling of destressed claystone was also documented. Settlement of pillars into claystone floors can be analysed using simple elastic theory. The assumption of plane strain is valid for most claystone thickness/pillar width aspect ratios. Floor heave can be analysed using bearing capacity concepts. However, it is considered that heave is the result of local bearing capacity failure in the rib spall zone. The advantage of this model is that the bearing capacity equation can be applied without resort to unrealistically high factors of safety.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

The WA Goldfields is a highly productive gold and nickel mining area, but is arid with highly saline groundwater. Groundwater is widely used to supply process water to mines in the region but high groundwater salinity, commonly exceeding 50 000 mg/L TDS, tends to increase processing costs, limit end uses for the water, cause problems with disposal and potentially increase impacts on a sensitive arid environment. The area has low rainfall (200 - 270 mm/year) but run-off, particularly during cyclonic events, is high. Our experience suggests that stream flow from catchments in the area can produce a divertible yield of 8 - 17 ML/km2/year. An evaluation of stream flow harvesting using AnglogoldÆs Jubilee Pit predicted that 1000 ML/year of good quality water could reliably be supplied to the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Because of high rainfall variability, it is likely that an alternate source of water supply will be necessary when operating a surface-water harvesting scheme in the WA Goldfields. However, a combination surface/groundwater supply could have substantial cost, operational and environmental benefits compared to traditional supply systems that utilise groundwater only.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

The scope, pace and depth of mining is creating a need for improved ground control strategies to meet mine safety standards. Ground control and associated conservation problems relating to subsidence and the disposal of mining and metallurgical wastes can be resolved by mine filling with selected reject materials. The lack of suitable criteria to evaluate the applicability of such materials and especially cemented forms of fill is considered. Sulphide wastes, which are prone to oxidize, and cement are inexpensive mine fills, but their incorrect use can give rise to problems which are briefly described. Research work concerned with the utilization of sulphide wastes such as mill tailings, to produce fill with self-cementing properties has shown that the development of cohesion and strength is attributable to natural oxidation processes controlled by the physical and chemical composition of the fill mass. The cementing is caused by a number of oxidation products, and is most effective when the mineral pyrrhotite is present. The concepts of fill design are outlined and various criteria for assessing durability and deformational properties are proposed. Specimens prepared in the laboratory are capable of attaining unconfined compressive strengths up to 28 MN/m2.

Near Kangiara in south eastern New South Wales, Australia, a number of polymetallic (copper, lead and zinc, with minor silver and gold) mineral deposits occur within a relatively broad volcanic rock belt, intercalated with limestones, sandstones and shales, of Silurian age. The Kangiara deposit was the most significant for the region.Adjacent to the Kangiara deposit, the unaltered country rocks are more rhyolitic than elsewhere in the volcanic rock belt, and the mineralization is accompanied by silicification, chloritization, sericitization and argillization. The host rocks typically contain a higher K20:Na2O ratio than the volcanic rocks not associated with mineralization.In the Kangiara deposit the mineralization consist of massive (in part banded), fragmental, disseminated and vein-type copper-lead-zinc ores, with the massive and fragmental types divisible into pyrite-rich, chalcopyrite-rich and sphalerite-galena-rich varieties. With respect to this mineralogy, the ore textures and sulphur isotope compositions the deposit can be compared to the stratiform mineralization associated with Silurian acid volcanic rocks at Woodlawn, Captains Flat and elsewhere in the Lachlan Fold Belt, as well as the Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan.
