The highest grades of the Porgera gold deposit, Papua New Guinea, are contained in Zone 7 due to the presence of the Roamane fault, which acted as channelway of the gold-bearing fluids. Prior to the development and underground mining of this fault-controlled high-grade zone it was critical to provide grade estimates of relatively small mining units, and of the proportion of mining units above cutoff. To be applicable to Zone 7 of Porgera a grade estimation method should account for the following:1. the highly skewed and apparently lognormal distribution of the grades,2. the rapid drop off of the local mean grade and the variance as the distance to the Roamane fault increases,3. the presence of high grade pockets in the footwall, away from that fault, and4. the existence of variograms for the logs with sills parallel to the fault and without sills perpendicular to it.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

The mining industry internationally seems on the verge of a major underground support revolution as suppliers, mines, consultants and researchers develop, test and use thin support (structural) membranes (or superskins as they are commonly called) mainly as a replacement for screen/wire mesh. Thick membrane support in the form of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used since the 1950s in underground mines. Shotcrete, in mines, is generally applied at a thickness between 25 and 100 mm depending on the need. Thin membranes are however applied at a typical thickness between 2 and 6 mm. Certain thin membranes have been available for several years (Tannant et al, 1999), but the intense interest in such supports has only grown in the last few years. The interest lies mainly in the potential to safely reduce the mining cycle time and hence improve productivity. There is however considerable confusion concerning such supports, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about thin support membranes.

Significant advances in regional geochemical exploration techniques have been made over the last 5 years in the search for gold deposits. This has occurred largely by the development of the bulk cyanide ex- tractable gold (BLEG) also known as the Bulk Cyanide Leach (BCL) tech- nique. The technique has been developed and designed for Australian conditions and has two main ad- vantages over the pan concentrate technique preferred by many ex- plorationalists, viz:,. 1. It is designed to collect ultra fine gold common to epithermal and other north Queensland types of gold deposits. 2. The large sample (approx.5 kg) allows very low detection levels, ranging between 0.1 and 0.05 ppb Au. The use of the BLEG technique in exploration has led to the discovery of the Wirralie gold deposit and numerous other epithermal gold prospects previously undetected by pan concentrate and minus 80 mesh (pathfinder elements) surveys in the Drummond Basin.

The Goldfields extend from Norseman in the Eastern Goldfields to Marble Bar in the Pilbara; a distance of approximately 1,500 km. (Figure 1). Tailings dams are conspicuous on the relatively flat and featureless Goldfields' landscape. They impound wastes from mining and processing operations. Tailings dams interact dynamically with their environment and progressively consolidate as water is removed. Water recovery systems have been used over the last decade to improve water conservation, increase dam stability and to extend the service life of the dam. Without water recovery, dams would need to be significantly larger to permit the tailings to dry back sufficiently to support subsequent depositions. The paper reviews inter-relationships between the tailings dam and its environment and discusses water recovery systems, that are commonly used. The effectiveness of water management is illustrated by reference to seasonal water recoveries measured by Western Mining Corporation (W.M.C.) at their number 2 dam at Kambalda.

The Chigirishima Smelter of Toho,Zinc Co., Ltd. is the largest independent custom lead smelter in Japan and produces about 60,000 tonnes/yr of electrolytic lead. The quantity of slag produced by blast furnace is approximately 65,000 tonnes/yr, 30,000 tonnes/yr of which is sent back to the sintering plant for mixing with lead concentrates. The remaining slag used to be piled up at the yard until the operation of the fuming plant started in July 1977. We examined the slag fuming process with the purpose of achieving: 1) Improvement of the operating results by recovering zinc and lead from blast furnace slag. The lead content in slag at Chigirishima is slightly high, because the height of blast furnace shaft is low and consequently the quantity of sinter smelted per area at tuyere level is rather large. 2) Production of a salable slag as raw material for cement by lowering zinc and lead content in slag.

The Mae Moh coal deposit was discovered some 60 years ago by villagers who noticed spontaneous combustion of coal outcrops. The first production began in the 1950's to fuel a fertilizer plant and a 12.5MW power station. During the period 1976 to 1979, three 75MW power station units were constructed on site. These have a total daily coal consumption of some 5000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of approximately 60 000 tonnes total capacity. Stacked coal is reclaimed by means of a front end loader onto reclaim conveyors. During the years 1983 to 1986 four 150MW power station units were constructed east of the eastern seam subcrop, sons 2 km from the original power station complex. These have a daily coal consumption of nearly 12000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of total capacity 270000 tonnes, equipped with two stackers and two bucket-wheel reclaimers for a totally mechanised system.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along the Waiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of "platinum" were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS)and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni. R^~

Major exploration companies can have a problem with what to do with small precious metal ore bodies located through exploration programmes. Low tonnage, but high grade, ore bodies too small to justify in-house development.1.2 Ban Ban Mining is a Sunshine Coast based partnership with considerable expertise in mining and earthmoving which specializes in the mining of small/medium size ore bodies on behalf of the tenement holder on a profit sharing or royalty basis.1.3 The partnership's first successful venture has been the mining and vat leaching of a small 40,000 tonne ore body with a head grade of 5 gm/tonne gold and 32 gms/tonne silver, situated near Ban Ban Springs in southeast Queensland.1.4 This paper looks at the low cost vat leaching method of treatment, as an alternative to CIP and CIL in the processing of low tonnage/high grade precious metal ore bodies.

The term "industrial minerals" covers a vary wide field. However in Australia this field tends to be characterised by the follow- ing: (1) Relatively low unit values. (2) Product specifications can be exacting compared to the metalliferous field. (3) Product specifications often have to be tailored to the needs of the end user. (4) Beneficiation plants tend to involve low capital outlays relative to the metalliferous field. However they often have to produce products'to a range of specifications. (5) Technology often influences what can be considered as reserves. (6) Because of low unit values industrial minerals tend to be relatively cost sensitive. This is particularly the case in regard to transport. (7) Location of deposits near to major urban areas (markets) dictates a greater pressure on ecological aspects. (8) In Australia there has been a tendency to vertical integration largely due to the restricted market available. Reserves assessment is shown to be critically dependent upon the above Factors.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

Over the last 15 years the contract mining concept has developed into an integral part of the Australian mining industry. Today it is a $2 billion per annum industry with the potential to continue to grow at a rate of between ten and 20 per cent. Australian contract miners have also exported the concept overseas where growth prospects are unlimited. The industry today is at a cross-road where both contractors and mine owners must consider the current state of the contract mining industry and where it is heading. To look at the present and the future, it is necessary to look back at the history of contract mining and why it has developed. Current industry concerns can then be summarised and the areas that need to be considered to enable the industry to prosper, reviewed. The ultimate goal is to reach solutions with benefits to both the mining companies and the contractors.

In presenting the paper, Mr. Davey quoted subsequent work which yielded k, at miscibility gap composition, of about 50.We can confirm the authors' findings for k j 300 for nearly pure tin to k 2 about 50 (average 47) from our own experience and from repeat experiments on materials described by the authors, at 1150°C.During laboratory-scale trials we also found confirmation of the authors' view that it is more difficult to reach equilibrium from the high-iron (in slag) side than from the low-iron (high-tin) side. Working from the high-iron side tends to yield results that point to a high k, leading to optimistic values of iron/tin ratio in final slags. In practice the smelting of a tin concentrate, unless it is exceptionally low in tin and high in iron, must yield initially a tin-rich slag and therefore equilibrium can only be reached from the "tinny" side.

Diamond drilling since early 2006 has identified an epithermal gold-silver (Au-Ag) deposit beneath 140 m to >400 m of cover. The Fruta del Norte discovery had an inferred resource estimate of 58.9 Mt grading 7.2 g/t Au in October 2007. The mineralisation is hosted by Mid-Late Jurassic andesite and andesite porphyry in a regional fault zone beneath mainly post-mineral but in part syn-mineral Late Jurassic cover. The intermediate sulfidation-style deposit formed before and in part during deposition of epiclastic cover in the fault related pull apart basin. In addition to its size and obvious economic importance, the widespread occurrences of visible gold and exquisitely preserved epithermal textures will make Fruta del Norte an important learning tool for explorationists seeking epithermal mineralisation in theAndes and elsewhere. Success for underground coal mine operators in the 1990's and beyond will be dependent upon better understanding of the dynamics of their operating environment, and extension of emerging technologies to reach new levels of output and productivity. The Collieries Division of B.H.P. Steel International Group clearly identifies with the concept of business/product life cycles - and the need to adopt strategies that can drive the business successfully into the future. Three main thrusts within BHP Collieries Division relate to: 1) Detailed assessment of current mines to determine: a) The real output potential of the current facilities. b) What factors now inhibit the full potential from being realised. c) Opportunities that exist to enhance overall mine performance. 2) Based upon the findings of these studies, putting into place cost effective strategies and systems for the ongoing "tuning" of the mine. 3) of new/improved technology primarily in areas of: a) Coal cutting and underground coal clearance. b) Controlling the overall mine gas Regime.

TasmaniaÆs mineral endowment has resulted in 600 abandoned mines. Commonly occurring sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can generate acid drainage and also mobilise heavy metals. Due to the StateÆs steep topography and high rainfall the risk to water quality in the receiving environments is significant. Surface waters impacted by abandoned mine sites typically showed high sulfate and metal distribution at pH range of 2.0 to 5.0. The impacted waters generally showed metal distribution in the high acid/extreme metal to low acid/low metal range. A similar trend was shown by sulfate distribution. Elevated levels of metals and sulfate downstream from several abandoned mine sites indicated that active sulfide oxidation is occurring and these sites may be potential point sources of metal pollution in the receiving environment. High correlation between metal and sulfate distribution suggests that sulfate distribution in surface waters may be used as a cost-effective investigation tool for preliminary assessment of acid drainage.

Geological models for the exploration and evaluation of epithermal Au and porphyry Cu-Au deposits rely upon a classification of different deposit styles and an understanding of the evolutionary processes of deposit formation. These models guide the interpretation of subsurface deposit anatomy in order to target drill testing and assist the explorationist to focus on the more prospective projects. It is important for the explorationist to distinguish between different styles of magmatic arc Au deposits as each style displays distinctive characteristics with exploration implications. Magmatic arc Au deposits are distinguished as porphyry Cu-Au formed at depths of 1 - 2 km at the apophysis to larger, buried, magmatic sources which are also the ultimate metal sources for the varying styles of shallower level epithermal Au deposits. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits characteristically develop from dilute circulating meteoric waters and are distinguished as the group with a closer relationship to intrusive source rocks, and slightly higher sulfide contents (still generally

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.
