Mt Muro was a gold and silver mine in Central Kalimantan on the Island of Borneo, Indonesia. Aurora Gold through its Indonesian subsidiary Indo Muro Kencana owned the project. Processing commenced in November 1994, and ceased in June 2002. Mining, including prestripping, commenced in March 1994, and ceased in May 2002. Nominal throughput was 1.5 Mtpa, at average grades of 3.80 g/t Au and 99 g/t Ag. From the start of prestripping until the end of 1996, Drill Blast sampling was the main grade control method. After several studies into the viability of Reverse Circulation, including an assessment of costs and benefits, the switch from Drill Blast to Reverse Circulation was made in late-1996. From 1997 until the end of the project Reverse Circulation was the main grade control method. The mine-to-mill call factors û the reconciliation between predicted and actual tonnes and grades delivered to the mill û for the period from commencement of processing to December 1996 were 1.069 for tonnes, 0.949 for gold, and 0.969 for silver. The mine-to-mill call factors between January 1997 and June 2002 (excluding a period of significant illegal mining) are 1.086 for tonnes, 0.977 for gold and 1.025 for silver. At face value this indicates a 2.8 per cent absolute improvement for gold, and 5.6 per cent for silver. Using average grades for the project, an additional 5112 oz of gold, and 267 173 oz of silver were delivered annually to the mill using Reverse Circulation sampling instead of Drill Blast sampling. The additional recovered metal value is estimated at $US 2.87 M annually, significantly exceeding the cost of Reverse Circulation drilling. This paper discusses a number of issues that may affect the estimated benefits.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

Application of Agitated Leaching for Iron Removal from Silica Using Sulfuric and Hydrochloric Acid In this research, iron removal from silica used in glass industry was investigated using agitated leaching method. Silica sample was provided from silica concentrate originating from Chalchoog Silica Mine located in Abhar, Iran. The sample contained silica, iron oxides and clay minerals. For characterization of samples XRD and XRF analysis and atomic absorption method were applied. Silica and iron oxide (Fe2O3) grade of head sample was 98.41 per cent and 0.067 per cent respectively. Two inorganic acids (sulfuric and hydrochloric acid) were used in agitated leaching tests. Two series of L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi design with replication were used to determine the effect of parameters including acid dosage, leaching duration, ambient temperature and solid content on iron removal. The statistical calculations and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were carried out by means of DX7.0, Minitab14.0 and Winrobust1.02 softwares and also statistical calculations were checked manually using Excel software. Also multivariate regression was applied in order to forecast Fe2O3 conent of final product. The optimum conditions for leaching tests which sulfuric acid was employed are as follows: 40 minutes leaching time, temperature of 85¦C, 40 g/L acid concentration and solid content of 20 per cent. Under this condition the amount of iron oxide in silica was decreased to 0.042 per cent. The optimum conditions for leaching tests which hydrochloric acid was employed are as follows: 80 minutes leaching time, temperature of 75¦C, 30 g/L acid concentration and solid content of 20 per cent. Under this condition the amount of iron oxide in silica was decreased to 0.035 per cent.

The carbothermic chlorination of titaniferous materials such as rutile, synthetic rutile (SR), upgraded slag and ilmenite in a fluidised bed is an established commercial process. In this work, ilmenite sourced from the Murray Basin area of South Eastern Australia was chlorinated and an assessment of the chlorination characteristics of the ilmenite, in terms of pre-treatment, type of reductant and reaction time was made. Selective chlorination of Murray Basin ilmenite to remove Fe and Mn was achieved in this work. A synthetic rutile sample containing around 93 per cent TiO2, one per cent Fe2O3 and 0.5 per cent MgO was produced at a chlorination temperature of 1000¦C with around 25 per cent loss of Ti as TiCl4. Raising the reductant to ilmenite ratio in the chlorination reactions increased the amount of Ti chlorinated. However, complete chlorination of Murray Basin ilmenite to produce FeCl3 and TiCl4, was not achieved under the conditions used in this work. Pre-oxidation of Murray Basin ilmenite before chlorination had little affect on its reactivity, compared with æas receivedÆ ilmenite. In contrast weathered West Coast ilmenite chlorinated appreciably better than West Coast primary ilmenite, in terms of bed residues remaining and amounts of elements removed. The presence of large amounts of Mg and chrome spinel grains in the Murray Basin ilmenite used in this study are likely to make it difficult to chlorinate directly in a commercial chlorinator. However, this is not to say these ilmenites will be unsuitable for chlorination applications. Further work is needed in the separation of Mg and chrome spinel grains from Murray Basin ilmenites and the products resulting from these tests could then be assessed in terms of chlorination performance, so that further processing options can be explored.

High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, suchmineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associatedquartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonlycontain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. In the past few years the Rietveld method emerged as a routine tool for quantitative phase analysis (QPA) from X-ray diffraction data. Fast and reliable results became possible by combining modern computer technology and optimised mathematical algorithms with the fundamental parameters approach in the Bruker AXS TOPAS software. Here the routine analysis of bauxite raw material and of aluminium bath electrolyte is presented. The accuracy of bauxite quantification was tested by analysing the IUCr round robin sample. An agreement of better than one per cent was obtained for minor constituents and a maximum deviation of 2.5 per cent for the major phases. This is excellent agreement with expected results from weighting. Ten different phases were quantified in natural samples from Turkey with a precision better 0.5 per cent for the major phases and one per cent for the minor phases. Additionally, crystallite sizes were obtained from the peak profiles that give valuable information for the processability of the material. XRD data from solidified aluminium electrolytes were rapidly measured using silicon strip detector technology. With the LynxEyeTM detector full patterns were collected in 90 seconds and analysed with TOPAS. It is shown how to derive well-established measures such as bath ratio and excess AlF3 from the Rietveld results. These measures are widely used in aluminium production and readily available with very high precision. The excellent agreement with ALCAN reference data demonstrates the outstanding accuracy of the method. The mean deviation between here presented results and reference data is below 0.5 per cent for total CaF2, below 0.25 per cent for excess AlF3 and 0.02 for the bath ratio. The precision of the method was evaluated by repeated measurements.

Titanium dioxide (TiG ) is produced 2 commercially by two methods generally referred to as the "sulfate" route and the "chloride" route. The SCM Corporation, in supplying 15% of the world's demand for TiO 2, uses both of these processes. Of the two processes the sulfate route is generally regarded as the older and more established technology. Worldwide the sulfate route accounts for some 70% of total Ti02 production. However, in the U.S.A. the chloride process accounts for 80% of production. The processes vary in chemistry and raw material requirements. In the "sulfate" process finely ground ilmenite or titanium slag is digested with sulfuric acid to produce a porous "cake" vrnich is extracted with water and recovered liquor. The solution is treated with scrap iron to reduce any ferric ions to the ferrous state which is then crystallised and removed as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The liquor is concentrated by evaporation and hydrolysed to form the insoluble hydroxide which is filtered and washed free of impurities. This is converted to the dioxide by calcination at 800 - 1000¦C and milled to break up any aggregates. The "chloride" process uses a higher quality feedstock of natural or synthetic rutile and/or high grade titania slag. The feedstock is mixed with ground high-purity coke and chlorinated at 950¦C in a fluidised bed. The resulting crude titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation and chemical treatment. The purified titanium tetrachloride is burned with oxygen or oxygen enriched air to give titanium dioxide and chlorine, which is recovered and recycled to chlorination. Titanium dioxide pigment from both processing routes undergoes similar finishing techniques. It is subjected to further stages of wet and dry milling, then coated with layers of inorganic oxides in order to enhance its properties for specialist applications.

Although laterite ores already provide a significant proportion of the world's nickel and cobalt production it is anticipated that they will surpass sulphide ores as a source of nickel in the next century. The most recent period of greenfield nickel project construction was during the 1970s when it was notable that all of the eight new plants were based on treating laterite ores. This was because of the relatively large selection of available high grade laterite ore deposits amenable to cheap open cast mining and a paucity of high grade sulphide ore prospect alternatives. Of the three processing options for treating laterite ores: 1. smelting for the lower horizon saprolite ore, 2. ammonia; and 3. acid leach for the upper horizon limonite ore, smelting currently accounts for about 80 per cent of nickel production. In the future, as saprolite ore grades decline because of relatively high exploitation rates, the incentive to process the large untapped reserves of limonite ore will increase. The high cobalt content of limonite ore also makes it ideally suited to processing by a hydrometallurgical rather than smelting route. With only two exceptions, all saprolite smelting operations have a Class 2 nickel end product (largely ferronickel) and do not produce a cobalt by-product. As a result of technological advances, the modified ammonia leach process for limonite and transition ore as undertaken at Yabulu, now allows the production of pure nickel metal as a Class 1 product, along with significant tonnages of cobalt by-product. The mixed Ni-Co sulphide intermediate product of the pressure acid leach processing of limonite ore at Mon is converted to Class 1 nickel and cobalt metal at Fort Saskatchewan, Canada.

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre- Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth.The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than 2 micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

The Jurassic Walloon Coal Measures crop out over much of the Moreton Basin and contain numerous thin, banded coal seams which have been mined at various locations since the 1870s. Historically most mining has been by underground methods. Increased exploration during the 1970s and 1980s has led to the delineation of significant open cut coal resources and to the development of the Oakleigh, Jeebropillly and Ebenezer open cut coal mines in the Rosewood-Walloon area. Over 2 170 million tonnes in-situ of shallow, high volatile bituminous coal with a mean maximum vitrinite reflectance of between 0.5 and 0.6 have been proven in the Basin.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

A large amount of Be2C and BeO is formed during the Cu-Be alloy production process, because beryllium is a highly reactive element. Carbide and oxide formation impairs the production yield and the quality of the Cu-Be alloy products, and therefore should be minimised. As a first step for solving these problems in the process, the following thermodynamic properties of the Cu-Be-C-O system were investigated. Based on the results, the equilibrium relations of the Cu-Be-C-O system were clarified and the operational conditions of the current Cu-Be alloy production process were also examined and discussed.

The Directional Drill Monitor (DDM) is an advanced instrument for real time in hole surveying. It was developed by Du Pont (Australia) to suit Australian gassy coal mining conditions. The instrument consists of three units: i. Down hole transmitter ii. Acoustic transducer iii. Data receiver processor unit (i.e. up hole unit). This paper describes the function of each unit in detail and highlights the importance of the DDM in long hole drilling efficiency. Surveying is carried out independent of hole depth. Each survey takes 2-3 minutes to complete, the frequency of surveying to control borehole trajectory is determined by the accuracy required for a particular hole.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

The Ellalong Colliery has been the first to mine the Greta Seam using the longwall method. Analysis of data from geotechnical monitoring has pointed to the role of the strong, massive sandstones of the Branxton formation in the development of loads on the powered supports and pillars. Failure of the sandstone intermediate-roof has been related to first-weight and periodic weighting, measured on the supports, using simple "voussior" analysis. Stress changes, including triaxial components measured in the barrier and chain pillars, have been compared with 2- and 3- dimensional numerical models. The applicable range of the models for the prediction of pillar loads under the strong roof is discussed.

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe's subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.
