In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

Under South Africanncoalmining conditions, in the majority of instances coal is won using the bord and pillar system without pillar extraction. Examples demonstrate that strata control policy has an effect on practically all aspects of mining: (1) the choice of mining method; ((2) degree of coal recovery; (3) effect on productivity; (L}.) integration of'-support techniques with other operations. This is confirmed by use of modern research results and computer simulation. Although the examples are drawn from South African experience, the conclusion is generally valid. Strata control problems cannot be solved in isolation but as an. integral part of overall mining policy.

GRD Macraes Limited, owners and operators of the Macraes and Reefton Gold Project in New Zealand, have taken up the challenge of sustainably producing in excess of 300 000 ounces per annum within five years.GRD Macraes is well on target to achieve the forecast of 170 000 oz at a cash cost of A$310/oz for the 2002 financial year, with our Reefton operation set to add about 70 000 û 80 000 ounces per annum from late 2003.At the end of 2001 GRD Macraes Limited had resources of 5.5 million oz with reserves at 2.8 million oz.

During the next five years Denmark will implement a significant reduction in the national CO2 emissions to fulfil the Kyoto Protocol. The energy sector is central for achieving this goal and extensive use of renewable energy is the most important single factor contributing to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. DenmarkÆs renewable energy sources comprise wind energy and biomass. Wood chips and straw are the dominant type of biomass in Denmark. More than 500 000 tons of wood chips are used annually, currently with rapidly growth prospects. This contribution focuses on sampling of wood chips.

I have been asked to speak today on the topic of Project Finance in the Mining Industry. Through this presentation, I hope to give you a broad outline of the concept of project finance. The first half of the presentation covers the principles involved in project finance and the second half moves to aspects more specific to the mining industry. I have worked for 3 years at Rothschild Australia. Rothschild provide finance for projects in the mining industry, world wide. We finance both large and small projects, with facilities varying from $2m to $100m.

The need to describe shape properties of solid particles arises in many applications in the mining and minerals industry. This paper presents a technique for describing the shape of 2D particle profiles from digital images, based on traversals of the circumference of the profile boundary at a succession of different scales. The traversals are undertaken in such a way as to establish a more stable set of results than usually arises from conventional fractal multi-scale shape characterisation techniques. The resulting values can be used to provide compact information on various generic shape features of the particle profile.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. ICI Australia and CSIRO have developed a novel process for extraction of zirconia from zircon sands. The two stage process involves a high temperature step and a wet chemical processing step. A pilot plant has been operating since November 1985 at CSIRO Division of Mineral Chemistry, Port Melbourne and construction of a full scale plant isplanned at Kwinana, WA.The plant has a high degree of flexibility and is capable of producing high purity zirconia up to about 99.99% and withinspecific particle size ranges. The products are being marketed by the joint company, 2-TECH Pty Ltd.

Theories on the origin of the Itabira iron formation (itabirite) in Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF), as elsewhere in the world, are restricted by the apparent lack of adjoining volcanic units, severe syndeformational metamorphism and deep weathering. Besides the three types of iron formations at QF (siliceous, dolomitic and amphibolitic; Dorr, 1969) we include a fourth type initially described as ocherous, goethitic, limonitic or even yellow iron formation. Considering its high magnetite content, it has been described as yellow magnetite itabirite (Pires, 1979). It was reported as formed by the alteration of the dolomitic itabirite (Dorr, 1969) although the anomalous Al2O3 contents are high for normal weathered itabirite. The yellowish magnetitic itabirite occurs at the bottom of the Itabira Iron formation, along the contact with the Batatal schists, and at the top units of the Itabira, within the Gandarela Formation. Within the magnetitic itabirite at the Tamanduß iron ore mine there are metric zones, concordant to the bedding of pillow-like structures, exhibiting a porous core, surrounded by an intermediate, more granular zone with numerous, minute rounded cavities grading to an external, fine-grained zone with much less minute cavities. In the external portions of some pillows a breadcrust type structure, derived by quenching with the water can be observed. In some other zones, such as the Barreiro hill, an outer, vesicular, whitish yellow, 5 - 10 mm thick, band grades to an aphanitic, isotropic band. The vesicles are slightly flattened against the band surfaces. The existence of fragmental layers showing flowage and fragment alignment, kaolinitic laminas and vesicles filled with kaolinite at Barreiro Hill and Capitpo do Mato Mine represent mesoscopic structures, indicators of a possible volcanic origin. Chemical compositions of the magnetitic itabirite from a wide area in QF revealed a relatively high Al2O3 content, consistent with a volcanic origin.

The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

Yandicoogina (Yandi) open pit mine is located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It hosts pisolitic iron-oxide mineralisation distributed within a meandering paleoriver channel. The deposit is characterised by clays occurring as lenses, accretions, desiccation joint infill and voids in the pisolite ore. The irregular shapes and highly erratic distribution of these clay pods represent a serious challenge for grade control at this mine.The current grade control approach used at the Yandi mine is based on sampling of production blastholes on a 6 m X 6 m spacing. Their good spatial coverage, tight spacing and low cost make blastholes a very convenient media for grade control and ore-waste definition. However the potential downside of this grade control approach is poor sample representivity. An alternative grade control approach is to drill and sample using reverse circulation (RC) holes distributed on a 25 m X 25 m grid. This approach has been tested in Yandi mine and compared with the blasthole sampling approach for sample representivity. The impact of increased drill spacing on mining block predictions has been studied using a conditional simulation technique. Blasthole and RC samples proved to be similarly biased, underestimating Al2O3 and SiO2 grades and overestimating Fe grades, when compared to full cone assays. These results show that using RC drilling for grade control at the Yandi open pit will not necessarily improve the representivity of the grade control samples. However, increasing the grade control spacing to 25 m X 25 m will lead to more than 12 per cent of the selective mining unit (SMU) sized blocks being misclassified. This is approximately a two-fold increase in the number of misclassified SMU blocks in comparison with 5 m X 5 m spacing.

In the iron and steel manufacturing industries, efforts are being made to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the transition from a coal-based steelmaking process to that utilising renewable energy is being pursued. An alternative process in which directly hydrogen-reduced iron is melted in an electric furnace is being investigated. It is known that foaming slag reduces heat loss from the steel bath in electric arc furnace, but iron loss due to the suspension of steel particles in the slag is indispensable. To improve the separation of steel particles from the slag, the control of the slag viscosity is important. Although the slag viscosity has been extensively studied, in those studies the slag was considered to be a simple liquid. However, in actual operations, slag is a multiphase fluid consisting of solid, gas and liquid phases. Therefore, in this study, by measuring the sedimentation velocity of titanium, stainless steel and glass spheres in an aqueous glycerin solution containing bubbles generated by the reaction between NaHCO3 and C2H2O4, the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid was evaluated based on Stoke’s law. It was found that the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid is larger than the viscosity of liquid phase and depends on both the bubble volume ratio in solution and the density of the falling solid sphere, and the apparent viscosity was different from that previously obtained by the rotation method. The apparent viscosity derived from the sedimentation velocity of solid spheres changed depending on the specific gravity of the ball. This is because the apparent viscosity is derived from the velocity of a ball falling in a static bubble in this method, whereas that is derived from the force applied by a stationary flow in the rotational method.

Naturally occurring rutile contains approximately 96 per cent titanium dioxide (Ti02), whereas the product from the ilmenite reduction - aeration upgrading process, "sub- rutile", contains only about 92 per cent Ti02. Therefore, there is an-incentive to lift the quality of sub-rutile by removing transition metal impurities, in order to supply a more valuable and marketable product, particularly for the chloride-route pigment producers. Previous studies have shown that the sub- rutile residual iron content (of approximately 4 per cent) and residual manganese content (of approximately 1.5 per cent) are chemically bound within the titanium-oxygen mineral lattice, and are most difficult to remove by simple leaching methods. In attempts to improve their eventual removal, a simple process modification has been successfully investigated in laboratory scale trials. Transition metal sulphides have been formed in the reduced ilmenite by using a "sulphur-doping" technique during reduction (metallization) conducted at controlled temperatures. These compounds give rise to greatly enhanced dissolution of the unwanted transition metal constituents during the sub- sequent aeration and acid washing steps. Thus, the manganese content of the final sulphur- doped, reduced-aerated, acid washed product can be reduced by about 90 per cent to 0.2 per cent, and the iron content by about 70 per cent to less than 1.5 per cent, in comparison with those levels remaining after unmodified pro- cessing. Additions of sulphur as low as 2 per cent of the weight of the ilmenite have proven satisfactory. Preliminary studies reveal that the modified process is economically feasible. These results suggest that the sulphur content of the Collie coal char used in an unmodified reduction step must exert some influence on the eventual removal of iron and manganese during aeration and acid washing.

The amount of discarded dry batteries are presently found to be increasing globally and waste cathode active materials of the lithium ion battery industry are among them. Hydrometallurgical operations are being applied to recover the valuable metals from these waste batteries. To find an economic and environmentally friendly process, the bioleaching process was applied in the present investigation for recovery of valuable metals. Its principle is the microbial production of sulfuric acid and simultaneous leaching of metals. Bioleaching of spent lithium ion secondary batteries, containing LiCoO2, has been studied in this investigation. A new method for recovery of cobalt, potentially the basis of an economic and environmentally friendly process was examined. The present study has been carried out using chemolithotrophic and acidophilic bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, which utilises elemental sulfur and ferrous ion as the energy source to dissolve metals from spent batteries. Bio-dissolution of cobalt was found to be faster than lithium. The effect of initial Fe(II) concentration, initial pH and solid/liquid (w/v) ratio were studied in detail. Higher Fe(II) concentration showed a decrease in dissolution due to co-precipitation of Fe(III) with the metals in the residues. Similarly, at higher initial pH values and higher solid/liquid ratio (w/v) metal dissolution was found to be inhibited. The optimised conditions for bio-dissolution were solid/liquid (w/v) ratio û 10 g/L, initial Fe(II) concentration û 3 g/L, elemental sulfur û one per cent (w/v) and initial pH û 2.5. In the optimised conditions, cobalt dissolution was observed to be about 60 per cent, whereas that of lithium was ten per cent after 20 days. A first order kinetic model was derived to study the rate of dissolution of both the metals.

Coal losses and dilution are among a coal mine operators everyday problems. These losses and unwelcome additions are generated primar- ily by the stripping operation and secondly by the coal mining opera- tion. Losses in yield due to preparation plant efficiency are a separate issue although they may be related to the coal mining operation. The losses and dilution can be traced to the following operations: (A) Overburden or Interburden Removal (1) Removal of coal edge by blasting operations. (2) Removal of top of seam by drilling/blasting. (3) Removal of top of seam by stripping equipment. (4) Removal of coal edges by stripping equipment. (5) Dilution due to stripping equipment. (B) Coal Mining (for the case where seams are ripped rather than shot) (1) Coal rib losses. (2) Coal rib dilution. (3) Coal left in floor. (4) Coal left in fault areas. (5) Floor material picked up whilst loading. (6) Spoil material picked up. (7) Spoil material from poor surface clean up. (8) Top of coal losses from final clean up. (9) Dilution from ripping too deep, i.e. into floor below seam. (10) Dilution from interseam parting. The losses apply to both the single seam and multi seam oper- ations although they are more pronounced in the multi seam mines than in a single seam mine due to the position of the coal which is lost. For example in the multi seam case the top seam coal edge loss is final. There is little chance of recovery with the subsequent pass even if the extra rehandle is done. However conversely the lower seam is relatively easy to locate as it has nowhere to go being contained by the lowwall bench.

Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

This paper traces briefly the reasoning which led to the decision to extend the existing internal shaft at the Rosebery Mine and to instal underground a larger winder (No. 2 Hoist) with capacity to handle all hoisting requirements to a depth of approximately 2,500 ft. on an incline varying from 83" to 55" to the horizontal. It then covers the specifications and selection of the winder, the design of the winch chamber, rope raise and bins, the excavation, support and lining of the chambers and the transport to site and installation of the machinery. Finally a brief description is given of the mechanical and electrical parts of the winder.INTRODUCTIONThe existing shaft winder on the internal inclined shaft situated on No. 8 Level of the Rosebery Mine had reached the limit of its capacity. Hoisting 21-ton capacity skips in balance, with a 13/16-in. diameter rope, it required four layers of rope on the 3 ft. 6 in.drums to reach the loading station under No. 12 level at a depth of 864 ft. (Fig. 1). This entailed heavy wear on the multi-layered rope and heavy stresses on the cheeks of the drums. Continuous working on three shifts was necessary to handle ore, men and materials, and a hold-up from any cause whatever meant an interruption to production on the lower levels of the mine. The maximum output of the hoist whilst hoisting from the No. 12 level loading station was 50 tons per hour. It was obvious therefore, that a larger winder was required if output was to be maintained.Diamond drilling had proved the existence of sufficient ore at depths well below No. 12 to warrant exploitation and a decision had to be reached on the means of hoisting this ore.

Gold mineralisation at the Kerimenge-Lemenge prospects is a classical example of myltiple, overprinting events, associated with intrusive-related hydrothermal systems. Repeated emplacement of high level dacitic porphyry bodies (Edie Porphyry; 2.4 - 3.8 Ma) was accompanied by a phreatomagmatic eruption which formed a diatreme-maar complex. Later hydrothermal fluids utilised permeable fault zones and diatreme contacts. Mineralisation took place during two main events. Stage I consists of early quartz - illite/sericite - carbonate phase with associated pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralisation. This phase is zoned from quartz - sericite-pyrite/arsenopyrite in the south at depth, to dominantly manganocarbonate - illitic clay - arsenopyrite- pyrite_s significant base metals in the north and at shallow levels. The majority of known gold (18.1 Mt @ 2.0 g/t Au) at Kerimenge is associated with Stage I activity. The gold occurs primary within the lattice of the sulphides and is metallurgically refractory. Fluid inclusion studies indicate early boiling and progressive cooling and dilution of hydrothermal fluids during the evolution of the Stage I event. Near paleosurface condensation of gases, which evolved off the boiling system at depth, produced abundant low pH bicarbonate fluids. During the waning phases of Stage I activity, these bicarbonate condensate fluids descended down permeable structures and formed banded manganocarbonate veins. High grade non-refractory gold mineralisation during Stage II event is restricted to favourable structures at relatively shallow levels and in the northern regions of the prospect area. Gold in this event exhibits a distinctive Au - Ag - Te -Cu geochemical signature, and is associated with hessite - tennantite - chalcopyrite mineralisation within quartz veining. Alteration and fluid inclusion studies indicate that this style of mineralisation is a result of the quenching of pulses of hot, late magmatic mineralised fluids by the cold condensate waters.
