"The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017. Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

Failings di,posal presents many challenges at metal mines in Peru where the extreme relief yields very little useable land area. These challenges are amplified by other hazards such as the high seismic environment, high rainfall, and frequent debris torrents down the steep hillsides. As a result many mining operations have resorted to in-river disposal of mill tailings. This paper presents a case history of one underground metal mine located in the high Andes mountains of Peru where in-river disposal of tailings has been used for some 30 years. The paper outlines a comprehensive engineering study that was aimed at increasing the utilisation of tailings disposal underground. The scope of this study included modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits to produce a high sulphide and low sulphide tailings for underground and surface disposal respectively: mapping and cataloguing of abandoned stopes for hackfilling: modifications to the existing backfill system to improve icliahility and throughput, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives Such as silicated and paste fills.

Teleoperation is one method by which an operator can remotely control and monitor a vehicle. The operator monitors the status and progress of the remote vehicle by watching the video transmitted from one or more cameras which are mounted on the vehicle. In the case of an LHD, it will be fitted with three cameras. For a twin-boom Jumbo, four cameras are mounted on the drill, three of which will have remote pan, tilt, 15x zoom, focus and lens cleaning controls. The advantage of teleoperation is that an operator can stand in the drive and send the remote vehicle around a corner, completely out of sight and still clearly see what is happening. This means that an LHD returns with a full bucket and a Jumbo can be operated from a safe distance. Standing in the drive teleoperating vehicles, exposes the operator to passing traffic including the remote vehicle. There are two solutions to this problem. One is to equip the operator with a Nautilus æBuddyÆ jacket which will help to protect them from all vehicles. The other is to move the operator into a safe room or area, away from the fumes, the noise and the traffic. In this comfortable, less stressful environment, the operator will be more productive and less likely to accidentally damage the vehicle. The operatorÆs æsafeÆ room does not have to be a formal control room, it can be any area which has AC or DC power available and is large enough to contain a chair and a 1.5 m x 0.75 m table. The æsafeÆ room can be on the surface or underground, it does not matter to the operation of the Nautilus Equipment. If the LHDÆs, trucks, locomotives, etc are automatically guided from origin to destination, the operator is free to operate several vehicles at a time, performing only those tasks which are too difficult for a computer to do by itself.

Tata Steel Netherlands (TSN) aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 35–40 per cent by 2030 and become CO2 neutral by 2045. A first step to reach these targets is via the utilisation of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), which will run on a mixture of high proportion of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and scrap. For an EAF operation, optimisation of slag chemistry is important to achieve the right mix of basicity (for refining especially dephosphorisation), foaming, volume (rate) and refractory life. Slag composition and rate can vary widely depending on the process variables like charge mix, charge composition, feeding rate, oxygen lancing, external carbon injection/addition, fluxing and refractory erosion/corrosion. Moreover, it is important to note that the slag composition and rate are ‘transient’ parameters and change throughout the heat. This makes all the dependent phenomena and/or outcomes transient as well. To describe all these effects simultaneously and be able to realistically simulate the EAF operations, a validated dynamic process model is important in the absence of real plant data. In this study, a validated dynamic EAF process model based on the concept of Effective Equilibrium Reaction Zone (EERZ) has been utilised to analyse the impact of high DRI industrial scale EAF operations on the transient slag characteristics – including slag volume (rate), composition, phases, solid fraction and viscosity. Simultaneously, the model is able to predict the impact on steel and offgas characteristics. Case studies were performed with 70 per cent DRI:30 per cent scrap mix considering both low and high-grade DRI. Both melting and refining aspects of the process including continuous feeding, arcing program, carbon addition, fluxing and oxy-lancing were considered.

"Dwindling commodity prices are forcing today’s mining operations to increase output. Sometimes the solution is to upgrade the existing infrastructure; however, in most cases it has to be achieved with the same or reduced workforce and with the same equipment capacity through improved process efficiency and higher uptime.Measure, Manage and Improveis the mantra for this years’ Mill Operators’ Conference and while this in most cases relates to the above process efficiency, Siemens has set its focus on the availability and uptime aspect since unscheduled downtime is one of the biggest threats to any grinding operation. Pinion misalignments, resonance, unbalance and bearing and gear meshing faults in geared trains, as well as long-term changes in the condition of the mechanical components or structures and auxiliary systems in gearless systems are the main reasons for unscheduled downtimes in today’s mill drive trains. Our paper outlines the efforts that have gone into adapting conventional condition monitoring methods in conventional, pinion driven mill drive trains as well as gearless systems to capture the gradual deterioration of wearing parts or structural changes in the drive train not only on fixed speed application but also on variable speed applications with multiple operating points. The paper further explores the use of condition monitoring systems as a tool to assess spare thermal motor capacity to potentially push equipment beyond its nameplate rating, along with the process that was followed to correlate measured frequency spectra and envelopes to ambient and load data to understand the kinematics of the drive train.Citation:Neurohr, M, Stratton, S and Roesch, T, 2016. Measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques can provide a useful tool to aid drill and blast engineers in open cut mining. By avoiding time consuming tasks such as scan-lines and rock sample collection for laboratory tests, MWD techniques can not only save time but also improve the reliability of the blast design by providing the drill and blast engineer with the information specially tailored for use. While most mines use a standard blast pattern and charge per blasthole, based on a single rock factor for the entire bench or blast region, information derived from the MWD parameters can improve the blast design by providing more accurate rock properties for each individual blasthole. From this, decisions can be made on the most appropriate type and amount of explosive charge to place in a per blasthole or to optimise the inter-hole timing detonation time of different decks and blastholes. Where real-time calculations are feasible, the system could extend the present blast design even be used to determine the placement of subsequent holes towards a more appropriate blasthole pattern design like asymmetrical blasting.

The Ebor Volcano in northeastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19-20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2-19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (-48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at -19.0-19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichment of SiO2, F,FeO/MgO, alkalies and HFSE.

The Emperor vein system lies on the eastern margin of the Tavua volcanic structure. This is of Miocene age and occurs in basalts(the Mba Volcanics) probably underlain at about 2 km by calcite-rich sediments (the Vatukoro Formation). The lodes are generally flatmakes, or steep fault fillings, or complex shatter zones, and consist of quartz and altered wall rock. In areas of open cavities it is possible to establish a paragenesis which involves five quartz stages and two ore mineral stages. The first ore stage contains calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite and native tellurium, the second petzite, hessite and native gold. The quartz stages are thought to have formed slowly (102 years) from boiling solutions of low salinity at temperatures varying with time from about 250¦C to 190¦C. The system was sealed, the temperature gradient near vertical and the mass flux small. The ore mineral stages probably formed relatively rapidly (101years) from boiling solutions at 250¦ to 200¦C when the system was mainly open. Gold deposition was probably largely a result of fall in aH2S due to boiling, the calculated solution concentration falling from a maximum of about 8 ppb at 250¦C to about 8.10-3ppb at 200¦C. Boiling is also probably responsible for an increase in a02 (by loss of H2) and fall in aTe2 (by loss of H2Te). The fluids are thought to have had a large component of meteoric water and to have been heated by plutons in the core of the volcanic structure. Stable isotope data indicate that they derived their carbon from the underlying Vatukoro Formation and their sulphur from sediments. Circulation may have been confined to the outside of the volcanic structure because of the relatively low permeability of the flows, pyroclastics and dykes within it.

Direct ship iron ore (DSO) operations at Extension Hill in Western Australia’s Midwest region have commenced, with fi rst product railed to the port of Geraldton in July 2011. Reserves are 14.8 million tonnes (Mt) of haematite-goethite ore overlying an Archaean BIF-hosted larger magnetite deposit which Mount Gibson Iron Limited (MGI) sold to other parties in 2006.Some unique geological aspects of the deposit shape DSO mining and processing operations. Owner-operator selective mining, blending, crushing and screening on site will produce three million tonnes per year (Mt/a) of Lump and Fines product to be trucked 86 km to Perenjori, railed 232 km to Geraldton, and loaded aboard Panamax-sized ships through the dedicated iron ore shiploader at the Geraldton Port Authority’s Berth 5 facility.The statutory approvals process for this project formally began in 2004, dominating delays in a predevelopment phase which extended over a longer period than the likely life of DSO operations. The lack of transparency, uncertainties and costs inherent in state government processes have influenced decisions made by MGI while assessing other development opportunities in Western Australia. Potential for additional Reserves exists at Extension Hill, however MGI’s ability to extend the mine life will hinge on statutory approval to explore for and evaluate other DSO resources on surrounding granted mining leases.The nature of the resource and use of existing infrastructure for product transport have enabled MGI to keep operating costs and capital intensity of this project relatively low. A tenacious development approach by MGI and robust project economics have fi nally enabled this site to take its place as a revenue earner beside the company’s other DSO operations at Tallering Peak and Koolan Island.

The revival of the mining industry at Captain's Flat after a long period of years of inactivity has attracted attention to the importance of the ore-deposits of that field as potential sources of supply of lead and zinc. Mindful of the necessity for taking stock of the State's mineral resources, the Department of Mines of New South Wales as part of its programme of geological investigation, carried out a survey of the oredeposits and associated country rocks during 1938 and 1940.Surface geology was mapped in detail and all available exposures were examined and logged. Unfortunately, and this condition militates against the formulation of conclusions because of insufficiem.t data, some of the older workings, notably in Keating's Section, were inaccessible and the logging of levels and stopes is by no means as complete as could be desired. However, with the progress of development and exploration, further information of geological value will come to hand for incorporation in supplementary reports. It may be expected that, under such circumstances, modification of certain statements herein expressed may be necessary but it is not anticipated that any vital alteration will be occasioned.Within the State of, New South Wales, Captain's Flat ranks second to Broken Hill as a pqtem.tial producer of lead and zinc. In addition, large quantities of iron pyrites are available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid which finds application in the superphosphate industry.The mines are now controlled by an operating company known as Lake George Mines, Ltd., incorporated in New South Wales, the parent organisation being the Lake George Mining Gorporation Ltd., registered in London.Over £600,000 has been spent by the Company in exploration, mine development, surface plant, housing and water 'conservation, while the State' Government constructed a branch railway from Bungendore at a cost of £200,000. The various activities consequent upon these development and construction programmes and the prospect of employment in the industry has led to a rapid increase in the population of the township.The State, generally, has benefited to the extent of a substantial contribution to the relief of the unemployment problem, and it is hoped that reasonable permanency will be assured to some hundreds of workers for many years.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

The SMELT-2 package is specifically designed to perform on-line simulation of smelting processes. This paper describes its application to the simulation of continuous matte converting followed by reductive slag cleaning in SIROSMELT reactors. The matte, containing 50% Cu is assumed to be produced at the rate of 20 tph in a continuous matte smelting furnace such as an Outokumpu Flash Furnace, Noranda or Sirosmelt reactor. Two alternative fluxing strategies in the converter are examined, namely: ò conventional silicate slags, ò calcium ferrite slags, and the flow sheets associated with each strategy are discussed. A regular solution model is used in the present study to account for the variations in the activity coefficients of components in the slag.

Epithermal vein and breccia hosted Au mineralisation at the Kerimenge prospect, in the Wau district, Papua New Guinea, occurs within a block of multiply fractured dacite porphyry of Pliocene age, and is localised on intersecting regional fault structures, marginal to the eroded vent of a Late Pliocene-Pleistocene maar volcano (diatreme).Au mineralisation is primarily controlled by the steeply dipping Kerimenge Fault zone, which hosts a basal zone of silicified breccias,transitional laterally and vertically to networks of fracture controlled veins.Early quartz+pyrite veins, deposited from CO2 rich, NaCl saturated, boiling fluids pre-date the main phase of Au mineralisation. Four stages of Au bearing vein mineralisation have beenrecognised. Quartz+sulphide veins (stage 1) and partially coeval quartz+sulphide+carbonate+ adularia veins (stage 2) occur marginal to silicified breccias, and are associated with quartz+sericite+pyrite wallrock alteration. Similar depositional conditions prevailed for stage 1 and stage 2 mineralisation. Mineralising fluids underwent two stage boiling at temperatures of 145 to 2300 C. Boiling resulted in the loss of approximately 3 wt.% CO to the vapour phase. 2 Fluid salinity was probably I wt.% NaCl or less.

A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project.
