The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

TATA Steel’s R&D Division at Jamshedpur has developed a slime beneficiation process to recover iron values from iron ore slime. This process recovers iron ore concentrate containing 2.2 per cent alumina from a feed containing 7–10 per cent alumina. The reject generated from beneficiation of iron ore slime is treated as waste as the iron content in the reject is below 45 per cent. Effective utilisation of this waste is required for making the iron ore slime beneficiation process a zero-waste technology. In this connection several studies were made towards utilisation of slime waste. One of these studies revealed that slime waste can be used as a soil conditioner. Slime waste contains particles of size less than 10 micron and when these particles are mixed with soil in definite proportions, the porosity and the permeability of the mixture goes down. As a result, the water holding capacity (WHC) improves. This concept was evaluated through a series of tests at greenhouse level to optimise the soil to slime ratio. Finally, a pilot scale field trial was carried out over a period of three months using paddy rice as the crop. Three separate plots with compositions of: soil + organic matter comprising Farmyard Manure (FYM), (ii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM), and (iii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM) + Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertiliser were used for the pilot trial. The results showed a 20 per cent increase in the productivity of paddy rice for plot (ii) as compared to plot (i). This was due to the beneficial effect of slime waste in the soil. The addition of inorganic fertiliser such as NPK in the ratio of (4:2:1) further enhanced the productivity of paddy rice.

For an optimal design and control of metallurgical processes, a deep understanding of the thermodynamics of the governing reactions is required. Modelling the thermochemical behaviour of those reactions is complex, as it involves multi-component and multi-phase systems. For this purpose, thermodynamic computing systems such as FactSage™ (Bale et al, 2016), which combine Gibbs energy minimisation routines with large databases of optimised thermodynamic data of solutions and compounds, have been used within the SMS group GmbH. Recently, the successful integration of those thermodynamic computing systems into the digital platforms of SMS has been achieved through ChemApp, which made running complex thermochemical calculations in Python-integrated development environments possible. ChemApp is a programmer’s package for thermochemistry and incorporates the Gibbs energy minimiser of FactSage™ as reported by Petersen and Hack (2007) as well as by Zietsman and Petersen (2018). The digital platforms link the fundamental and the industrial aspects together and can be applied as a process advisor, or for the evaluation of the environmental footprint and the economic implications of different process routes, as discussed by Reuter (2023). Two examples illustrating the progress of the developments in this regard will be introduced: 1. The Tilting Refining Furnace (TRF) for copper scrap recycling and refining to anode copper (the BlueControlApp). 2. Dephosphorisation control for the oxygen steelmaking process (Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)).

In 1944 some ten or so pieces of legislation impacted on the mining industry. Today in excess of 80 in one way or another apply to the Northern Territory miner. This paper will look at the nature of the legislation that has been introduced and the reasons for its introduction. During the Second World War the mining of resources such as iron, tin etc for the war effort set the platform for the subsequent expansion of the industry in the post-war years. Thereafter, the change in attitudes over the years that have resulted from a more conscious public and more responsible governments and developers associated with the recognition of the legal rights of others and the threat of litigation, will be traced. With a major review of the Northern Territory Mining Act currently in progress, this paper will view ANZMEC's foreshadowed preference for a National Code and the NT's intent of drawing some commonalities with other states of Australia to achieve this aim. Finally, the questions of over-regulation and whether existing legislation is complete will be addressed. From this it is foreshadowed how legislation may develop during the lead into the 21st century.

The Managalase area is remote and little visited by geologists or prospectors. Yet it holds the key to the tectonics and petrology of this part of Papua. The eastern Managalase plateau (M, Figure 1) lies between the Hydrographers andesite volcano (H) and Sesara shoshonite volcano (S) to the south of Popondetta on the Papua Peninsular. It contains over 30 small volcanic centres in an area of only 400 km2 . To the south and west lies the basic-utrabasic belt (B-UB) of the Morobe arc. This is the leading edge of oceanic plate obducted over the Owen Stanley Metamorphics during the lower Eocene time. To the east and southeast lies the Cape Vogel geosyncline where the western end of the Woodlark basin spreading centre enters mainland Papua. The extension of the spreading centre as a suture might pass as far as the southern margin of the Musa Coastal plain. A new pattern of plate tectonic motions has been determined by the global positioning system and the southern margin of the Woodlark plate has been redefined (Tregoning et al, 1998; Taylor, Goodliffe and Martinez, et al, 1999). The Managalase plateau is margined by two inferred faults. These outline a cusp protruding from the main basic-ultrabasic belt where these rocks are near the surface. The westerly arm of the cusp passes through the centres of the Hydrographers and Mount Lamington andesitic volcanoes. Mount Lamington overlies Quaternary alluvium and underlying Tertiary sediments (Arculus et al, 1983) but members of the basic-ultrabasic belt crop out on the southern flanks. The easterly arm of the cusp is an inferred shear zone (and ? fault) connecting up with the terminus of the suture on the Musa coastal plain. Movements on the two faults forming the cusp are thought to have produced the conjugate N-S, E-W faults on the plateau (Ruxton, 1966). To the east, and isolated, are the two large andesitic stratovolcanoes of Mounts Victory (V) and Trafalgar (T) which together form Cape Nelson. Mount Victory was last active in the 1890s. The Waiowa shoshonitic volcano explosion centres (W), last active in 1943 - 1944, lie near the suture adjacent to the actively rising Goropu mountains. Extension in these mountains is clearly demonstrated by the soil profiles being skeletal along a bounding fault and ageing uphill. The incision of small parallel ravines also dig deeper further upslope from the fault. To the south-east of Mount Suckling (K) the Dayman Dome is also an expanding mass. The Owen Stanley fault is parallel, and located to the south of the suture. The Mesozoic metamorphics form the backbone of the Papuan Peninsula. The intramontane Musa Trough is thought to date from the mid-Tertiary. At the eastern end of the trough Pleistocene and Recent ultrabasic breccias and alkali basalt crop out (Green, 1961).

Spray-on liners used in the mining industry for ground support and stabilisation applications are either cement based (æshotcreteÆ) or polymer based (æthin spray-on linersÆ). Some thin spray-on liners are a blend of both polymer and cement (eg Tekflex). A small number of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have been trialled in Australia as potential replacements for steel mesh in roadways and other underground mining applications; however, they were found to cure slowly and the cured coatings became brittle after an extended time in place. The University of Wollongong in collaboration with the Australian coal mining industry has shown that a viable polymer-based alternative to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications can be developed to eliminate the use and handling of steel mesh. The work to date has: established the feasibility of developing polymeric alternatives to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications; identified the physical and material constraints to be endured by any new polymeric skin reinforcement system by measuring the mechanical properties of steel mesh; identified materials that can be spray applied; and demonstrated that polymer mechanical properties can be optimised to produce similar mechanical properties (elastic modulus, yield stress, elongation-at-break, etc) to steel mesh. The identified materials will: allow the face support cycle to be fully automated, or at least remotely operated and installed; remove personnel from the immediate face area; and substantially improve underground roadway development rates.

In recent decades, significant advances have improved the modelling techniques for predicting slope failure. Predicting failures is vital in open pit mining due to the significant risk posed to personnel and equipment from unstable pit walls. Failures not only cause harm and damage to people and equipment but also cause delays to production and subsequently increase operational costs. Coupled with improvements in modelling techniques, utilisation of advanced scanning systems, such as high-definition imagery from UAVs has enabled faster and more precise mapping and modelling. However, one key element required for accurate slope stability modelling and monitoring is the ability for mine geotechnical engineers to have an accurate understanding of the mineralogy and moisture content of slopes, in real-time. To address this challenge, research has been undertaken to utilise hyperspectral imaging across a broad spectrum, combined with high-definition imagery, and LiDAR to scan slopes for minerals and moisture content. In addition to accurately mapping mineralogy and moisture, the data must be collected autonomously and remotely to ensure ongoing safety. The results show that there are many direct and indirect benefits from this new technology, including the ability to monitor slopes at a safe distance and in real-time, improved accuracy of modelling, detection of risks, and improving the automation workflow for geotechnical engineers. The paper presents recommendations for the implementation of the technology in open cut mining environments.

Process control emerged in the mid-1960s as a new and exciting method of improving the performance of mineral processing operations. The early Australian developments, principally in Broken Hill and Mount Isa, were based on pioneering work in instrumentation, the availability of small digital computers and a particularly effective partnership between companies with technological foresight and University and CSIRO research groups. Initial progress was rapid and within ten years many plants were committed to process control. Process monitoring is now routine and most circuits have some level of control. However, few plants have comprehensive optimising control systems as the difficulty of developing control strategies which can cope with the wide variety of conditions encountered in most mineral plants has been fully appreciated. This paper summarises past experience and assesses the degree of application of different forms of process control in metallurgical plants. Barriers to the effective utilisation of opt rising control are identified and some suggestions for advancing the application of control are made.

Linear interpolation of geo-related variables is important to different aspects of mining engineering such as long and short-term mine planning. The ore deposit description attained from spatial modeling of blast hole datasets has been widely taken into account, particularly, for short-term mine design and grade control, so as to define the ultimate destination of a mined block. It is approved in practice that making the wrong decision leads to losing a huge amount of money for choosing the destination of a mined block. In the case of complex ore deposits, the issue of estimation of variables in the region is questionable and somehow tedious. Due to this fact, modeling those complications in the co-spatial behavior of the grades in multi-element deposits prompts one to employ enhanced geostatistical techniques. Traditional approaches of this purpose such as polygon, inverse distance weighted and even (co)-kriging approaches, are incapable of reproducing those complexities such as non-linearity, heteroscedasticity and geological constraint that frequently exist among the variables of interest in those deposits. Another difficulty in employing those linear interpolations in grade estimation is smoothing effect, in which the estimated grades are over and under estimated. "BHP Billiton West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara with the focus on determining the lump yield (the mass percentage of >6.3 mm rocks) and the lump and fines grade for iron ore products. The geometallurgy program provides accurate information to design engineers and technical marketing teams on the performance of different iron ore mineralogies for future deposits. Additionally geometallurgy results are being used to guide short-term production planning with their introduction into short-term geology models and grade control models. The data that underpins this knowledge is from dedicated geometallurgical programs, drilled using PQ (~83 mm) holes. These holes are crushed by intervals that are based on geological definition which provides an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade. The lump is then subjected to standard dropping and tumbling test stages to produce a simulated lump and fines product. In the past, quality assurance, quality control holes were drilled using HQ (~64 mm) holes for geochemistry purposes. These holes were crushed to provide an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade and then 100 per cent is sent for assay (with no dropping and tumbling). Utilising data from HQ holes can significantly increase the indicative geometallurgical data available. This paper compares the geometallurgical results from both PQ and HQ holes from a range of bedded iron deposits (Brockman and Marra Mamba). ENGIE, the current owner and operator of the Hazelwood Open Cut coalmine, are in the process of rehabilitating the mine site in preparation for mine closure. Bucket wheel excavators (dredgers) used during coal mining operations are in the process of being demolished, which involves the controlled felling of dredger components using explosives. With the mine located in close proximity to the Morwell township and other critical public infrastructure, it is crucial that the use of explosives and the possible implications for mine stability is well understood. The felling of Large Mining Equipment (LME) will apply an impact load immediately to the underlying coal benches with the adjacent coal batters potentially at risk also of adverse slope stability impacts. This paper presents the 3D stability modelling methods employed to successfully assess the potentially adverse stability implications associated with LME collapse.

Current attitudes by exploration companies towards working on another party's exploration permit or equivalent vary widely. That this is so is due to the virtual absence, on the one hand, of anything in the mining legislation in any jurisdiction that establishes what are the exclusive rights to explore, as opposed to apply for a mining tenement, that the grant of such an authority conveys on the holder, and on the other hand, of any code of ethics or set of guidelines to proper practise. By contrast, in most states and territories, if not all, it is an offence to enter onto a mining tenement, other than to cross it, without the consent of the holder, although until recently most field personnel would have been unaware of this and most explorers would have transgressed at one time or another. A similar vacuum exists where aerial surveys are concerned. There are in fact no guidelines. It has always been assumed that a party wishing to carry out such a survey was free to do so, without even an obligation to notify the holders of any tenements or permits in the area to be surveyed, let alone make available to them any data from the survey. Concepts of 'geophysical trespass' now being tested in the US also raise the possibility that data won from adjoining ground using geophysical techniques may be privileged. Attitudes now appear to be changing. In the absence of legislation or any code of practise, what does the industry regard as ethical behaviour? Do we need to define the rights and obligations of various parties more clearly, and if so, what should they be and to what extent will it be necessary to confirm them by legislation as opposed to adopting a code of practise? Will the existence of such a code in fact improve corporate practise?

Ideal iron ore sinter is produced by optimising the balance between coarse (+2 mm), stable ore nuclei and a reactive matrix consisting largely of fluxed -1 mm fines. The authors have previously published work evaluating the matrix melting behaviour of a number of fine ores, using techniques developed by CSIRO. The focus of that work was to demonstrate the contribution of the matrix to overall sinter quality, with the results showing a direct correlation between melting point, matrix porosity and strength. CSIRO has also developed a complementary test to study the behaviour of coarse ore nucleus particles in contact with the sinter matrix and provide an evaluation of their reaction and assimilation properties. This test provides valuable fundamental information that can be used to better understand the role of specific ore types and optimise blend composition.The CSIRO laboratory-scale assimilation test is carried out by embedding particles of ores of specific sizes into a fluxed matrix of known sinter blend composition, using real ores and fluxes, in a laboratory test that directly relates to pot-grate and plant sintering conditions. Samples are fired under controlled conditions in a tube furnace using a standard heating profile and a constant, low-oxygen potential atmosphere. These conditions simulate the actual sintering process while removing the effects of the many locally-variable parameters (eg temperature, oxidation potential and localised chemistry) that exist in the actual process, meaning that trends in behaviour can be more clearly seen. Designed as a compromise between the industry-standard pot-grate sintering test and a more fundamental test using chemical reagents, the aim is to isolate and evaluate the nucleus behaviour of an individual blend component to allow an improved understanding of the role that an individual ore plays in a specific blend. Measured cross-sections of the resulting fired samples provide a semi-quantitative measure of reactivity, while accompanying photomicrographs allow a qualitative assessment of assimilation properties (eg volume and distribution of secondary porosity generated during reaction).In this paper, to complement the previous work published on melting behaviour, nucleus particles were selected from hematite, hematite-goethite and goethite ores and embedded in a simulated plant sinter matrix. Drilled core particles of two sizes were tested at fixed temperatures simulating low- (<1300°C) and high-temperature (>1300°C) sintering conditions. The resulting assimilation properties are compared and discussed as a function of particle size, temperature and ore/sinter mineralogy. The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. "Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) has an extensive history in the application of geometallurgy to the iron ore value chain. Fundamental to this has been the geological logging of material types which are assigned processing attributes such as lump per cent and density. Initially these were used for product (lump and fines) grade predictions in relation to grade blocks to be used within short-term planning horizons.More recently the predictive reach of the material types and their associated processing attributes has been extended due to their inclusion into geological block models. These predictions can now be used to influence mine plans across multiple planning horizons in such a way that the extremes of geometallurgical properties can be pre-empted and managed thus improving efficiency. Spatial material type domains are also used in the planning of metallurgical drill holes to ensure greater representivity of material than was typically obtained by chemical and/or stratigraphic criteria alone.Material type logging has also been enhanced by the introduction of modern, rapid mineralogical techniques that have complemented visual logging. This has enabled the identification and quantification of contaminant minerals and their relationships with host ore types to be established. This data is used to better manage product grade predictions and identify risks to the short-term plan.Work is ongoing in RTIO to further refine logging based predictions and in addition apply them to new areas of the business. Quartz deposits are common in nature but the presence of quartz suitable for yielding high purity quartz is exceedingly rare. This paper describes a test work study on producing high purity quartz (HPQ) product to meet the tight product specifications of greater than 99.97per cent, including four and even five nines, for uses including, lighting and fibre optics and modern-day high efficiency solar panels. Due to demand in renewable energy applications the market for high purity silica solar panels known for their increasing efficiency and durability is rapidly growing. Demand continues to rise for the use of high purity quartz in semiconductors, electronics, imaging and sensor markets. Microelectronic components are created by chemically fabricating wafers of semiconductors such as silicon to obtain the desired transport of electrical charge and control of the current. The production of silicon metal from high purity quartz has been designated a Strategic Mineral by the European Commission and by the US Department of Justice due to the growing significance of this metal in various industries. The subsequent processing of quartz is the key step to adding value and aiding technological advances. Overall, the high purity quartz market is a highly secretive, specialised market with increasing opportunities for stakeholders. The attempt to produce HPQ in this work was carried out using an Australian quartz ore following a typical HPQ process flow sheet. The unit processes included primary crushing, scrubbing, magnetic separation, flotation, acid leaching followed by hot chlorination. The results indicate that grinding of quartz requires specialist equipment due to the hardness and extreme abrasiveness of the ore leading to additional iron contamination in the ground ore. The critical impurities were aluminium, iron, sodium, potassium, lithium, titanium, zircon, calcium and magnesium. The chemical refining was found effective. The hot chlorination process needed to be done at 1200°C in a chlorine – hydrogen chloride gas atmosphere. The risk of any gas being released during this stage is very serious and only specialist companies should and can carry out this step. More recent studies reported many new options that appear to facilitate the production of HPQ with the requisite purities more easily, but costly equipment along with highly trained operators are required and hence unlikely to become available in standard metallurgical laboratories any time soon.

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens.
