Complete Bouguer and isostatic anomaly maps compiled for Costa Rica provide new insights into the crustal structure and mineralization. Terrain corrections were approximated from the station to a radial distance of 167 km by computer using a 3- minute digital elevation model of Costa Rica and surrounding areas. Isostatic corrections, based on Airy-Heiskanen compensation, were also calculated from 0 to 167 km using the 3- minute elevation model and from 167 km to 180 degrees using combined topographic and isostatic reduction maps. Costa Rica can be divided into four main terranes based on gravity data: a Pacific coastal region, a Pacific inland area, a central region, and a Caribbean coastal region. Negative gravity anomalies along the Pacific coastal margin correlate with an offshore sedimentary basin, and large positive anomalies correlate with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks on the Santa Elena, Nicoya, and Osa Peninsulas, and at Puerto Quepos. Pacific inland anomalies are separated from the Pacific coastal region by a steep gravity gradient, and over the Coast Ranges a major gravity low overlies a thick section of low- density sedimentary rocks. In the central region, a major gravity low occurs over a thick low-density Quaternary volcanic complex in the Cordillera Central, north of San Jose. A prominent feature of the Caribbean coastal region is an interrupted gravity low over the Limon Basin that reflects a thickening of low-density sedimentary rocks. A conspicuous gravity lineament, trending northeast separates northern and southern Costa Rica. The lineament is defined by the termination of several major gravity anomalies including those over the Coast Ranges, Cordillera Central, Puerto Quepos, and Limon Basin. In addition, the lineament correlates with other geological and geophysical data including: northeast-trending faults, the southern limit of large Quaternary volcanoes, the segmentation of the middle America volcanic belt, and a seismicity gap. This lineament may be the expression of a previously unrecognized major northeast- trending fracture zone in central Costa Rica. An important economic implication of the gravity lineament is a correlation with the termination of gold and porphyry copper deposits in Costa Rica.

The light microscopic study of the physical structures of coal and associated mineral matter is an important technique in providing information on the characterisitics and possible behaviour of coals in industrial processes. However the ultrafine nature of coal and mineral particles together with the limits of resolution of the light microscope restrict such studies. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)with its better resolution and higher magnifications is the means by which further information on coal properties can be obtained. An associated energy dispersive X-ray specrometry (EDS) method allows non-destructive in-situ chemical analyses to be carried out at the same time.

Conventional polygonal and block modelling techniques inadequately represent the grade-thickness distribution of some narrow shear and stratabound gold deposits. The polygonal influence of high-grade drill intercepts can result in overestimates of resource tonnages at high-grade cut-offs. Although block modelling methods provide grade smoothing and a better representation of structural continuity, the technique can lack precise definition of ore width. An alternative method known as Spatial Object Modelling (SOM) has been developed on MineMap software to overcome some of these modelling issues. This method does not rely on a uniform cell size and allows grade smoothing between resource intercepts in three-dimensional space. The SOM technique creates grade-thickness bars on regular, user-defined spacings which allow easy visual comparison of raw intercept data to the interpolated model. Model cell values are readily transformed into isopachs, isopleths and resource perimeters for reporting and mine planning purposes.

The rapid industrialisation of the world was driven by an improved ability to utilise chemical energy. Unfortunately harnessing explosive energy did not come cheaply given the hundreds of lost lives. However, the modem explosives industry has made significant technological achievements, for explosives are now considered to be both safe and extremely effective. Upon closer inspection, it would appear the key to this achievement has been the development of initiation systems. While the focus may have been originally on safety, modem developments have concentrated upon harnessing the benefits of initiation control. Before attempting to gaze into the future, it is worth reviewing some of the significant advances that have occurred.

The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

The Waft River gold deposit is hosted by low grade metasediments which have been intruded by a dacite/andesite porphyry complex. Wafi River is classified as a high sulphur, epithermal type gold deposit having: a high sulphur content, a close association with calc-alkalic igneous rocks, zoned advanced argillic and argillic alteration, and enargite group minerals. Gold occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite and pyrrhotite within intermediate dickite/kaohnite - interlayered illitic clay alteration zones. Central leached silicic, alunite and pyrophyllite zones and peripheral chloritic zones are low in gold. The gold mineralisation at Wafi is interpreted to have been predominantly caused by mixing of hot upwelling acidic magmatic mineralised fluids with cool, neutral meteoric/hydrothermal fluids within permeable sediments. Locallised high grade breccia zones are encountered within the porphyry. An initial resource in excess of I million ounces Au has been defined.

Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. I he Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company (ER&S) has oper- ated a copper smelter at Port Kembla, NSW since 1908. The feasibility of modernising the smelter was recently studied and external influences were shown to have a substantial impact on the project economics. Profita- bility is determined by the relative magnitudes of treatment charge income earned from processing raw materials and the operating costs incurred. Treatment charges are usually denominated in U.S. dollars and are deter- mined by market forces in the world copper industry. ER&S is no different from other Australian manufacturing industries in that it must maintain its competitive position by controlling costs. The modernisation project seeks to achieve this through new technology and improved labour Productivity.

Large quantities of data about production, coal quality, ground stability, ventilation monitoring, equipment performance and location, vehicle and personnel movements and geology, are generated from all parts of the mine.Internet technology and virtual reality technology are now being combined to provide an intuitive, multi-dimensional information system which can simultaneously display any information that can be collected and stored by a computer. Physical information is directly displayed as 3-dimensional objects in the mine model. Numerical and text information is dynamically linked to these objects and accessed by "clicking" on them.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. One method of forecasting prices of metals is based on analysis of historic relationships between prices, inventories and consumption. The first, but generally overlooked step in this analysis should be to remove from the inventory and consumption figures the effects of seasonal variations. The next step is to construct diagrams which show prices plotted against ratios of inventories to consumption. These diagrams indicate that, when inventories are high, prices show little response to changes in inventories. Below a critical level of inventories, however, the psychology of the market changes and small changes in inventories lead to large moves in prices. The critical level of inventories is termed the "pinch-point"; the diagram which shows prices in relation to ratios of inventories and consumption may be called a "pinch-point diagram".

The effect of accurate detonator delay timing on blast results can now be studied with the development of the ICI Electronic Detonator. This detonator has an accuracy and precision orders of magnitude greater than the current range of pyrotechnic delay detonators. A series of field trials have been conducted to quantify the effect of delay accuracy and timing on blast performance. These trials have demon- strated that delay timing can have a marked influence on blast fragmen- tation, muckpile displacement, blast vibration and airblast.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

A block model of the orebody is used to plan a mine. The first requirement is to identify ore to be extracted, discarding waste, so as to meet target grade, generally in multiple analytes. Commonly, cut-off values are set for each analyte, so as to distinguish ore from waste. It will be shown that, if more than one analyte is important, this procedure is wasteful of ore and a composite cut-off function is preferable.A second requirement is to sequence the ore extraction so that the variability in ore grade is controlled: failure to do so will result either in low-quality ore being marketed, or excessive re-handling being required to blend the ore to reduce the grade variability.A third requirement is that the extraction sequence should be such as to control the amount of equipment movement required, enhancing the equipment productivity.The overall objective, to optimise the Net Present Value (NPV) of the mined ore, is simply stated but complex in realisation, since so many factors, such as target grade, grade variability, equipment choice, equipment movement, and downstream blending all have alternatives which can be traded off against each other, and all of which contribute to the costs and benefits making up the total NPV.There exist commercial packages for ore selection and mine planning. However, they are often of a ‘black box’ nature, and users are sometimes not fully aware of the criteria being applied. In particular, the treatment of quality as a multidimensional vector may be problematic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues involved and to suggest an alternative set of approaches, which should complement existing commercial treatments.The discussion will be illustrated specifically by reference to the mining of iron ore, but the issues are relevant to a wide variety of mining situations

The high cost of sampling systems is largely due to the fact that indiv- idual mechanical type sampling units must be installed at the discharge end of ore/pulp pipelines, that is, at points where the pipeline discharges into pump sumps or the like. A considerable economic advantage may be obtained in the use of a samp- ling device that can be installed at any point in the path of the trans- porting pipe line. Initial tests on a vertical line with an injection sampler using iron ore concentrates reveal the validity of this type sample versus that taken with a mechanical sampler. A descrip- tion of the injection sampler shows its simplicity of installation, requir- ing minimum downtime on existing lines.

It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone, its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend.
