Mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems in road tunnels are constrained by the traffic envelope and the construction profile. Whilst these spatial constraints are often ælocked inÆ early in the design process, the detailed M&E design continues for some considerable time after key civil engineering issues have been resolved. Ventilation design criteria for both normal and emergency operation often involves considerable negotiation with a wide range of stakeholders. Final system performance and spatial requirements are only finally resolved when suppliers are selected following the tender process. Lighting design is dependent upon a wide range of factors including tunnel lining materials and associated colours as well as agreed maintenance regimes. Cabling systems can only be developed when the general arrangement for power distribution is agreed and a system of substation, switchrooms and equipment rooms is in place. Many other systems such as fire protection and communications facilities fill the available space beyond the traffic envelope, where physical, structural and æsight lineÆ requirements must all be accommodated. The more co-ordinated civil engineering and M&E design is and the earlier the process starts the better the outcomes for all parties.

Stream diversions are a common feature of mine sites worldwide. From an operational perspective, a fundamental requirement of a stream diversion is that it should convey water flows between two points in a safe, controlled and predictable manner. On the other hand, rivers and waterways are naturally dynamic systems, and many of their natural values are achieved through their ability to alter their forms and processes over time in response to flow events - often in a potentially unsafe, uncontrolled and unpredictable manner. In order to ensure that diverted river reaches achieve the dual objectives of short-term operational stability and longer term physical equilibrium with surrounding landscapes, alteration of form and process must somehow be understood and incorporated into the design process. However, performance targets for waterways are not always easy to define and assessing what is good and bad in such variable systems can be difficult. This paper discusses the role of the stream diversion from the operational, environmental and regulatory/relinquishment perspectives, and how stream diversions must achieve physical stability in the short-term, but dynamic equilibrium in the long-term.CITATION:Markham, A, 2012. A simple production technique has been initiated and implemented at Oaky Creek open cut coal mine to optimise recovery of coal from the relatively thin geological seams. The production technique is based upon minimising coal dilution through careful dragline operation and the selective use of mine mobile equipment to clean the top of coal. In addition, recovery of coal from the pits has been increased by refining blasting and dragline methods.The implementation of the recovery optimisation programme at Oaky Creek has provided significant economic benefits from increased yield through the preparation plant by the reduction in dilution, and from increased raw coal tonnage through improved pit recovery methods.

Soil air samples taken from the top one metre of the soil profile, were measured for C02 and 02 using portable field analysers at a number of sites of known sulphide mineralisation in South Australia. New perceptions of the nature of volcanic hazards on Bougainville Island have resulted from a recent remapping of the geology of the island. Ignimbrites and calderas have been identified at six Quaternary centres (Emperor Range, Tore, Kunua, Billy Mitchell, Loloru, and Laluai), and large-scale explosive activity now must be identified as a significant volcanic hazard on the island. Billy Mitchell and Loloru volcanoes are identified as the most likely sites of future, major, explosive activity. Billy Mitchell was recognised formerly as an extinct volcano, but is now known to have produced major eruptions 370 and 918 years BP. Five ignimbrite units recognised at Loloru range in age from about 12 700 to 3200 years BP. Bagana is an active volcano in central Bougainville, but its explosive activity is relatively minor and does not significantly affect areas beyond the uninhabited area of the volcano itself. Balbi is the largest volcano on Bougainville and has an extensive geothermal area at its summit. It was thought to have been in eruption last in the early nineteenth century. However, 370 and 940 year BP plinian ashfalls from Billy Mitchell cover the central area of Balbi, so the latest significant activity from Balbi may have been at least 1000 years ago.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. The validity of the equation is discussed in general terms in the context of slope stability problems commonly encountered in Western Australian open pit gold mines.

Particular emphasis is placed on aspects of in-situ testing, including large diameter plate bearing tests. Backfill systems using unconventional cementitious binders have been successfully used in relatively deep and hard rock tabular mines for longwall, scattered stoping and shaft pillar removals. Two unconventional cementitious systems are discussed: A ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) with an activator containing lime. This has been used with a total tailings æstableÆ slurry at a relatively low dosage of less than seven per cent, by mass, based on dry solids. The room and pillar stopes supported with this fill were up to 20 m high and the tailings were relatively high in pyrite. A GGBS binder plus a silicate based activator and gelling agent that virtually eliminated all water drainage (and hence post filling shrinkage). The system used a slurry, but the addition of the activator created a final placed product that had the behaviour of a paste. The system has been successfully used for almost ten years in the following applications: stoping widths (mining heights) above 1.6 m; and shaft pillar removals in seismically active areas at the end of the life of the shafts. This paper discusses the technical merits and costs of the systems and compares them to other fill systems (including true paste systems). the acceleration (normally g, 9.81m/sec2) is increased to a significantly larger (but generally unmeasured and unknown) value, as shown in Figure 1.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

A database of over 1300 earthquakes has been used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and tectonics in two areas of eastern Queensland and NE New South Wales. These areas have been monitored by several networks that were installed primarily to monitor seismicity associated with the impounding of large reservoirs. Events that occurred prior to the installation of these networks have been excluded from the analysis because they have large uncertainties in location.Seismicity in SE Queensland and NE New South Wales is concentrated in the coastal regions. Activity also extends off the coast of Queensland and beyond the continental shelf. The coastal activity is mainly within the New England Fold Belt. An area of the fold belt overlain by the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also active. There is an area of activity near St. George that correlates to the Wunger Ridge. Fraser Island and the adjacent onshore area, near Maryborough, are notably aseismic.Within the New England Fold Belt there is a NNW trending zone of concentrated activity that includes the South D'Aguilar Block and the Esk Trough as far as Gayndah. The Nambour Basin, the Gympie Province, and the southern portion of the Yarrol Block are significantly less active.Composite focal mechanisms of several groups of accurately located earthquakes in SE Queensland indicate predominantly reverse faulting. This faulting is the result of the crust being compressed horizontally in a NE-SW direction.Activity in the Burdekin Falls Dam area of central eastern Queensland is confined to the Drummond and Bowen Basins. There is also significant activity offshore from Townsville and Bowen.

The situation in which a gas stream flows through a bed of solids is found in many extractive metallurgy operations. Examples include blast furnace smelting, sintering and pellet firing. In such cases the resistance of the bed to fluid flow and heat transfer is of major significance to the operation of the process. This depends on the structure of the bed, which in turn is influenced by the manner in which the materials are charged to the bed. In this work, packed beds of hematite pellets of two different sizes were prepared in which the pellets were charged as a uniform mixture and in layers. The porosity, flow resistance and heat front velocity were measured and compared for the different bed configurations. For layered beds, the overall porosity and heat front velocity increased while the flow resistance decreased when compared with the values obtained for the uniform mixture. The size of the layers also had an effect on flow Properties.

Kambalda Nickel Mines (KNM) currently have eight operating underground mines, three on care and maintenance and other orebodies at various stages of development. Each operation differs greatly in scale, ore grade, milling characteristics and cost structure. The optimum number of mines operating at any one time and their level of production, within the constraints of mill blending requirements and overall mill capacity, is the key to maximising profit in a climate of fluctuating nickel price. Cost models are developed for each mining operation which relate ore tonnes mined to total cost per pound of nickel produced from that mine. Aggregating the mine cost models provides a composite cost model for the entire operation. The cost models provide the operating levels necessary for each of the mines and hence Kambalda as a whole, to operate at the lowest cost per pound of nickel produced. However, lowest operating cost does not necessarily lead to maximum profit. The level of nickel price above operating cost can dictate maximum profit positions which are contrary to the lowest cost position. In addition, the decision to temporarily shutdown mines or reopen mines in response to nickel price movements comes at a cost. In considering the optimum operating position, the price of production capacity flexibility needs to be taken into account. This paper describes the process used to assess all these factors in arriving at the optimum operating position for Kambalda Nickel Mines for varying nickel prices. The same methodology can be used by corporate management in managing multiple mine sites as well as mine management managing multiple orebodies or stoping blocks for maximum profit.

The mining industry often needs to operate in remote or climatically harsh locations. The industry has recently been forced to deal with extreme conditions including floods, heatwaves and droughts. As these are becoming progressively frequent occurrences, mines typically build ‘downtime’ into production schedules and expect to incur costs to manage the various risks arising from climate extremes. Importantly, many environmental conditions are becoming more extreme and consequently, risk management based on past data can become increasingly ineffective. Market and shareholder demand for fewer interruptions are another pressure on mines to avoid prolonged or frequent downtime. Hence, adaptation to climate is becoming an important strategic move for many companies, many of whom are using future climate scenarios and alternative risk evaluations.We present here a method that uses commonly available mine site data to assist decision-making for reducing vulnerability to sudden flood. The method, ‘climate-related adaptation from terrain evaluation results’ (CRATER), identifies a mine’s flood ‘hot-spots’ and presents them as a ‘traffic lights’ warning map. The process then requires a failure analysis process such as fault-tree analysis to identify both the cause of possible failures and a range of possible failure-avoidance adaptations. In the final stage, management can assess the most suitable option for the mine, based on the availability of capital such as time, facilities, labour and money in addition to social acceptability of the options. CRATER has been tested in an open cut mine environment and is now being further developed to identify how subsidence over underground mines may impact on flooding and ponding over the mining life cycle (CRATER II). The Morning Star mine is owned by Hill 50 Gold NL. Gold is hosted in quartz-carbonate ¦stibnite ¦molybdenite veins that occur in a series of deformed, altered and metamorphosed mafic volcanics with subordinate sediments and felsic intrusive rocks. The irregular gold distribution and its relationship to structure and alteration intensity makes the definition of stoping limits difficult. Understanding the structural evolution of the orebodies and the contemporaneous and later structures that affect the orebodies has been very useful in this context. This paper reports on a detailed mapping exercise (as part of a more extensive and on-going investigation) and the integration of this mapping with other geological and grade control data in a 3D modelling environment to provide an expanded basis for stope design. Three types of mineralised zones can be discriminated based on the morphology of the veins within. They are:those associated with strongly folded, thick veins (approximately 1 m thick eg 05 orebody); those comprising planar, boudinaged and some folded veins which consolidate to form tabular, steeply dipping bodies (eg 010 orebody); and zones containing the above vein types and thin, highly deformed veins within zones of intensely foliated country rock that result in localised, irregularly distributed high-grade gold zones (eg 02 orebody). The mineralised zones associated with thick folded veins are typically predictable over many tens of vertical metres. The second and third types of ore zone is generally less predictable. Detailed mapping and structural kinematic studies indicate all ore zone types are affected by progressive deformation involving strong strain partitioning. It is interpreted that high strain zones, recognisable by intense foliation development and highly deformed veins, are the latest stage of a progressive deformation which approximates bulk flattening. Structural controls on mineralisation can be defined at two different scales.Regional scale folding has deformed a sequence of mafic volcanics with interlayered sediments and felsic intrusives. Initial geometry of felsic bodies relative to orientation of the primary lithological layering and the bulk shortening direction is interpreted to be critical for initiation and development of strongly dilatant zones within this package of rocks, and Local scale dilation is evidenced by development of several vein sets whose range in orientations and opposed vergence relationships suggest a pre-folding origin comprising both extensional and hybrid shear-extensional types. Continued deformation resulted in folding of these veins with strong strain partitioning. Major vein packages are closely spatially associated with the felsic/mafic contact and an interpreted early structure which appears to have partitioned early dilation. This structure is now obscured by strong deformation but is currently represented by a zone of planar veins.

In the development of novel sulfide collectors, especially for the low-lime and acid circuits, flotation of chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covellite and pyrite was studied with both new and commercially available S- containing collectors. The natural float- ability of sulfides, water quality, and redox potentials - all of which were considered im- portant in assessing collector strength and selectivity - were also investigated. Chalcopyrite exhibited the highest natural floatability. The response to most collectors, however, was chalcocite > covellite > chalcopyrite > pyrite. Water quality had a very significant effect on both natural and collector-aided floatability. De- ionized water and tap water had a flotation suppression effect compared with doubly- distilled water. Flotation results with single minerals are correlated with those for copper and pyrite from natural ores. Several novel collectors have now been developed for sulfide flotation in acid, neutral or mildly alkaline circuits. The results for four of these collectors, which have shown promise in commercial applications, are discussed in this paper.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.

Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

Revised throughput rates, as a result of current mining methods and tight controls on mine dilution, have dictated a change in metallurgical philosophy at Renison Limited. Emphasis on throughput capacity increases has altered to a reduction in circuit complexity and operating costs. Extensive surveys of the gravity and cassiterite flotation circuits led to several plant modifications between August 1989 and March 1990. The coarse and fine gravity retreatment roughing tables were by-passed, the coarse gravity retreatment roughing tables were re-commissioned, the cassiterite flotation rougher capacity expanded and the gravity regrind cyclones re-configured.
