This paper describes the test re- sults which give a complete proccess of failure of concrete lining embedded in sand medium under load, including the order of appearance of crack along the lining up to failure. nor each crack appearance corresponding calculation being made to assess the redistribution of moment and thrust force in critical section including crown section, section making 45¦ with the vertical etc. De- flection at the above stated critical sections are also measured at each stage of loading. The pressure along the top hori- zontal surface of embedded lining and the vertical sides are measured by pres -sure gauges embedded in sand medium. fhe test results show a complete figure of rupture characteristics of concrete lining embedded in soft ground which approximates alluvial deposite often occur in metro construction at cities near the river side. These test results have been taken as a reference in assessing the action behavior of concrete lining in certain cities in China.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. Paul Gillespie (B.M.R.). and John Haigh (formerly B.M.R., now Senior Geophysicist, McPhar Geophysics Australia.) The article is presented with permission from the Director, B.M.R.

This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

It is a privilege for me to participate in this vitally important discussion of The Role of Governments in the Management of Resources. The distinction of my fellow participants is evidence that this event is a matter of extreme importance and attracts international attention. In the management of natural resources, government and private enterprise share awesome responsibilities for the economic well-being of nations. Mining and its relation to the prosperity of nations is almost as old as recorded history. Copper was being mined and extractive metal- lurgy practised at Timna in Israel's southern desert as far back as 4000 B.C., and the rich mines of Laurium not only saved the Greeks from Persian domination 2500 years ago, but also provided Athens with a monopoly of silver in the Mediterranean world. This bolstered the economic power of Athens and led to the golden age of Greek commerce and culture.

Degussa's PAL-system (peroxide assisted leach) has been proven to be more economical than the conventional cyanidation technique. Significant in- creases in the gold recovery have been reported, accompanied by savings in cyanide. Accelerated extraction kinetics and modified reagent demands necessitate a redesign of the conventional cyanidation plant. The South African Osprey Mine is presented as an example of a successful PAL-application. Based on the plant and laboratory data it is shown that the redesign of the flowsheet can be an important factor for the effectiveness of a metallurgical plant. In the case of the Osprey Mine, the PAL-technology all ows a modification of the current preoxidation-ClPcircuit to two separate CIL-plants to treat run-of-mine ore and old tailings dumps. A doubling of the throughput is possible without enlargement of the plant. This innovation in the field of gold extraction, the combination of the PAL-process with a redesign of the metallurgical plant, can be considered as a basis for a more profitable gold mine.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

The Maragorik prospect is an example of high sulphidation, Cu/Au mineralisation occurring at a high level in the hydrothermal system. As extensive ash deposits blanket the region, controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT), in conjunct-ion with bulldozer trenching, have been used to delineate subsurface geology. Fluid upflow has occurred along EW structures dilated by rotation on the bounding major NW lineaments. Rising hydrothermal fluids have exploited permeable horizons in contact with the upflow structures. This lithological control is evident as ledges of silicification and peripheral clay alteration, at high levels in the system. As is typical of high sulphidation systems, a two phase fluid consists of an initial rapidly moving vapour-dominated phase, followed by a liquid-dominated phase. Much of the zoned and overprinted silica to clay alteration is developed from the vapour-dominated fluid. Mineral deposition occurs as a result of brecciation of the competent silic-ification by liquid phase fluids. Such mineralisation is of restricted volume in ledges proximal to the feeder structures.The style of alteration and mineralisation are indicative of a very low temperature and hence a high level system. Thus, although high sulphid-ation systems are inferred to develop from porphyry-related magmatic fluids, such a source at Maragorik is interpreted to be very deeply buried.

In the expansion program of the iron ore pelletizing plant at Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel Ltd., an automatic computer control of products fineness on grinding department is practised. The main problem of the process control of a grinding system is scattering of measured fineness values of products. The scattering comes from the inherent nature of grinding systems, sampled powders and measuring systems. A method is developed to presume the exact status of the plant from scattering products (fineness values and to achieve a stable con trollability of the plant by utilizing the computer. An on-line fineness analyzer, an automatic sampling device and vari-speed air separators are also developed to compose the automatic grinding plant. This report introduces the fundamental epts and results of the automatic fineness rol system of the grinding plant.

After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical,analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first,uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated,taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next,the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.

Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

This paper documents the development of a user-friendly computational program, which has been constructed to assist the mine ventilation engineer in the optimal design and operation of methane drainage ranges. In the past, many computer tools for ventilation engineers led to the development of `research systems'. These computer systems, although developed with the needs of the industry in mind were due to a combination of inexperienced programming methods and the availability of suitable user interface software not easily accessible to the practising engineer. Recent developments in computer hardware and software (particularly windows based graphical user interfaces) mean that engineers no longer need to dedicate large amounts of valuable time to become familiar with often complex items of software. The authors of this paper intend to demonstrate a practical system which successfully integrates complex mathematical models, an easy to use interface and knowledge based techniques. The graphical interface guides the user to draw on the screen a mimic diagram representation of the methane drainage network. The user is prompted, during the construction of the drawing, to input the information and data required by the calculation and knowledge based procedures. The computer program then calculates all of the flows, purities and pressures throughout the network. Given reliable measured data from an existing range a comparative analysis can be performed between the predicted and measured network flow data. A knowledge-based system may utilise this analysis to either update the operational status of the network or suggest either a reasoned maintenance or remedial strategy to improve the performance of the drainage system. The development of the OMEN project has been carried out at the request of the Midlands Group, British Coal Corporation, Edwinstowe. The system is about to be field tested at a number of mines. It is hoped that when this paper is presented that the system will be used at both Group and mine level.

THIS paper deals with the handling of the various materials used in the 100-ton zinc plant at Risdon, and, in view of the magnitude of the works, the configuration of the ground covered by these works, the variety of the rnaterials used, and the large quantities, a very attractive and interesting subject is opened.The works are situated on the right bank of the River Derwent, about four miles above Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. The Risdon works cover a space of 149 acres, the area being :3800 yards long by 2800 yards wide, and the elevations vary from 6 ft. above high-water mark at the wharf and foreshore to 163 ft. above high-water mark at the power station, these being the limiting points as regards elevation which are considered in this paper. Throughout the paper elevations are given in feet above high-water mark. Fig. 1 shows a general view of the works taken from the opposite bank of the River Derwent. The wharf is clearly shown, with SS Kekerangu loading residue; behind the wharf is seen the inclined conveyor leading to the cakine bin; further up the hill is the leaching division. No. 1 haulage runs to the left of this up to a point on the left of the power station, the large reinforced concrete building at the top of the hill. Below this is the cell room, the largest building on the plant. The roasting division, not very clearly seen, lies at the foot of the main stack, and the casting division lies to the left of this, between the leaching division and the cell room. A large wharf has been construl'ted alongside the works. This wharf is 880 ft. long and 60 ft. wide. It is capable of berthing large overseas steamers, as at low tide there is a depth of :30 ft. of water. During the last few years the quality requirements on roads and railroads have become more accentuated due to the desire to minimise maintenance costs. This has, in turn, led to increasing requirements in the preparation of ballast materials and pavement aggregates. As the access to natural gravel in northern Europe is decreasing (due to lack of availability or by law restrictions) the use of crushed rock material is becoming more and more important. The aim of this paper is to derive and describe a universal method for the prediction of particle size distributions from compressing crusher machines such as jaw- and cone-crushers. Based on a closely defined physical model, expressions which define the size reduction process are derived. Conditions for simplifying assumptions are clearly outlined. The choice and mix of breakage functions is a central subtopic iò the analysis of the crusher machine processes. Known breakage functions are reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for determination of a true breakage operator which is related to physical properties of the crusher device and the size distribution of the feed material is introduced. Finally experimental tests are compared to numerical calculations. The method described in the paper can be a useful tool when designing crushing plants or when optimizing the output of compressing crusher Machines.

In situ coal gasification is a method of extracting a high proportion of the energy value from coal without the need for mining. In situ conversion of coal to combustible gases is achieved by drilling wells into the seam, injecting gasification agents and initiating combustion. The product gases are then extracted to surface using production wells. These gases are clean energy sources for power generation, heating or synthetic fuel production. In situ coal gasification is of particular interest with respect to its lower environmental impact, potential application to otherwise inaccessible energy resources (ie offshore, deep deposits or beneath protected lands) and low capital intensity. Practical application of this clean technology is restricted primarily by lack of satisfactory quantitative descriptions of the processes involved, in particular the hydromechanical processes.In this study, three characteristic physical zones of an in situ gasifier are identified as the rubble zone, combustion front and virgin coal zone. Coupled mechanical processes of coal consumption and overburden collapse are used to describe the permeability profile in the rubble zone. Additionally, the redistribution of overburden load associated with coal consumption is accounted for with the formulation of a stress (compressive) dependent permeability profile, which is applied to the virgin coal zone. The model was implemented into and solved by FEMLAB, an advanced computer simulation tool. The flow process, according to DarcyÆs Law, is subsequently described in terms of permeability dependent injectivity. Injectivity is an indicator of flow velocity, which has been identified as a crucial factor in determining the commercial value of product gases from in situ coal gasification. The stress alteration to coal permeability was found to have a dominating influence on the flow process. This finding implies that a greater understanding of the in situ coal burning induced deformation of surrounding rocks would be of significant value in assessing the economic viability of applying this clean technology to potential sites.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

In the last 40 years nuclear energy has taken its place as a major source of electricity worldwide. It now produces 17 per cent of the world's electricity and could conceivably produce a higher proportion, to displace some six billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Concerns about global warming and environmental quality now underline the virtues of nuclear electricity among alternative sources of energy. Global electricity demand is rapidly increasing as a proportion of total energy usage. The proportion has doubled since 1960 and the demand is expected to increase at least 75 per cent between now and 2020. The source of this extra capacity, and the replacement of present capacity, raise questions with major resource and environmental implications. Today nuclear energy is a mature technology. Over 1200 nuclear reactors have been built and operated, some of these have been decommissioned, and among the 440 reactors in commercial operation the first advanced reactors are now entering service. Some 8000 reactor-years of operation have, with the sole exception of Chernobyl, shown nuclear energy to be extremely safe and reliable. High-level wastes are being managed properly and in different parts of the world two strategies are applied to this. Australia has a major role as a long-term supplier of uranium, since it holds almost 30 per cent of the world's reserves. This, along with an impending sellers' market for uranium, is making it an opportune time to develop new mines here. However, after several decades of concern about civil nuclear energy contributing to the arms race, we now have uranium liberated from nuclear weapons stockpiles being diluted for use in civil reactors, which will supplement ex-mine supply. The public acceptability of nuclear energy remains the critical factor in its future and hence in ours.
