Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread Uwleiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17-16 Ma. The north- to north- northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1,100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcano- tectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma.

The hydrocyclone parameter d5Oc is estimated by the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Results indicate that ANN performs equally well as compared to statically derived analytical formulae. Results also show that ANN will also be convenient in the on-line control of hydrocyclones.

There is no other effective way for study ing firedamp and coaldust explosions than to produce controlled explosions in a pre-monitor- ed environment - either mine openings kept for the purpose, or special surface galleries. Such explosion testing facilities have been employed historically at Buxton in U.K., with lesser known installations at Bruceton, U.S.A., Tremonia, West Germany, Katowice-Mikolow, Poland and elsewhere. Both firedamp and coal dust explosions are studied. Normally coal dust explosions are initiated by somewhat standardised methane air mixtures, by explosives, or purely by coal dust. Various structures and suppression installations are installed in roadways and galleries prior to explosion to simulate destruction and suppression, and the results of such tests form the basis of suppression installations, especially stone dust barriers and water barriers. Other data collected from these experiments include rev- ersals of explosion waves, pressures and temperatures and duration of explosion waves, analyses of aftergases etc. Other uses of explosion testing galleries include testing of explosives, electrical equipment and frictional . sparking.

With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

In a high pressure rolls crusher two force components: the pressurising thrust and the rolling force can be measured experimentally. Computer analyses have revealed regular patterns of stress distribution in the confined material between the rollers. Based on the computer analyses and experimental results a one-dimensional comminution model has been developed.

This paper describes the use of a wavefront reinforcement model which has been developed to supplement established charge mass scaling methods. The model allows for the time taken for blast vibration wavefronts to travel from each blasthole, and has been successfully used to explain the reason for directional increases in both air and ground vibration in certain situations. The model has been used to identify wavefront reinforcement due to the propagation of air vibration and ground vibrations in certain situations. The paper includes a throw (or cast) blasting case history which provides multi-station evidence of the strong directional nature of wavefront reinforcement.

In an on-going study of the chemistry of base metal sulphide flotation, the effect of the inclusion of cyanide in the reagents suite has been studied, with special reference to ore from Pasminco Mining's Elura mine. Cyanide has been variously described as an iron sulphide depressant, a preventor of sphalerite activation and as an activator of galena. In the case described here, the cyanide appeared to act as an enhancer of the galena flotation performance, raising the lead recoveries by 25 per cent but leaving the sphalerite and pyrite responses unaffected. The lead rougher flotation performance with and without cyanide was investigated over a wide range of redox potentials (0 mV to 400 mV SHE). In all cases, the inclusion of the cyanide brought about an increase in the galena recovery and was responsible for a faster rate of galena flotation during the initial stages of the beneficiation. A surface characterisation study (XPS) of the lead flotation stage, with and without cyanide, indicated that the reagent interacted specifically with the galena and pyrite minerals. It was possible to correlate the surface absorption of the cyanide on the lead and iron sulphides with improvements to the flotation performance using the combination of surface spectroscopy and laboratory flotation Testwork.

The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.

This paper details successful implementation of a revolutionary pit access system involving excavation of an 'in-the-wall' ramp at Three Mile Hill open pit operated by Gold Mines of Coolgardie, formerly Goldfan Limited, at Coolgardie, Western Australia. Three Mile Hill is a medium-size, open pit, gold operation typified by hard, competent, fresh rock conditions from near surface. The project involved construction of a haulage tunnel or decline access located in the wall of an open pit in place of a conventional pit access ramp. Works undertaken as discussed herein included excavation, support, ventilation, dewatering, services installation, commissioning and monitoring. Prior to implementation, the conventional hardrock pit slopes and designs were constrained by the presence of infrastructure and a main road to the North and by adjoining leases to the Southeast. The combination of these factors and economic considerations resulted in a decision to proceed with an innovative in-the-wall ramp access system that is believed to be the first of its type in Australia. Back-analysis indicates that implementation resulted in a cost saving of as much as A$3.6 million and increased mineable pit reserves. The paper deals with the successful implementation and operation of the in-the-wall ramp haulage as well as an economic evaluation that is aimed at drawing some general conclusions on favourable conditions for implementation in other mining scenarios.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. Gunpowder Copper Limited processes 1,000 tonne/day of Mammoth ore in a conventional flot- ation concentrator. Run of mine ore is prepared for flotation by three stages of crushing and two stages of ball milling. The concentrate, in which the primary copper mineral is chalcocite, is solar dried and exported to Japan. The history of operation is summarised, and plant practice and metallurgical problems are discussed.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by June 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised longwall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

Opencast Lignite Mining requires topwall strata of seams to be fully depleted and footwall aquifers sufficiently depressurized. To prevent a spread of the cone of depression into protected wetlands some distance away, alternatives had been investigated such as closing water works, underground slurry wall barriers and recharge by infiltration. As a result of these investigations, the infiltration method has been chosen and in a first phase during the next decade it will utilize as much as 55 x 106 m3/year. Using this approach, the survival of the wet lands is assured.

MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

Over the years there have been occasional references in the literature to the activating effect of cyanide in galena flotation with xanthates. These have usually been associated with the processing of lead-zinc or copper-lead-zinc ores. Bubble contact curves for the pure galena-xanthate system show a flotation edge at pH 10.4 independent of sodium cyanide concentration which was thought due to hydroxyl ion, not cyanide ion.Flotation tests were conducted on samples of Mount Isa lead-zinc ore using varying concentrations of sodium ethyl xanthate and sodium cyanide. At low collector concentrations, galena recovery kinetics improved with sodium cyanide addition, and the higher the cyanide concentration, the higher the galena recovery rate. At higher collector concentrations, galena recovery rate was independent of sodium cyanide addition.For a given collector addition, the lead grade-recovery curve shifted to an improved position with increasing sodium cyanide level. For the same recovery there was an increase in the lead grade with increased sodium cyanide addition, and this increase was most dramatic at high sodium cyanide concentrations.The presence of sodium cyanide during the grinding of Mount Isa ore caused surface passivation of the iron sulphides and possibly the sphalerite.These sulphides, therefore, reacted with less of the oxygen present in the pulp, hence more oxygen was directed to the surface of the galena. This resulted in an enhancement in the total amount of xanthate adsorbed on the galena that is reflected in the improved flotation response of that mineral.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

This paper discusses the potential role of underground space and tunnelling in urban planning in Australia. The paper gives examples of the infrastructure and commercial applications of underground space which have been effectively used overseas but have been slow to be considered as a part of urban planning in Australia. In particular, the paper looks at underground quarrying and underground commercial development and their potential use in the urban environment. Existing sites and potential sites for quarrying and/or commercial use have been classified using a system developed by the author. Underground quarrying may provide some solutions for planning problems involving sand and aggregate supplies, waste disposal and other uses. Commercial development involving underground excavation may be accepted if the cost of underground commercial development can be shown to be equivalent to the cost of above ground development. The paper concludes that one role of the underground construction industry is to promote tunnelling and underground space amongst architects, town planners and planning decision-makers. The Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association (AUCTA) and the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) should be instrumental in actively promoting the use of underground space in society.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

“TerraFlowingTM” is a dewatering process that addresses both the value proposition of Tailings as a Resource™, and the safe storage of tailings. “TerraFlowingTM” incorporates two stages of cyclone dewatering followed by centrifugation of the final dilute tailings stream. In this process three dewatered tailings streams are produced; a primary cyclone underflow, a secondary cyclone underflow and a centrifuge pulp. These three streams can be combined, or used, in various configurations to achieve different outcomes. The ability to vary the cyclone and centrifuge operations and configuration enables this process to deal with tailings feed variations in particle size distribution and mineralogy and deliver consistency, or design variations, in particle size distribution, tailings solids concentrations and recoveries. Water recovery can be up to 85% of the total water in the tailings with a stackable final tailings product achieved if the three tailings streams are combined in the maximum solids concentration configuration. The primary cyclone can be operated to deliver a particle size distribution suitable for tailings storage facility embankment construction or alternatives such as concrete structures or shotcrete for support. The secondary cyclone underflow and centrifuge pulp is suitable for beaching deposition within the tailings storage facility.
