Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

Computer-based block modelling of orebodies is now used at Renison Tin mine for the estimation of ore reserves. It is considered that this has resulted in improved reserve estimation for complex 'stratafault' orebodies. The results for all orebody types are more easily understood by the mine planning section and provide greater scheduling capability than those from the previous manual isoline reserve estimation method. A structural overview of the deposit can be gained by combining geological block models for the various orebodies. It is anticipated that upon completion of block modelling for all the orebodies the time spent on the annual ore reserve estimate will be significantly reduced.

The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. Recent changes to environmental legislation and trends in the environmental regulation of mining in the Northern Territory are being driven by (among other factors) Federal Government policies and international agreements on the environment. These trends are discussed and the expected application of the NT Water Quality Management Strategy (based on the National Water Quality Objectives) over the next few years is examined with respect to mine environmental management practices. Some of the potential conflicts and changes in approach which may develop are identified and examples discussed. Proactive means of integrating trends in environmental legislation with mine planning and waste management are discussed.

IRSID has in its laboratories two experi mental counter-current reduction furnaces allo- wing the simulation of the physico-chemical conditions of reduction in any gas-solid coun- ter-current process, including the blast furnace and direct-reduction shaft-furnaces. The counter current is realized by an electric furnace mo- ving along a laboratory tube filled with the material to be tested. The reducing gas stream in the tube travels in the same direction as the furnace After reduction, twenty samples, with dif- ferent degrees of reduction and which can be related to different levels of an industrial furnace, are taken from the tube and subjected to various quality tests. Experiments were realized to determine the behaviour of various types of industrial pellets when reduced under either blast furnace or shaft furnace conditions. The results show the large influence of the reducing conditions on any pa- rameter characteristic of the quality of the pellets : reduction efficiency, swelling, cru- shing strength and disintegration.

A contract for three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans of the same aerodynamic design, was placed by Mount ]sa Mines Limited in 1963. The hydraulic blade pitch changing mechanism, the method of blade fabrication, and the roll out centre casings are features of these fans. Protection devices and fan control are designed for unattended operation and remote control. The erection and commissioning of the fans during 1964-65 is described.

Formed in 1965 to investigate the bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Nabalco Pty. Limited undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a mining operation and alumina plant of at least 500 000 tonne/year capacity. The drilling programme undertaken and the analytical methods, assumptions and criteria used to define practicably extractable bauxite are described. The ore characteristics and the interpretation of results used to evaluate the reserves are detailed. The operating techniques developed in mining ten per cent of the reserves and variations experienced between indicated and actual mining are examined and discussed.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

With increasing depth of mining, geotech nical factors assume increasing importance in the design and operation of open pit coal mines. Dragline strip mines are particularly sensitive to stability conditions since the draoline is a relatively inflexible machine, particularly in relation to its limited dump- ing radius for overburden disposal. Geotechnical factors relevant to strip mine design include: 1. spoil pile stability 2. wall stability 3. floor stability 4. excavation characteristics 5. groundwater conditions A basic geotechnical investigation pro- gram for new mine feasibility studies is described. This includes: 1. terrain evaluation 2. geotechnical drilling and logging 3. geophysical logging 4. materials testing 5. seismic refraction traversing 6. groundwater studies Such a program will give an overall geotech- nical assessment of the site and highlight any areas which may require further, more detailed Investigations

  This paper describes the design and construction of the upper section of the Pike River Mine Access Road. The road extends 11 km from Logburn Road alongside Big River on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand up Pike Stream to the new mine portal on White Knight Stream (Figure 1). This new road starts on alluvial terraces, then partially follows an old logging road before entering virgin bush and traversing the true left bank of a steep sided gorge on Pike Stream some 50 - 100 m above the stream before dropping down to the mine entrance. Its development has been an extended process from route selection, consenting through to design and construction.   The paper focuses on the 1 km section of road between the Amenities Area (Figure 1) and the portal. This section of road is a steep section through the gorge, principally on Conservation estate, and has presented the most challenges and required the greatest effort to obtain the regulatory approvals, prepare the design and to construct. This paper outlines the history of the challenges faced and how the road was successfully developed.

During the past 18 months a rock mechanics project has been in operation at Renison Limited. The project was established to identify and investigate key problem areas that would affect future production at the Renison mine. An in-house approach was adopted, using shall compact equignent, to investigate ground behaviour. Information on the rock stress field was considered to be particularly important for an understanding of ground behaviour. A high horizontal stress component exists, which enables large flat dipping spans of hanging wall to be opened up, with support being provided by post pillars. The amount of support provided by these post pillars has been found to be low.

At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

There are serious problems in forecast- ing accurately and achieving this goal depends on good quality information, correct assumpt- ions and sound analysis. planner. The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

Natural sphalerite associated with copper, silver, lead-zinc, tin and tungsten deposits from various world-famous mineral deposits have been studied by cathodoluminescence (CL), laser ablasion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to determine the relationship between trace element type and content and the CL properties of sphalerite. In general, sphalerite produces a spectrum of CL colour under electron bombardment that includes deep blue, turquoise, lime green, yellow-orange, orange-red and dull dark red depending on the type and concentration of trace quantities of activator ions. Sphalerite from most deposits shows a bright yellow-orange CL colour with lmax centred at 585 nm due to Mn2+ ion, and the intensity of CL is strongly dependent primarily on Fe2+ concentration. The blue emission band with lmax centred at 470 - 490 nm correlates with Ga and Ag at the Tsumeb, Horn Silver, Balmat and Kankoy mines. Colloform sphalerite from older well-known European lead-zinc deposits and late Cretaceous Kuroko-type VMS deposits of Turkey shows intense yellowish CL colour and their CL spectra are characterised by extremely broad emission bands ranging from 450 to 750 nm. These samples are characterised by low Mn (<10 ppm) and Ag (<1 ppm), and they are enriched in Tl (1 - 30 ppm) and Pb (80 - 1500 ppm). Strong green CL is produced by sphalerite from the Balmat-Edwards district. Amber, lime-green and red-orange sphalerite produced weak orange-red CL at room temperatures, with several emission bands centred at 490, 580, 630, 680, 745, with lmax at 630 nm being the strongest. These emission bands are well correlated with trace quantities of Sn, In, Cu and Mn activators. Sphalerite from the famous Ogdensburg and Franklin mines exhibited brilliant deep blue and orange CL colours and the blue CL may be related to Se. Cathodoluminescence behaviour of sphalerite serves to characterise ore types and help detect technologically important trace elements.
