A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

The construction of mine headframes of reinforced concrete is not a new departure as many structures have been built of this, material particularly in Canada and South Africa. This type of construction has been satisfactorily tested in service and is now accepted by the mining fraternity.The two headframes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are the first structures of this type to be built in Australia, and provide an interesting application of reinforced concrete design and construction.Reasons for Adoption of ConcreteDuring 1947 the writer visited D.S.A. and Canada and inspected three headframes, of reinforced concrete construction.Leading details are as follows:(i) Hollinger Gold Mines. (Timmins, Ontario) : Height of sheaves 110 ft. Shaft has provision for 4 skips each of 12,000 lb. capacity. Structure incorporates surface crushing plant.(ii) International Nickel Corporation-Murray Shaft (Sudbury): Height to sheaves 153 ft. 6 in. Shaft provides for 2-12 ton skips and 2 cages. Surface crushing plant built integrally with frame.(iii) Asbestos-Johns Manviae (Quebec): Height of sheaves 116 ft. Shaft provides for 2 skips 200 cu. ft.

Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.

The classic description of Project Finance as "the reliance by lenders on the cashflow of a project, supported by the assets of the project with no recourse to the project sponsor's corporate balance sheet" has, like most other terms in the finance industry, evolved through recent usage. The area now under most scrutiny is the sharing of risks between parties either most able to take them or prepared to accept payment for them. Creativity in, and flexibility of financing structures have enabled project lending to continue under a dramatically different economic outlook. The diminishing competitiveness of the Australian producers in a global market place of uncertain commodity prices has discouraged the advancement of many large scale resource projects. The majority of new project financings has been designed to assist the relatively small company promote and develop its first projects. New trends- are emerging in four areas: sources of capital; borrowing structure; financing instruments (securitisation); and risk underpinning. As project financing becomes more widely used, the range of interested financiers grows. New initiatives contribute to its development and evolution with a view to increase effectiveness to the sponsor of any new venture.

Over the last decade mineral exploration in New South Wales has increased markedly. This is due to various factors including the influx of overseas companies an. capital, increase and stabilization of metal prices and improvements in exploration techniques. The initiation of full-scale petroleum exploration and recent discoveries of large mineral deposits in the west, north-west and north of Australia has increased overseas capital, and brought scientists and technicians into the country. Naturally there has been an overflow into New South Wales, which is less attractive as an area for new and large-scale discoveries. In some fields, rise in metal prices and price stabilization has largely contributed to the intensif- ication of exploration. Increased tin production in New South Wales since 1963 is a direct result of price rise and stabilization, and rise in the price of silver has revived an interest in silver prospecting in recent Years,

In the field of mining engineering, design and planning are complex tasks, which require the knowledge of various engineering disciplines. GRUBE (Graphisch-RechnerUnterstiitzter BergwerksEntwurf) is a modular databased program system, which offers computer aid for all mining departments using a 3D CAD software as the user interface. Despite the data quantity and complexity, specific and uniform working conditions have to be applied to the planning of technical equipment of a pit. With the application of 3D graphics, complex data stores and their interrelations become 'palpable' for the user by suitable visualisation. GRUBE-M forms the mechanical operations module of GRUBE, in which underground locations displayed as three-dimensional graphic models are `equipped' interactively. Planning alternatives can be created and compared quickly in terms of technical calculations and economical analysis.

The Vanderbijl Park sinter plant in South Africa was investigated to determine the reason for the production of very fine sinter not acceptable as feedstock for the blast furnace. A procedure was designed to generate representative samples and to prepare the samples for chemical and mineralogical analyses. Results from a mineral analyser showed that the samples are extremely heterogeneous and therefore the sampling and sample preparation methods had to be tested in order to produce representative samples. The high production capacity at the sinter plant could also give rise to sampling errors. The method designed involved sampling of the conveyor belt at the sinter plant every four hours for the duration of three days. The samples were then milled and split into smaller sections appropriate for analysis. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were conducted on the samples. The results showed a standard deviation of less then one per cent, which indicates that the samples were representative and that the method used was therefore adequate. Systematic differences in the phase proportions between normal and fine sinter samples were detected, with the fine sinter containing more haematite than the normal sinter. The sampling method employed gives added confidence that the differences are real.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

The township of Yalloum was established in 1921 to provide accommodation for the work force on the sites of the power station and open cut which were to become the basis of Victoria's electricity industry.A company town, Yallourn flourished, and in its heyday in the 1950s the township had a population in excess of 5500 residents.However the town was sited over a valuable coal field. In the 1960s, studies conducted by the State Electricity Commission indicated that excavation of this coal as a continuing development of Yalloum Open Cut was the optimum choice to meet the growing energy needs of Victoria. Operation in what became known as the Township Field commenced in 1979 and the completion of the overburden stripping was successfully achieved on target in 1991.

At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.

The Teutonic Bore deposit lies in a major greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton of Western Australia. It occurs towards the base of a suite of tholeiitic basalts, some 100 m above a felsic volcanic pile of rhyolitic composition. Sediments comprise a minor, albeit important, percentage of the mine stratigraphy.The deposit consists of a single, steeply dipping lens of massive sulphides totalling 1.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 per cent Cu, 16.4 per cent Zn, 1.22 per cent Pb and 203 g/t Ag. In addition, cross cutting "stringer" mineralisation in the footwall contributes a further 0.75 million tonnes at 2.38 per cent Cu, 1.92 per cent Zn and 52 g/t Ag to the mining reserves. Principal primary sulphides in massive and disseminated mineralisation are sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena, while minor amounts of arsenopyrite and argentiferous tetrahedrite are also present. Weathering has affected the primary mineralogy down to at least 90 m, resulting in a strongly leached oxide profile to about 85 m, overlying a thin, erratic zone of chalcocite supergene enrichment.Lateral metal zoning is marked both in massive sulphide and stringer mineralisation, with Cu/Zn ratios decreasing away from the centre of the orebody. Alteration is well developed in association with footwall stringer mineralisation, changing from a central Fe-Mg carbonate, chlorite and silica alteration zone below the massive sulphides to an outer halo of sericitisation. The spatial distribution of these minerals is patchy. Geochemically, the footwall alteration zone is characterised by central Cao, Na20 and Sr depletion (with less regular enrichment of SiO2 , Fe and MgO), surrounded by a peripheral zone of K20 enrichment.Evidence supports a classic volcanic-exhalative origin, involving submarine discharge on the flanks of a rhyolitic dome and accumulation of the massive sulphides in a local palaeotopographic depression. The sulphides overlie their feeder zone as shown by alteration and stringer mineralisation. Tholeiitic wallrocks are thought to be genetically unrelated to the mineralising solutions, although their presence as a cap over the felsic volcanics may have permitted the build up of a circulating metalliferous brine system prior to sulphide deposition.

Sixty years after its inception, after an alternation of periods of admiration and rejection by the industry, Sampling Theory can now be seen as going through its golden age. A brief history of its successive transformations and progresses achieved by its author, Pierre Gy, and his followers, reveals the theoretical as well as practical difficulties that had to be vanquished to reach this point. Its current level of acceptance and corresponding trends are discussed and illustrated, with an insight on its increasing real role in the industry and future prospects for its further development.

THIS paper is not intended to be a detailed description of the lead, smelting plant at Cockle Creek, as this has been covered in previous papers for the Institute in 1918, Proceedings No. 31, by other members of the staff; but the idea is to give some of the practices and conditions peculiar to these works, also to give some experiments carried out and the conclusions arrived at. Unfortunately, owing to the closing down of the smelting and refinery plant at these works, sone of the experiments could not be carried to a more definite and commercial basis, but they are given in the hope that they may be of interest to members, and may perhaps suggest further thought along the lines indicated.ROASTING AND SINTERINGThe greater part of the ore treated at these works came from the Central mine, Broken Hill, but, in addition, a large quantity was purchased from other parts of New South Wales and from Tasmania. Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013.
