In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

The Nanisivik Mine is located 750 km north of the Arctic Circle at the north end of Baffin Island in the Canadian High Arctic, and has been in production since 1976. The paper describes the regional and local geology and the current mining and mineral processing operations, including recent innovations in each area. The Nanisivik zinc-lead deposits comprise Mississippi Valley type sulphides in a block-faulted sediment sequence of Proterozoic age. The deposits formed in two mineralizing stages by replacement of the carbonate host rock. Exploration techniques adapted to the permafrost environment include high frequency EM and ground probing radar. Core drilling is done with calcium chloride brine but trials with heated flushing water indicate potential for cost reduction. The predominant mining method at Nanisivik is room and pillar. Cut and fill is used in some satellites to the main zone. Due to the permafrost, dry drilling is employed in the underground mining. The permafrost enhances ground stability, permitting large underground openings and, as a result, the use of relatively large scale mining equipment. For power conservation, a remote control system for the ventilation fans has reduced mine power costs. The milling of the simple coarse-grained ore in an arctic environment requires special techniques in the design and operation of the plant for materials handling, utilisation of waste heat, reagent selection and tailings disposal. Regulated heavy metal contents in effluents discharged to the sensitive environment are achieved by natural processes. A recent change from sub-aqueous disposal of tailings to beach type deposition within a cell in the tailings area is reviewed. Planning closure of the property presents special problems and an opportunity for innovative techniques. Approximately 25 per cent of the employees at Nanisivik are drawn from the Inuit population of the Canadian Arctic. As the first permanent industrial activity in the High Arctic some innovative approaches to employee relations were required which have resulted in a very stable, culturally mixed community in a remote location.

Optimum selection of explosives by means of monitoring explosive performance can lead to increased profitability through the control of fragmentation, a reduction in hangingwall and footwall damage and overall drill and blast costs. Studies conducted at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company underground copper mine evaluated in situ the performance of four explosive types. Measurements included monitoring the levels of induced shock energy and the attenuation thereof with distance. The velocity of detonation (VOD) of these explosives was also measured using in-hole techniques. Assessment of these results, together with a knowledge of the rock mass strength, facilitated the selection of an explosive that was best suited to the given rock mass conditions.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have been adopted in this study, to investigate the structure of carbonaceous materials such as graphite, brown coal char as well as coke, in order to explain their dissolution performance during ironmaking. These materials have been selected for study since they are commonly used recarburizers in the metallurgical industry. It was concluded that the crystal structure in a carbonaceous material can have a significant influence on its dissolution into iron melts. The material with the highest degree of ordering, which is graphite, showed the best dissolution performance. In contrast, the material with the lowest degree of ordering, which is brown coal char, showed the worst dissolution performance.

Gold mineralization at Kidston occurs in a semicontinuous zone near the margin of a large, late Palaeozoic breccia pipe. The pipe is ovoid in plan, funnel-shaped in cross section and straddles a contact between Proterozoic metamorphic and granitoid rocks which are intruded by a swarm of late Palaeozoic acid dykes. Rock fragments within the breccia pipe reflect the enclosing country rocks and mix in various proportions to form gradational lithological domains. Most of the gold is free and is located in the breccia matrix and in a set of inwardly dipping sheeted quartz veins which kink around the pipe margin. Sulphide minerals, dominantly pyrite, occur as disseminations in the breccia matrix and as aggregates in the cores of quartz veins. Hydrothermal altLration is pervasive within the breccia and is most intense in areas with the highest percentage of acid dyke fragments. Sericite and carbonate are the main alteration minerals. An empirically developed genetic theory for the formation of the breccia pipe and attendant mineralization involves magmatic and post-magmatic processes associated with the intrusion of a granitoid body to a shallow level in the crust. Economic evaluation of the deposit relied heavily on the results of diamond drilling. Both polygonal and geostatistical reserves were calculated and found to be in close agreement. Geostatistical reserves are considered to more closely reflect the tonnes and grade achievable during mining. Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

In the current climate, there is a real need to bridge the gap between theory and the real world mining considerations, and develop viable, cost-effective, high performance thickeners. With a greater need to extract profits from both difficult-to-process ores and lower grade orebodies, coupled with the necessity to produce 'greener', less water intensive technologies, suppliers need to take current thickener designs to the next level and into the 21st century. The complexity of 'getting it right' within a thickenerÆs feedwell, the 'nerve centre' of the thickener, is no small task. Delivering dilution water and mixing this water with incoming feed slurry, addition of flocculant, maximising flocculant-slurry interaction to build aggregate size, minimising unabsorbed flocculant percentage, volume average of solids volume fraction, momentum dissipation ratio, dilution recycle ratio, volume average shear, maximum shear rate at exit, aggregate size on exit, uniform discharge profile and more ù all of these need to occur in the right order and in the right proportions within the feedwell. This paper discusses the genesis and evolution of a new feedwell design, the first major innovation in the thickening industry in over 15 years.

The Rise & Shine Shear Zone is a shallow-dipping Cretaceous late metamorphic shear zone formed in a compressional environment. The Shotover mineralised system is dominated by normal faults with well-defined vein systems that cut across Miocene schist folds and faults related to the inception of the Alpine Fault. Despite the geological differences between these mineralisation systems, they share many common features of hydrothermal alteration that have resulted in disseminated gold in altered sheared schist. The most distinctive feature of both systems is the abundant ankeritic carbonate that has formed from decomposition of metamorphic chlorite. Excess iron from this alteration reaction combined with hydrothermal sulphur to form sulphides that host the disseminated gold. The chlorite decomposition reaction was reversed in the latter stages of both mineralisation systems, and this was accompanied by further gold emplacement in the Rise & Shine system.   Both alteration systems involved initial decomposition of metamorphic albite, followed by deposition of albite as a vein mineral in the latter stages. The fluid flow that yielded the disseminated gold was controlled by microshears that pervade host schists, in strong contrast to many Otago Schist vein systems where host rock alteration is absent. The ankeritic alteration in the Shotover and Rise & Shine mineralised systems has increased the volume of mineralised rock, and may have made suitable targets for large-tonnage, low grade gold deposits.

The rare earths market is relatively small and slow growing. Three applications using mainly cerics rare earths : catalysts, glass-ceramics and metallurgy are volume market. Inside this slow moving frame, fast growing niches can be found lamp phosphors, permanent magnets, fine cera- mics... There is no specific ore for one given element, and the natural occurence of any ele- ment is almost constant in both monazite and basnaesite. This creates the "balance problem" that consists in the best compromise between shortage and over production. The general trend of prices is downward in constant money. Despite this difficult environment (price decrease, technology changes, etc...) lots of company have always been attrac- ted by the rare earth business.

Environmental and amenity factors have introduced a new dimension to the technical problems of the mining industry in finding, extracting and processing the mineral and energy products on which we all depend. Intervention by outside regulatory bodies is restricting the production of minerals and denying the industry access to large areas in which the orebodies of the future may occur. The solution lies to a large extent within the industry itself and appropriate management techniques are necessary to ensure that exploration and mining are seen as an acceptable as well as a necessary land use. Close liaison between operators and the responsible authority is necessary to achieve these objectives and to make the best use of our land resources.

A fundamental study was carried out on super pit sulphidic gold ore to establish the most influential flotation characteristics which were subsequently used in the development of an optimum flowsheet to achieve best economical recovery of gold. In developing the flowsheet, consideration was given to existing operational constraints in the treatment of the Super Pit ore. The fundamental study also included an innovative diagnostic investigation to establish the location and value of gold in the major mineral assembly of the super pit ore from a metallurgical rather than a mineralogical perspective. This study mapped a metallurgical fingerprint of the major types of super pit ore in relation to the location and association of gold.

The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

As the search for major orebodies continues, the regolith dominated areas of the Broken Hill region remain one of the major exploration frontiers. The past exploration philosophies emphasising bedrock related characteristics have been limited in their ability to effectively explore in the regolith dominated areas, that are a feature of most of the Broken Hill region (Figure 1). If mineral exploration is to be more effective across all of the Broken Hill region, particularly in the regolith dominated areas, an appreciation and increased understanding of the regolith and landscape features are a necessity. Ironically, there have been very few studies of the regional regolith and landscape features of this region. Owing to the previous lack of an established regolith-landform framework, this study initially concentrated on the general characterisation and variation in regolith types corresponding to the area of the Broken Hill Block, within NSW (Willis, 1989; Stevens, 1986). The approach has been to produce a regional regolith-landform map at 1:100 000 scale and conduct a complimentary program of regolith sampling and site descriptions. This was a basis to identify areas for more detailed regolith-landform mapping (1:25 000 scale) and for producing a regional stratigraphic framework and models for landscape and regolith evolution. This information can then be used to provide a basis for regional mineral exploration models and strategies. This paper highlights some of the regionally significant regolith-landform features and their general significance to mineral exploration. More detailed information on specific regolith-landform features and study sites may be found in Hill et al (1994; 1996; in press) and Hill (in prep).

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

A survey of derelict and active alluvial tin and sapphire mines in the Emmaville area of northern N.S.W. as the first step in a pro- gramme of similar surveys to be undertaken throughout the State by the State Pollution Control Commission is presented. Thirty nine individual mine sites in the study area were included in the survey and an assessment made of the current level of impact on the environment at each site by assigning values of "magnitude" and "importance" to a number of impacting factors. Results are pre- sented in matrix form and mine sites ranked in order of impact "importance". Examples of alluvial tin, underground tin/arsenic and alluvial sapphire operations are discussed in detail and rehabilitation programmes proposed for implementation.

To help meet the challenge of mine finding at the start of the 21st century, the exploration geophysicist will have at his command a powerful range of tools, some new, some improved, and some which already exist today but are as yet little used. Remote sensing, using satellite and aircraft-based multi-spectral scanners, will provide the means for routinely mapping the surface distribution of certain carbonate rocks, clay and ferrous alteration minerals, based on the analysis of solar reflectance spectra. Time and emission-spectral resolved laser-induced fluorescence will likewise map the distribution of certain ore and pathfinder minerals, as well as certain skarn zones, all potentially related to ore deposits. The GPS (Global Positioning System), based on 18 orbitting satellites, will provide a universal, three dimensional, all weather navigation system which will completely supplant all existing aerial navigation systems, and greatly facilitate aerial surveying and automated processing and presentation of the data. Aeromagnetic gradiometer measurements will provide higher geometric resolution which will yield better definition of individual geological units. Multi-method ground geophysical surveys will be greatly expedited through the use of portable microcomputer-based, multi-sensor instruments. These instruments will interface with other intelligent devices for automated processing, presentation and interpretation of the ground field data. Borehole geophysics will come into more general use, both for at-hole measurements, especially using active nuclear techniques for grade determination, and for remote detection using a variety of electrical, magnetic, seismic and other methods.
