Processing expansion options and mining fleet purchases are major cost items that receive due focus in most cost management analyses. If these items are not needed, they can significantly reduce a project’s short-term capital spend and improve profitability and value to shareholders. When conditions change prior to purchasing equipment, the purchase may no longer represent the best decision for the project.This paper outlines a structured approach for making major cost decisions to improve the value of a project, determining which items should be kept and which should be eliminated.CITATION:King, B, 2014. Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

The DeGrussa copper deposit was discovered by Sandfire Resources in April 2009. Construction of the 1.6 Mt/a concentrator, open pit and underground mining operations commenced in March 2011 with first concentrate production achieved in October 2012. Over the next ten years, DeGrussa grew to include both the DeGrussa and Monty underground mines, establishing itself as one of the world’s premier copper producers with total production of 663 000 t of contained copper by the time the mine closed. Final ore was trucked from Degrussa on 5 October 2022. This paper examines the mine closure experience from both a planning and operational perspective. The paper provides an overview of the site’s mine planning process including the factors involved in determining the end of the mine life and how this was tracked and communicated in the lead up to the end of mining operations. It will also look at some of the specific operational aspects involved in maintaining steady state production all the way through to the last day while facing increasingly challenging conditions. These factors, along with the external factors faced by most of the industry such as labour shortages and COVID related disruptions, contributed to making it an interesting journey to the end of operations at DeGrussa.

Substantial schedule advantages can be made on projects if cross-passage construction can occur at the same time as tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation with little or no impact on TBM logistics. However, this approach can prove difficult to achieve with many of the more cost-effective means of supporting the segmental lining during cross-passage break-out. This paper discusses the constraints and shortcomings of conventional approaches, and describes how a cost-effective solution involving a shotcrete shell and opening constructed inside the segmental lining was designed and constructed to deliver cost and time savings on Seattle University Link contract U220.The paper explains the spatial and schedule constraints on the TBM tunnelling and cross-passage construction, and how a shotcrete solution was arrived at in preference to traditional approaches. As the solution was novel the design had to be robust, and the paper explains how this was achieved through a combination of 3D finite element modelling and closed form solutions. Following a description of the trials to verify that the structure could be demolished post-cross-passage completion, the paper describes how the shell solution was constructed, used and demolished safely to leave the lining surface in a clean and undamaged state fit for tunnel operation.CITATION:Harding, A, Chappell, M, Burdick, M and Krulc, M, 2014. Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

North Eastern Russia encompasses the northern part of the Circum Pacific. The region comprises various tectonostratigraphic terranes, including cratonic blocks, fragments of volcanic arcs, accretionary wedge terranes, oceanic crust and passive continental margins. The terranes have been accreted to the eastern margin of the Siberian Craton in the Late Mesozoic. The prominent structures of the region are extended zones of the Mesozoic flysch and turbidites. Another important structure is the 3000 km long Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic arc which marks the Cretaceous active continental margin of northern Eurasia. The youngest structure of the region is the 2000 km long Late Cainozoic Kamchatka-Kuril island arc system. North Eastern Russia is the main gold producing region of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of recorded gold production in 1932 until 1995 the region has produced 2575 t (83M oz) of gold. Most of it, 2439.5 t, has been produced from placers. Owing to depletion of alluvial gold resources, exploration and mining emphasis is currently switching to the development of the lode deposits. At least five distinct types of the gold mineralisation are reported in North Eastern Russia - mesothermal gold mineralisation in the Mesozoic fold belts, Paleozoic epithermal gold mineralisation occurring within Omolon block, epithermal gold mineralisation related to the Mesozoic volcanics, Cainozoic epithermal gold mineralisation, gold-bearing Cu-porphyry deposits. The current paper introduces the metallogeny of lode-gold deposits of North Eastern Russia. It provides the review of the regional geology, the selected gold provinces and representative deposits with an emphasis on the mineralisation styles and distribution control.

In 1985, ZC Mines (now Pasminco South) had been unprofitable for some years due to a combination of high operating costs, low metal prices, low head grade and an aging and inadequate mining infrastructure. However, the resource of metal in the ground was still of world class, even after some 80 years of mining. A major study, which was to be of two years duration, was therefore commenced to establish a practical and profitable long term mining strategy and to cost the infrastructure options needed for its support and thus form the justification for a capital expenditure program to take the mine profitably into the 21st century and its second century of operation. This paper discusses the rationale behind the methodology adopted and the nature of the results achieved in one aspect of the study - the determination of the mineable resource and the relationship between the head grade/quantity of the economically mineable resource and the variables of cut-off grade, cost structure, annual production rate and metal prices/exchange rates. The basis of the study was the designing of some 5000 scopes to mine out the entire resource for a range of cut- off grades and the assembly of the detailed physical data thus obtained in a stope-by-stope data base for financial and other analysis. Those scopes which were shown to be economically mineable were then scheduled for two optimum annual production/cut-off grade/metal price combinations to provide life-of-mine cost and value of production cash flows.

Since the early 1900s the geotechnical community has investigated every significant failure of a tailings dam, improved our knowledge of the behaviour of the tailings storage facilities, developed analysis methods, compiled lessons learned, and committed to zero failures. The rate of occurrence of tailings dam failures has reduced since the 1980s, however, failures continue to occur and continue to surprise us. At BHP, we have decided to take an approach to the tailings management that is similar to the approach to safety. We are looking at ways to eliminate, substitute, separate or engineer around the hazard (tailings dam failure). As such, our ultimate long term goal would be to eliminate the need for new tailings facilities. Unfortunately, we have not developed yet technologies for extracting many of the common metals and minerals without producing tailings. Our shorter term goal is to substitute the current conventional slurry tailings facilities with less risky dryer facilities. We are working with vendors and research organizations to develop technologies that can be efficiently applied on a large scale. At the same time, we are committed to using the best available engineering to reduce the risks associated with our existing and new conventional tailings facilities. The best engineering can be achieved by people with the appropriate education, experience, attention to detail, discipline and authority. We have implemented a system of governance to make sure, we have the best engineering applied to all our facilities, considering the specific conditions at each site.This paper presents the current tailings governance process at BHP, and the initiatives that were undertook towards achieving a zero failure goal. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems have come under growing scrutiny as a perceived mitigation to fuel and equipment price fluctuations, labour shortages and the need to move everincreasing volumes of material. Individual vendors and delivery organisations are now offering a sometimes confusing array of systems, particularly for the dig and dump side operations.One system does not suit all operations. This paper seeks to document the factors that should be considered in assessing the suitability of different IPCC systems, with a focus on dig side equipment layouts in particular. These factors include the productivity of the systems, interactions with the drill/blast and bench operation sequence, the ease of relocation, flexibility to changes in the reserve, scalability and compatibility with other elements of the system.

Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

Granulation of the iron ore blend and the additives is the foremost step in the agglomeration of iron ore fines to achieve a permeable bed during sintering, which is crucial for sinter productivity. This study investigated the granulation of four types of blends to determine the impact of granulation on bed permeability. The blends were granulated in a rotating drum at various moisture contents and their JPU permeability was measured at each moisture content in a permeability pot (diameter 95 mm and height 500 mm) at various flow rates. Several independent experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in permeability when mixtures of different particle size range (-1 mm and +1 mm) were introduced into a packed bed with a larger particle size range (-6.3 mm to +4.0 mm). The results revealed that the addition of particles in the -1 mm size range had a more pronounced negative impact on permeability compared to particles in the +1 mm size range. This can be attributed to the relatively higher energy losses (mainly inertial) associated with the presence of -1 mm particles in the mixture. The findings were used to quantify the granulation process based on the -1 mm particle size fraction in the granulated mix and their utilisation (denoted by UI-1 mm). For achieving optimal permeability in a specific blend, it was found that a UI-1 mm (utility index of -1 mm particle size) ranging from 0.82 to 0.92 was required. However, exceeding a UI-1 mm value of 0.95 resulted in weaker granules prone to deformation and led to decreased bed permeability. The study also showed that the UI-1 mm was highly dependent on the water addition per kg of -1 mm in dry feed and suggested adding ~80 to 110 mL of water per kg of -1 mm in dry feed to attain the best possible permeability. Additionally, the research proposed a mechanism involving the melting of granules at high temperatures and highlighted the influence of -1 mm particles on bed permeability during the sintering process.

"Predictive maintenance (also known as PHM or equipment ‘health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future equipment failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:reduction of equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetimeautomatic determination of the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis avoidance of costs of unnecessary maintenance and unexpected failures improved safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data preprocessing is performed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques. In the case that data isn’t available for the full range of operating modes, operating scenarios can be simulated. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate equipment health. Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be operationalised in an IT environment such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.In this paper, we use both historical and simulated data of the plant under various modes of operation including run to failure, and we then leverage machine learning techniques in MATLAB to estimate degradation and remaining useful life. This technique, of combining both simulation models and machine learning, in the areas of predictive maintenance and equipment health monitoring has been adopted by Safran, makers of aircraft jet engines, since 2007. At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

During periods of high metal prices and strong metal demand tailings retreatment can be economic. Most tailings retreatment operations are technically challenging, low margin operations, because the easily recovered mineral has already been removed, therefore, process improvements can potentially yield large economic benefits. The Hellyer tailings dam was owned by Intec Ltd and contained 10.9 million tonnes grading 2.8 per cent zinc, 3.0 per cent lead, 88 g/t of silver, 0.16 per cent copper and 2.6 g/t gold. In November 2006 the Polymetals Group, as operator, restarted the Hellyer plant to retreat these tailings. Within a few months the operation had stabilised and Polymetals was meeting budgeted targets of throughput, metal recovery and concentrate quality. Polymetals and Intec then investigated methods that would improve the metallurgical result for this difficult to treat tailings. Since the tailings are fine-grained with 80 per cent <45 ¦m, magnetic aggregation of the paramagnetic sphalerite was evaluated. Magnetic aggregation of an oxidised tailings feed has not been tested before, nor had the technology been available when Hellyer ore was originally processed. Extensive statistical test work showed magnetic aggregation of the sphalerite fines in the zinc cleaner circuit increased total zinc recovery. The increase in the mean zinc recovery with magnetic conditioning was 3.63 per cent, at a statistical level of confidence of 97.8 per cent, and at the same mean zinc concentrate grade.

With the introduction in recent years of third-generation interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, monitoring of mine slopes, benches and surrounding areas has benefitted from increased accuracy and coverage. Fundamental research into point and distributed scattering techniques has pushed the use of InSAR to provide higher spatial and height resolution. In this paper we discuss the operationalisation of third-generation InSAR techniques and show its application to active mining operations.This paper will discuss the use of multiple independent measurements of ground movement obtained from operationally-derived InSAR products over a wide variety of deformation areas within an active open pit mining operation (ie pit slopes, dewatering depressions, tailings containment and waste dumps). A technique that shortens the time between observations (increased observation frequency) and provides ongoing estimates of measurement accuracy will be described. The methodology exploits available satellite data by using multiple satellites and multiple beams. The paper will also examine factors in the design of a mine survey with third-generation InSAR and illustrate some of the necessary engineering trade-offs to efficiently monitor a mine from space.Overall, this paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities and advantages of operational third-generation InSAR techniques for ground movement monitoring of mining operations and provide a framework for proper design of a mine InSAR survey.CITATION:Henschel, M D, Sato, S, Ahola, R and McParland, M A, 2014. Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

Stawell Gold Mines (SGM) is an underground mining operation located in Victoria, Australia. The mining method employed is long hole retreat stoping, utilising up and downholes and artificial concrete pillars. Stawell is currently mining the Golden Gift and Magdala orebodies.Access to the Magdala and Golden Gift deposits is via 6.0 m wide by 5.5 m high declines developed at a gradient of one in eight to one in seven from the surface to a depth of 1500 m, with a planned depth of 1650 m. From the declines, cross cutting drives are developed to intersect the orebodies. Orebodies in the Gift system are discrete lodes which are generally mined from a bottom up centre retreat to minimise geotechnical stresses.Ore development fronts are currently located between 1000 m and 1500 m below surface, with all ore being hauled to the surface using a fleet of 60 tonne underground trucks. With the use of conventional pyrotechnic long period (LP) delays, broken rock of combined ore and waste is thrown 10 m from the face and the materials hauled to the surface. The majority of the mullock from development is consumed in the underground as backfill.With the use of Orica Mining Services eDev™ Electronic Blasting System for Tunnelling, the waste is thrown up to 40 m from the face, while majority of the ore is left 5 - 10 m from the face, effectively segregating ore and waste. This enables significant recovery of gold values with minimal loss and significantly reduced dilution. By using this technique in ore drives with a 30:70 waste to ore ratio, SGM is able to haul 24 000 tonnes less mullock to the surface annually. Resue mining is applied to narrow vein headings and gives a 40 per cent grade increase at the faces as well as increasing the economic footprint of development. This will also contribute to an improved grade profile for the year from 3.98 - 4.16 g/t Au and allow extra capacity for ore haulage from stoping and for milling.This paper describes the application and the successful blast outcomes achieved using the eDev™ Electronic Blasting Systems for resue mining at SGM. Results to date, since commencement in March 2010, have been achieving significant benefits in terms of ore grade as confirmed by geologists grab sample grades. Face advance have also shown improvement with better breakage of perimeter holes giving improved face profile. These benefits are delivering increased productivity and safety performance when compared to other resue firing techniques.

Ion exchange (IX) as a primary production technique has been applied commercially since the 1950s; its application in the uranium industry continues to be widespread and is utilised to a lesser degree in the gold industry. The majority of ion exchange applications, outside of gold and uranium, have primarily been for secondary metal recovery and impurity removal. Newer developments in the application of ion exchange, as well as changes in regulatory requirements, are bringing about the wider use of ion exchange as a primary production technique not only for high value metals such as uranium, platinum group metals (PGM), refractory metals and rare earths, but also looking at base metals such as nickel and copper. The ability to build lower-cost, safer, less polluting processing plants with smaller footprints is driving a greater interest in IX, with the main competitors remaining solvent extraction and carbon-in-pulp/leach.
