All major companies now producing iron ore in Brazil currently employ or are planning to employ some sort of concentration method to upgrade their fine sized products (sinter feed fines and pellet feed fines). The criteria for the selection of the most suitable concentration method for each application include a series of parameters; the most important among them being related to ore mineralogy. This paper reviews the concentration operations currently employed in Brazil and shows how ore mineralogy plays a fundamental role in the selection of a given method. Examples involving gravity concentration (jigs and spirals), magnetic separation (Rare Earth wet drums, ferrous wheel, and Jones type magnetic separators) and flotation (especially column flotation) are discussed. Fundamentally important for the selection of a concentration method is the mineralogy of iron-bearing minerals and gangue minerals presented to the feed to the concentration unit operation. For instance, the presence of liberated quartz as the major gangue mineral for a pellet feed size stream generally indicates that flotation will be the best selection for the concentration of that stream. However, even if magnetite is present only in the form of crystal relicts within hematite grains, it may lead to the selection of either magnetic separation alone or a combination of magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating such material. Presence of gibbsite and/or kaolinite as the major phase containing alumina will also affect the selection of the concentration method in all cases. Again for the case of pellet feed size streams, kaolinite does not interfere with flotation whereas gibbsite tends to contaminate flotation concentrate (pellet feed fines) as it is depressed together with iron oxides and hydroxides during the reverse cationic flotation process.

Research on gas distribution in the iron- making blast furnace has been conducted in three separate areas. Firstly, experimental work has been conducted to determine the important parameters which dictate the pressure losses in homogeneous and heterogen- eous packed beds. Secondly, a theoretical analysis of gas flow through the furnace softening-melting zone has been undertaken to determine the effect of the shape of the zone on the distribution of gas flow towards the furnace walls. Thirdly, a theoretical programme has been undertaken to develop methods for the prediction of furnace soften- ing-melting zone shape from furnace tempera- ture and gas composition measurements.

Many of the ‘new paradigms in mining’ and notions of ‘sustainable mining’ have at their core the requirement for reliable, continuous centimetre-level positioning accuracy to enable increased automation of mining operations. The deployment of precision systems for navigating, controlling and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels with real time position information increase their operational efficiency, and reduce the need for humans to be exposed to hazardous conditions. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the best known, and only currently fully operational, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) providing positioning capability anywhere in the globe, on a continuous 24/7 basis, with accuracies ranging from the dekametre-level to the sub-centimetre-level depending on hardware and operational configuration. Despite this versatility, GNSS cannot satisfy the high accuracy positioning requirements for many applications in mine surveying, and mine machine guidance and control. The reason is that increasingly open cut mines are getting deeper, resulting in a reduction of the ‘sky-view’ necessary for GNSS systems to operate satisfactorily. Yet, to date there have been no viable alternatives to GNSS that can be deployed in mine environments that can meet the challenging requirements in open cut mines.Locata Corporation, a Canberra-based company, has invented a terrestrial high accuracy positioning system known as ‘Locata’ that can augment GNSS with extra terrestrial signals to permit cm-level positioning accuracy even when there are insufficient GNSS satellite signals for reliable positioning and navigation. Locata relies on a network of synchronised ground-based transceivers that transmit positioning signals that can be tracked by suitably equipped user receivers. Hence Locata can be considered a new type of ‘local constellation’, able to provide high accuracy positioning coverage where GNSS fails. This paper introduces some of the technical aspects of this Australian technology and describes tests conducted by Leica Geosystems over the last few years at Newmont Boddington Gold in Western Australia. A recent news announcement by Leica Geosystems (12 January 2011) has confirmed that their new mine management system will have combined GNSS + Locata positioning capability – the first commercial product that integrates GNSS and Locata capabilities into a single high accuracy and high availability navigation device for open cut mine machine automation applications.

Integrated Remote Operations Centres (IROCs) have a crucial role in optimising a mine’s carbon emissions, especially as industry faces an imperative to achieve net-zero emissions on an accelerated timeline. To meet this time pressure, operations must adopt a comprehensive approach to energy-related carbon management and history has proven that modern technologies cannot be simply bolted into existing operations. An IROC is the most dependable solution to enable a swift transition from strategy to operational tactics that support carbon optimisation. Achieving net-zero emissions requires addressing significant energy management challenges such as fleet electrification, integration of renewable energy sources and large-scale energy storage. These challenges demand a profound change in planning, managing and executing work at large operations. The key to overcoming these challenges is an integrated approach incorporating collaborative decision-making across the value chain and more sophisticated planning approaches. Additionally, closer integration with downstream processing offers opportunities for carbon optimisation across the value chain. This includes the ability to supply tailored products that meet more varied feed-requirements of customers transitioning to less carbon-intensive processes and developing collaborative decision-making across the entire steelmaking value chain (by incorporating steelmakers, transport, coal/natural-gas/hydrogen supply, energy supply and iron-ore supply). However, this requires significant improvement in collaborative maturity and integrated decision-making capability. Finally, the imperative to reduce carbon emission demands the introduction of a range of new technologies into existing operations. The new technologies will increase the operational complexity of the mines and IROCs will need to evolve capabilities to manage the increase complexity and support the effective operationalisation and integration of these new mining technologies. This paper outlines the new capabilities required and the role of IROCs in effective integration across the demand value chain. The focus is on building on the mining industries’ existing IROC experience and augmenting with processes, technologies and lessons from other industries.

"Cash flow modelling during project evaluation is enhanced when probabilistic methods are applied to the inputs. One of the important inputs is the quarterly production profile. Typically, the steady-state production profile provided to project evaluation practitioners is deterministic, with each quarter the same as every other quarter. This is unrealistic as actual production profiles from existing mines exhibit a range or quarter-on-quarter variance. Monte Carlo stochastic simulation of the production profile can be used to provide a range of possible outcomes, but how are these ranges selected? This paper describes the use of quarterly production variance from a large database of mines worldwide as a benchmark to inform the appropriate selection of ranges. The coefficient of variation is used to rank the production from mines, with quartile analysis applied to indicate industry best, median and worst variation. Due diligence of existing mines and evaluation of future production performance can be quantitatively assessed using this approach. Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.

Continuous improvement might be defined as seeking incremental improvement over time through improved equipment, processes, technology and the efforts of people. Most people working in ore processing facilities embrace the general principles of continuous improvement. However, given the industry-wide issues with skilled personnel and the constantly changing environment in ore processing facilities, it is often difficult to identify improvements in a facility over a given time period. The driver for these outcomes is the use of basic principles and technology to achieve best practice targets. The process involves four stages: develop standards of practice to define best practice in specific areas; write procedures to guide the organisation towards these best practices; implement the procedures and develop a review process to provide a method of measuring performance against best practice.By reviewing performance against best practice on a regular basis, the organisation measures progress towards the best practice targets and the incremental improvement between these regular reviews is a measure of continuous improvement.This paper provides the background for developing standards of practice for metal accounting, metallurgy and metallurgical management. With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. "Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.1mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80% and mass yields of less than 1% can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

THE area of the State of New South Wales is not great, nevertheless it has very large and important Mineral Resources. This is the more noticeable when the values of the annual mineral production from the individual States of the Commonwealth arecompared with the value of the New South Wales production. The principal minerals mined now are not gold, copper, and tin, as they were in the early years following the gold rush of 1851, the centre of gravity of commercial mineral activity having moved to coal and "oil-shale," water, limestone (with cement), silver-lead-zinc cadmium, sulphur, slate and other building and ornamental stone, road materials, and clays.From small areas totalling only 650 sq. miles, coal to the extent of 311,000,000 tons, valued at £151,000,000, has been won.The estimate of actual and probable reserves by the Mines Department within an area of less than 1000 sq. miles is about 14,000,000,000 tons, while the potential reserves within the remaining 15,500 sq. miles of concealed coal fields must be enormous. Even taking into account only the actual and pI:obable reserves in the 1000 sq. miles known, and assuming a depletion at the rate of 350,000,000 tons a year, or somewhat greater than that of the British Isles at present, and assuming an average value of £1 a ton, with money at 5% compound interest, then the present value of this coal (40 years of depletion) would be £5,575,000,000 approximately: truly an enormous present value for a business of 40 years, dealing only with 1000 sq. miles of country. The location of the main coal basin in New South Wales is one of great strategic importance. It lies almig and near a seaboard, with excellent facilities for anchorage; the coal is of very high quality, and is readily accessible; the climate is admirable. Were this same coal at Port Darwin, its commercial importance would not be be pronounced.

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

Hydraulic transport of coal has been used for many years on the West Coast of New Zealand to extract small blocks of steeply dipping coal. Recent development at Strongman 2 Mine has seen the use of high pressure monitors to cut coal and a corresponding increase in the scale of production.This paper provides a brief introduction to hydraulic mining, describes the present system used at Strongman 2 and discusses future potential development.

The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. This discussion examines a series of generic subsidence events and how the risk may be assessed and managed and the hazard controlled.CITATION:Ham, B?W, 2014. Continuous, steady-state laboratory flotation tests showed that the recovery of cha1copyrite from a naturally occurring ore, under conditions closely resembling those of plant practice, could be expressed in terms of a first order rate equation.Tests on full-scale plant flotation cells, using impulse tracers, indicated ideal mixing of the pulp in the cells.It was demonstrated that values of first order flotation rate constants can onlv be obtained from conventional methods of analysis in special cases.Analysis of a plant sampling campaign by the author supported a first order kinetic equation for two mineral species, and for the individual size fractions of one of these.The effect of stage-addition of reagents is interpreted in kinetic terms.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. In the lower levels the ground became heavier, and although the stopes were for the most part long, wide, high, and irregular, and not sectionalized, no difficulty was experienced in winning the ore, and no accident of a serious...
