The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

In the UK during the 1990s the energy companies had developed a policy of æDash for GasÆ, building large natural gas power stations to produce more than 30 per cent of the UKÆs electricity demand. The price of imported thermal coal was dropping and the electricity generators were putting pressure on the UK coal producers to produce coal at a reduced cost. Imported coal from Columbia, South Africa, America and Australasia had increased their market share in thermal coal sales to over 50 per cent of a 55 Mtpa market. The pressure on the UK coal industry to reduce costs and improve productivity levels from an ever decreasing resource was high. Companies were benchmarking their operations on the imported coal producers and had to realign their organisations, productivity levels and costs to world best practice, not just technically, but in world class organisational management techniques.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

"Although a resource model is central to the mineral resource value estimation process (Glacken and Snowden, 2001), creating it is a labour intensive task and in the end it is a limited representation of the actual orebody. Creating this resource model is a labour intensive task that requires inputs from geology, mining, metallurgical and commercial disciplines. It requires thousands of samples from hundreds of drill holes to be verified, grouped in geological domain, interpolated and then valued. Even after all this effort, a model is only an estimation; therefore further significant effort has gone into quantifying uncertainty in the model and subsequently risk around any value estimates derived from the model. Further risks to model quality are introduced through poorly conditioned data or incorrect assumptions.This paper proposes the application of machine learning to automate the resource model development. Machine learning is applied to the traditionally manual tasks of geological formation, domain identification and validation of the block model mineralogy. Through automation the resource estimation process can be accelerated, allowing more drill holes or a larger resource body to be processed in a given time frame, or allowing the process to be more agile to changes in input data and assumptions. A case study based on drill hole data from a Western Australian iron ore deposit (Government of Western Australia, Department of Mines and Petroleum, 2015) is used to demonstrate the application of machine learning in this process.CITATION:Oliver, S and Willingham, D, 2016. Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. Despite the importance of the primary crushing stage, performance optimisation is not well analysed with sufficient focus to give improvement opportunities. At the Newcrest owned Telfer operation, liner life plays an important part in scheduling planned maintenance. Major consideration is given to monitoring crusher performance, as the highly abrasive nature of the feed significantly impacts the liner wear life. A study was undertaken by the lead author which focused on establishing a strong baseline of accurate data pertaining to the performance of the crusher, in terms of, operating parameters, liner life and key machine design factors. As part of the study, mining feed materials were examined for a particular set of liners and this revealed that improved methods should be pursued. Due to the competitive nature of the mining industry, the business solution to complex problems with long shutdown cycles should be streamlined to incorporate a non-operational modelling approach that is significantly more efficient than traditional online trial and error methods. In order to dramatically reduce the time and business risks, it was decided to engage services to model and simulate the liner life by varying main operational and mechanical factors. The key to all simulation work is gathering high quality baseline data. Such data allowed deployment of the Kinematic Crusher Model and validation of the model against worn 2D wear liner profiles. The proven model was then successfully deployed to predict operational values that defined crusher performance. To enhance the study, further investigation into a set of mechanical and operational simulations generated a sensitivity matrix measuring key performance parameters throughout the wear life of the liners. The study revealed throughput as a highly sensitive parameter and a change in eccentric throw provided the greatest improvement in extending liner wear life.

"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. Establishing a robust geotechnical instrumentation and construction monitoring plan is one of the keys to the successful delivery of the world’s largest soft-ground bored tunnel in Seattle, Washington. The paper describes and provides a return of experience on current and best practice for monitoring tunnelling projects in urban areas. The owner’s contractual approach is discussed to highlight the flexibility of the design-built contract in achieving equal or better solutions by allowing for the use of innovative technics. Special attention is given to the management and involvement of third parties (building owners, utility owners), including the public, to overcome all challenges faced during the installation of the monitoring system in downtown Seattle for over 1000 instruments. This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

A material aim when feeding ore blends into a processing facility is to reduce the variability of the properties of the feed material and to maximise the output, or throughput. At the Mining Geology conference of 2019, we presented a paper on optimal blending of coking coal given geological variability. The paper introduced integer-programming techniques to both maximise value and minimise feed or product variability. We discussed an application where the geological uncertainty is characterised using a normal distribution and exact solutions are readily obtainable using second order conic constraints in the mathematical model. Geological uncertainty is not always normally distributed, many properties will be characterised as log normal or some other skewed distribution. For example, copper can be some form of lognormal and Fe in Iron ore has a left skewed distribution. In this paper, we discuss some distribution free techniques to optimise the blends of plant feed or output given a quantified geological uncertainty. We discuss the sample average approximation method and how to set-up and apply the method to an ore blending problem. Evaluating a case study demonstrates that the explicit use of non-normally distributed geological uncertainty can better optimise feed into an ore processing facility and potentially add significant value. The approach is equally applicable to all mining and processing operations that blend material into a processing facility or directly into a saleable product.

Aitik is a large copper porphyry type deposit located in northern Sweden, currently exploited at an annual rate of approximately 45 Mt. The ore’s exceptionally low head grade of 0.25 per cent Cu and varying degrees of hardness across the entire deposit pose challenges to the two fully autogenous grinding lines, each of which comprises a primary autogenous mill in series with a pebble mill. The variability in ore grindability frequently leads to fluctuations in mill throughput. Within the framework of a geometallurgical approach, the present study investigated the relationships between ore grindability and modal mineralogy. For this purpose, drill core samples from different lithologies were subjected to Boliden AB’s in-house grindability tests. This fully autogenous laboratory-scale test generates a grindability index mainly related to abrasion breakage, which is a significant breakage mechanism within autogenous mills. The test results suggested divergent degrees of grindability within and across the selected rock types. A combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses was performed for the grinding products and bulk mineral samples. The resulting mineralogical and elemental properties were subsequently correlated to the parameters from the grindability tests. It was shown that the main mineral phases, such as plagioclase, quartz, and micas, correlate well with the grindability indices. Similar correlations were found regarding the sample’s chemical composition, attributable to the main mineral phases. A further inverse correlation was established between the sample’s calculated average Mohs hardness and the grindability indices. Moreover, mineral liberation information provided by scanning electron microscopy was associated with the parameters mentioned earlier. The identified relationships between grindability, modal mineralogy, and element grades may help Boliden develop a predictive throughput model for Aitik based on the mine’s block model.

The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. Drilling has always been one of the most important parts of the exploration process with most companies spending around 25% of their budget on drilling. Although superficially there appears to be little difference in drills and drilling practice a number of major refinements have taken place over the last decade that have significantly changed the drilling scene. One of the most important advances has been in hydraulic engineering giving rise to the Dual Purpose top drive drilling rigs. These have led to significant productivity increases with the high rotation speeds and longer fleets. Downhole technology has also advanced with better hammers, stronger drill rods, impregnated coring bits and improved drilling fluids. Although geologists continue to measure drilling performance on a cost per metre basis, greater consideration is at last being paid to the quality of sample produced. This is particularly the case with RC drilling where quite sophisticated automatic and semi automatic splitting devices have been developed. Drill operators are now required to be experienced in both Diamond coring and air drilling and be better qualified to maintain the more sophisticated machinery. Management of drilling companies or drilling divisions has also had to change to accommodate both the high capital cost of equipment and the demands of keeping drilling a cost effective exercise.

Traditional engineering practice for concentrator design uses a mixture of risk minimisation options and capital minimisation approaches. Often this is based on the preferences and experiences of the engineers involved.A geometallurgical approach involves identifying primary lithology, alteration, and mineral dispersion patterns within a deposit to allow representative samples for test programs. This provides a method to infer from laboratory test results meaningful production data for larger amounts of the ore body. Geometallurgical models can be integrated into the resource block model and subsequent mine plan and can assist in predicting when difficulties in the processing route might be expected, allow adjustment of the design to compensate for these or provide an early warning system so that production forecasts can be more adequately developed. Simulation modelling is the process of creating a computer model of a real system based on mathematical logic. In simulated time, the model explores the randomness and chronological sequencing of events observed on real systems. The objective is to mimic the real system with sufficient accuracy to make predictions of real behaviour under experimental conditions. Amec Foster Wheeler often use the ‘discrete-event’ simulation modelling technique. This method is well suited for inclusion of the statistical variation of effects in unit operation, mechanical availability, throughput and operating strategy (based on historical operating data for equipment downtime), operating schedules and equipment capacity. The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores.
