An experimental investigation of the thermal and mechanical responses of rock materials to laser radiation is described. Specifically, the following three topics have been studied in detail: 1. Temperature measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 2. Strain measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 3. Observation and evaluation of cracking and spalling phenomena in constrained and unconstrained thin discs respectively, subjected to laser radiation. In conjunction with the experimental work done, use was made of a heat flow analysis and a stress analysis program developed for this purpose. It was possible to theoretically predict the thermal and mechanical responses of a rock specimen to laser radiation and then compare them with experimental observations. Good correlations were obtained.

The kinetics of the important reactions occurring in an electrowinning cell have been determined. This information has been used to quantify relationships between the operating variables of current density, solution composition, agitation, and temperature and the resulting current efficiency and deposit quality. Analysis of these results has shown (1) the importance of dissolved iron in determining maximum possible current efficiency and corrosion rate at the cathode suspension loop, (2) the role of agitation, current density, inert salts and temperature in*determining deposit quality and (3) the effects of non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic conditions from the bottom to top of the cell. The significance of the results of this study to the operation of a commercial plant directly treating acid leach solutions is discussed.

THE object of this paper is to record and interpret data collected during the examination of over 250 barite deposits in the Central Mineral District of Missouri. [ ] In the course of this study, the origin of the deposits, which the author believes to be hydrothermal, has been given particular attention. Economic barite deposits occur in two main areas in Missouri: (I) in the Washington County District of Southeast Missouri, from which over go pct of the state's production is derived; and (2) in the Central Mineral District, which includes portions of 15 counties in Central Missouri (Fig I). Mining operations have been carried out in British Columbia since the time of the first settlers in the area. The early developments were mainly small volume, high-grade operations, producing small quantities of tailings wastes. In these early days the nearest stream was a logical first choice for tailings disposal. Where streams suitable for accepting the tailings were not available or where streams crossing the International Border could not be used for this purpose, the nearest convenient land site was selected for storing the tailings. Old tailings waste piles exist at many locations in the Province and are readily evident, for example, in the Princeton and Hedley areas. Figs. 1 and 2 are photographs showing the present condition of two of these old tailings dams. [ ]

A strong step towards acknowledgement of mining as a skilled trade has been taken by the Tintic Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. In May 2 ceremonies, a pilot program was signed into force which, possibly for the first time in US history, recognizes mining as an apprentice trade and grants journeyman status to those who complete the prescribed training sequence. The apprenticeship standards, hammered out after months of consultation between management, labor, and government, are presently limited only to underground hard-rock mining and only within Kennecott's Tintic Division, but the architects of the program are confident that the concept will spread-first to other underground operations where miners desire documented evidence of their special skills, then to open-pit and soft-rock operations.

RECENT investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebert1,? Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses.

As recently as the mid-1930's, steam and rail haulage were still the primary means of moving large quantities of rock. However, 2- to 5-ton standard on-highway trucks were beginning to be used in the mining industry's efforts to lower haulage costs. It was quickly obvious that rubber-tired equipment was more flexible, faster and more maneuverable. The trend towards haulage trucks had begun. Now while savings were being realized, the severe operating conditions encountered in open pit operations proved too much for the lightly constructed frames, gasoline engines and highly inflated tires. As a result, a few years later, the first 10 to 15-ton, two-axle heavy duty trucks were designed specifically to operate under off-highway conditions.

Technical sessions will be held in the morning and afternoon of both days. A smoker on Friday afternoon will afford an opportunity to get together socially. Saturday evening is left free for private parties to the beach at Galveston, where a wide variety of entertainment is available. On Oct. 4 there will be an excursion to Sugarland oil field, with luncheon at Boling and a visit to Boling sulfur mine and plant in the afternoon. CONSIDERABLE interest has been shown in recent years toward determining the crystal structure, mode of formation, and chemical composition of the x phase, designated as such by Andrews,' who was the first to establish its presence in Fe-Cr- Ni-Mo alloys . Later work2 by the same author has shown that the occurrence of x depends on the presence of some molybdenum in the alloy. The phase, which appears to be identical or very similar to a manganese, has a body-centered-cubic structure and is closely related to s phase. AMAX Base Metals R&D, Inc. has developed technology for extracting and recovering platinum and palladium from spent automobile exhaust emission control catalyst. Our most promising route is a chloride-based hydrometallurgical flowsheet in which catalyst pellets or crushed monoliths are leached in HC1 with an oxidant at 95°C without agitation. Alumina co-dissolution can be limited by thermal pre-treatment of the catalyst. The leach solutions are treated by one of several precious metals recovery techniques to produce a high grade PGM concentrate. For the new generation of three-way catalytic converters which contain rhodium, an H2S04 preleach could selectively extract much of the rhodium while leaving the platinum and palladium behind. Capital and operating costs will be discussed.

Knowledge of the state of stress at the bottom of a drillhole is of practical importance in rock drilling, since the induced stresses must exceed the strength of the rock in order to cause fracture. This note reports on a numerical method to determine the stress distribution at the bottom of a borehole induced by a static bit load and overburden and fluid pressures. The procedure adopted is similar to that for the plane-strain, discrete model employed by Harper and Ang.1,2 The rock medium is considered to be homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic-perfectly-plastic. THE gravity concentrator of the Hecla Mining Co. was originally constructed in 1888 by the Milwaukee Mining Co., which was operating the Gem of the Mountains mine. It was purchased by the Hecla Mining Co. in 1900, and placed in operation 2 years later. At that time FIG. 1.-HECLA MINING CO. In general, the trend in the United States is in the direction of larger and larger furnaces with ever increasing capacity from which, with improved details in methods and equipment, and attention to details of management, considerable progress in. economy of production has been attained, in fuel consumption and in other items of production cost.

The electrical properties of this area are characterized by a function p(z) (Fig. I), which shows the relationship between resistivity p of the soil and the depth z. For such general case the apparent resistivity p* will be computed, by earth-resistivity measurements carried out by any given configuration of electrodes. General solutions of this problem appear to be very important for interpretation of field results of resistivity measurements, concerning structural investigations. Such solutions have been given by many authors for the special case of a finite number of homogeneous layers (Fig. 2)lV4 as well as for the more general case of continuously ranging resistivities.5-8

PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents3 or by starch.4 The object of this work was to study the floatability of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH.

IN spite of considerable interest among blast furnace operators on the question of the penetration of air into the furnace, there is still uncertainty as to how far the blast does, in fact, penetrate. Moreover, it is not always clear just what is meant by the word penetration in this sense. GRINDING for size reduction affects the economics of many processes and products. It is essential as the first step in many industrial processes and is also a finishing step for materials with properties depending on particle size, such as talc, cement, and silica sand. Intermediate and fine grinding are vital operations in the U. S. cement industry, which is producing more than 250 million bbl of cement per year.1 Wear of the grinding media is a large part of the grinding operation cost. Problems encountered in grinding cement are so complex that evaluation of efficiency and economy of grinding media is difficult.2 It has been especially difficult to evaluate the relative effectiveness of different types of balls because there are no good testing techniques.

US underground mine production of nonfuel minerals was 153 million tons of crude ore in 1971, according to a recent US Bureau of Mines report compiled by Dravo Corp. Underground capacity includes all nonfuel mineral commodities and is distributed into three general categories: (1) metallic ores; (2) nonmetallic ores; and (3) construction materials, such as clay, sandstone, and limestone. All three categories are produced by a combination of open-pit and underground methods. While US underground mining represents only 5.9% of total domestic capacity, it is significant in the types of products produced. Domestic supplies of potash, trona, A lead, zinc, sulfur, and fluorspar are almost exclusively recovered from underground mines, as well as a significant portion of the gold, silver, molybdenum, and salt supply.
