THE introduction of mechanized mining has created a demand for long working faces. It has also prompted mining men to contest the old theory that longwall methods can be used only where roof conditions are ideal and where pack-wall material is plentiful. "Longwall" as used in this paper means "modified longwall," "semi-longwall," or any of the various "wall" or "long-face" methods of mining. Many mines are now using long conveyor faces that differ only in their methods of development, types of roof support and method of loading coal onto the conveyor. Some types of longwall operations are being carried on successfully under conditions heretofore considered impossible by men experienced in longwall mining. With possibly one or two exceptions, long-face methods in Alabama are a direct result of the need for lower mining costs. The advantages over room-and-pillar systems were clearly expressed in an article by Messrs. Fies and Lacy of the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation1 as follows: (1) increased tonnage per miner; (2) increased percentage of lump coal; (3) reduction in cost of development; (4) elimination of the cost of room yardage; (5) reduction in the cost of haulage, from ability to use larger cars; (6) reduction in the cost of machine cutting; (7) reduction in cost for tracks; (8) reduction in the cost of deadwork; (9) reduction in the cost of supervision. An attempt on the part of the operator to gain these, advantages by changing from room-and-pillar to longwall requires considerable courage, and credit should be given to those men who have done their bit to meet the competition of rival fuels. The initiatory problems to be solved are in reference to: (1) retreating or advancing system, (2) length of wall, (3) method of roof support, (4) method of entry development, (5) type of conveyor or loader, (6) hand vs. machine loading (onto conveyors), (7) hand vs. machine loading in entries, (8) control of roof pressure,

A study was made of the effect of surface-active agents an copper, gold, and zinc single crystals as well as polycrystalline aluminum. The study on coppw showed that the maximum effect of the surface -active agent occurred at the same concentration of the solution as that at which the rate of solution of the copper soap was the greatest. Surface -active agents did not affect the creep behavior of gold or freshly polished zinc specimens. The creel-, rate of zinc specimens in a solution containing a surface-active agent zoas always lower than that of freshly polished specimens. In previous papers1'2 it was reported that the surface played an important role in the plastic deformation of metals. By removing the surface layers of a crystal of aluminum by electrolytic polishing dur- ing tensile deformation, it was found that the slopes of Stages I, 11, and In were decreased and the extent of Stages I and I1 were increased when the rate of metal removal was increased. The results of the investigation of surface-active agents showed that changes in the slopes and extents of Stages I and II occurred when single crystals of aluminum were deformed in tension in a bath containing solutions of paraffin oil and stearic acid. The amount of change was a function of the concentration of stearic acid and the maximum effect occurred at a concentration of 0.002 mole per liter. These results were interpreted2 in terms of the rate of solution of metal soaps which form as a result of the chemical reaction between the surface-active agent and the metal. According to this interpretation, the "weakening" effect is controlled by the rate of solution of the soaps which depends upon the concentration of surface-active agents. At low concentrations, the number of metal soap molecules formed is low; at high concentrations, the rate of solubility is low, because of the high degree of saturation.

Over 8,000,000 people in the United States depend on natural gas for their cooking, heating and lighting service. This service has been made possible only by the investment of large amounts of capital in transportation lines connecting the gas wells to the various communities, thus combining a hazardous mining operation with a public utility service. The effect that making these lines " common carriers" will have on the present and future service to these 8,000,000 or more people is of far reaching ethical and economic importance, and deserves careful consideration. As an introduction, it must be conceded that: 1. Natural gas, although a mineral and obtained by a mining operation—with more uncontrollable and uncertain features to cope with than exist in the mining of coal or other minerals—when served to the public becomes a public utility service. 2. The governmental power to regulate all public utilities in the interests of the public cannot be successfully disputed. 3. Mere suggestion of inconvenience to the utility is wholly irrelevant, as it cannot be considered or allowed to influence in making a defense against governmental regulation. Unfortunately it is not generally appreciated that:.. I . 1. Legislative enactments are not necessarily laws, and cannot abrogate economic laws or alter engineering facts. 2. There is a clear distinction between "common carrier7' and "public utility," although the terms are frequently confused. "A common carrier is one who undertakes for hire to transport persons or goods, or both, from place to place for all persons indifferently, the term implying indifference as to whom shall be served, and an equal readiness to serve all who apply, in the order of their application." On the other hand, property becomes a "public utility" only "when for a particular purpose the public have a right to resort to the premises and make use of them." It is, therefore, important to note that not all public utilities can be regarded as common carriers. The U. S. Supreme Court has already

The natural gas industry is essentially a byproduct of the oil industry. When first discovered the gas was usually regarded as a nuisance, and even when found immediately associated with oil, or suspected to be so, it was customary to blow it freely into the air, in the hope that gas would shortly be replaced by a flow of oil. The early methods of production,' transportation, and utilization were neither economical nor efficient; the chief value of gas was based on its use as a fuel, with no regard to (1) its effect. upon the oil with which it was associated, (2) its importance as a lifting agent, or (3) to its possibilities for the manufacture of byproducts. The spread of scientific research among major gas and oil companies, manufacturers, and academic groups, has gradually brought recognition of the fact that many of the technical problems bearing on production, transportation and utilization are common to both the gas and the oil industry. A few of the problems that have received serious study, and from which highly gratifying results have been obtained, are: (1) gas measurement, (2) oil well and gas well capacity tests, (3) elimination of field waste, (4) design of pipe lines and compressor stations, (5) extraction of constituents which might interfere with the normal flow of gas through the line, (6) control of reservoir pressure, (7) estimation of reserves of both oil and gas, (8) control of water encroachment, (9) measurement of factors which influence fluid movement through sands, (10) solubility of gases in oils, (11) effect of dissolved gases upon the properties of the solution. These investigations have demonstrated that almost every problem relating to oil production also involves some phase of natural gas engineering. During the past 15 years the use of experimental methods for the discovery and measurement of obscure, influencing factors, which cannot be determined purely by hydrodynamic or thermodynamic analyses, have contributed much towards the progress made in solving the problems of the oil and gas industries. IN order to determine the magnitude of thermal conductivity changes resulting from alloying vanadium with titanium and a few other elements, several sam~les were PrePared and measured. The thermal conductivity -values reported herein in Table I were determined with an apparatus previously described.' As in recently reported2 determinations on uranium and uranium alloys, whose thermal conductivities are in the same range as vanadium," the accuracy of the values was checked by using synthetic sapphire." The error in the measurement is estimated to be '-3 pct or 0.003 cal sec-1 cm-l "C-1, whichever is larger. The vanadium used in preparing the samples was the calcium-reduced type and was supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. as 99.6+ pct pure. All alloying elements used in the preparations were 99+ pct pure. A nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace was used for melting the alloys and, without opening the furnace, each ingot was re-melted a number of times to insure homogeneity. The samples as prepared by the Armour Research Foundation were machined from as forged material without annealing. Acknowledgment The note is based on work performed under the auspices of the AEC. MAGMA COPPER COMPANY San Manuel Division The San Manuel Division of Magma Copper Company is located about 40 miles north of Tucson. Tons of ore milled in 1973 .were approximately 19 million at a rate of 63,000 tons per day. From this, about 42,600 tons of copper concentrate was produced as saying approximately 1.070 MoS2 and 28.5% Cu. As with many copper ores, the San Manuel ore contains a small amount of gold, but in this particular case, much of the gold follows the molybdenite. Separation of the molybdenite from the bulk sulfide concentrate by flotation produces a moly concentrate containing 9170 MoS2, just under 1.070 Cu, and 0.44 oz Au per ton. Cyanidation of this material for gold recovery is the only practice of its kind known to the authors of this Monograph. After thickening, the final moly concentrate is filtered for subsequent repulping with cyanide and lime. Gold dissolution takes place in three agitators in series with the pulp from the agitators being filtered in two stages in disc filters. Between filtration stages, the cake is repulped with barren solution. Filtrate from both filters is the pregnant solution. The Merrill-Crowe recovery unit is comprised of two solution tanks and the usual clarifying filter, vacuum tower, zinc dust feeder and Merrill precipitate press. Because of the presence of finely divided sooty chalcocite in the molybdenum concentrate, the cyanide consumption of 55 pounds per ton is extremely high. A compensating factor, however, is the low copper, moly concentrate produced. Precipitation of the gold from the highly copper-contaminated solution requires 0.56 pounds of zinc dust and 0.28 pounds of lead acetate per ton, high figures when compared to normal cyanidation practice. The Merrill- Crowe precipitate assays approximately 28.5% Cu, 8% Zn, 156 oz Au and 197 oz Ag per ton. The San Manuel cyanidation plant is an outstanding and innovative development.

Engineering design problems encountered by mining engineers often depend on the properties of natural granular materials such as soil, poorly consolidated sediment, fault gouge, and hydrothermally produced clay. The physical properties of such granular materials frequently are determined by the properties of silicate clays. In most mining applications, the clays are in contact with water. Swelling of clay due to water infiltration can interfere with underground support and haulage systems. Water-saturated clay on fault, fracture, and bedding planes causes slope failures in open pit mines, roof falls and heaving of weak underclays in coal mines. Water may be removed and cementing agents may be produced in clays by electrical methods. When an electrical potential gradient is applied to a charged capillary by two electrodes, water moves toward the negative electrode.1 This electrokinetic phenomena is known as electroosmosis and has been used to successfully dewater clay minerals which lack strength because of water. A consolidation effect occurs when the flow of water is accompanied by a decrease in water content. Electrochemical changes in the clay result in cementing and irreversible hardening. Theory A mathematical basis of electroosmotic phenomena is presented by Helmholtz.3 Smoluchowski5 modifies Helmholtz’ model and presents Eq. 1 to describe fluid flow velocity due to electroosmosis. For this formula, the zeta potential can be measured experimentally. The Helmholtz-Smoluchowski model is reasonably valid for clay aggregates with large pores saturated with fresh water or dilute electrolyte solutions.° An assumption used for Eq. 1 (equations are given Table 1; terms are defined in Table 2) is that the thickness of the electrical double layer surrounding the clay particles is small compared with the pore radii. Because this is generally not the case, Schmid7 presents Eq. 2. The volume charge density in the pore may be approximated from cation exchange capacity and porosity measurements. Casagrande8 offers a semi-empirical relationship (Eq. 3) for volume rate of electroosmotic flow and finds that k, is relatively constant for most clays with an average

Computer process analysis and control techniques are overcoming major hurdles to acceptance in the mineral industry. With the growing list of new advances characteristic of a rapidly maturing discipline, management of the companies on the leading edge are keenly aware of the advantages of using computer methods in process applications. Significant advancement is already evident in such technical areas as operations research, mathematical modeling, statistical methods, and computer-based procedural techniques. The early advances during the past decade are already documented in prior symposium proceedings of this series. Thus, the currently active areas of the advancing technology are emphasized here. This section deals with applications in pyrometallurgical and kiln processes. The two sections which follow deal with concentrating operations from two points of view: 1) mathematical modeling, and 2) on-line control. In the metallurgical field, emphasis on developing effective process computer applications for the steel industry began in the late 1950's. Simulation techniques also received substantial attention. The steel industry was soon joined by the cement industry in the development of computer methods for process applications. Computers were in use for feed-material blending and kiln control in the early 1960's. Computer development in other pyro processes, such as aluminum reduction and glass-making, also marked significant advances by the mid 1960's. Aluminum smelter potline control is a nearly universal application at this point, and the development of glass furnace computer process control represented a recent important technical advance in digital control techniques. Steel Hot strip rolling was the earliest significant process computer application in the metallurgical industry. Computer control of rolling mill operations is now a steel mill standard component, particularly in plants newly placed into production. 1, 2 Initial computer installations principally carried out procedural routines in setting mill clearances for production lot control. Recent developments are leading toward feedback control based on mathematical model techniques. 3

A method is outlined for taking into account variation in chemical potential of both components in evaluating capillary effects at growing interfaces. The results are compared with experiment, and seem to be in reasonably good accord for Widman-statten ferrite growing in austenite. ENERY pointed out that during the steady-state growth of phases with a rather small radius of curvature at their advancing edge capillarity cannot be neglected. By proper application of the Laplace equation a correction must be made to the activity gradients down which diffusion occurs. Subsequent workers have concerned themselves with attempts to evaluate specific cases by the use and modification of the principles laid down by Zener.2-5 To solve the problem in its simplest form it is necessary to assume thermodynamic equilibrium at the interface and to select some criterion which will allocate the available free energy between reversible and irreversible processes. Zener chose to assume that the division should be made such that the new phase grew at the maximum rate. Other workers have used the same2,3 or different assumptions, e.g., maximum rate of free-energy dissipation,4 minimum rate of entropy production.5 Li6 has proposed that the "thermokinetic potential" should be a minimum at steady state. The purpose of this presentation is to note that most prior treatments have considered variations due to capillarity only in the chemical potential of the mobile constituent, and that a more consistent treatment must involve a consideration of the variation of chemical potentials of both solute -and sol- vent in a binary system.* As an example, the way in which this arises for ferrite growing from austenite may be illustrated by reference to Fig. l(a). Most of the petroleum produced in New York State is obtained by flooding; that is, water drive. No important oil fields have been developed during the past 30 years, nor does there seem much hope that the productive oil areas will be substantially enlarged in the future. There is some prospect that additional supplies may be obtained by deeper drilling, but deep tests for gas to the Oriskany sandstone in some of the oil-producing areas have been without results so far as any discoveries of oil are concerned. Although the flooding method had been made legal in 1919, and some floods had been in operation previous to 1921, that year marks the beginning of a rapid increase in oil production by the new method. The flush production of oil in New York was in 1882, shortly after the discovery of the Richburg pool in Allegany County. The oil production in that year amounted to 6,685,000 bbl. The 1937 production of 5,478,000 bbl. was the largest since the flush production of 55 years ago. The effectiveness of water-flooding for increasing oil production from the old New York fields is shown in Table 1. An examination as to irregularity of wear around the nose of the Witherbee tuyeres showed a section through the nose near the top as per Fig. 1, and a section only a half-inch beyond as per Fig. 2. The molten iron flowing over the nose of the tuyere had melted off the metal until the water in the tuyere prevented further melting. These tuyeres have a division in the annular water-space (see Fig. 2) to turn the current of water at the top, and the watersupply pipe is carried to within 1 inch of the nose. The constant supply of cold water in the nose of the tuyere kept it well cooled and preserved. But half an inch on the other side of the division the metal had melted off, as is shown by Fig. 1. There was no means of effecting a circulation at this point so long as the water was discharged from the butt of the tuyere. A pipe having been placed on the discharge-side of the division, the same as on the supply-side, in order to secure a circulation of the water at the nose on the discharge-side, it was found that the metal did not burn off. The nose being found to give out at the bottom, a division was placed in the annular water-space at the bottom, terminating 1 inch from the nose. This made a sharp current of circulation in the nose at the bottom, and prevented the burning of the metal there. A positive circulation at the nose, top and bottom, is a necessity with the present fast driving of furnaces, and prolongs the life of the tuyeres. Phosphorus combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent, grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal Industry' gives the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 30 1b.; finely powdered coal, 10 1b. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail variations are covered by patents, such as those of L. A. Jeffs3 and H. A. Webster.4 Among the objections to this method of producing phosphor-copper are the large amounts of raw material and resulting slag to be handled, and the difficulty of getting a satisfactory fusion. S. Skowronski5 found that at 1300' C. (2372' F.) it was impossible to get a good fusion

THE success of various operations in the manufacture of optical glass depends, in a large measure, on the ability to maintain proper heat control. A good pyrometer system is, therefore, a very necessary part of the equipment needed. Men of long experience in dealing with high temperatures, who have acquired through constant practice the ability of judging approximate temperatures by means of color, are undoubtedly valuable, but even the most competent are not as reliable as a good pyrometer system. They admit that their ability to judge accurately varies from day to day and that their judgment is affected considerably by the condition of the sky, whether it is clear or cloudy. Besides, where it is a matter of only a few weeks to train a man to operate a pyrometer system, it takes about as many years to train him to judge temperatures by the state of incandescence. The pyrometer outfit in use in the glass plant of the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. consists of the following: Platinum elements, optical pyrometers; base-metal elements, indicators, potentiometers, and recording pyrometers. Platinum Elements and Optical Pyrometers.-Temperature control in - the melting operation is of such great importance that it is very desirable to know the exact temperatures, relative temperatures being of little value. The use of the platinum element is to determine the rate of heating or cooling of the furnace. The platinum couple is installed in either the crown or the wall of the furnace. It is placed first in a porcelain protecting tube and this is placed in a permanently fixed fireclay tube projecting from 1 1/2 to 2 in. into the fire-chamber. It has been found impractical to use the platinum couple for determining exact temperatures of the melting furnace, for the platinum element deteriorates rather rapidly at the high temperatures used, 2500° to 2700° F. Direct determination of the concentration of carbon dioxide in solid hydrate requires a difficult separation to be made. Therefore, this research resorted to the measurement of the temperature and pressure at which specific mixtures of methane and carbon diox- ide would form hydrates. From the equilibrium constants previously mentioned for methane, it is possible to compute the equilibrium constant for carbon dioxide, without measurement of the composition of the solid phase. THE problem of the metalliferous veins has always been an outstanding one in the science of ore deposits. In recent years interest has been stimulated by Spurr, who maintains that veins have consolidated from magmas that have densities as great as the densities of ordinary rocks. Lindgren published a noteworthy paper1 in 1926, in which he supports the theory that veins are deposited chiefly by hot waters. Lindgren's paper was discussed by Singewald, Spurr, Kemp, Anderson, Colony, Bateman, Porter and others. The discussion, in the main, was centered on the interpretation of fragments that are included in veins. This paper also treats the problems of fragments in veins and includes a reply to a review by Spurr2 of a bulletin by Larsen, and myself published by the United States Geological Survey on the geology and ore deposits of Creede, Colorado. Mineral veins containing fragments of the wall rock are common. At many places the fragments are completely, isolated, one from the other, and are entirely surrounded by vein matter. It has been stated that the vein matter around the fragments was heavier than the fragments and that the latter were floated in a magma. J. E. Spurr, who is the leading advocate of this hypothesis,4 urges that normal mineral veins were deposited by solutions heavy enough to float fragments of the country rock, and it is mainly on this relation that he bases his theory that veins are deposited by solidification of magmas. If it can be shown that vein-forming solutions have a specific gravity greater than rock (2.77), one is justified in regarding them as true magmatic solutions. It is shown later in this, paper,. however, that at Lead, S. D., water not more highly concentrated' than ordinary drinking water is depositing vein matter around fragments of schist and of steel in such a manner that the fragments are completely isolated and completely surrounded by the mineral cement.

THE object of this experiment was to obtain a usable set of field curves for determining the susceptibility of rocks with the vertical magnetometer. The need often arises for determining the susceptibility of rocks in the field in order to interpret magnetic anomalies obtained. This is particularly true when diamond drilling has been done and the relation to the surface rocks of the samples taken is desired. Many methods of measuring rock susceptibility have been developed, but in general they require careful shaping of the sample or pulverizing it in addition to delicate laboratory measuring instruments designed for the purpose. The requirements for a practical method for the determination of susceptibilities are as follows: I. There should be as little alteration as possible of the specimen. 2. A minimum of time should be required in the preparation of the specimen and the calibration of the equipment. 3. The equipment used should be portable. 4. An accuracy within the limits of the survey at hand should be obtainable. 5. A means of measuring the remnant magnetism should be available. LABORATORY PROCEDURE With these ideas in mind, the problem was approached in the manner in which Koenigsberger1 developed his method using the principle of the electrical theory of images of Lord Kelvin and applying it to the magnetic case. This solution of the problem states that the apparent change [ ] in the magnetic field intensity due to the proximity of a specimen is given by: [ ] Where k is the susceptibility of the specimen, m the strength of the pole of the needle, and a its distance from the surface of the specimen, as shown in Fig. I.2 This relation is true only for an infinite body and corrections are necessary for a finite body. Koenigsberger used in his work a variometer of special design. He suggested that a Schmidt vertical balance or horizontal magnetometer, as well as some other instrument, might be used. Peche1bronn.—So far Pechelbronn is the only producing district. Figures are given in Table 2 covering the main features of the field, but these figures call for the following remarks: First, Pechelbronn should not' be considered as a single unit, it appears, but as a succession of small oil fields, each of which is affected by very variable conditions. Consequently, certain figures concerning production per acre, production per acre-foot, pressure conditions and thicknesses of oil sands would be so misleading that they have been omitted here. Second, as regards production methods, attention is drawn especially to the fact that 42 per cent of the oil is extracted by the use of shafts and galleries and the remainder by pumping wells. Exploitation, formerly confined to Oligocene sands, has been extended recently to Jurassic and Triassic oil-bearing formations. Gabian.—This small oil field, discovered in 1924, is almost exhausted. Exploitation to date is restricted to three wells. There were no drilling activities in 1933. Exploration.—During 1933, two exploration holes have been started in France. The first, in the vicinity of Lavelanet (Ariége) on the Dreuille anticline, has reached the depth of 2400 ft,.; the second, in the Autun Permian Basin, is drilling at 1300 feet. Northern Africa Morocco.—Drilling operations have been on a large scale in Morocco. In the Gharb district (Souk el Arba area), the deepest well was abandoned in 1933 at 7014 ft. Small irregular productive horizons were encountered in the Miocene at shallow depth, oil and gas showing in the Eocene, but no commercial oil field has been discovered. In the Djebel Tselfat, near Petitjean, a small production of oil was obtained from a Jurassic horizon. In the meantime deeper formations are being explored and a new structure in the vicinity is being tested. In Eastern Morocco, a well is drilling near Taza. Production in Morocco, about 2400 bbl., has not been listed on Table 2, owing to its origin—exploration wells.

THE increased moisture due to water¬spraying for coal dust control is of interest even for mines from which the coal is to be wet-washed before screening, because in many cases wet coal dust materially decreases the loading efficiency of men an equipment at the faces. It also causes serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-receive moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper t cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confine to discussion and data on (r) percentages c dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proven satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. SIZE AND PERCENTAGE OF COAL DUST The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies a coal dust all bituminous coal passing 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening; The percentage of such dust to be found is ROM coal, of course, varies widely wit. the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 2o-mesh X o dust in 3/8 in. X o-sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

The serious objections to the Leblanc soda process may be enumerated as follows: 1st. The total loss of sulphur employed, equal to about one-third of soda produced. Various processes have been proposed to regain this sulphur, but none have come into practical operation on a large scale. 2d. The great balk of waste products, equal to nearly twice the amount of soda, which forms a serious annoyance about the works. 3d. The complicated series of operations necessary. 4th. The large amount of labor and fuel required. 5th. The prodoction of noxious gases which necessitate extensive condensing arrangements. 6th. The large capital necessary for the . erection and maintenance of the plant, These objections have long been recognized, and many attempts have been made during the last thirty or forty years, to discover and introduce a cheaper and more direct method for the manufacture of this important staple. The reaction between bicarbonate of ammonia and common salt, whereby bicarbonate of soda, insoluble in a solution of chloride of ammonium, is precipitated, has been closely studied for the last twentyfour years, on account of its simplicity and the purity of the product it affords. This ammonia-soda process is now so far developed, that while it is not in position to entirely replace the Leblanc process, yet it can successfully compete with it where the conditions and localities are favorable. The advantages of the ammonia-soda process may be summed up as follows : 1st. It is independent of the essential agent in the Leblanc process, via., sulphuric acid, and hence can be established in those localities where salt is abundant, and yet where sulphuric acid could not be made, or where it could not be transported profitably. 2d. The ammonia-soda process being a " wet" process, the evaporation of salt brines to obtain the solid salt required in the Leblanc process, is rendered unnecessary. 3d. The direct conversion of chloride of sodium into bicarbonate of soda, which can readily be converted into the maketable monocar-
