AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

M. A. Hanna is investigating a nickel prospect near Riddle, Ore. Drilling is under way and a prospect shaft is being put down to obtain samples for metallurgical test work. The deposit is favorably situated for open pit mining. The property had been drilled previously by the USGS and by Freeport Sulphur Co. A $75,000 laboratory pilot plant will begin operations this year to determine if economic beneficiation of a deposit of low grade iron ore, being examined by M. A. Hanna in the Iron River, Mich., district, is possible. Three miles east of Randville 2560 acres of land have been acquired, and drilled, over the last 2 years. The ore is reported to be 34 pat Fe.

WHETHER the carbides associated with bainite precipitate from the ferritic component of bainite, as originally suggested by Davenport and Bain, or from the adjacent austenite at aus-tenite:ferrite boundaries, as proposed by Hultgren, 2 remains in dispute.3-5 A recent metallographic investigation in this laboratory has shown that the bainitic carbides formed in a plain carbon hypo-eutectoid steel nucleate entirely within ferrite at higher reaction temperatures3 and in both ferrite and austenite at lower temperatures." The present investigation was undertaken to ascertain the effects of alloying elements on the nucleation sites selected by bainitic carbides. Slip on (11221 planes, which do not contain a close-packed direction, has been identified on crystals strained at —190°C. Evidence is also presented to show that (1071) pyramidal slip is a mode of deformation at 25ºC in a limited orientation range. On account of the possibility of isolating carbides in steel it is generally assumed that the electrode potential of iron carbide is more noble than that of ferrite.1,2,3,4,5 Differences from 0.032 V1 to 0.4 V4 have been recorded. However, it is important to realize that the more noble behavior of cementite in relation to ferrite is not an issue of thermodynamics but of reaction kinetics. ThE interpretation of X-ray and electron diffraction data obtained in plastic deformation studies of hcp a titanium requires knowledge of angular relationships between crystallographic planes and directions. Rarey el 01.&apos; have calculated both interplanar angles and angles between directions for a number of c/a ratios. This information, although useful for approximate applications, does not provide exact data for specific hcp metals. Recently, Hu2 has tabulated interplanar angles specifically for hcp titanium. The present study augments the existing data on titanium by providing the angles between plane normals and rational crystallographic directions in addition to interplanar and interdirectional angles. Loose compacts of strained and annealed stainless-steel powders were sintered at various temperatures and times to determine the effect of residual strains on the sintering behavior. The atomized powders were prepared by annealing, ball milling, and rean-nealing. The residual strains and domain size were determined by a Fourier analysis of X-ray diffvaction dala. The specimens were prepared by siwzultaneously sintering cylinders of both strained and unstrained powder. The evaluation of the sintered compacts included density measurements, metallographic examinations, and analyses of X- ray diffraction data. The results of these studies reveal a definite increase in sintered density and sintering rate for the strained powders. THE pressure compacting of metal powders causes deformation of the particles, mechanical interlocking, and increased contact area. After the deformation, severe residual strains remain in these particles. The subsequent contributions of these strains to the sintering process have been considered to be negligible, since the recovery and recrystallization temperatures usually occur prior to the temperature required for the sintering process. Sintering is con-sidered to be the process by which the powders are transformed into solid compacts at temperatures below their melting points. The sintering operation for stainless steel usually takes place in the range of 2050" to 2400°F (0.84 to 0.95 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point or liquidus temperature) while the temperature required for recovery is approximately 1800°F (0.75 T,). However, it has been shown for several metal powders that densification becomes significant in the range of 0.35 to 0.45 T,.&apos; It is the purpose of this study to determine what effect residual strains have upon the sintering behavior of stainless-steel compacts. Loose compacts were selected for study in order to isolate the strain contributions and eliminate the variables inherent in sintering of pressure-formed compacts. Additional variables were minimized by using only one mesh size, one composition, one particle shape, and also by simultaneously sintering both types of powder. Very little work has been carried out previous to the present study to delineate the effect of strains on sintering behavior. Lenel et 01.2 observed that residual stresses in copper compacts caused shrinkage at comparatively low temperatures. Delisle3 loose-sintered ball-milled electrolytic iron and observed that bonding among particles began at a lower temperature as compared to the behavior of annealed powder. Increased densification of ball-milled oxide powders has also been noted.4&apos;5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Powder Preparation. The powder used for this study was a commercial-type 316L stainless steel made by the atomization process. A typical chemical analysis is: C- 0.025 pct Mo- 2.2 pct Cr-18.6 pct Ni-12.5 pct Fe—Balance The atomizing process is essentially the rapid freezing of liquid droplets. This nonequilibrium cooling causes coring to occur and two distinct phases are present within the solid particle, the austenitic phase and the ferritic phase. Due to the presence of this ferritic phase, the particles tended to fracture as well as become cold-worked during the subsequent ball-milling operation. One of the most important problems facing the steel industry at the present time is that of maintaining at a minimum the sulphur content of many grades of steel where sulphur is known to have harmful effects On both quality and yield. The present outlook in this struggle to reduce the amount of sulphur in steel is rather gloomy since the sulphur content of the raw materials available in the United States is gradually rising, with little relief in sight. A flow sheet of sulphur in the steel process is shown in Fig I. The values used here were obtained by averaging coke oven and blast furnace data at No. 5 furnace in Cleveland and are considered typical for high top pressure practice. The sulphur evolved in the blast furnace top gas was obtained by difference and since the amount is relatively small, little significance should be attached to this particular value. From Fig I it is apparent, however, that coals used in the production of metallurgical coke represent by far the largest single source of sulphur in steel-making. As an indication of the decrease in quality of these coals as regards sulphur content the weighed average annual sulphur analysis of the coals supplied to two different steel plants, since 1925, is plotted in Fig 2} The sharp rise since 1940 is strikingly apparent. Another indication of this trend is found in estimates of coking coal reserves. Thus in the case of Pittsburgh seam coals available in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pa. as of Jan. 1937 only 25 pct of the coal reserves would contain less than 1.50 pct sulphur after washing.2.3 Many of these lower sulphur reserves have been seriously depleted in recent years because of accelerated war demands. still another demonstration of the increasing sulphur content of coals on a country-wide basis is found in a report by the Bureau of Mines4 which shows a steady increase in the sulphur content of coke made in the United States. It should be noted that this increase continues in spite of the wider use of coal washing in recent years. Sulphur occurs in coal in three forms, pyritic (FeS2), organic sulphur, and a small amount of sulphate sulphur (CaS04). The sulphur is subsequently found in the coke in combination with carbonaceous material of is composition and as calcium and iron sulphides&apos; In considering the general problem of sulphur elimination, the Republic Steel Corp. was interested in determining which, if either, of the two major forms of sulphur in coal contributes the greater portion of sulphur to the coke. Single crystal Mo-Re alloys (99.99+ purity), grown by electron bombardment floating zone heating, were deformed in tension at temperatures from -196° to +200°C. At -196oC, Mo-6 pet Re and Mo-20 pct Re alloys deform by slip on systems of the type (101) [1ll]. Above-78oC, the operative slip system is of the type (112) [111], (101) [1ll], or (211) [1ll], depending upon orientation. Mo-39 pct Re alloys deform by twinning and slip at all test temperatures with a (112) [111] type twinning system. Critical resolved shear stress for slip and twinning is calculated as a function of composition and temperature, and the mechanical properties compared with those of less Pure polycrystalline alloys. HEXAGONAL close-packed rhenium, c/a = 1.615, is highly soluble in molybdenum. The bee molybdenum-rich solid solution extends to approximately 42 at. pet Re* at 2500°C,&apos; Fig. 1. Recent work on polycrystalline alloys has shown conclusively that the addition of rhenium to molybdenum improves both the fabricability and the low-temperature ductility.2"5 Similar behavior is observed for W-Re and Cr-Re alloys.5 Initially, Geach and Hughes2 found that the Mo-30 pct Re alloy could be cold rolled to approximately 90 pct reduction before the onset of cracking. The remarkable effect of the rhenium was later confirmed by Jaffee et al. 3-5 with an optimum condition of maximum strength combined with maximum ductility at the Mo-35 pet composition. At higher rhenium contents, the ductility was severely impaired due apparently to the presence of brittle tetragonal s phase, Fig. 1. In the Mo-35 pet Re alloy, at least 110 ppm (parts per million) oxygen could be tolerated before cold workability was reduced. By comparison, the corresponding tolerance figure in unalloyed molybdenum is ~ 10 ppm. The effect of rhenium was considered in terms of: 1) a reduction in oxygen solubility in the lattice; 2) a redistribution of intergranular oxide from grain boundary films to isolated spheres; and 3) the promotion of twinning as a further mode of plastic deformation. Paradoxically, twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron and the silicon irons.6&apos;7 Work to date has been restricted to are-melted and powder metallurgy polycrystalline material of ~ 99.9 pet purity. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of determining the mode and crystallography of plastic deformation of a series of bee Mo-Re alloy single crystals over a wide temperature range from -196o to +200°C. Using high-purity zone-melted material (~ 99.99 + pet purity), the specific role of rhenium in the molybdenum lattice may be understood more fully since effects due to grain boundaries and oxide redistribution will be absent. At the same time, the study provides a comparison of single and polycrystalline deformation behavior. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A) Preparation and Purity of Single Crystals. Evidence has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its (&apos;Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,l-l2 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends— including coals numbered I to 55B, inclusive —which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or 18-in. cylindrical retorts.13 In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from 0.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the 90 coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

The development of texture in copper and brass (15 pct Zn by weight) rolled at room temperature and in copper rolled at -196°C has been followed by determination of pole figures for various degrees of reduction. The concurrent development in microstructure has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. For low deformations, the texture in brass, and in copper rolled at -196°C, is the same as the texture in copper rolled at room temperature. The difference in texture does not show until 50 pct reduction. At the same reduction at which the difference in texture appears, mechanical twinning starts in brass and low-temperature rolled copper. Nevertheless, Wassermann&apos;s twinning theory is found to be incompatible with the present resulls. All fcc metals and alloys develop, by heavy rolling, one or the other of two types of texture, classified for convenience as copper type and brass type, or possibly a &apos;(mixed" texture representing an intermediate stage between the two types. The pure fcc metals, except silver, develop copper-type texture by rolling at room temperature. Silver and many alloys, including brass with more than 10 pct Zn, develop brass-type texture.&apos; By rolling at low temperatures a transition in texture from copper type to brass type has been observed for copper of commercial purity.2&apos;3 It is generally accepted that there is a correlation between the type of texture developed and the stacking fault energy. Metals and alloys having fcc structure develop brass-type texture when rolled at room temperature if the stacking fault energy is low, whereas those with higher stacking fault energies have copper-type texture.2 Thus, the difference in stacking fault energy must cause a difference in deformation mechanism responsible for the difference in texture. Of the numerous theories advanced concerning the nature of this difference in deformation mechanism, four seem to be of current interest. Smallman and Greeen,2 Dillamore and Roberts,4 and Dillamore5 refer to the fact that cross slip more easily takes place in a material with a higher stacking fault energy and suggest that the copper-type texture is developed by deformation with extensive cross slip whereas the brass-type texture is developed by deformation without cross slip. Haessner6 has advanced the theory that the copper-tye texture is developed by a combination of normal {111} slip and slip on other planes, mainly 1100). Thus his theory, like the theory above, proposes an additional deformation mode for the formation of the copper-type texture. Contrary to this, wassermann7 and Ahlborn et al.8 believe that the copper-type texture is obtained by normal slip. In their opinion mechanical twins will change a copper texture into a brass texture. For this reason it is suggested that the brass-type texture is developed when, in addition to normal {111}(110) slip, mechanical twinning is present. None of these theories are, however, supported by direct experimental evidence. In a recent experiment Hu et al.9 have followed the development of rolling texture in copper and brass. The deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl onto amorphous substrates has been studied, with attention being paid to the specific effects of the physical and chemical nature of the substrate and to the effect of oxygen on the crystal morphology. With substrates having microscratches or etch lines, nu-cleation was observed to occur preferentially at these surface features. Flame polishing of the substrate surfaces was found to remove any regularity in preferred nucleation sites. Nucleation was observed to occur less readily on substrates having relatively low surface energies, e.g., Teflon and carbon, than on materials having relatively high surface energies such as fused silica. At low oxygen concentrations [Ni(CO)4/O2 > 54 x 1031, apparently pure and well-formed nickel crystals were observed to nucleate and grow irrespective of the presence of oxygen. At higher concentrations of oxygen, a secondary growth process, dependent upon oxygen concentration and resulting in a gradual change in crystal morphology, was observed. It is concluded that the influence of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel is determined by the relative kinetics of the various possible reactions, and that under the experimental conditions employed the 0-Ni interaction occurs at some nucleation or prenuclea-tion stage. THE purpose of the research on crystal nucleation in chemical vapor deposition as described in this paper has been twofold: 1) to examine some effects arising from the use of amorphous substrates, and 2) to study the specific effects of oxygen on the nucleation and growth of nickel in a nickel carbonyl-carbon monoxide system. The nickel-nickel carbonyl system was chosen for study for several reasons: 1) nickel films are of potential interest in electronic technology, and 2) the deposition can be carried out at moderate temperatures, thus making possible detailed study of the processes occurring and the use of a variety of substrate materials (including some which melt at relatively low temperatures). Fairly well-characterized chemical kinetics and a broad background of information are available on the py-rolysis reactions and on the mechanisms of Ni-O interactions. NUCLEATION AND GROWTH THEORY The theoretical background for the analysis of nucleation and growth by vapor deposition for a one-component system (physical vapor deposition) and the problems encountered therein have been reviewed by Hirth and pound.&apos; More recently Mande12 has indicated the difficulties of applying such theory to chemical systems. One of the major problems involved is the possible multiplicity of chemical reactions and deposition routes. For example, those reactions which are probably of significance in a discussion of the pyrolytic deposition of nickel from nickel carbonyl under the conditions of the present experimental work are illustrated in Fig. 1. As is true with most cases of chemical deposition, many of the quantitative data necessary for a complete analysis of the system are either not available or not directly measurable. However, with the present system, sufficient data are available for a discussion of nucleation and growth on a qualitative basis.
