INTRODUCTION Economic evaluation of an open pit mine is similar to the economic analysis of any major investment project in any industry. It requires (1) taking into account all of the costs and revenues that are estimated to be incurred over the economic life of the project; (2) crediting the project with all the tax savings and tax credits that will be realized over the project life from tax deductions and credits related to various project costs; (3) charging the project with all taxes to be paid on taxable income over the project life; and (4) properly accounting for the time value of money for all project costs, revenues, taxes, tax savings, and tax credits when making the overall project economic evaluation. These considerations must be taken into account for any valid method of economic analysis such as discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) or net present value (NPV) analyses. All economic analyses fall into one of two categories. ( 1 ) comparison of income-producing alternatives, or (2) comparison of service-producing alternatives. The analysis of alternatives in either of these categories can be made by using correctly any of five basic economic evaluation approaches which are. ( 1 ) present value, annual value, (3) future value, (4) rate of return (ROR) , and (5 ) break-even analysis. Of these evaluation techniques, DCFROR and NPV analyses are used most widely for evaluating income-producing alternatives while present worth cost and equivalent annual cost analyses are used most often for the evaluation of service-producing alternatives. In this chapter income- producing alternative analysis is emphasized, so DCF- ROR and NPV are utilized for evaluating the case studies presented.

The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.' There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G. A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. 11. The First, or Coarsest, Section of the Field. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a definite ratio. This paper discusses some of the fundamental physical and chemical characteristics of coal in Illinois that affect its preparation for the market. At the present time preparation consists almost entirely of sizing and hand-picking. The washing of coal has almost entirely disappeared from the state. This is a rather startling fact when one considers that in the year 1908 Illinois outranked all other states in the quantity of coal washed and a few years later, in 1912, 85 washing plants were reported. Two reasons are apparent for this change. One, which is probably the most important, is that immense areas of comparatively clean coal were opened; the other is that many of the early washing plants were inefficient, so that washed coal was looked upon with disfavor in many trade centers. Objectives of Operators Some of the outstanding preparation aims being given due consideration by operating men are: 1. The greatest possible production of lump and domestic sizes which bring in the market at least $1 per ton more than the fine sizes or screenings. 2. Efficient screen sizing with as little breakage as is consistent with economical operation. 3. The removal of extraneous ash and sulfur. 4. Utilization of low-priced screenings. 5. Suppression of dust in domestic coal shipments. Preparation Underground To get the greatest possible production of the larger sizes, preparation must start at the face. Improvements in blasting and loading have increased the sizes larger than 2 in. by as much as 20 per cent. at some mines. Copper precipitates from a iron as fcc E phase without formation of intermediate compounds. In the first stage of the precipitation, spherical particles with diameters < 100A are formed at a high rate. During the second stage, the particles grow at a rate given by Zener&apos;s equation for growth of a spherical precipitate. In the third stage, growth is slower. Rod-shaped particles form after long aging times at 700°C. Maximum strengthenzng was observed at the beginning of the second step of precipitation. During plastic deformation of the aggregate, particles appear to deform initially by twinning. THE work discussed herein was part of a study of precipitation of substitutional elements from a iron. Copper was chosen as one of these substitutional elements because it has about the same atomic size as a iron, and does not form an intermetallic compound with iron. The data on the iron-copper system then available were summarized by Daniloff1 several years ago. The solubility of copper in a iron has been determined by electrical conductivity measurements,2 lattice parameter measurements,3 and by saturating thin iron foils with copper and determining the copper content.4 The results of the three investigations do not agree very well, but the value of 2.4 wt pct for the maximum solubility at 840°C seems to be the most reliable,4 Fig. 1. A device developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for the detection and quenching of coal mine explosions suffers from the inability to discriminate between the light emitted from hydrocarbon combustion and that emitted by electrical sparks and miner&apos;s cap lamps1. Since the quenchant device is activated by an internal explosive charge, the possibility of serious injury to nearby personnel demands a detector which can reject false signals. Described herein is a detector which can provide a rapid response signal upon the emission of radiation from hydrocarbon combustion and concurrently reject spurious signals from such sources as sparks and cap lamps. It was suggested that a detector might be developed to operate on the principle of monitoring the radiation intensity emitted from two separate spectral regions and ratioing the intensities2. A series of experiments was conducted for combustion of methane-air mixtures which demonstrate the ability of such a detector to discriminate between combustion and spurious signals. Experimental Apparatus A cylindrical (3.8 in. diam by 12 in.) stainless-steel shock tube test section was used as a combustion chamber. The test section was equipped with quartz windows (2 in. diam) on either side, a piezoelectric pressure transducer, and two steel electrodes. A 10-kv capacitor discharged across the electrodes provided a submicrosecond duration spark to ignite the gas mixture within. The desired partial pressures of methane and air were obtained by using a Wallace and Tiernan 0-800 mm Hg pressure gauge with which pressures could be determined to an accuracy of % mm Hg. All tests were conducted with a total pressure of 1 atm in the chamber. To

When the electrical system for a surface or open pit mine is designed, four major considerations should be satisfied in the following order: safety, reliability, flexibility, and cost. Careful planning initially will make expansion for future growth economical as well as possible without extended shutdown of operations. Electrical requirements in surface and open pit mining can be divided into three categories: main substation, plant power, and pit distribution. These systems are integral to each other, but will be dealt with separately here. 11.2-1. Main Substation. A main substation for a mining operation may vary from a 500 kva transformer supplying 480-v power to motor-driven pumps and conveyors, to a 50,000 kva substation serving a large beneficiation plant or a large strip mining operation. Regardless of size, it should be designed with the realization that a failure of the main substation will totally shut down the operation (Fig. 11.2-1.). Location of a main substation usually is a compromise between expense of running the incoming high-voltage transmission lines and the voltage drop of long secondary runs. Based on a geological survey for immediate and future areas of excavation, the main substation should be located as near to the center of load as possible. The site should be out of the blasting area, readily accessible to authorized personnel, and situated where prevailing winds will keep it free from dust or snow. DISCONNECTS AND OVERLOAD PROTECTION. The main substation should have a primary disconnecting device-either a pole top gang-operated switch and fuses of adequate interrupting capacity or, preferably, an oil circuit breaker with properly coordinated relay protection.

An attempt to duplicate Rawdon and Mutchler&apos;s experiments showing a reversal of hardness with continued rolling gave negative results, indicating that the phenomenon is not general but depends, probably, on local conditions of rolling. IN A recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchler1 gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between-the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. This is an exceptionally interesting phenomenon, if it occurs under all conditions of rolling, and would have an important bearing on the practice of cold

The constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. He devised methods for taking cooling curves on alloys under high pressures and for the microscopic observation of alloys which contained liquid mercury as a structural constituent at ordinary temperatures. The compositions of the intermediate phases were confirmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston2 and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 2760 C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower temperatures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in the right region. Preparation of Alloys The silver used in the present investigation was supplied by the United States Metals Refining Co. through the courtesy of the Committee on Industrial Uses of Silver and, since a complete spectrographic and chemical analysis was furnished, no attempt was made to purify it or to further establish the impurities present. The analyses reported by the company are shown in Table 1. Milligan4 has found that the magnesium content is probably less than 0.0005 per cent.

In China there are more than 30 coal fields menaced by karst-confined water. In the north and east of China there are many collieries which mine coal seams of the Carboniferous and Permian Systems, which are above the Ordovician limestone (general thickness is 500-600 meters). Ordovician limestone is full of karst fissures, contains a lot of water under high pressure (15-65 kg/cm2) near the commercial coal seams (20-80 meters), the water easily infiltrates the thin lime- stone at the point of the structure crevice, so water-irruptions from the floor are the main source of water-related disasters in these coal fields. According to the statistics there were more than 300 accidents of all kinds of water-irruptions from the floor in these fields since the beginning of their development. It is of great significance in developing coal production in the eastern part of China to solve the problem of safe mining of the seams menaced by the karst-confined water of the Ordovician limestone. The research on this subject consists of three parts: (1) investigating the geological structure and hydrogeological conditions of each mine of the mining area; (2) researching the mechanism of water-irruptions from the floor and proposing reliable methods to predict and monitor; (3) improving the mining system and proposing a mining plan with safety precautions against water-caused accidents. The chief task is to research the mechanisms involved and to discover the causes and conditions of the phenomenon. The authors have obtained some findings on this subject in the last five years, making use of the comprehensive observation and research system, which will be discussed under three headings.

INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm) . The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

The energy and force of interaction between a crack and a slip band have been calculated. When the distance between the crack and the slip band is greater than the dislocation spacing of- the slip band, the force on the cgrack is perpendicular to the slip band. The energy needed to propagate a crack against this force can be lawe enough to pevmit crack propagation parallel to noncleavage planes. SEVERAL recent experiments have demonstrated the occurrence of crack-slip band interaction in ionic crystals having a NaC1-type structure. Stokes, Johnston, and Lil have studied the nucleation and growth of cracks in MgO. From their observations, they conclude that slip bands have the ability to halt and stabilize cleavage crack nuclei. Gilman2 has shown that a crack, propagating along a (100) cleavage plane in a previously deformed LiF crystal, tends, at certain points within the crystal, to switch to (110) planes. He reasons that plastic deformation reduces the cohesive energy of the (110) planes below that of the (1130) planes, making possible (110) crack propagation. Keh3 has demonstrated that when indentations are made in MgO, crkcks form along (110) planes at the indentations. Gilman2 attributes the formation of these cracks to plastic cieformation. There is some doubt as to the formation of cracks on (110) planes. Kuznetsov4 in his discussion of crack propagation in rock salt, shows that splitting along (110) planes requires 1.76 times as much energy as splitting along a stepped (100) surface. The iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows: (1) no preliminary treatment is required; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained; (3) it is economical. On the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lead assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method" for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, dud to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have an objectionable effect on the results. WITH portions of two coal basins within its borders and a few scattered fields already developed, the question arises: What is the future of Ken-tucky as an oil-producing State? Is the long list of failures due to lack of &apos;commercial pools, or unintelligent prospecting? A study of its beds and irregularities of structure points not only to a large waste of development money on unpromising areas, but also to the presence of a few structures well worthy of development. The surface rocks of Kentucky show in succession more than 4,000 ft. of Paleozoic sediments and more than 2,000 ft. of Cretaceous, Tertiary, and more recent deposits. Folding and erosion have brought these beds to the surface, where they have been observed and studied: in detail by my associate, James H. Gardner, myself, and others. This has given opportunity to observe the beds offering suitable reservoirs and having the proper impermeable covering; also the mapping of outcrops and outcrop lines, taken in conjunction with available well records, indicates that certain areas are worth testing, and with even greater definiteness shows areas which should be excluded, as devoid of possibilities. West of the Tennessee River, Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary sediments occur so that all trace of ancient folding is obliterated, the sediments overlapping unconformably Mississippian rocks. This area embraces 2,000 square miles, or one-twentieth of the area of the State, the Paleozoic rocks covering the remainder. Since there is nothing upon which to base the location of tests for oil and gas in the Cretaceous-Tertiary beds of Kentucky, the Paleozoic area will be chiefly considered.

In tunneling or mining where hydraulic shields, moles, or rock boring equipment is used lasers such as those shown guide the production machine by providing a continuous and visible line and grade reference. In this application the laser may be mounted in the heading, preferably somewhere above spring line. If we view the circular heading as a compass in the vertical plane with 0º referencing at the crown of the heading and 180º on the invert, then it might be said that the laser may be mounted anywhere from 270º through 0º to 90º. The laser is generally mounted 2 to 3 ft off the wall or the crown of the heading by means of a bracket that may be attached directly to the liner plate. In cases where no liner plate is used, then brackets may be bolted directly into the ribs, or grouted directly into the rock. Once the laser is in position the beam is projected to the face. Two points must be surveyed upstream between the laser and the face which define line and grade. Targets may be suspended beneath each of these points approximately 2 to 3 ft. These targets may be circular or rectangular with a surface area which approximates 16 sq in. Each of these two targets should have a ½ to ¾ in. hole drilled directly in their center. When the laser is adjusted so that the beam passes through the holes in each of the two targets, the laser beam itself will parallel the center line of the tunnel and become a visible line and grade reference over the total beam projection.

Drilling in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. TO explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927 our firm was engaged by two organizations1 for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data this far collected. As a result of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined: one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel;2 the other, near Hetten-schlag, was briefly discussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the stratigraphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes; and to indicate the new geological outlookwhich such a discovery suggests. Stratigraphy In the southern part of the Rhine graben the Oligocene rests almost directly on the Middle Jurassic and consists, in ascending order, of: 1. Green marls, not salt-bearing, composed of fresh and brackish water deposits. 2. Middle stage, salt-bearing, consisting of lower-schistose marls and upper, variegated marls. 3. Blue marls, not salt-bearing, but including gypsum deposits; hence sediments laid down in a bay more or less connected with the sea.

When supplies of high pressure mercury or other liquids are required in analytical work, it is convenient to have the source of supply at a relatively constant pressure and available in sufficient volume to satisfy the requirements of the apparatus in use. It is also desirable that the pressuring device be as simple and as inexpensive as possible and convenient to operate. This pump combined with a small storage reservoir containing gas under pressure has the attributes of (1) positive control of the maximum output pressure through the use of a regulator in the low pressure air supply; (2) an increasing capacity as the rate of withdrawal of mercury from the pressured system is increased; and (3) simplicity, requiring only the use of a lathe, drill press, and welding unit in its construction. DESCRIPTION Essential parts of the pump are shown in Fig. 1. In appearance the unlt is similar to the usual steam pump in common use in industrial applications although considerably smaller in size. The main differences lie in the area ratio of the air and mercury pistons and in the design of the air valve mechanism. Approximate diameters of these pistons are 4.25 in. to 0.375 in. respectively, giving an area ratio of about 130 to 1. The air piston (2) is attached to the end of shaft (4), with the mercury piston being merely a reduced extension of the shaft. Mercury intake and discharge to the pump are controlled by high pressure check valves that screw into the ports indicated at (6). Air supply is controlled by the valve assembly mounted on top of the

The present work has two objectives: first to develop an experimental method which would give some new information on the micromechanism of the reduction of oxides by gases at elevated temperature; second to clari,fy the intermediate phases of the W-0 system, formed during the reduction. A Galvanic cell with the solid electrolyte , ZrO2 . CaO, was imbedded in powders of W03, CuO, or Fe20s with two measuring electvodes and with a reference electrode. The change of the intraparticle gas composition was measured at An oxygen concentration cell consists of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte through which the transference of electrical charge is accomplished predominantly by the migration of oxygen ions. Many works have been reported on the oxygen con- 600" to loo@ C during the reduction by the gas mixture of hydrogen and argon. The intraparticle gas composition changes stepwise with time. The electromotive force of such temporary interruption corresponds to the equilibrium electromotive force of two solid phases formed during the reduction. The intermediate phases of W-0 system, which are formed in a large quantity during the reduction by hydrogen, are W0 2 W02.72 and WOz. A LITERATURE survey of the In-Sb system, which was made before a study of the binary diagram was undertaken, revealed that the intermediate phase InSb existed and that its crystal structure is face-centered cubic of the zinc blend type. In 1929 Goldschmidt&apos; determined the lattice constant for InSb and obtained a value of 6.452A. A more recent value, 6.461A was reported by Iandelli2 in 1941. The purity of the indium used was not very high, however. The indium used by Iandelli contained 2 pct Ge. In view of this fact it was decided to remeasure the lattice parameter using high-purity indium (99.97+ pct In) and spectrographically standardized antimony of the highest purity available (99.91 pct Sb). Specimens corresponding to the InSb composition were made by carefully weighing the ingredients on an analytical balance and heating them in vacuo in a quartz tube at 700°C. As melting losses were negligible, the alloys were not analyzed chemically, but the intended analysis was taken as being accu- rate. Powder samples were prepared by either filing or crushing of the brittle alloy, followed by screening at 325 mesh. The powders were then annealed at 400°C in evacuated capsules for about an hour. X-ray photograms were taken with a Debye and a back-reflection focusing camera, using characteristic cobalt K. radiation. Lattice parameters were calculated by Cohen&apos;s³ method. The results of a Debye pattern and of a back-reflection pattern at 25°C are given in Tables I and 11. The lattice parameter at 25 °C is 6.47602A.
