The lead district of Southeast Missouri covers an area of over 3000 square miles, including Maries County on the west, Jefferson on the east, Franklin on the north, and part of Madison on the south, or parts of ten counties. A general section of the rocks of the southeast part of this region would be about as follows, numbering from the top: 1. Sandstone (the second of Missouri geologists),.... 20 feet. 2. Chert beds—beds of passage below,...... 126 " 3. Magnesian limestone, chert, and quartzite,. .. 100 to 300 " 4. Lower magnesian limestone,......100 to 150 " 5. Gritstone and lingula beds,....... 50 " 6. Ozark marble beds,........5 to 20 " 7. Sandstone and conglomerate,. .. .. 5 to 90 " 8. Porphyry, Archæan 9. Granite, The thickness is approximate, for it is not possible to obtain the correct thickness of the various beds. No. 1 may be seen as detached outliers or loose masses of a hard sandstone or quartzite, and is found on the hilltops in the southern part of Madison County, in like topographical position in Reynolds County and the western part of Washington County. No. 2 consists of alternations of chert, clay, and quartzite. It is the formation which contains most of the limonite deposits of Central and Southern Missouri. In Reynolds County shafts have penetrated it 75 feet. Outcrops there and in Madison would indicate it to be at least 125 feet thick. Fossils obtained in various places prove it clearly to be of the age of the calciferous saudrock of the New York system, and Nos. 1 and 2 may also be referred to the age of the second sandstone of Missouri. No. 3 consists chiefly of thick beds of ash, drab and flesh-colored magnesian limestone, both coarse and fine-grained. These beds, where they occur, in Washington, Jefferson, and the southern part of Madison Counties, contain a good deal of quartz in drusy cavities. In Washington County the limestones are beautifully ramified by a system of connected drusy cavities generally lined with minute quartz crystals arranged in botryoidal and mammillary forms, and called " mineral blossom " by the miners. This is the lead-bearing rock of Washington County, but in the southern part of Madison it does not appear to be galeniferous. It is also undoubtedly the equivalent of

For the first time in the history of the Venezuelan petroleum industry production exceeded 200 million barrels. The total production for all fields amounted to 205,430,869 bbl., which is more than 9 per cent of the world's 1939 total. This is an increase of over 15 million barrels or 8.0 per cent above the 1938 figure, which, compared with the slightly less than 2 per cent increase of the 1938 figure over 1937, shows the marked activity in Venezuela during the past year. The Maracaibo Lake fields are still the predominating factor in Venezuelan production, showing an increase of approximately 9½ million barrels over last year's figure and accounting for 71.8 per cent of Venezuela's total. Lagunillas continues to hold precedence as a single field, having yielded 47.1 per cent of the accumulative total and 39.4 per cent of 1939's total. This field showed an increase of slightly more than 3½ million barrels over 1938. Tia Juana, the second largest field, attained a record production, increasing its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 23.4 in 1938 to 23.7 in 1939. The La Rosa field, which includes Punta Benitez and Ambrosio, declined from 13.7 to 12.0 per cent; Bachaquero, the southernmost Lake field, which came into regular production at the end of 1938, contributed over 31/3 million barrels. Quiriquire, in eastern Venezuela, ousted La Rosa as the third largest producing field, and, although production increased by 11/3 milliorl barrels, percentage of the total declined from 13.2 to 12.9. Mene Grande, the oldest field, declined from 6.6 per cent in 1938 to 5.9 in 1939. Tem-blador produced for a whole year for the first time and yielded 3,647,867 bbl. The Colon district, in the Maracaibo Lake area, comprising the Tarra-Los Manueles fields, showed slight increases, as also did Cumarebo and Pedernales. Construction of the 16-in. pipe line from Oficina to Puerto La Cruz (Guanta), the longest line of this size in the world, was completed toward the end of the year and this new field in eastern Venezuela started shipping oil in December. When F. Heuslerl found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.% All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys4 the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intellgently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data. have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. Previous Work In the original work of F. Heuslerl and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for CusMnAl of I = 443 was early measured. Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.

INTRODUCTION The Luanshya Mine is situated in the southern part of the Zambian Copperbelt. The copper ore deposit is stratiform, and is preserved in a synclinorium known as the Roan/ Muliashi basin. Roan shaft (formally called No.14 shaft) is located at the eastern end of the syncline and is theoldest of the presently operating hoisting shafts, being sunk during the 1930's. It presently hoists some 45 per- cent of the total Luanshya Mine production. A cross-section through the shaft is shown in figure 1. The ore formation on the south limb is unmined on this section because until recently it was believed that such mining might cause damage to the shaft. This paper examines the influences of adjacent mining on this so-called 'shaft pillar', and describes the mechanics of subsidence of the pillar itself. GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE Figure 1 shows the general form of folding in the vicinity of Roan shaft. The north and south limbs of the main syncline approach parallelism, with the bottom of the trough fairly smoothly rounded. The axis of the - trough plunges to the west-north-west at 6° - l0°. A brief summary of the major lithologies present in the Roan basin is given in table 1, however, the performance of the overall structure during progressive mining of the ore horizon is controlled by the following features in addition to the mining method. Intraformational Contacts These are characteristically weak in most geological environments. The BC/RL7 contact is an unconformity between moderately weak quartz-biotite schists below (unconfined compressive strength 40 - 80 MN/M 2), and strong quartzites above (U .C .S. 170-200 MN/M2) Subsequent formations are conformable, and planes of weakness are generally the result of contrasting lithology (see below). Weak Interbeds The Rt7, RL6, RL5, RL3 and RU2 horizons consist predominantly of quartzitic rocks, i.e. conglomerates, quartzites and argillites, and as such are generally strong and considered suitable for the positioning of development. Between these however, lie two much weaker dolomitic horizons, the RL4 and RU1. The Rt4 is the main hangingwall aquifer, and must be drained prior to mining. Drainage results in an extremely weak, blocky cavernous horizon which usually requires support if exposed by development. Similarly, the RU1 formation is comprised mainly of dolomites and dolomitic arqillites which are weak and cavernous. In the eastern part of the Roan/

EVER since the unusual high temperature creep resistance and structure stability of SAP (Sintered Aluminum Powder) and similar aluminum-alumina alloys were reported,'," there has been a need to determine whether other metal-metal oxide (or other hard stable particle) alloys, not so ideal as the Al-Al 2 O 3 system, would show similar high temperature strength and stability. Of the many possible methods of obtaining a metal-metal oxide alloy,a one that offers many practical and theoretical advantages is the simple mechanical blending of metal powders with hard stable particles, followed by pressing, sintering, and hot extruding. With this purpose in mind copper powder and silica and alumina were selected for experimentation because these materials are readily available, cheap, reliable, and lend themseives te the simplest processing and testing. Starting Materials—Two sizes of electrolytically deposited copper powders were used, a —200 mesh powder referred to as A powder in this investigation and a —325 mesh powder referred to as C powder. Silica was added in the form of pure Potter's flint from which a —10µ fraction had been separated. Alumina of the a variety was used in two size ranges. The first was a —10µ fraction separated from a coarser aggregate, the second a commercial product of 0.3µ average diam manufactured by Linde Air Products. Preparation of Powders—Five-hundred gram batches of A copper with 1, 3, and 10 volume pct of each of the three oxides mentioned above were prepared, as well as C copper containing 1, 3, and 10 volume pct of —lop silica. Powders were weighed out carefully and blended by ball milling in air for 24 hr. Since this treatment resulted in surface oxidation of the copper, the charge was hydrogen reduced at 260°C for 5 hr. The next step consisted of hydrostatically compacting the powder into a shape suitable for the required hot working. For this purpose a slug about 11/2 in. in diam and 31/2 in. in length was produced by placing the mixed powders into a rubber sleeve, holding in a perforated steel canister, and rubber stoppering at the ends; the assembly was then subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 50,000 psi. If one holds up a prism, or wedge of glass, with narrow angle, say l° to 2O, and compares the transmitted image with the image seen above or below the prism, the former will be found to be thrown to one side by an amount varying with the angle of the wedge. Speaking of the two rays as the direct ray and the bent ray, we may say, that when the bisecting plane of the prism is at right angles to the line of sight, the angle between the direct ray and the bent ray will be constant for any given prism. If now we place a prism or wedge of glass in such a position that it half-covers the objective of a telescope, we shall obtain on looking through it two images of every object seen—one image by the direct ray, which comes through the unaovered half of the objective, the other which comes through the prism, and is the image by the bent ray. The angle of divergence of these two raps will be constant and unalterable, whether the telescope is directed to a near object, with its eye-piece at increased distance from its objective, or upon a ' distant object, with eye-piece nearer to the objective. That is to say, if the " throw " or apparent dislocation of the image is one foot in one hundred feet it will be two feet in two hundred, ten feet in a thousand, and so on. The usual form of stadia-telescope has at the focal point of the objective two spider-lines, placed at a definite distance apart and intended, let us say, to represent a throw of one foot in one hundred feet. But as the distance between lines remains the same, while the distance from the objective to the webs diflers with every variation in the distance of observed objects, it follows that the angle between the lines of sight which these two spider-lines define cannot be con stant, but must vary with every increase or decrease of distance be tween the instrument and the object viewed. A CONSIDERABLE amount of information is available on the equilibrium distribution of manganese between slag and metal under oxidizing conditions. These data have increased our knowledge of the manganese reactions in the open hearth, ladle, and ingot mold. In contrast, there is a paucity of data on the slag-metal distribution of manganese under reducing conditions. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium distribution of manganese between blast-furnace type slags and iron saturated with carbon. Experimental Method Furnace: The induction furnace used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. A 1 in. pipe, attached to the transite cover, was fitted with a window through which the charge could be observed. Material could be introduced into the furnace through a tee and plug without removing the cover. A graph-it cylinder (3 in. ID and 10'/2 in. long), centered within the induction coil, was used as a heating element. During a test, a zircon plug kept the top of the furnace from becoming too hot from heat radiation. At the bottom, a graphite block on the vertical center line of the furnace and extending 1 1/2 in. into the coil, was used as a support for the graphite crucibles containing the melt. The graphite crucibles, machined from regular carbon electrode stock, had a 2% in. OD with 3/16 in. walls and were 5% in. long. The fumes present in the furnace during the early part of a run made optical readings uncertain. A noble metal thermocouple was, therefore, adopted to measure the temperatures. The arrangement used, shown in Fig. 1, allowed the silmanite protection tube to be replaced with a minimum effort. The thermocouple was calibrated against a standard Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple in a fused quartz protection tube. The latter was inserted in the molten iron by removing the glass window on the cover. The lower couple was found to be very sensitive to temperature changes. To insure accurate temperature readings, the graphite crucibles were made to fit tightly against the silmanite protection tube. Further, to avoid contamination of the thermocouple by carbon, the silmanite tube was changed and the calibration procedure was repeated at frequent intervals. By using this temperature measuring technique, the furnace was easily held within *1O°C of the desired temperature. Understanding the sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions depends on a knowledge of the concentration of the solids at various positions in the pulp and the times required for thickening. Flocculated kaolin slurries were studied with the transviewer, a device utilizing X-ray absorption in conjunction with a scanning mechanism. A mathematical model based on the Schuhmann size distribution in conjunction with Poiseuille's law yields experimental filtration rates as a hction of pulp density. These calculations show accord with the experimental results. Accurate predictions of sedimentation results depend upon determining the number and size of pores for given conditions, since the voidage of the suspension controls the volume of liquor that can pass through an element of suspension per unit time. A study on the sedimentation of flocculated kaolin slurries has indicated that their sedimentation takes place by two different processes, dependent on the initial concentration of solids in suspension. One process occurs in dilute suspensions (less than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which a multitude of relatively small flocs settle by hindered settling. In this case, maximal settling velocity is independent of container geometry.1 r2 The other process occurs in relatively concentrated suspensions (greater than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which the mass is considered to be settling as an aggregate network or as one large floc, defined as to size by the dimensions of the container. In this case, container geometry affects sedimentation results significantly. Furthermore, it seems that this single floc is in a state of compression from the beginning of settling, and that two phases of compression settling exist during sedimentation. The first occurs during the early stage of settling where liquid exudes easily and rapidly from the floc, while the second occurs in the compacting portion of the floc where water escapes more slowly and with much more difficulty. Sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions may then be thought to be a filtration phenomenon in which a pulp thickens by the filtration of its contained liquor through the aggregate network of pulp above it. Diffusion coefficient values for carbon in austenite covering a wide range of temperature and composition have been determined employing statistical methods. In addition, the relation between concentration and each of the following, D (diffusion coefficient), Q (activation heat of diffusion), and A (the constant in the diffusion equation), has been obtained. A study of the rates of diffusion of austenite was published in Metals Technology in 1940.' The present investigation is an extension of the earlier work, undertaken (1) to obtain values of the coefficient of diffusion, D, over a much wider range of carbon concentration, and (2) to provide data in all ranges of concentration and temperature in such abundance that statistical methods could be employed to evaluate the accuracy of the data with unusual precision. Composition of Materials: Composition of materials used in this research program are listed in table I. These materials, all forged to about 1 1/4 in. rounds, consist of a high-purity iron, Armco iron, a large number of laboratory-made plain carbon steels containing amounts of impurities normally expected in high-quality commercial steels, and three silicon steels. Since it was known at the time these steels were being made that impurities in the amounts present were unlikely to affect carbon diffusion rates' significantly, the effort made to obtain high-purity steels was not as persistent as it otherwise would have been. Procedure: In general, the procedure followed by Wells and Mehl and described' in detail in an earlier publication' is the one used by the present authors. However, certain modifications have been made which it is believed allow diffusion data to be interpreted more objectively and correctly. These are described completely under appropriate subheadings which follow. Experimental Procedure: Experimental procedure includes (1) the preparation of specimens by welding steels of different carbon contents, (2) the heating of these for certain times at selected temperatures in order to diffuse carbon along the specimens across the welded "interface," and (3) the determination of the carbon distribution across the diffusion zone. Preparation of Specimens: Prior to welding steel of one carbon content to iron or steel of another carbon content, surfaces to be welded are machined perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of cylinders which are about 3/4 in. in diam and 1 1/2 in. long. The prepared, flat, parallel surfaces are brought together and butt-welded electrically. Evidence of a good weld is given in fig. 1. Welding temperature

The following specifications, proposed by a sub-committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, are still to be adopted and subsequently submitted to the International Association for Testing Materials. Standard Specifications for Pig-Iron and Castings. I. Analysis.—It is recommended that all purchases be made by analysis. II. Sampling.—In contracts where pig-iron is sold by chemical analysis, each carload, or its equivalent, shall be considered as a unit. At least one pig shall be selected at random from each two tons of every carload, and so as to fairly represent it. Drillings shall be taken so as to fairly represent the fracture surface of each pig, and the sample analyzed shall consist of an equal quantity of drillings from each pig, well mixed and ground before analysis. III. Allowances and Penalties.—III all contracts, in the absence of a definite understanding to the contrary, a variation of 10 per cent. of silicon, either way, and of .01 in sulphur above the standard is allowed. A deficiency of over 10 per cent. in the silicon, up to 20 per cent., and a further increase in sulphur up to .01 over the above allowance subjects the shipment to a penalty of 1 per cent. in the price for each element so affected. IV. Base Analysis OF Grades. —In the absence of specifications the following numbers, known to the trade, shall represent the appended analyses for standard grades of foundry pig-iron, irrespective of the fracture, and subject to allowances and penalties as above. They shall be at least 12 feet in length, exclusive of socket. For pipes of each size from 4-inch to 24-inch, inclusive, there shall be two standards of outside diameter, and for pipes from 30-inch to 60-inch, inclusive, there shall be four standards of outside diameter, as shown by Table No. 11.

FOLLOWING the techniques used by Beck and co-worker~ "~ the characteristics of selective growth in the recrystallization of a zone-refined aluminum single crystal, rolled 80 pct at -78°C in the (110)[112] orientation, have been studied. The material was 99.999+ pct pure. The as-grown crystal had a resistance ratio, R(298°K) /R(4,2°K), of approximately 5000. The method of preparation of the single crystals and the necessary precautions in handling them during rolling in order to avoid recrystallization in locally distorted regions were described in an earlier paper.3 The rolling texture of this zone-refined aluminum crystal is practically identical with that of less pure aluminum crystals rolle! in the same orientation, i.e., a very sharp (110)[112]. Random nuclei were provided by artificial nuclea-tion by abrading one face of the rolled crystal on 600-grit emery paper in a random fashion. The thin layer of disturbed metal recrystallized at room temperature into fine grains almost immediately. An X-ray diffraction pattern was taken from the abraded surface of the crystal, and the relative intensities of the various reflection peaks were compared with those obtained from a powder specimen. As shown in Fig. 1, the relative intensities of the various peaks from the recrystallized layer varied somewhat from experiment to experiment, depending presumably on the abrading technique. However, the texture of the recrystallized layer produced by this method is nearly as random as that of a powder specimen. Fig. 2 shows the texture determined from the "growth side" (face opposite the abraded surface) of the crystal after it was kept at room temperature for 100 hr. The specimen was only partially recrystallized, as shown by the remaining deformation texture. The new orientations are derived from the recrystallized grains grown through the thickness of the crystal from the "nucleation side" (the abraded surface). Fig. 3 shows the texture after complete recrystallization produced by annealing at 60°C for 1 hr. The arrows indicate 40-deg rotation around the (111) axes of the deformation texture. The microstructure of a completely recrystallized specimen is shown in Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the texture of the re-crystallized grains grown from the nucleation side to the growth side is essentially the same as that observed in less pure aluminum' (99.994 pct) and dilute alloyz crystals rolled in the same orientation. THE pressures of Mn(g) in equilibrium with Mn7C3 and graphite have been measured by McCabe and Hudson' and Butler, McCabe, and paxton2 by means of graphite, zirconia, and Ta-Mo Knudsen cells. The details of corrections in their measurements were somewhat different from those of the authors;3'4 hence, further independent results at higher temperatures seemed to be warranted. The stoichiom-etry of Mn7C3 in equilibrium with graphite and its stability up to the vicinity of 1373 °K have been satisfactorily established by Kuo and persson5 (See also Hansen and Anderko).' The method of investigation has been described elsewhere in detail.3'4 The carbide was prepared in the manner described by McCabe and Hudson. In order to avoid possible reactions with refractory oxides, only graphite cells were used for the effusion experiments. The authors' results are the runs M-1, M-2 and M-3 listed in Table I, together with those of McCabe and co-workers. The heat capacity, c;, of Mn7C3 is not known; therefore McCable et al. plotted their data as log P vs 1/T and the results were only expressed first' as, and later2 as logP=- -14220+6.06 without further thermodynamic calculations. However, it is possible to estimate closely the necessary heat capacity as follows: When H; - &98 of CrC, or MnO, is plotted vs x, corresponding to various compounds, with temperature as the parameter, it is seen that the relationship is represented by a line of very small curvature. This relationship is also followed by other compounds which do not exhibit solid state phase transformations. In view of the fact that chromium and manganese have the atomic numbers of 24 and 25 respectively, it is reasonable to assume that H; - H;ae vs x for MnC, follows the same type of lines as those for CrC, for which adequate data are available.7 Similar correlations appear to be valid for oxides of two neighboring metals for which reliable data are available. The procedure is thus to move the lines for CrC, vertically (parallel to the axis of HT - H298) until they coincide with the points for MnC1/3, the only carbide of manganese whose H; - HO298 has been
