THE Hayden mill of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, is now equipped with two 9 by 12-ft. rod mills having a daily capacity of 6000 tons of coarse-crushing plant product from the mine. These two mills crush a 3/4-in. product to approximately 19 per cent on 14 mesh, with only one pass through the mills. Each rod mill has taken the place of four sets of 42-in. Garfield rolls with their attendant screens, and is making a product for the fine-grinding department comparable to that formerly made by rolls in closed circuit with screens. The rod mills are lined with wave-type liners of white iron, varying in thickness from 2 to 3 in. The shell and end liners last approximately 600 to 700 clays. Manganese-steel lifter bars, 3 5/8 in. thick, are used, spaced about 11 in. apart, and they give a life of 350 to 450 clays. Fig. 1 shows the general design and thickness of the wave-type liners and lifter bars; 1 1/2 -in. liner bolts are used to fasten the lifter bars to the shell. The shell liners are held in place by the tapered lifter bars. A ¾-in. wood hacking is used between the shell and the liners. The rod-mill scoop has removable manganese-steel lips, which last 250 to 300 days. The scoop proper has shown some wear in spots; and these spots have been protected by rubber bolted over them. Water and milk of lime are added to the elevator feeding the mill, but not enough water to cause a pounding of the rods against the shell. Roughly, the water added amounts to 2.5 to 33 per cent of the ore. Addi-tional water is added to the mill discharge to facilitate distribution to the classifier bowls in the fine-grinding department.

One of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross-sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance of a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure, in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the e1etrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. There was more activity in crude production in northwestern Pennsylvania in 1935 than for several years before, resulting in an increased oil production and also in the number of wells completed. Crude -production approximated 16 million barrels for the state, an increase of about one million barrels over 1934. Demand, indicated by refiners' runs to stills, increased proportionally, leaving stocks of available crude at the end of the year at the lowest point since the middle of 1934, when they reached an all-time low. The price of crude varied during the year from a low of $2.02 to a high of $2.27 at the end of the year for Middle district oil. The price of Bradford and southwest Pcnnsylvania oil changed accordingly. The average for the year would be a lower price than in 1934. A summary of the production data for the year 1935 is given in Table 1. In making up this table, 1935 figures were simply added to the table published by S. H. Cathcart last year1. A list of important wildcats is given in Table 2. Bradford Field Approximately 10,000 acres of the proven producing area of the Bradford field is in Cattaraugus County, New York, and it is possible, by differences, to distinguish the Pennsylvania production from the New York portion. The listed production for the Bradford field includes only that portion of the field situated in Pennsylvania, but also includes production from a small pool, locally known as the Mt. Jewett-Kanesholm pool, where the Bradford sand is being developed and flooded in precisply the same manner as that of the Bradford field itself. The Mt. Jewett-Kanesholm pool is not, strictly speaking, an extension of the Bradford field, but inasmuch as it is so closely allied with the Bradford field-—that is, the sand is the same and the production methods are the same—the production and drilling figures include this area.

We are currently studying the effects on recrys-tallization of impurities diffused into dispersion-hardened alloys. Our interest in this phenomenon was originally aroused by the observation that the recrystallization temperature range of tungsten "doped" with alumina and silica, or with thoria, is lowered drastically if nickel is plated onto the tungsten prior to heat treatment.' In this note, we report a similar effect that sulfur has on the recrystallization behavior of thoriated nickel. The experimental procedure for this exploratory phase of the investigation has consisted simply in heating commercially obtained stress-relieved samples of thoriated nickel for varying temperatures and times in sealed capsules containing air and small quantities of sulfur. The samples contain 2.4 vol pct thoria and initially less than 18 ppm S by weight; they are prepared either from 0.5-in.-ciiam rod stock or from 0.092-in. sheet and are in the "as-received" (stress-relieved) condition prior to exposure. In an atmosphere free of sulfur, such samples do not show evidence of recrystallization after being annealed for 1 hr at a temperature of 2500°F (1372C).2 The photomicrograph in Fig. 1 shows the microstructure of one of our samples annealed for 75 hr at 1000° C (1832°F) in a sulfur-free capsule. The grain structure is hardly evident (if at all) at 465 times magnification. In contrast, the photomicrograph of Fig. 2 shows the recrystallization that has taken place in a sample exposed to sulfur for 5 hr at 1000°C (1832°F). A nickel sulfide phase is visible at the grain boundaries of the light-appearing grains. We have also observed recrystallization to occur in a sample annealed at 600°C (1112°F) for 25 hr. This temperature is below the 637°C (1178°F) eutectic in the Ni-S system. In the latter case, no nickel sulfide phase is evident in the microstructure. Moreover, we have noticed the occur-

The absolute porosity of a rock or sand may be defined as the volume of the interparticle space expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. The effective porosity as contrasted with the absolute porosity is the volume of the interparticle spaces which intercommunicate with passages of sufficient size to permit the entrance or recovery of gas or oil, also expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. A knowledge of effective porosity is of prime importance in estimating the ultimate recovery to be expected from oil and gas-bearing formations. The determination of the effective porosity of a rock includes the measurement of two values: (I) the volume of the rock as a whole, and (2) the volume of the grains and sealed pore space. This paper deals with a new apparatus which has been called a "hydrogen porosimeter" for determining the volume of the grains and the sealed pore space. This volume is determined by means of the pressure relations established in the instrument by the introduction of a known quantity of hydrogen. The Hydrogen Porosimeter The apparatus used in this work consists of an upper chamber for measuring the gas, a lower chamber for holding the sample to be tested, a gage for measuring the pressures, a tank of hydrogen, and the necessary connections. (Figs. 1 and 2.) Of the several gases that might be used for this work, hydrogen has been chosen for three reasons: (1) it deviates less from the gas laws than most gases; (2) it readily penetrates the sample; (3) it is absorbed less than most gases by the solids and liquids with which it may come in contact. Method of Operation After placing the sample to be tested in the lower chamber, the apparatus is thoroughly flushed with hydrogen to remove all air from the system, which is then brought to atmospheric pressure Po. The valve connecting the two chambers is next closed and the pressure in the upper chamber is brought up to a pressure PI by admitting gas from the tank.

9.4-1. Basic principles. DESCRIPTION AND BASIC FUNCTIONS. The concept of inclined skip haulage is not new. The basic idea has been in use at least 400 years. The system is essentially a steeply inclined railway utilizing a hoist to pull the skips to the top or intermediate positions. Inclined skip haulage is often justified where high lifts would require long hauls for other haulage systems. The basic system types are as follows: 1. Single skip, single drum. This system is a single car pulled by a simple hoist system. 2. Balanced skip, single drum. A system utilizing two cars (skips on cables)--one overwound, one underwound-on a single drum. The dead weight of one skip and cable balances the dead weight of the other. As one skip ascends the other descends between two fixed points. 3. Balanced skip, double drum. This system is an elaboration of system No. 2, except the drums may be disengaged from one another to permit the skips to service various loading and dumping points. The preceding are major classifications subject to numerous variations. These variations may be in the skipway, skip design, loading methods, or unloading methods. A few examples follow: 1. The skipway may be standard or special railroad, an overhead monorail or cable, or a ramp for rubber tired vehicles. 2. The skip, per se, may be of varying dumping arrangements (side, bottom, etc.) or could be the box of the vehicle hauling to the skip. 3. Loading may be accomplished directly from the service unit to skip, through an intermediate loading device (e.g., a pocket), or into bins which feed the skip. Loading may be at more than one point. 4. Unloading of the skip can be simple or complex as required. Dumping may be to the haulage unit, to bins and feeders, or to a crusher and conveyor system. Dumping may take place at more than one point.

This paper summarizes the results obtained from the preliminary cementing of wells in an effort to cut off the bottom water. The object of this work was two-fold: (1) To prevent the oil sand from becoming flooded. (2) To plug off bottom water, thereby preserving the individual well and reclaiming production. Valuable suggestions and help have been given by the following named: Messrs. Kyle and La Velle, of the U. 8. Bureau of Mines; Magnolia Petroleum -Co.; Freed Oil and Gas Co. The cementing work was carried out under the personal supervision of L. J. Snyder. In an unpublished paper on the "Water Problem in the Augusta Field," 5. K. Clark reaches the following conclusions: (1) That the great amount of water present is bottom water, occurring in the Varner sand, the main producing or the 2500-ft. horizon, (2) That the only striking connection between structure and water is in .the area of the marked fault on the Ralston, E. C. Varner, and F. Varner leases in sections 8, 9, 16 and 17. (3) That the oil occurs in porous streaks, generally separated by finegrained, well cemented sand, which is barren. Possibly two or three such pay streaks may be found. That under a pay, fine-grained sand occurs, which is presumably barren at the time of drilling, but soon reveals water. The writer takes partial exception to the last point, because well defined shale, slate, lime, or hard sand breaks have been encountered in a great many cases, separating the pay streaks under which water is often found. This is not an invariable occurrence, as cases have been noted when the oil has been followed immediately by water in the same stratum. In an effort to overcome the water menace, the following methods of plugging were tried: (1) Plugging with wood, lead, and limit plugs. (2) Plugging with sand pumpings.

There are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Incel proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube. after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice's chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4:I and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,' several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. Recently Chang determined heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide from 325" to985°Kand 326" to 912"K, respectively, and, using other published data, made certain solid-state calculations for these two compounds. Chang expressed his Cp values in units of cal per "g-atom alloy" OK. We consider this poor usage since l) tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide are not alloys, and 2) an atom of an alloy does not exist. However, one may convert his values to units of cal per mole OK by merely doubling them. For TaC he calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 9.07 x lo-' "g-atom per cal". We have refined the calculation of this parameter and have arrived at a much lower value. Rather than approximating the true coefficient of volume expansion, a,, as three times the true coefficient of linear expansion, a, we calculated u, from the TaCo.99, lattice expansion data of Fries and Wahman.38 At 25°C a, = 14.3 x 10s per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 13.32 cu cm per mole at 25°C. From the lattice compression data of Champion and Drickamer~' for "TaC,.,," we determined the room-temperature compressibility to be 3.5 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne by plotting l/Vo (aV/ap) vs applied pressure. (Since the lowest pressure at which Champion and Drickamer reported a relative volume was 20 kbars, one may calculate an approximate compressibility only. Chang calculated a compressibility of 3.175 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne from the same data.) We also used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.38 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C. From these four values we calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 5.8 x 10-l4 mole per erg or 2.4 x lo- ' mole per cal, and a Cdil value of 2.3 x 10' ergs per mole OK. In the case of tungsten monocarbide no isothermal compressibility has been reported; however, one may calculate an approximate Nernst-Lindemann parameter by using the adiabatic compressibility reported by Brown, Armstrong, and Kempter." Using the WC lattice expansion data of Mauer and Bolz~l we calculated a, to be 12., x l0-' per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 12.5 cu cm per mole. We used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.18 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C. From these four values we calculated an approximate Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 2 x lo-' mole per cal, which is much
