Tier; production of thorium of high purity by the Ca-CaCl2 reduction has been described by Marden and Rentschler,1 who also reported some of the properties of the coherent, ductile metal obtained from this pure thorium powder. The present paper describes the properties of thorium produced by the Ca-CaCl2 process modified in some details to meet commercial conditions. The principal effect of these changes in process has been an unavoidable increase in the oxide content of the thorium.

For example, the price of coal remained relatively constant from 1950 to 1969 (see Figs. 5-1 and 5-2) but steam coal prices tripled and metallurgical coal prices doubled from 1969 to 1974. This price structure has created a new economic environment for coal preparation. Contributing factors to these price trends include: 1) Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. 2) Mid-East oil embargo of 1973.

It is usually assumed1,2 that ore deposition is relatively slow, taking place over tens of thousands of years. Yet many syntheses and phase changes can be completed in the laboratory in a matter of hours, under essentially the same pressure and temperature conditions to be expected in nature. Much has been written about geothermometry, and Ingerson's recent summary2 can hardly be surpassed. Rather than review the whole field, this article will deal specifically with diffusion rates in solid solutions* of the sulfide minerals.

IN preparing material for the exhibit of the National Museum at the New Orleans Exposition in 1881, it was decided to attempt to photograph the interior of a coal-mine, in order to get a strictly truthful representation of a thick coal-seam, and to show incidentally the methods of mining. While we have many drawings, both mechanical and artistic, illustrating the subject, they are not satisfactory for these purposes, simply because they are drawings. Aside from this, much interest attaches to pictures of inaccessible places, and the enlarged copies (30 inches by 40 inches) of the photographs we succeeded in obtaining, have attracted a large amount of attention from the visitors to the Museum. The Kohinoor colliery, Shenandoah City, Pa., was selected as most suitable for the attempt, principally on account of the fine exposure of the Mammoth bed, and the comparatively level character of the workings, in that colliery. This is one of the many anthracite-mines of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company. A detailed section of the fiftyfoot or Mammoth bed in this colliery is as follows: Feet. Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the recent many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex. Many factors, such as mine design, production scheduling, as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

The chlorination of ilmenite concentrates and slags to produce Tic14 suitable for pigment or metal production was investigated by the Bureau of Mines along with the dechlorination of byproduct iron chloride to produce chlorine for recycle and iron oxide., Ilmenite concentrates or slag powders were fed into the bottom of a fluidized coke bed at 1,050º C using chlorine flow rates up to 20 l/min in a 10.2-cm-dim reactor. Tests showed that >95 percent of the various ilmenite concentrates reacted at optimum conditions, and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 100 percent of stoichiometric. Impurity dusts were removed from the vapors by cyclones and a fiberglass cloth filter. Iron chloride was condensed as a powder with less than 0.4 percent insoluble material. The TiC14 was collected in refrigerated condensers. Iron chloride was dechlorinated at 500º to 550º C by reaction with oxygen in a 16.5-cm-dim reactor using a fluidized bed of Fe2O3. Optimum processing was attained with a FeC13 feed containing 25 wt-pct Fe203 granules treated with 2 wt-pct NaCl catalyst; Under the above conditions, off gas chlorine concentrations of 62 to 90 wt-pct were obtained. During 2- and 3-day tests with technical-grade FeC13, conversion of FeC13 was 94 to 97 percent, chlorine concentrations were 76 to 90 wt-pct, and up to 92 pct of the stoichio- metric Fe203 was removed in the primary reactor discharge. Reed, the 8x8x8-in. square block was subjected to compressive forces from three sides, top, side, and rear. Let us refer to the stresses set up by these forces as Sz due to top pressure, Sy due to side pressure, and Sx due to rear pressure. At the section across the 2-in. hole (when failure occurred at 317 psi) the compressive stress Sy was equal to 317 x 8/6 = —422 psi, the top compressive stress S; is of the same intensity, —422 psi, and the rear compressive stress S, equals —317 psi. The Kosaka smelter is situated in the extreme northern end of Hondo (the main island of Japan) 15 mi. east of Odate, on the government railroad, to which it is connected by a private railway. It contains ten blast furnaces having a maximum daily capacity of 1600 short tons of ore, conducting a slow pyritic smelting entirely without coke or limestone, and with a charge carrying over 50 per cent. of briquetted and agglomerated fines. The matte (35 per cent. Cu) is blown in two basic-lined barrel converters, the blister copper (98.8 per cent. Cu) being cast at once into anodes. The adjoining refinery contains 600 tanks with a maximum capacity of 1300 tons of cathodes per month, the byproducts being gold, silver, and bismuth. At present, working at about half capacity, the whole plant consumes 2000 kw. of hydro-electric power, and employs 850 men and women. The ores are derived from two principal sources: The relatively new Hanaoka mine, 20 mi. from the smelter, yielding copper pyrites by underground mining, and the old Kosaka open-cut mine, 1 1/2 mi. from the smelter, yielding three different ores: (a) kuromono, a compact finegrained mixture of barite (32 per cent.), zinc blende, galena, and pyrite, the whole carrying about 2.5 per cent. Cu; (6) cupriferous pyrites with 2.4 per cent. Cu; (c) siliceous ore with 2 per cent. Cu. The Hanaoka ore now constitutes approximately one-half of the charge, almost replacing the Kosaka kuromono which was the ore chiefly smelted until 1913.'

In polycrystalline Zircaloy-2 the orientation of zirconium hydride precipitates is influenced by an applied stress during hydride precipitation; hydride platelets are oriented nearly parallel to a compres-sive stress and perpendicular to a tensile tress. 1,2 A similar effect has been observed in the Ti-H system, where precipitation of the low-density hydride platelets occurred on habit planes made energetically favorable by the application of stress. 3 Recently, stress activation of hydride habit planes in zirconium and Zircaloy-4 was also demonstrated. The hydrides precipitated on {101l), {112l} and (2131) planes in both zirconium and Zircaloy-4; however, no platelets were found near the prism-plane positions in the Zircaloy-4 samples. Investigations at the Savannah River Laboratory, using polycrystalline Zirc_aloy-2 samples, have confirmed the (101l) and (1121) habit planes but also showed that the prism planes were active hydride habit planes. Using single-surface stereographic analysis and back-reflection Laue techniques, most of the previously reported habit planes for a zirconium were observed.4"1 and one additional plane, the (1013) plane, was noted, Table I. All the habit planes observed had the form (101l) or { 112l) indicating that these planes are the habit planes for hydride precipitation in poly-crystalline Zircaloy-2. The specimens used in these studies were cut from large-grained weld areas of seam-welded tubing and were hydrided in either a static steam autoclave at 400°C and 1500 psig or in a modified Sieverts apparatus at 400°C.

Self-diffusion in Y uranium has been measured using U235 as the tracer isotope. The diffusion coefficient fits an Arrhenius-type equation D = 2.33 x 10 -3 exp (- 28,5000/RT) cm2/sec The values of Do and Q are unusually low and are not consistent with the values expected from theories based on a simple vacancy mechanism of diffusion. CYLINDRICAL samples, 1 cm in diam and 1/2 to 1 cm long, were prepared from high-purity uranium containing 0.0343 pct u235, Table I. The samples were water quenched from 690°C (the a-ß transformation is at 668°C) to remove preferred orientation, and annealed at 450 "C to minimize residual stresses. One end of each cylinder was polished on a 1-µ diamond lap and electropolished in a phosphoric acid solution. After a final cleaning by cathodic sputtering, a 1- to 3-µ thick layer of the tracer isotope, uranium containing 93 pct u235, was sputtered onto the sample.' To prevent contamination during the diffusion anneal, the diffusion couples were placed in a tantalum cup and covered with another piece of uranium, and the whole assembly was sealed off in an evacuated quartz tube. Annealing temperatures were constant within +2.0°C. The samples were heated and cooled slowly between room temperature and the ß-? transformation (774°C) in order to minimize distortion of the sample surface that might arise from aniso-tropic thermal expansion and density changes during phase transformations. In the equilibrium phase diagram of the Ni-Mo sys-tem1,2 available at present, intermetallic compounds (or ordered phases)ß(Ni4Mo) and ?(Ni3Mo) are known to exist to the nickel rich side. In our recent investigations on Ni-Mo alloys, however, it has been found that the quenched alloys from the high temperature region containing more molybdenum than the Ni4Mo do not decompose directly into 0 and when annealed isothermally below the peritectoid temperature, i.e., 865°C. This note is to report the existence of Pt2Mo type superlattice (possibly ordered Ni2Mo) as a metastable phase in the early stage of decomposition. Alloys containing 20.1, 22.7, and 24.4 at. pct Mo were prepared by vacuum-melting electrolytic nickel of 99.9 pct purity and molybdenum powder of 99.9 pct purity in an alumina crucible. From the resulting ingots, sheets 0.3 mm thick were obtained by forging, hot-, and cold-rolling. The sheet specimens were water-quenched from ! region and subsequently annealed for various periods of time at temperatures below the peritectoid temperature. On these specimens were made optical-microscopic and transmis-sion-electron-microscopic observations. The self-diffusion coefficients of ß tin have been deterttlltled using a plating and sectioning technique. The principal diffusivities pavallel and perpendicu1ar to the "c" axis are given by the Arrhenius relations Dc = 8.2 exp (-25,600/RT) sq cnl per sec and Da = 1.4 exp (-23,300/RT) sq cm) per sec. The results are discussed in terms of a vacancy mecharism of diffusion. In conjunction with an investigation of diffusion in dilute indium-tin alloys we have reexamined self-diffusion in tin single crystals. The published self-diffusion coefficients of tin, eensham') have always appeared anomalous in comparison to diffusion data for other metals and do not correlate with parameters derived from creep tests.' In addition to the necessity of confirming the self-diffusion values for use in analyzing the alloy work, self-diffusion in an anisotropic lattice is of considerable fundamental interest and confirmation of the published data seemed worthwhile. For a crystal with an axis of symmetry three-fold or higher the diffusivity at an angle 6 to the axis is given by D? = (Da - Do) sin2?+ Do [1] where Da and Do are the principal diffusivities perpendicular and parallel to the axis. Three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB,l ZrB2,2,3 and ZrB12, 4 The phase relationships, ranges of stability, and some physical properties of these compounds are described. THE zirconium borides differ considerably from one another, particularly with respect to their relative stabilities at high temperatures in the presence of carbon.4,5 ZrB2 is extremelv stable at all temperatures (to the melting point) in contact with carbon. Both ZrB and ZrB12 tend to decompose at elevated temperatures when carbon is present in excess of about 0.5 pct. ZrB forms ZrB2 and ZrC, and ZrB12 decomposes to form ZrB2 and a boron-carbide phase. In the ZrB12 preparation, boron present in excess of that needed to form ZrB2 reacts with carbon, if present, to form carbides, in preference to forming the higher boride. Similar instability of borides, other than diborides of the transition metals of the 4th and 5th groups of the periodic table, has been reported.5,6 special precautions had, therefore, to be taken to minimize carbon contamination in the preparation of ZrB and ZrB12. Reactions below 1400°C were carried out by heating powdered mixtures of zirconium hydride and boron in quartz tubes in a hydrogen atmosphere. For temperatures above 1400°C, reactions were carried out in graphite molds. Carbon contamination from the molds was minimized by employing extremely rapid heating rates to reduce carbon diffusion into the body of the specimen, and by subsequent "shaving" of sample surfaces that had been in contact with the graphite dies. A heating rate of about 2000°C per min was obtained by heating the dies (by direct conduction), using a current of 40,000 amp. Although this type of heating cycle apparently allowed little time for "homogenization," close approximations to equilibrium conditions were usually obtained as a result of the very strongly exothermic reactions between zirconium hydride and boron at elevated temperatures. Reproducibility of results in repeated runs under varying conditions was taken as a reasonable indication that equilibrium conditions had been effectively achieved. Quenching was accomplished by rapidly immersing the entire die, containing the reaction products, in water. Specimens could also be cooled at controlled rates by adjustment of the rate of flow of water through the water-cooled copper electrodes in contact with the graphite dies.

The object of this study is to investigate the effect of prior tensile strain on the fracture stress of a metal. This is done in a theoretical manner starting from the point of view developed by the author in his thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals. The results are compared with experimental findings and a rational interpretation is given to work that shows the variation of fracture stress with prior tensile strain. Theory op Fracture In the thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals developed earlier,' it was shown that a critical strain energy per unit volume exists. This is characteristic of the material and may be calculated from basic thermodynamic data. When the area under the flow curve reaches this characteristic value, fracture occurs. The general criterion for fracture is expressed in the form « ± u. = JLJW/V [r] where L, is the latent heat of melting of the unit volume, AV/V is the ratio of the change in volume of the unit volume to the original unit volume on passing from the solid to the liquid state, uo is an initial energy density, and J is a conversion factor, which changes energy from heat to mechanical units. As a first approximation, it will he assumed that the stress-strain curve is the straight line that extends from the point of maximum load onward, extrapolated back to the axis of zero strain, for example, line AC of Fig. I. If the point of intersection of the straight line with the axis of zero strain is represented by v., and the slope of the straight line is p, the analytic form of the flow curve is a = (To + pd [2] and the strain energy per unit volume evaluated from Jud6 becomes (u,6 + pa2/2). When this latter term reaches the critical value JLbVIV (designated hereafter by M), it is assumed that fracture occurs. The principles on which an art is founded are usually few and necessarily basic in nature, but he who wishes to achieve the power to select his aides and give success to important undertakings that may be entrusted to him in the future must ordinarily undergo years of drudgery in order to gain the experience that will enable him to distinguish such fundamentals through the haze of reenforcing detail that clothes and tends to disguise them. This especially applies to those who would dream dreams that may come partly true. Professor Henry B. Cornwall of Princeton was a graduate of Freiberg with mining experience in Mexico. He was my friend and mentor during my college life. In 1883 I finished my postgraduate course and had two offers of work to consider. His advice is very clear in my mind today. It was essentially as follows: I know something of the mines of Mexico and have crossed through the mountains of the West. The West possesses a vast area of mountain and valley. California has long had its gold mines, the Comstock and Gilpin County followed and now comes the discovery of Leadville. I believe the West, will become a great mining country. You can choose now to teach here or go to the mountains. Were I in your place I would go West and identify myself with mining.

The wmk is concerned with the estimate of the degee of continuity of a particulate phase dispersed in a matrix. The first section is a verieu: of the parameters nzeasurable by quantitative rnetallogvaphy, namely the contact area and, under certain conditions, the number of contacts between particles of one phase. In the second section, the frequency of particle contacts is related to the degee of continuity of a randomly embedded phase orz the basis of the lattice-percolation model of Hamrnersley and others. THE extent of continuity of the constituent phases may greatly influence the structure-sensitive properties of phase mixtures, particularly if the phase properties differ significantly. An example from the literature1 is shown in Fig. 1. The marked decrease of the electrical resistivity of sintered silver-alumina bodies near 25 pct by volume of silver presumably occurs because the more conductive phase changes from a discontinuous to a continuous structure. Other example of electrical- and thermal-conductivity transitions are cited by kingery In view of these observations, a knowledge and understanding of the connectivity of the microstructure may be of considerable practical importance. This study is concerned with one aspect of the genera1 problem, namely the estimate of the degree of continuity of a particulate phase dispersed in an opaque matrix. The first section reviews the parameters measurable on a polished cross section by auantitative metallography, such as the contact area and under certain conditions, the number of contacts between particles of one phase. In the second section, an attempt is made to relate the frequency of particle contacts to the degree of continuity of a randomly embedded phase. For the purpose of this discussion, the aggregate has two constituents: the particulate phase and the matrix. The latter is considered to be homogeneous. The term "particle" is used with the meaning of "grain", i.e., a minute unit of matter which is usually a single crystal of a readily distinguishable substance within the confines of a simply connected boundary. While many of the concepts which are used here to describe the structural variables characterizing the microstructure of phase mixtures are qualitative and ill-defined, they are presented with the intent of stimulating further work of a more general and rigorous nature. I) PARTICLE CONTACT, CONTIGUITY, AND MEAN FREE PATH 1) Measurement of Contiguity. The fraction of the total internal surface of a phase a shared with particles of that same phase in a two-phase mixture of and $ is indicated by the contiguity ratio:3 whereis the area of the interface between o particles, and Sap is the area of the interface between a particles and matrix P, per unit volume of mixture. The contiguity ratio ranges from 0 to 1 as the distribution of the a phase changes from a completely dispersed to a completely agglomerated structure. The interfacial areas may be obtained from simple intercept measurements on a random plane, after Smith and Guttman where and N are the numbers of intercepts between a random line of unit length on a plane of polish and the interparticle and interphase interfaces, respectively. The equations are valid for any distribution of particle sizes and shapes.

Network topology is introduced and used to describe sinter bodies at various stages of the sintering process. The matrices of incidence, loop-branch. tree-branch, and cut-branch are constructed and their relationship to the three-dimensional void space and the common two-dimensional bounding surface is established. The sintering body is assunzed to remain connected but this is not so with the void space. The topological invariants known as Betti numbers are related to this observed fact and provide parameters which measure the progress of the sintering process. They are extracted from the matrices by means of known algebraic operations. Experimental procedures are given which permit actual construction of the various matrices and determination of the Betti numbers by serial sectioning of the sinter bodies. A sinter body is produced by exposing a large number of metallic particles (0.00001 to 0.3 in. diam) to a temperature that is near but below their melting point. When these particles are maintained at such a temperature for a sufficient length of time, it is found that the interparticle contacts become welded. As time increases, these welds, often referred to as necks, grow. All of the space between the particles constitutes a single connected void; an ultimate consequence of sintering is the breaking up of the void into separated parts. A mathematical apparatus for describing the geometric characteristics of a sinter body at each stage of the process was first proposed by F. N. Rhinesl when he introduced the application of topology to this problem. He described the sinter body in terms of one of its topological invariants, the genus. The most important advantage of a topological description is invariance with respect to continuous deformations. This means that particle sizes and shapes need not be considered, resulting in considerable simplification and generalization of the geometric description. In the case of a sinter body, wherein the internal geometry is particularly complex, the simplification provided by topological concepts is absolutely essential. The important parameters in the Rhines model are the number of particles and the interparticle contacts. The invariant considered called genus is given by Euler's formula for the connectivity of two-dimensional surface of the sinter body. This surface includes the pore-solid interface. The Euler formula is G = C - P + 1 [1] where C = number of interparticle contacts, P = number of particles, and G = genus of the surface bounding the sinter body. In topology the term genus may be used to mean the number of self re-entrant cuts that can be made on a closed surface without dissecting it into more than one connected surface. Its use is restricted to the surface and does not apply to the three-dimensional volume enclosed or excluded by it. In the case of sintering, the volume enclosed by the surface is defined as the sinter body; the volume excluded will be referred to as the void space. There is an intrinsic reason for using genus as a characteristic number associated with a sinter body. The genus is related to the Gaussian curvature by the integral of the product of the principal curvatures taken over the entire surface of the sinter body, as given by

Samules of liquid and gas were obtained from the primary separator of a well in the Paloma field. The volumetric properties of the samples and of six systematically chosen mixtures of the samples were experimentally determined at 100°, 190°, and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. From these data the influence ,of pressure and temperature upon the composition and specific volume of the bubble-point liquid and of the retrograde dew-point gas was established, The formation volumes and gas-oil ratios of the rnixtures investigated were calculated on the basis of the plant-product oil, which is defined as the isobutane and less volatile portion of each mixture. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form. The volumetric behavior of the mixture corresponding to that produced by the well at the time of sampling was determined for 235ºF., the reported reservoir temperature, by graphical interpolation of the experimental data with respect to composition and temperature. The results indicate that the well-production mixture probably existed as a gas at its retrograde dew point under the conditions of temperature and pressure believed to prevail in the producing zone at the time of sampling. The effect upon the phase behavim occasioned by the omission from the well-production mixture of certain components of intermediate molecular weight was investigated. In the first case, all of the isobutane and 11-butane, and substantially all of the iso-pentane, were removed from the mixture of trap samples corresponding to the well production. In the second case, all the propane, isobutane and n-butane, and substantially all of the isopentane, were removed. Both modifications led to considerable increases in the retrograde dew-point Pressure at 235ºF.; an increase of 558 lb. Per sq. in. above that of the unmodified well-production mixture in the first case, and an increase of 1208 lb. Per sq. in. in the second. It was concluded that the material? remaining after the removal of certain components of intermediate molecular weight could not be injected back into the reservoir in the saqe proportion in which they were produced without entailing appreciable loss of liquid material through condensation within the formation. Introduction Under the usual conditions of production practice, petroleum arrives at the surface of the earth in a physical state considerably different from that in which it existed in the underground reservoir. The relative rates of production and the properties of oil and gas measured at surface conditions do not constitute, in general, even a qualitative description of the fluids existing in the reservoir. The estimation of reserves and the attainment of optimum efficiency with regard to rate, quantity, and cost of production require accurate data concerning the physical properties of petroleum throughout large changes in pressure and temperature. Many schemes have been devised for predicting the behavior of propane, as it is encountered in nature? but the experimental work upon which these predictions are based has not, for the most part, been extended to the higher pressures that occur in practice, nor do these methods permit, as yet, the estima-
