The volume-diffusion coefficients of Nb-95 and Ta-182 in niobium have been measured over the temperature range 878° to 2400°C. High-temperature specimens (T 21500°C) were sectioned by conventional lathe and grinding techniques while low-temperature specimens were sectioned by an anodizing and stripping technique previously described. Over a range of more than ten orders of magnitude in diffusivity, the self-diffusion data is well-represented by the equation: D = (1.1+ 0.2) exp [- (96,000 * 900)/RT ] cm2/sec Upward deviations from this line are explained by short-circuit diffusion in combination with the loss of resolution of the sectioning techniques. Oxygen contamination within the range 100 to 450 ppm was found to have little or no effect on the self-diffusivitj 01 niobium. In a limited number of measurements, the diffusivity of Ta-182 in niobium was found to be about half that of Nb-95 in niobium. These data may be described by D = (I.0+0.90.5)exp [- (99,300 * 2400) /RT ] PREVIOUSLY reported studies of self-diffusion in niobium were by Resnick and Castleman1 and Peart, Graham, and Tomlin.2 The data of Resnick and Castleman over a temperature range 1585" to 2120°C show considerable scatter but. can be represented by D = (12.4 *0.8) exp [-(105,000+3OOO)/RT] cm2/sec The limited data of Peart, Graham, and Tomlin follow the equation D = 1.3 exp (-95,00O/RT) cm2/sec In view of recent diffusion data for ß zirconium3 and 0 titanium4 in which Arrhenius-type plots do not yield straight lines and of the potential high- temperature uses of niobium and its alloys, we thought it important to investigate the diffusion behavior of this bcc refractory metal over a large temperature range. This has recently been done for molybdenum,5 chromium,6 vanadium,"" and tantalum.9 Niobium was a particularly suitable material for this study largely because of the development of an anodizing and stripping sectioning technique which enables diffusivities as small as l0-19' sq cm per sec to be determined accurately.10 In addition to self-diffusion data, data were obtained for the diffusion of Ta-182 in niobium and for the effect of varying oxygen content on self-diffusion. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The niobium was obtained from three sources: 1) melting stock from Shieldalloy Corp., 2) electron-beam melted single crystals, 1/2 in. diameter, from Semi-Elements, Inc., and 3) oxygen-doped, electron-beam melted single crystals from Materials Research Corp. The melting stock was electron-beam melted and specimens 5/8 in. diameter by 1/2 in. long were machined from the center of the bar. The analysis supplied by the vendor and an interstitial analysis of one of the specimens are given in Table I. The single crystals (type 2 above) were cut with a jeweler's saw to specimens about 3/8 in. long. The interstitial analysis of this material is given in Table 11. This material was used

THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is, relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.1 Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.2 Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general; development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy. mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions.3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west. of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of-the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.2,3 The axis of the syncline dips to thee southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.4 Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary, band of secondary clays found intermittently, at points, across the, south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.8 In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to. 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.9 It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

Extensive data of minimum creep rates and rupture times for high purity and commercial aluminum confirm the existence of a transition range from the low temperature-type to the high temperature-type behavior. The data are analyzed in line with the suggested theories of deformation of metals. CONSIDERABLY more work has been done on the rupture and creep behavior of commercial alloys than on the less complex, high purity metals. As a result, certain fundamental behaviors are overlooked. One of the lesser known variables affecting the high temperature behavior of metals is the impurity content (or alloy content). Impurities are known to affect strongly the recrystallization temperature, electrical resistivity, and other properties of metals, but the effect on creep and other high temperature mechanical properties has been determined for very few materials. In view of these facts aluminum appears to be a fairly ideal metal, since it is available in a wide range of purity contents from 99.995+ down through the 2s (99.0 + Al) and 3s (1.2 Mn) grades in small steps. It is highly resistant to oxidation and other surface instabilities, leaving recrystallization and grain growth as virtually the only instabilities. Control of grain size is also well standardized. Limited data on the creep of aluminum have been obtained by Dushman et a1.l for high purity aluminum; by Sherby2 on 2s aluminum of variable grain size; and by Dorn and Tietz³ on cold-worked 3s aluminum. Experimental Procedure The apparatus consisted of a constant stress, creep testing unit similar to the type described by Hop-kin.' The specimens were held at temperature for 30 min before loading. The loading time was less than 2 min. Factors affecting the accuracy of the data were: 1-—the temperature gradient and control, ± 3°F; 2-the stress determinations, ± 1.5 pct; and 3—elongation measurements (1 in. gage), ? 0.001 in. Three grades of aluminum were tested: 1— high purity (99.995 pct Al), 2—2s (99.3 pct Al), and 3—3s (98.2 pct Al). The spectrographic analyses of these materials are reported in Table I. The specimens were annealed then electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing. Data on heat treatments and grain size obtained appear in Table 11. The entire creep curve was determined for almost all of the tests. A few tests were interrupted after the beginning of the third stage of creep, and in these cases the rupture time was estimated. Experimental Results Constant stress creep-rupture testing gives a much longer, more accurately measurable second stage of creep than constant load testing. This behavior is in agreement with the results obtained by Andrade for lead (see Fig. 1). If the test is run to completion, the third stage of creep appears as soon as stress intensification occurs. In the case of specimens which fail in a ductile manner, the stress intensification begins when the sample starts "necking". This differs from the "high temperature brittle" specimens in which the stress intensification is caused by intercrystalline cracking. These specimens

CELL depth has been for many years a controversial question in a flotation-machine performance. In the impeller type of machine, we are really talking about impeller submergence-i.e., the depth in the pulp at which the impeller is required to produce aeration. THE FLOTATION MACHINE A COMPRESSOR A flotation machine can be considered as an air compressor or blower in which the aeration mechanism takes in air under atmospheric pressure[t] (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and blows it into the pulp (the pulp being the receiver) against a head of 14.7 plus cell depth in feet times 0.4333 lb. per sq. inch. In commercial machines the impeller is submerged in the pulp to depths ranging from about 2 ft. in the smaller machines to as much as 5 ft. in some of the larger ones. In the 2-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head on the impeller is (2 X 1.25 =) 2.50 ft. (assuming a pulp density of 1.25), equal to (2.50 X 0.4333 =) 1.078 lb. per sq. in. For the 5-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must make air is (5 X 1.25 X 0.4333 =) 2.708 lb. per sq. inch. In the small 2-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (1.078 [-] 0.147 + 0.01078 =) 6.85 per cent and in the large, 5-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (2.708 [=] 0.147 + 0.02708 =) 15.5 per cent. It is obvious that for unit volume of free air intake the larger machine receives a lesser (8.65 per cent less) volume of aeration* than the smaller machine. The bubbles in escaping from the pulp expand and are greater in volume at the surface than at the moment of their formation in the pulp; 7.33 and 18.4 per cent larger, respectively, in the small and large machines. Just how this situation affects flotation is not known. It is interesting to note, however, that the bubbles are smaller in the zone of the coarsest particles and largest in the upper zones of the finer, more easily suspended mineral particles. It would seem that the relationship might be reversed advantageously. The deep cell is at a greater disadvantage in this respect than the shallow cell. Nothing, however, presumably can be done about this situation. The shallow cell is a partial corrective. Not only does the compression ratio of aeration increase with impeller submergence but the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must operate also increases. Lithium chemical plant extraction methods are discussed with reference to 1) base exchange with alkali sulphates; 2) processing based on roasting with lime; 3) miscellaneous methods; and 4) application of the Lithium Corp. process to extraction of lithium from run-of-mine, low grade spodumene ore, or concentrates. IN the early days of the lithium industry most of the production was from lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and amblygonite. Nearly all the early extraction processes described in the literature involve heating the finely ground mineral with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. On subsequent water leaching most of the bases present in the mineral (especially aluminum) are dissolved as sulphates. As a result, the leach solution required extensive chemical purification before the lithium could be precipitated as carbonate. Following the remarkable growth of the lithium industry to its present size, zinnwaldite and amblygonite ores must be considered of minor importance only. Attention is now focused on spodumene, abundant enough in North America to be a major source of supply, and there are important supplies of lepidolite and petalite in Africa. The extraction processes described below all apply to spodumene, although several will also operate on other lithium minerals, such as petalite. Base Exchange with Alkali Sulphates: A distinct advance was made with the disclosures of Wadman and von Girsewalt. In these methods the finely ground silicate ore (spodumene or lepidolite) is intimately mixed with an excess of alkali sulphate (usually K2SO4) in at least a 1 to 1 proportion, and the mixture was heated to a relatively high temperature. Base exchange results, with the formation of lithium sulphate. A water leach dissolves the lithium sulphate, together with the excess potassium sulphate. Successful operation of this type of process requires very thorough grinding and mixing, as well as careful temperature control. The use of K2SO4 is objectionable from cost considerations since purification of lithium carbonate requires the use of potassium carbonate, if the K2SO4 is to be recovered and recycled. The lower solubility of K2SO4 as compared with Na2S04 is also objectionable, since it limits the concentration of the Li2SO4 solution to be precipitated by K2SO4. Early laboratory-scale investigation of this process by Lithium Corp. was not encouraging. Other related base exchange processes are those of Lindblad, Wallden, and Sivander3 and Sivander, Gard, Villestad, and Wallen4. The former covers the reaction of lithium silicate minerals with a sodium sulphate solution, at 100" to 300°C (under pressure), while the latter involves the extraction of silicate minerals with molten sodium sulphate. Both these processes would seem to be difficult and expensive to operate.

In the past 15 years there has been a great deal of interest in the fundamentals of plastic flow and rupture in metals and a number of papers have presented substantial advances toward a fundamental insight into the mechanism of these two processes. This paper is an appraisal of the present position with respect to the following: 1. The relative importance of shear and hydrostatic stresses in controlling the plastic flow of metals. 2. The relative importance of shear and hydrostatic stresses in determining the amount of flow before rupture in metals. 3. The use of generalized strains in determining the effect of plastic flow on the work-hardening of metals. FundamentalS Involved in Plastic Flow In attempting to devise a quantitative description of plastic flow in metals, it has been customary to assume that metals are homogeneous and isotropic. The fact that neither of these assumptions is correct complicates the experimental appraisal of relations developed. Nevertheless, as will be shown, metals are close enough '0 being isotropic and homogeneous so that considerable insight into the mechanism of plastic flow can be obtained. The assumptions of isotropy and homogeneity allow both the elastic and plastic behavior of metals to be described in terms of 12 variables—six being stress variables, and six being strain variables. From this viewpoint, it should be possible to represent the stress-strain relations in the plastic range for metals by a surface in 12 dimensions. One boundary of this surface would be the surface of transition from elastic to plastic behavior; the other would be the surface of rupture. These two surfaces would be joined by the surface of plastic flow. The shape of this composite surface would depend on the test temperature and speed of straining This paper is concerned only with results obtained at constant temperature and constant speed of straining. While such a representation is conceivable, the demonstration of such a surface would present almost insurmountable obstacles. The most fruitful simplification of this concept has been the recognition that the behavior of metals in the plastic region is primarily a result of shear stresses and strains. Based on this viewpoint, it is possible to utilize stress and strain invariants that are independent of hydrostatic components to define an effective stress and strain. In effect, this amounts to reducing the task of representing stresses and strains in 12 dimensions to one of representation in two dimensions. THE purpose of this study was to measure the vapor pressure of silver as the first step in the determination of activities in silver alloys and to test the limitations of the method adopted. In order to work at low pressures, below 2x10-2 mm of mercury, the orifice effusion technique was employed. To shorten the time of collection of silver from the atomic beam, radioactive silver (Ag110) was used as a tracer. The rate of effusion of a monatomic vapor from an "ideal" orifice, where the thickness of the orifice edge is negligible compared with the orifice diameter, can be readily calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, G = vM a p/v2pRT where G is the weight of material effusing from the orifice per unit time; p is the vapor pressure at oven temperature, T; R is the gas constant; M is the molecular weight of the vapor; and a is the orifice area. Consolidating constants and expressing as the weight of material effusing from the orifice in a period of time, t, (5.83)(10-2) (vM) (a) (t) (p)/vT where GT is total weight of monatomic vapor effused (g); M is molecular weight of the effusing tracer vapor; a is orifice area (cm2); t is time of effusion (sec); p is vapor pressure of effusing material (mm of Hg); and T is oven temperature (OK). The vapor effuses from the orifice in a hemispherical pattern, and the intensity of the beam in any direction is given by the cosine distribution law.' Considering this, the weight of effused material can be calculated from the amount of material passing through a circular collimator intersecting the beam. If such a collimator is in a plane parallel to the plane of the orifice and with center on the normal to the orifice center, GT = G?/1-cos2? = G?/sin2? where G? is the weight of effused material passing through the collimator, and 0 is one half the apex angle of the cone defined by the collimator circumference and the orifice center. The public is already familiar with the general fact that the scope and the financial resources of the approaching St. Louis World's Fair are much larger than those of any of the preceding great expositions; and both the visitor and the exhibitor, when he comes to St. Louis in 1904, will find it to be a real World's Pair, with exhibits and visitors from every known country. Passing over the subject, as to the general Exposition, with this brief statement, I ask Sour attention to the consideration of a few important facts connected with the proposed mining exhibits at this Exposition. The object of this paper is to present, a survey of some of the physical properties of sheet nickel silver when subjected to cold rolling and when annealed at temperatures extending from 350" C. throughout the coininercial annealing range.. A number of alloys were taken from stock and analyzed. Four of these, representing low nickel and high nickel both with and without lead, were chosen for the tests. The bars (which were then coiled) were annealed together in a mill muffle and afterwards pickled in a 10 per cent. sulfuric-acid solution and cold rolled in stages of approximately one number (B. & S.) at a time to No. 18 B. & S. gage. After each stage, suitable samples were set aside for physical tests. Additional samples were chosen for tests after the bars were rolled to Nos. 8, 10, 12, and 14 gage. These samples were annealed together in the mill muffle and, after pickling, were finished on 0.050-in. gage, yielding a series of specimens 2, 4, 6, and 8 numbers hard for the subsequent annealing tests. Tensile test pieces 9 by 1 in. (22.9 by 2.5 cm.) were cut from both lots and the central portion was milled to give a test section 2 1/2 in. long by 1/2 in. wide. A distance of 2 in. was marked off on the edge of each specimen with light punch marks. In the case of the annealed alloys, Erichsen test pieces 4 by 235 in. were also taken.

THE oxidation of pyritic sulphur associated with coal is important for the following reasons: 1. It is the predominant cause for the formation of acid mine drainage issuing from bituminous coal seams. This drainage pollutes the streams in coal regions, making the water unfit for industrial purposes and causing the disappearance of fish and wild life. As a consequence the movement of industry and especially recreational industry, so important to the population of these areas as an alternative means of livelihood, is impeded. 2. It is instrumental in effecting a series of reactions, which bring about the degradation and ultimately result in the spontaneous combus-tion of bituminous coal in storage. 3. It contributes to the breaking and shattering of the coal structure and is one of the causes of roof falls and floor lifts in mines. 4. It is the primary cause of the many nuisances associated with gob piles and the refuse of cleaning plants. 5. Its proper control and application might possibly be employed in the preparation of coal to reduce the inorganic sulphur content. The research that has been conducted on the oxidation of the various forms of iron sulphides is extensive and the literature voluminous. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to determine experimentally and with some precision the mechanism of the reaction under the condi-tions of its occurrence in bituminous coal mines. It has generally been accepted that the oxidation of pyritic sulphur proceeds according to the reaction 2FeS2 + 21120 + 702 --> 2FeSO4 + 2H2S04 [1] The ferrous sulphate in the drainage streams is further oxidized by air to produce ferric hydroxide and more acid. Yet the literature fails to dis-close any pertinent investigation on the mechanism of this reaction. The present contribution is concerned primarily with this aspect of the problem and while the work to be reported is not yet complete, it has yielded results from which interesting and significant conclusions may be drawn.

During the early history of the Lake Superior district, tamarack timber was used almost exclusively in the wines. It had the strength and lasting qualities necessary for a satisfactory mining timber. But about fifteen years ago the tamarack trees were attacked by a blight which killed nearly all of them so today no tamarack timber is available. Hemlock, spruce, and poplar have neither the necessary strength nor the lasting qualities for mining timber, but a large supply of maple and birch is available. These have ample strength but, when placed underground, fail by decay in about three years. This means that, instead of replacing the timber sets once in fifteen years, it must be done five or more times in the same space of time which involves not only incraesed timber costs but more important, an increased labor cost.

DURING an investigation of the U-Co-A1, U-Ir-A1, and U-Ni-A1 ternary systems, three previously unknown phases have been identified which correspond to the phases UCoA1, UIrA1, and UNiA1, and which be- long to the C22 (Fe2P) type (P 6 2m). In the following the structure determination of the new ternary phases is reported. The alloys have been prepared in an arc furnace under purified argon from 99.97 wt pct U, 99.83 wt pct Co, 99.99 wt pct Al, 99.95 wt pct Ni, and 99.97 wt pct Ir. The pellets obtained were bright and brittle; chemical analyses agreed with the nominal compositions. To obtain equilibrium, the samples were annealed in evacuated quartz capsules at 950°C for 30 hr and then quenched in water. Guinier photographs were processed and evaluated according to a method already described previously.1,2 The hkl's, measured and calculated sin2 6 values, and in the case of UCoAl only calculated and estimated intensities, are given in Tables I to 111. Lattice parameters refined according to the least-squares method and the respective mean-square variations are presented in Table IV. Lattice parameters, especially the c/a ratio, lead to the assumption that the three phases are crystallizing in the C22-type structure. For the calculation of the intensities given in Table I, the atomic positions recently reported by wyckoff3 have been accepted for the C22 (Fe2P) type. The uranium atoms were assumed to be in phosphorus sites; furthermore the scattering amplitudes of the boron atoms have been averaged in the stoichiometric formula UB2 according to atomic percentages; i.e., for these atoms a statistical distribution on the iron sites was assumed. The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-l,ol~ate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHC0............................................ 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M XaHCOr, 1 pa.rt 0.1 M NaZCO?................. 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCOs, 2 parts 0.1 M iVa.,C03. ................ 10.0 0.1 M Na2C0............................................. 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade. West Texas was the scene of greatly increased oil activity during 1937, producing 75,743,000 bb1.l in that year as compared with 61,901,-000 bb1.2 in 1936, an increase of 22.36 per cent. The annual total of wells completed increased from 15863 in 1936 to 28062 in 1937, an increase of 76.92 per cent. Of the total completions in 1937, 2464 were oil wells,2 11 gas wells2 and 331 dry holes.2 The marked increase in the number of oil wells completed in West Texas during 1937 had a substantial effect upon the daily average production per well, which decreased 20.84 per cent from December 1936, when a total of 5310 wells3 produced 5,236,467 bbl.3 for an average of 31.81 bbl. per well per day to December 1937, when 7571 wells2 with a total production of 5,910,257 bb1.2 averaged 25.18 bbl. per well per day. Drilling blocks and checkerboard acreage were being acquired following geophysical work in the northern end of the Permian Basin area, composed of Bailey, Cochran, Hockley, Yoakum and Terry Counties, presaging extension of active development northward. During 1937, at one time 30 geophysical crews were working in West Texas, and an average of 15 to 20 crews was active in this area throughout the year. Discoveries Wasson-Denver Field.—Wasson-Denver field in Gaines and Yoakum Counties was the outstanding field discovery of the year. Production is from porous limestone found at about 5000 ft., and an average well is good for from 300 to 500 bbl. of crude oil per day through 3/4-in. choke. The discovery well was drilled by A. G. Carter and others on the Wasson Ranch, Gaines County, and the field has since been extended into Yoakum County. At the year's end 21 wells had been completed, producing

The wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Coppcr Mining Co. in Butte, Mont, are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 1/2-in. rope. 5 main hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 6 shafts using 11/8-in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 11/8-in. rope. 15 shafts using 1-in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8-in. rope. 1 shaft using 3/4-in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines wing 5/8-in, 3/4-in., 7/8-in., and 1-in. (15.9, 10, 22, and 25 mm) rope. THe flat ropes run from 1/2 by 71/2 in. (12.7 by 1905 mm.) to-3/8 by 4 1/2-in (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting engines, which arc set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties ill operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes. In general, the practice in Butte is to use hoisting engines equipped with 12-ft. (3 7 m.) cast-iron drums, smooth faced, for 11/2-in. rope and 6-ft. cast-iron drums, smooth faced, lagged with 3/8-in. steel plate for 11/4 l1/8 and 1-in.
