Under sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy, a new type of rotary rock drill was developed by The Bendix Corp. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. It allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. This paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal, metal/nonmetal mining, and for civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

RECENT work on borate deposits near Kramer, in the extreme southeast corner of Kern County, California, is of special interest to those who are making a study of the mode of origin of the borate minerals colemanite and ulexite. A valuable clue to the mode of origin of colemanite in its present known deposits is given in a paper by W. F. Foshag1, of the United States National Museum. Colemanite is found in or near original deposits of ulexite, from which it is supposed to have been derived by a change in the rate of movement or the character of the ground water. Indications that an alteration of this sort had produced colemanite were first recognized by the writer' in specimens collected in the Kramer district in 1920, and sent to W. T. Schaller, at U. S. Geological Survey, for identification. The identity of the two borate minerals in these specimens was not at once determined, but the relations of the minerals as seen in the specimens afforded a manifest clue to the origin of the deposits. Similar specimens were obtained by the writer from deposits in death Valley soon after he had examined the deposits near Kramer. After studying the specimens submitted to him Dr. Schaller wrote as follows: "I have finally positively identified the boron minerals you sent me with your letter of Sept. 27. The `white fibrous mineral like ulexite' is ulexite; the harder nodules' in the clay are colemanite, apparently formed from the ulexite as a result of leaching, with recrystallization in place-a theory that Foshag is working on." The present paper is a report on the facts observed at. the deposits near Kramer, and some general observations on the geological relations noted, which, unfortunately, still form only a very incomplete record.

The history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. 'She elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,090 tons of 012 and 18,000 tons Of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4½-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. Equipment On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-diii~lp trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4½-cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

THE Republic district, Washington, is of new interest because of the discovery of new gold-silver ore within a unique structural pattern. The camp was revived in 1937 following installation of a plant to treat low-grade disseminated ore at Knob Hill and further stimulation followed discovery of "cross vein" breccia ores in 1939. Previous writers 1-2 ascribed the quartz veins to a latite porphyry stock, but are in disagreement as to its precise location and extent. This study leads to the conclusion that the ores have a more profound parentage linked to a broad system of thrust faults and folds, the mechanical origin of which is related to a southward trending (Sanpoil) syncline connecting with the Lewis and Clark zone of shift described by Billingsley and Locke3 in 1939. The Republic anticline and a cross anticline recumbent against Cretaceous granodiorite, and involving some 4000 ft of Eocene andesite flows and early Miocene lake beds, localize the ores, mainly along the east flank, in a series of openings simulating drag folds and steeper than the folded flows. These broad structural features no doubt reach deeply into the basement rocks, where at appropriate crossings and junctions it is suggested that heat effects gave rise to oremaking materials, including, in this instance, intrusive breccias that later were mineralized, and comprising the broader bodies of new ores. The breccia ore is seen crosscutting the earlier narrow quartz veins with a welding of the two at junction areas by a second surge of ore minerals. The ore mined and developed since 1937 equals district production from 1896 to 1937. The ores are typified by cherty quartz, adularia and some barite, with fine pyrite and marcasite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite and gold. Selenium is present, possibly with gold, as a normal selenide. The disseminated ores, as well as the vein and breccia ores, are localized principally in one 500-ft flow (Knob Hill andesite), which has been traced around the crest of the low northward-plunging Republic anticline. The gold-silver ratio in the earlier narrow veins is about 1 to 4 and in the disseminated and breccia ores, 1 to 7. The latter higher silver ratio is deemed to reflect the character of the second surge of mineralization. Sills and dikes of the Columbia River (Miocene) basalt cut the folded structure and ore, thus placing the mineralization in the middle Miocene.

By computing the values of the resolved shear stress for a great many orientations of the tensile axis on all 12 (111) <110> slip systems, Taylor and Elam&apos; were able to map out a stereogram of slip systems, given here, Fig. 1, in Diehl&apos;s notation (see, for example Hauser and Jackson&apos;). The purpose of the present note is to derive such a stereogram by mathematical reasoning and to give a simple method of defining the system with highest resolved shear stress for any direction of the tensile axis, thereby eliminating tedious computation of the Schmid factor. Let the tensile axis, of direction cosines [xyz], make the angles 0 and relative to the slip plane normal [HKL] and the slip direction [hkl] respectively. Fig. 2 shows a simple cubic cell whose edges define a Cartesian coordinate system. Let A be a unit vector of origin 0 supported by the tensile axis. Its end point [xyz] then lies on a sphere of unit radius, on the positive hemisphere of which the planes z = 0, x = y, y = z limit the so called primitive triangle of a standard [loo] stereographic projection. Abstract-An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits, and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes programs for fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various hypothetical properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. It is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation.

The mechanism of materials transport was studied in a model experiment in which a silver sphere was sintered to a silver plate under an applied external stress near 800° C. For this purpose the rate of growth of the neck between the sphere and the plate which is proportional to the strain rate of the creep process involved in a neck growth was determined by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the away. This rate of neck growth will depend upon the magnitude of the applied external stress. By measuring the rate just before and just after a change in the external load and therefore the applied stress, the relationship between strain rate and stress can be derived. For material transport by slip in a pure metal it is expected that the strain rate should be proportional to the 4.5th power of the stress, while for transport by diffusional flow the strain rate should be proportional to the first power of the stress. It was found that for stresses above 5 X 10&apos; dynes per sq cm (70 psi) the exponent in the stvain rate-stress relationship was near 4.5 while for a stress of 0.7 x 108 dynes per sq cm (10 psi) an exponent of 1.8 was determined indicating that under the conditions of the experiment the transport mechanism for creep in silver shifts from diffusional flow to slip in the region of 0.7 x 106 dynes per sq cm (10 psi). The importance of these findings for an understanding of the mechanism of material transport in conventional sintering (without an external load) is pointed out. In a paper by Early et al.,&apos; the mechanism of material transport during sintering was treated as a creep process. It was pointed out that two possible types of creep processes could operate during sintering. In one of these material transport takes place by vacancy diffusion due to a gradient in chemical potential. The vacancy sinks in this diffusion process may be either grain boundaries, as in Herring-Nabarro microcreep, or regions beneath a surface of small radius of curvature. The diffusive transport may be by volume, grain boundary, or surface diffusion. In the other mechanism, creep takes place by slip, i.e., dislocation motion with its rate generally controlled by dislocation climb. One method of distinguishing between these two modes of materials transport is to investigate the creep rate, i.e., the rate of material transport as a function of stress. For material transport by vacancy diffusion, the creep rate is proportional to the stress.&apos; For creep by slip, controlled by dislocation climb, the creep rate is proportional to a power of the stress. For pure metals this power is 4.5;374 for dispersion-strengthened material a fourth power relationship can be derived.5 This difference in the stress dependence of the strain rate is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, in which the logarithm of strain rate is plotted vs the logarithm of the stress for material transport in a pure metal by vacancy flux and by dislocation climb. The stress range in which the two types of material transport overlap would be expected to be relatively small. In the experiments described by Early and coworkers compacts pressed from spherical copper powder were sintered isothermally under an applied axial external load in a dilatometer. During sintering the magnitude of the applied external load was changed and the rate of axial shrinkage of the compact before and after the load change determined. In order to find the stress dependence of the strain rate the magnitude of the stress acting on the neck area between the spherical particles before and after the load change had to be calculated. This stress is the resultant of the stresses due both to the externally applied load and to surface tension. The stress due to surface tension is a function of the geometry of the powder compacts. It can be determined, at least for simple geometrical arrays,&apos;76 but it is difficult to obtain exact values of the stresses for actual powder compacts when only average values of particle diameters and of neck diameters between particles are available. The calculation of stress and the strain rate-stress relationship is therefore only very approximate.

A suspension electrolysis method has been developed which enabled a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrate and simultaneously oxidized sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigation was performed in a laboratory-scale electrolytic cell, where the zinc sulfide concentrate particles (chemical composition in weight percent: 61.1% Zn, 2.3% Fe, 30.6% S, 3.4% SiO2 were suspended with or without graphite powder in a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. The main parts of the cylindrical electrolytic cell are shown in [Fig. 1]. The cathode (1), a rod of aluminum, is set at the center of the cell. Creep of copper under 75 to 1.50 kg per sq cm stresses at temperatures near the melting point was found to he a complex reaction controlled by three mechanisms acting in parallel. In order of appearance with decreasing temperature, the auerage activation energies, Qc , are 168, 79, and 24 kcal per mole. Stress dependence of the minimum creep rate was found to he an exponential for the two high-Qc processes and a power law for the low-Qc, process. Transition of control occurs from one mechanism to another. The relative transition temperature depends upon the applied stress, and the range oiler which the transition occurs depends upon the difference in the activation energies of the mechanisms. The creep behavior at high temperature is explained by the climb of dislocations through thermally or mechanically formed jogs, CREEP in pure fcc metals at temperatures in excess of one half the absolute melting point is normally controlled by dislocation c1imb.1,2 A climb model which seems applicable, according to an extensive analysis of data,3 was derived by Weert-man.4 This model assumes jog-saturated dislocations and predicts an activation energy, Qc, nearly equal to that for self-diffusion, USd. Although the requirement of jog saturation is restrictive, agreement between theory and experiment seems adequate. Many other theoretical treatments, including an early model by Mott,5 include detailed consideration of jog formation as an initial requirement for climb. These models predict activation energies for creep which differ from those of self-diffusion. Seeger6,7 postulates an observed activation energy related to the stacking-fault energy. Thus, Usd <Qc<5Usd + Uj where Uj is the jog-formation energy. Seeger incorporated qualitatively the influence of the relative numbers of thermal and athermal jogs. Expanding this concept, Shoeck8 explicitly states a function based on formation mode and relative numbers of vacancies: e r ci exp {-uf/k T} exp {-Um/k T} [ 1 ] where Uf and Um are energies of vacancy formation and migration, respectively. The concentration of jogs, Cj, depends upon the manner of jog production. For intersection jogs, Cj is not sensitive E. R. GILBERT, Junior Member AIME, formerly with De- to temperature; for thermal jogs, Cj is proportional to exp {—Uj /k T}. Schoeck regards each mode as a distinct mechanism; therefore, the mechanisms may act together.299 The diversity predicted by theory, surprisingly, has not been substantiated by experimental results. A significant investigation must include the extremes in stacking-fault energy. Extensive creep studies of aluminum10 and nickel,11,12 high stacking-fault energy metals, have been made. Comparable studies on a low stacking-fault energy metal, such as copper, have not. It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of the creep of copper under conditions which favor thermal jogs. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical compression creep specimens (0.240 in. in diameter by 0.400 in. long) were machined from cold-drawn rods of electrolytic tough-pitch copper containing 0.0007 Mg, 0.002 Fe, 0.001 Ni, 0.0005 Ag, Cd < 0.005, and Pb < 0.005 wt pct impurities. Undetected spectrographically was a nominal 0.04 wt pct 0, which occurs as a Cu2O constituent distributed discontinuously at grain boundaries. Vacuum annealing at 900°C for 15 min produced a stable 0.03-mm average grain diameter. Testing was carried out using apparatus similar to that described by sherby,13 modified by enclosing platens and a push rod in a vacuum cylinder. Normally this arrangement resulted in pressures less than 10 Only a slight surface tarnish, less than 0.0005 in. in thickness, occurred during the test. The applied stress, corrected for atmospheric pressure, was maintained within 2 pct of the desired true stress by the addition of lead shot at fixed strain increments. Creep strain was measured with dial gages as a relative displacement of the upper and lower platens; accuracy of measurement was 0.0001 in. Two creep-test methods were used, the differential or cyclic temperature14 and the isothermal, to obtain creep data at stress levels of 150, 100, and 75 kg per sq cm over the temperature range of 620° to 1032°C. Minimum creep rates were used from both test methods; this was considered proper because comparable temperature tests or cycling to the same temperature gave the same creep rate, within experimental error. The cold vacuum test chamber, with the unstressed specimen in place, was heated to temperature by placing a preheated furnace over the chamber. Temperature equilibrium was attained within 30 min. Equilibrium relations in the system FeO-Fe2O3 Cr2O3 have been determined at 1300°C at oxygen pressures ranging from that of air (0.21 atm) to 1.5 x 10-11 atm. The following oxide phases have stable equilibrium existence under these conditions : a sesquioxide solid solution with corundum-type structure (approximate composition Fe2O3-Cr2O3); a ternary solid solution with spinel-type structure (approximate composition FeO Fe2O3-FeO Cr2O3) and a ternary wüstite solid solution with periclase-type structure and compositions approaching FeO. The metal phase occurring in equilibrium with oxide phase(s) at the lowest oxygen pressures used in the present investigation is almost pure iron. The extent of solid-solution areas and the location of oxygen isobars have been determined. ThE system Fe-Cr-O has attracted a great deal of interest among metallurgists as well as ceramists and geochemists. Metallurgists have studied the system because of its importance in deoxidation equilibria, ceramists because of its importance in basic brick technology, and geochemists because of its importance for an understanding of natural chromite deposits. Chen and chipman1 investigated the Cr-O equilibrium in liquid iron at 1595°C in atmospheres of known oxygen pressures (controlled H2O/H2 ratios). The main purpose of their work was to determine the stability range of the iron-chromite phase. Hilty et al.2 studied oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Cr alloys at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C. They reported the existence of two previously unknown oxide phases, one a distorted spinel with composition intermediate between FeO Cr203 and Cr3O4, the other Cr3O4 with tetragonal structure. They also sketched diagrams showing the inferred liqui-dus surface and the inferred 1600°C isothermal section for the system Fe-Cr-O. Koch et al3 studied oxide inclusions in Fe-Cr alloys and also observed the distorted spinel phase reported by Hilty et al. Richards and white4 as well as Woodhouse and White5 investigated spinel-sesquioxide equilibria in the system Fe-Cr-O in air in the temperature range of 1420" to 1650°C, and Muan and Somiya6 delineated approximate phase relations in the system in air from 1400" to 2050°C. The present study was carried out at a constant temperature of 1300° C and at oxygen pressures ranging from 0.21 atm (air) to 1.5 x 10-11 atm. The chosen temperature is high enough to permit equilibrium to be attained within a reasonable period of time within most composition areas of the system, and still low enough to permit use of experimental methods which give highly accurate and reliable results. These methods are described in detail in the following. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS 1) General Procedures. Two different experimental methods were used in the present investigation: quenching and thermogravimetry. In the quenching method, oxide samples were heated at chosen temperature and chosen oxygen pressure until equilibrium was attained among gas and condensed phases. The samples were then quenched rapidly to room temperature and the phases present determined by X-ray and microscopic examination. Total compositions were determined by chemical analysis after quenching. In the thermogravimetric method, pellets of oxide mixtures were suspended by a thin platinum wire from one beam of an analytical balance, and the weight changes were recorded as a function of oxygen pressure at constant temperature. The data thus obtained were used to locate oxygen isobars. The courses of the latter curves reflect changes in phase assemblages and serve to supplement the observations made by the quenching technique. 2) Materials. Analytical-grade Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 were used as starting materials. Each oxide was first heated separately in air at 1000°C for several hours. Mixtures of desired ratios of the two oxides were then prepared. Each mixture was finely ground and mixed, and heated at 1250" to 1300°C in air for 2 hr, ground and mixed again and heated at the same temperature for 5 to 24 hr, depending on the Cr2O3 content of the mixture. A homogeneous sesquioxide solid solution between the two end members resulted from this treatment. THERE is a disagreement among the various authors about the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2. Rostokerl and others2 stated that ZrCr2 had a C-14 (MgZn2) type of structure below 1000°C and a C-15 (MgCu2) type of structure at temperatures above 1000°C. Alisova3 and others4 reached the opposite conclusion and stated that the transformation temperature is close to the melting point of ZrCr2. A literature survey shows that various investigators3&apos;= who homogenized the specimens at a temperature higher than 1000°C have concluded that ZrCr2 had the C-15 structure at room temperature. Meanwhile, Jordan et al.4 reached similar conclusions without annealing the specimen. Other investigators1,2,6,7 who X-rayed the specimens in the as-cast condition without annealing reached different conclusions. The investigation reported herein was conducted with the aim of exploring the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2 by various heat treatment tests. The alloys for this examination were prepared from iodide-reduced zirconium crystal bars, 99.9 pct purity, and electrolytic chromium, 99.9 pct purity. They were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace with water-cooled copper crucible in a helium atmosphere. The melting loss of each alloy was less than 1.5 pct by weight. Chemical analysis of a randomly selected specimen indicated that there was a very close agreement between calculated and analyzed compositions. Before being heat-treated each specimen was encapsulated in a vycor or quartz tube inside which an argon atmosphere was maintained at a pressure of lower than 1 atm. In determining the crystal structure of each specimen with a Debye-Scherrer camera, the standard procedure8 for X-ray quality analysis (Hanawalt method) was followed. The different series of heat treatment tests in this investigation are tabulated in Tables I and 11. The tests in Series I, specimens from 1-1 to 1-9, which were similar to Rostoker&apos;s experiment1 indicated that the transformation temperature seemed to fall between 870° and 900°C and that the crystal structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperature seemed to be of the C-14 type. However, once the compound is transformed to C-15 type, it is impossible to reverse the transformation back to the C-14 type by first heating the specimen above 900°C and then annealing it slowly below 900°C as shown in Experiments II-1 to II-3. Thus, it appears that the specimen of ZrCr2 will transform from C-14 to C-15 structure when heated above 900°C but will not transform from C-15 to C-14 when annealed slowly passing 900° C even after the extremely slow cooling process such as indicated in the experiment of Specimen II-3. As a valid transformation temperature is a temperature at which the transformation is reversible, therefore the temperature 900°C (or other temperature close to 900°C) is not the transformation temperature for ZrCr2 and the C-14 structure is not the stable structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperatures. The C-14 structure is retained at room temperature because the transformation to C-15 structure is very sluggish and the fast cooling after melting does not allow enough time for the transformation to take place. Additional energy is required to alter the metastable condition of the C-14 structure. The sluggishness of this transformation was again demonstrated through another series of experiments. Four specimens with C-14 structure were taken. Then they were annealed at 900°C but each specimen was soaked for a different period of time, Table 11. X-ray diffraction patterns of this group indicated that the C-14 structure gradually disappeared as the soaking period was lengthened. The figures listed under the column "C-14 Structure, pct" were estimated from the intensity of the d = 2.330 line of the diffraction pattern corresponding to the structure. Notice that the intensity of this line became weaker for longer soaking periods. To determine the transformation temperature of ZrCr2, specimens with C-14 structure (as-cast condition) were annealed at 1300°, 1400°, 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C, respectively. A final specimen was first heat-treated to 1500°C in order to transform it to C-15 structure, then heat-treated at 1600°C again. From the X-ray analyses of this series of tests, Specimen Nos. III-1 to III-6, it is evident that a transition from C-15 structure at lower temperatures to the C-14 structure occurs at some temperature between 1550° and 1600°C.

G OLD MINING is enjoying a real revival in the West, and a considerable portion of the production is coming from small properties. The large mining companies of the world get most of the publicity, but in the last year the small gold property has often proved a more attractive field for the mining engineer looking for something to do. Old mines have been re- opened, prospects have been more closely examined, and many properties that were out of the running with the high commodity and labor costs of two or three years ago, have recently been making money for their operators. An interesting phase of this activity is the operation of so-called one-man mines. The west is dotted with these small properties, without the resources or reserves to warrant large-scale operation, but which return a living and often something over to one or two men who under- stand mining and simple methods of treatment.

The possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only sourcc of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or not these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps, a few hundred thousand dollars&apos; worth of chemically derived potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

I HIT the ceiling when I opened my November MINING ENGINEERING and after waiting a week to cool off I&apos; still find it necessary to express my resentment of the gross libel embodied in the editorial introduction to Norman Stines&apos; legitimate criticism of my paper on "Russia&apos;s Mineral Potential" (p. 949). The underlying thesis of my article, and a point that I tried to make even more clearly in my oral presentation at the St. Louis meeting last February, is that we should not over estimate the present and near-future mineral production of the USSR. The words that I resent in your boxed introduction are: "Opinions range from those presented by Paul Tyler ... to those of Norman C. Stines . . ." This is not merely an understatement that can be defended by admitting that the range goes much farther to the left, beyond me. It represents the appraisal that 90 pct of your members will carry away, namely that I am not only an incompetent observer-which may be true-but always that my bias is to applaud the efficiency of the beasts in the Kremlin-which is not true. Notwithstanding my efforts to clarify the record I now find myself branded as being at the opposite pole from &apos;Mr. Stines among the red-eyed worshipers of Communism or at least among the timid souls that shake in their boots in the belief that the Soviet system has created an invincible as well as an evil menace to the decent peoples of the world. My ideas are somewhere in the middle ground between Mr. Stines&apos; complaisance or contempt and the exaggerated fears of several other observers whose views have received wide acceptance. PAUL M. INTRODUCTION In order to make effective plans for the control of blasting effects, it is necessary to understand a few basic principles relating to the behavior of explosives. For the purposes of discussing this behavior, it is convenient to divide blasting effects into two zones. The first zone is the non-elastic zone in close proximity to the explosive charge where rupturing of the rock occurs. For this zone, our discussion will be oriented towards the factors which affect the rock breakage, and the means of controlling the limits of this breakage. The second zone is that zone more remote from the charge location where elastic vibrations are transmitted through the surrounding medium. In this zone, we are interested in the factors affecting vibration intensity, and the means of controlling the intensity so that no damage is done to structures, utilities, or excavated slopes. It has been easier to gather data in the elastic zone, because the stress levels are lower and time durations are longer. The instrumentation for obtaining data in this zone can be less rugged and less sophisticated. Consequently, more information of ad empirical nature has been gathered. In the non-elastic zone, there has been more dependence on theory, fewer measurements, and more questioning of the validity of the measurements. In spite of these questions, there has been an encouraging advancement in knowledge in recent years, both theoretical and empirical, of the effects that take place close to the source of an explosion. When discussing the problems encountered in rock excavation, we can simplify the terminology by referring to the physical phenomena encountered in the non-elastic zone as a problem in "over-break". The phenomena in the elastic zone could be called "vibration effects". Although there is some interdependence between the two, it is possible to control the rock breakage to neat surfaces and still have very high vibration levels. Similarly, it is possible to control the vibrations to moderate levels and still have a great deal of overbreak. THE ROCK BREAKAGE ZONE First, let us discuss the effects in that zone close to the blast source that we might call the non-elastic zone. It had a population of 118,110, according to the United States census of 1920, and of 151,968, according to a civic survey, January 1, 1925. The Salt Lake metropolitan district is estimated to have 180,079 inhabitants.The city's area is 51.8 square miles. Its altitude is 4,354 feet. It has 514 miles of streets, of which 91 miles are paved. The streets in the main portion of the city are 132 feet wide and the blocks are 660 feet long. It has 144 miles of street railway and 2,200 electric street lights. It has fifteen parks and playgrounds, forty public schools and six private schools. It has eighty-nine church edifices, of which forty-nine are devoted to denominations other than the Mormon Church.It is the capital of the state, the headquarters of the Mormon Church and the headquarters of most of the mining companies and many other business institutions of the state and adjacent territory.The State University, the State School of Mines and the Inter-Mountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are in the eastern part of the city. Fort Douglas is east of the University the country clubs are in the southeastern portion of the city. The State Fair Grounds are in the northwestern portion.The city is the center of a trade area about 700 miles in diameter and is in almost the exact center of a circle that embraces the principal western mining areas. DuriNg April, Max, and June, 1910, I was in charge of an examination of the greater part of the Moa iron-ore area in Oriente Province, Cuba, on the north coast, near the east end of the island. My instructions, on arrival at the properties, were to check former estimates of tonnages and grades, and to re-examine the ore comprised in claims covering 44,727 acres. This work included the running of lines dividing the properties into co-ordinate planes, the boring of many thousand feet of holes spaced at the intersections of these co-ordinates, the taking of samples of the ore penetrated, the analysis of these samples for their various constituent minerals, and the determination of the results as to tonnages, depths, and grades, both for individual properties and for the entire group. Each section of every one of the thousand holes drilled was to be compensated for depth and grade with every other, a series of simple arithmetical calculations of no slight magnitude, the mere mechanical labor of which consumed much time, but finally resulted in giving a complete average of all the essential facts for the entire area of 18,000 hectares, Had it not been for the more than willing, active, and able co-operation of the officers of the Spanish-American Iron Co., from Charles F. Rand, President, and Jennings S. Cox, General .Manager, down to the most humble water-carrier, the work would have consumed far more time than it did. The lands thus systematically explored by me were comprised in the following denouncements: Punta Gorda, Yaminiguey, Baracoa secunda, Sagua, Moa, Yajrumaje, Lirio, and Cabanas, all of which were massed as the Moa group, so called, and cover an area of 13,832 hectares, or 34,179 acres. The International Salt Company has long been interested in finding an efficient process for the removal of impurities from rock salt, and particularly from the rock salt produced at the Detroit mine. Methods which have been used previously at the Detroit mine included both hand sorting and differential crushing in a Bradford breaker with rejection of the oversize. Neither of these methods was adequately effective. The development of a new process for removal of impurities from rock salt has been described in the preceding article." Basically, the process consists of exposure of crude rock salt to radiant heating which selectively heats the impure particles. Subsequently the heated particles are removed by adhesion to a heat sensitive-coating on a conveyor belt. This method was found to be effective in improving both the quality and appearance of rock salt by the rejection of the dark, impure particles.
