I. Introduction. This cavern was discovered Oct. 32,1904, by Mr. Charles 8. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3,1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanging map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. 11. Location. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier station, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier station, which is also a hotel of the railway company. Figs. 3, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. "The Washoe Smelter is situated about two miles east of the City of Anaconda. The smelter site includes about 240 acres and peculiarly adapts itself in topography to the efficient handling of material. By reason of its being on a hill side it is possible to make the level of delivery of the product of one building the level of the charge floor of the next succeeding one.THE ORES: The ore treated comes principally from the Butte district and is hauled by the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific railway, a distance of twenty-eight miles, in trains of fifty 50-ton bottom-dump cars to the railroad yards at East Anaconda. At this point these trains are• split up according to their destination,—that is, as to whether they go to the concentrator and sampling mill ore bins, or to the storage bins. In each case they are made up into trains of eight or sixteen cars, according to the size of engine to be used, and are carefully weighed before delivery to their respective bills.Some idea of the magnitude of the works may be obtained from the following figures:Amount of ore that can be treated in 24 hours…12,000 tonsLime rock from adjacent quarries…2,300 tonsCoke used…500 tonsCoal for reverberatory use…500 tonsCoal for power use…50 tonsWater, per minute, 35,000 gallons.Men employed in and around Anaconda, 3,000. The following financial report of the Treasurer of the United Engineering Society is published for the information of members NEW YORK, February 15, 190S. To the Board of' Trustees, United Engineering Society I beg to submit herewith the report of the Treasurer as of December 31, 1907. Your attention is called to the fact that the resources and liabilities, receipts and disbursements statements cover all the financial transactions of the United Engineering Society from its organization up to December 31, 1907. The income and expenses of operating the building during the whole operating period from December 1 to December 31, 1907, somewhat in excess of twelve months, are given. Included in the expenses, amounting in all to $52,647.11, will be found an item entitled "Building Equipment (construction account)." The expenditures under this item were not made for the operating expenses of the building, they represent a construction account, properly speaking, covering expenditures for furnishings and equipment of the building. The Founders' Agreement specifically provides for this class of expenditure under the provision that the Founder Societies shall each be liable for a charge not to exceed $200,000 of principal, which shall include the land and building completed and ready for occupancy, together with the " furnishings, equipment and personal property therein." Certain details of equipment are yet to be supplied, and it. is proposed in the near future to call upon the Founder Societies for an assessment on their respective land and building funds to cover this item of building equipment. Such action would enable the item of $10,039.85 to be transferred to the income account and reduce correspondingly the assessment

THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. To avoid too great prolixity, I adopted at the outset the following general principles: 1. To include the most important technical words and phrases used by American miners and metallurgists, or occurring in English books and periodicals.

EACH year we gather in this auditorium to honor the memory of a. distinguished American metallurgist and educator. I cannot bring to you reminiscences of Prof. Henry Marion Howe as other lecturers have done. It was not my good fortune to enjoy the-privilege of studying and working under his direction. As I have reflected on the published works of Professor Howe, it has seemed to me that his mind was trained on the nature of metals and on the mechanism which produced known but unexplained effects. He was interested in controlling and regulating the causes so as to produce specific effects, useful in serving mankind. I recall an afternoon in May, 1925, when, at the invitation of Mrs. Howe, I visited his former home, Green Peace at Bedford Hills, N. Y. The purpose of my visit was to receive at the hands of the widow an engraving of Professor Howe, a reproduction of a painting from life. Mrs. Howe showed me his study. The walls of this large attractive room, brilliantly illuminated by the spring sunshine, were literally covered with the scrolls of honors and of decorations which had been conferred on Professor Howe by governments, academies, universities, societies and institutions the world over. As we walked about the room, she pointed out the significance of each honor and recited a few details of each occasion. I sensed the pride with which Mrs. Howe, then in the late autumn of her life, told me of her husbands' achievements, of his struggles, of his disappointments and of his successes. There was a surprisingly familiar note in the recital to which I was listening. I 'have found the same theme running as a disconnected thread through the written accounts of the lives of most men of science. We then went to the drawing room to chat for a few minutes before I said my farewells. As we seated ourselves, Mrs. Howe turned to me and asked: "Mr. Lucas, what of this great microscope of yours? Cannot it be applied to the study of disease? What a great blessing it would be if it could be directed to relieve the suffering of mankind."

$1. Introduction.—Any given piece of metal is made up of a very great number of grains, usually microscopic, each of which is a perfect crystal save only in outward form, with cleavage planes of low cohesion, geometrically arranged quite as in fie familiar non-metallic crystals. The plastic deformation of such a mass occurs chiefly through the slipping of the crystalline blocks of which each grain is composed along these cleavage planes, causing steps called slip bands to form on a previously polished surface. In this slip, the metal immediately adjoining each of the cleavage planes along which the slip takes place is thought to pass extremely rapidly through a very mobile state into the amorphous state, in which it is harder than the remaining still crystalline metal between the amorphous layers thus formed along the slip planes. Whether the slip planes below the surface in ferrite can be detected by cutting, polishing, and etching sections is in dispute; but if this detection is possible at all, it is usually made impossible by heating the metal even gently. In short, the change along the slip planes does not persist through heating, and it is thought not to persist through time even at the room temperature, nearly all the amorphous metal recrystallizing. The network in Fig. 22 and the parallel N.-70-E. lines in Fig. 21 are slip bands in copper. When plastically deformed metal is heated, certain parts of certain grains may twin, that is, their component crystalline units may rotate into a position, or more exactly into an orientation, symmetrical with the initial orientation and hence with that of the remainder of that grain. As seen in a microsection of a metal the twinned areas usually have parallel sides. The existence of twinning is recognized in metallic sections either by the presence of such parallel-sided areas differing in brightness from the adjoining metal, especially when seen under oblique light after etching, or more surely by the zigzagging of the slip bands which form when twinned metal is itself deformed again. Hence the usual procedure in developing twins is to deform plastically so as to cause the twinning tendency; to heat so as to allow the tendency to assert

In the paper on the development of the flotation process at Broken Hill (Australia) prepared by the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and published in its Proceedings for 1930 (N. S. 80), it is stated that the concentration of ores by flotation has been established on a commercial basis in Australia since 1904 and that differential flotation was practised at Broken Hill in 1912. Since then, progress in flotation practice throughout the world has been rapid, and during recent years the knowledge of the reactions between comparatively modern so-called chemical promoters or collecting agents and the mineral surfaces has been broadened by the published accounts of many investigators, particularly those working in American universities. Because of the benefits the Australian mining industry has derived from the flotation process, it was felt that the industry should take some part in the efforts that are being made to extend the knowledge of the principles on which the flotation process is based. Accordingly, early in 1930, three Broken Hill mining companies—the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, and the Zinc Corporation—together with the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Co., established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation. Subsequently, the Burma Corporation, Ltd., expressed a desire to cooperate. The two authors are directly employed and controlled by these six organizations, and the cost of the investigation is divided equally among them. The research has been carried out under the general direction and in close cooperation with Harry Hey, chief metallurgist for the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the authors desire to place on record their indebtedness to him for his ever willing help and constructive criticism. After an extensive search of the literature, it was decided to determine in a preliminary investigation whether the effect of chemical collectors could be evaluated quantitatively by the "contact-angle" method. THE orebody described below has been rediscovered and developed within the last 3 years. It has, however, been known and worked by the Chinese for hundreds of years. When assay values and size are considered, it contains what is probably one of the largest single bodies of zinc and lead sulphides yet found. The tonnages developed at other places, as at Broken Hill, are much greater but the average zinc and lead sulphide contents are considerably lower than at Bawdwin. Bawdwin is situated in the semi-independent State of Tawng Peng, one of the numerous units which make up the Northern Shan States. These States are under British rule and are generally considered as a portion of Burma. They are governed as a separate administrative unit, however, under the Lieutenant Governor of Burma. Each State is under its own chief, or Sawbwa, who has considerable power over his own subjects. Bawdwin is approximately in latitude N 23°6', longitude E 97°20', about 50 miles south of the nearest point on the Chinese border and 450 miles north of Rangoon (Fig. 1). The period at which mining was first begun at Bawdwin is unknown. The most reliable records have been obtained by deciphering local Chinese inscriptions and from these it is concluded that the work dates back to at least the beginning of the 15th century. The first undoubted reference to the mines by a European is by Symes in 1795. Crawford in 1827 estimated the output of silver from the mines at $600,000 annually. At about the middle of the 19th century the rebellion of the Chinese Mohammedans in the neighboring Chinese province of Yunnan so weakened the power of the Chinese that the incursions of hostile tribes (Kachins) made work extremely dangerous. The mines were finally abandoned by the Chinese about 1868. The closing down of the mines was probably not entirely due to outside causes but may have been influenced somewhat by the increasing difficulty of handling the water, as the workings gradually descended below the water level of the district. The temperature of a material may be ascertained by measurement of the intensity of the radiant energy it emits. This measurement may refer to the radiation of all wave lengths emitted by the material, or, if the material is glowing, the measurement may refer to the visible light emitted, or to the radiation in n very restricted portion of the visible spectrum. In general, the intensity of radiation depends not alone upon the temperature of the source, but, also upon its nature. Thus, glowing carbon appears to the eye about three times as bright as glowing platinum, at the same temperature. This is technically expressed by saying that the emissive power or emissivity of carbon is about three times that of platinum. A material having the highest theoretically possible emissivity is known as a "black body;" it is customary to assign a numerical value of 1 to the emissivity of a black body. A black body is experimentally realized by uniformly heating a hollow enclosure and observing the radiation coming from a small opening in the wall. The intensity of radiation emitted from this opening depends only on the temperature of the walls, and not on the material of which they are constructed. If E is the emissivity of any non-transparent material and R is its reflection coefficient, it can be shown that E + R, = 1. If a material having an emissivity of, say, 0.40, and hence a reflection coefficient of 0.60, is placed inside a black body it becomes indistinguishable from its Surroundings, because the total intensity of radiation leaving the material is the same as that emitted by the black body. While the material actually emits only 40 per cent of the intensity of a black body at the same temperature, 60 per cent. of the radiation falling upon it from the walls of the enclosure is reflected. However, if the material is removed from the black body and placed in the open air, the reflected intensity is no longer present and the object appears but 40 per cent. as bright as a black body at the same temperature.

The property of the Roan Antelope Copper Mines, Ltd., is situated at Luanshya, north central part of Northern Rhodesia, and is connected with the main line of the Rhodesia Railways, Ltd., by a 24-mile branch line from N'dola. Most of the material and supplies that are not available in Africa are shipped into the country via Beira, on the East Coast of Africa, a distance of 1473 miles from Luanshya and the nearest ocean port. The output of copper is shipped by rail to Beira and thence by boat to the market. Passenger travel is mostly via Cape Town, a distance of 2162 miles from Luanshya. Excellent passenger trains operate on regular schedules between Cape Town and Northern Rhodesia. Luanshya is 13" south of the equator at an elevation of 4000 ft. above sea level, and has a mild healthful climate. During the rainy season, from October to March, the rainfall averages 53 in. The area is profusely covered with vegetation. An ample supply of water for industrial and domestic purposes is available throughout the year. The more important supplies for smelting purposcs, such as wood, coal, limestone, silica, quartzite, and clay for "dolly" mud, are conveniently available. Excellent grades of coal, coke and firebrick are obtained from the Wankie Colliery Co., Ltd., Southern Rhodesia. The Wankie colliery has just completed the erection of equipment for the manufacture of silica brick. An ample supply of quartzite of good grade is available for this purpose. Silica brick is also obtained from the Belgian Congo and from India. Limestone is quarried from a large deposit a few miles from Bwana Mkubwa, which is 30 miles by rail from the smelter. An abundant supply of clay for " dolly " mud and for lining launders is available within a short distance of the smelter. Metallurgy Copper is contained in the ore as chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite. Chalcocite predominates in the eastern end of the orebody almost to the exclusion of other copper minerals. The amount of chalcocite decreases with a corresponding increase of chalcopyrite and bornite toward the western extension, where the latter predominate.

The old Telegraph mine lies on both sides of Bear gulch, a short branch of Upper Bingham canon, and nearly in the center of the group of mines called the Bingham Mines, about twenty-seven miles southwest of Salt Lake City. It is considered, by local miners as the most important mine of the district. The geological formation consists of Weber quartzites, with subordinate conformable limestones and shales, alternating with porphyritic rocks. These widen towards and connect with the massive backbone of the Oquirrh mountains, while the quartzite develops itself on the slope broken through by Bingham canon. The porphyry not only runs between the strata, but also cuts across them, isolating large portions near the mountain mass, and again on a smaller scale it penetrates some joints in the quartzite. It is a crystalline felspathic rock, containing variable proportions of quartz, mica, hornblende, chlorite, and iron pyrites as accessories. In places, it takes a less distinct or almost uniform fine-grained structure. It has a gray or greenish, and, when much altered, also a reddish or even white color. The quartzite is a fine-grained or almost compact grayish-white or bluish or reddish quartz-rock, containing in places fine scales of mica and grains of iron pyrites as accessories. The raised, folded, or broken masses show well-defined bedding-joints, and their general dip is 35 to 50 degrees towards north or northwest. In the porphyry occur metalliferous veins with a prevailing N.E.S.W. strike. These are in general narrow veins; their principal contents are not dissimilar from those of the other deposits; but there is considerably less oxidation near the surface and the ore is mostly richer in silver and gold. In the quartzite the ore-deposits generally occur on the joints of bedding. The more important deposits occur either in clearlydefined contact-veins or, more often, in somewhat vaguely-defined mineralized zones, that could be called contact-zones. These comprise several masses of more or less altered or decomposed rocks and the newly-distributed products of their mechanical and chemical decomposition, such as breccia and clay in seams or in more irregular bodies..

[Secretary's Note.—The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transaclions. In a number of instances, death has nullified this ambition, and the intended "monumental " contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experieuce thus hopelessly lost to the world.—R. H.] The official publications of the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook's report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61" E., on the Losva river, a part of the vast system of the Ob river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full offish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. Winter lasts from early November to late April, the temperature ranging from -60" F. to a summer maximum of 90° F. With so tremendous a subject, an attempted review of the coal situation of the world in a short talk must necessarily be of a sketchy character. It is hardly necessary to tell a body of engineers that had it not been for nature's gift of coal the material side of modern civilization would never have reached its present status. On the other side, it is regrettable that it was a byproduct of coal, T. N. T., which made possible Germany's initial success in this war, because that country had an enormous development of manufacturing plants that could be immediately utilized to make this destructive agent: One sometimes hears the casual remark that when the coal of the world is exhausted we shall use electricity; but, of course, electricity is ordinarily only a means of transforming and transmitting energy derived from fuel or water power, and chiefly from coal. It is true, we have much undeveloped water power, but it is more or less remote from 'the, centers of industry; and when all shall have been developed it will not begin to supply the power requirements of the world. It is, however, reasonable to expect that before the world's supply of coal shall be exhausted, methods will have been discovered of harnessing other forces of nature, such as the tides, or the energy emanating from the sun. Petroleum and natural gas naturally come to mind, but the days of both, as fuel, appear to be numbered, although the products of petroleum, if economically used, doubtless will be available for internal-combustion engines, automobiles, trucks, and boats for a long time, provided the reckless use of crude petroleum as an ordinary fuel is stopped. The products of petroleum are too valuable to mankind for such waste to be permitted. The civilization of the world, therefore, appears to rest, and, so far as can be seen, will indefinitely continue to rest, upon coal. In giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N 65° 35' and long. W. 168o. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the Westernmost point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions arc of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption " The Land's End of Two Worlds." "The Arctic Ocean encircles with a belt of eternal ice, the desert confines of Siberia and North America—the uttermost limits of the Old and New World, separated by the narrow channel known as Bering's Straits. " To the north, this desert is bounded by a ragged const, bristling with huge black rocks. At the base of this Titanic mass lies enchained the petrified ocean (Bering sea) whose spell-bound waves appear fixed as vast ranges of ice mountains, their blue peaks fading away in the far-off frost-smoke, or snow-vapor. " Between the twin peak* of East Cape, the termination of Siberia, the sullen sea is Been to drive tall icebergs across a stream of dead green. There lies Bering's Strait. Opposite, and towering over the channel, rise the granite masses of Cape Prince of Wales, the headland of North America. "These lonely latitudes do not belong to the habitable world."

THE 144th* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, 1935. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 216 papers were presented (approximately the same number of sessions and papers as at the previous annual meeting), two sessions of the Board of Directors, three meetings of Section delegates, two formal lectures and two addresses, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, six group dinners and eight group luncheons, ten committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoker-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary. Attendance was generally greater than for the two preceding meetings; the statistics follow (figures are in the order 1935-1934-1933); total registration, 1609-1534-1475; dinner dance, 577-543-426; dinner-smoker, 490-425-394; informal dance, 279-295-250; women's registration, 179-160-133; general luncheons, 1132-1034-734. The Coal Division held two general sessions on Monday and a symposium on coal-mine ventilation on Tuesday morning. The Committee on Bituminous Planning, Edward Steidle, chairman, presented a report at the Monday morning session. C. B. Huntress, President of Appalachian Coals, Inc., was the principal speaker at the luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided. Mr. Huntress was preceded by Howard N. Eavenson, President of the Institute, who spoke briefly. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met Wednesday afternoon. A feature of the meeting concerning three Divisions-Iron and Steel, Institute of Metals, Petroleum-was the symposium on Use of Metals in the Petroleum Industry, Thursday morning and afternoon. Five of the papers presented at this symposium have been published in METALS TECHNOLOGY'. Another feature, of general interest, was the Tuesday morning session in the Auditorium, devoted to Federal Government and Mineral Industries. Dr. C. K. (communication to the Secretary): Le Chatelier's pyrometer is certainly a most convenient and accurate instrument for the laboratory, and one that may be used under some conditions in the mill. I have used it for several years and with great satisfaction. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen and unlike Herr Blass, I have always found that its indications remain constant over long periods. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen, also, I find it possible, in a quiet place, to read with extreme accuracy ; and, by the use of a telescope, I can read temperatures to within a degree, for some delicate determinations which I have in hand. Variations in the temperature of the room affect the readings of the instrument far less than one would expect. When the current is cut off, the mirror does not always return exactly to the same place; in other words, the zero shifts appreciably, and must be determined often, indeed every few hours if accuracy be desired. In some cases I have had it determined within a very few minutes of every important reading. To this end a switch should he introduced, so that the circuit may be broken readily. With this arrangement we can determine accurately the position of the zero within a very few seconds of the time of taking any especially important reading. The chief causes of the variation of the zero which I have noticed are as follows: a. The suspension may not be tight enough, so that the momentum of the galvanometer frame as it swings makes its supporting wires slip in their bearings. b. Changes in the position of neighboring iron objects may deflect the mirror. c. Changes in the temperature of the room may, perhaps, change the torsion of the suspension wires, and so shift the mirror. d. Dust may attach itself to the galvanometer frame, and by friction against the surrounding fixed parts of the galvanometer, may

During the drilling of wells, fractures which are created or widened by drilling fluid pressure are suspected of being a frequent cause of lost circulation. A study of the variables which are believed by the authors to he related to fracturing led to the premise that the presence of an effective lost circulation material in a drilling mud stream would serve to plug small fractures at the moment they are encountered or created and thereby a a possible cause of lost Circula. tion by preventing fluid pressure from widening and extending the fractures. A large number of lost circulation materials were classified and tested in simulated fractures and in shallow wells. Granular type materials with a gradation of particle sizes were found to be the most effective for plugging. Within the limits of pumpahility, the concentration in mud of each lost circulation material tested was found to be a controlling factor in determining the maximum size fracture which could be sealed. A new type centrifugal sorter was given preliminary tests and found to be capable of concentrating cuttings for rejection and reclaiming lost circulation materials. INTRODUCTION The control and prevention of lost circulation of drilling fluids is a problem frequently encountered during the drilling of oil and gas wells. Lost circulation or lost returns may be defined as the loss to formation voids of the drilling fluids or cement slurries used in the process of rotary drilling and well completion. The loss may vary from n gradual lowering of mud level in the pits to a complete loss of returns. Not to be confused with lost circulation is the continuous reduction in mud volume caused by the loss of the fluid phase of muds as filtrate and the solid phase as filter cake during the continuous filt~ation process which occurs on permeable formation surfaces. The loss of drilling fluids and their costly constituents is only one of the detrimental effects experienced when circulation is lost. The loss of drilling time, plugging of potentially productive formations, stuck drill pipe, blow-outs, excessive inflow of water, and excessive caving of formatioils are other effects which contribute to make the control and prevention

Surveying what was done in 1929 in meeting problems of oil-field equipment corrosion, one is struck by the fact that fewer meetings were held for discussion of these problems and fewer papers written than in any year since the subject engaged the attention of petroleum engineers. This does not mean that progress has not been made, for a great deal actually has been accomplished. Recommendations that accompanied field reports have been put into actual trial and some results obtained are gratifying. The type of papers prepared also has undergone a change, for they now deal with things accomplished rather than recite damages and suggest possible remedies. Some of the most notable work pointing the way for future solution of many pipe line problems is that done for the U. S. Bureau of Standards by Dr. K. H. Logan and Dr. Gordon N. Scott, dealing with tests of pipe coatings and reports on soil conditions. Many facts of great importance have been isolated and defined by these two men, not only indicating what may be done in some instances to retard corrosion, but showing that things formerly considered of importance have little bearing apparently upon the practical results. All-aluminum Storage Tanks In April, 1928, an all-aluminum 500-bbl. field storage tank was put into actual field use in Crane County, Texas, together with another tank of the same capacity but made with steel bottom and lower section of side sheets and aluminum upper ring of side sheets and deck. In April, 1929, after a little over one year's use these tanks were opened and examined by a group of engineers and chemists. The results of the test were enlightening. Other tanks made entirely of steel and used in the same battery with the two test tanks had some of their side and bottom sheets destroyed by corrosion in six to nine months, but the all-aluminum tank was in actual use for 18 months before holes were found corroded through the bottom, when the tank was examined for a second time in September, 1929.
