Although the use of gaseous fuel in blast-furnaces has been often proposed, I hope the description of a very simple, yet practical and valuable, application of natural gas to the smelting of lead-ores and residues, at the works of the Pennsylvania Lead Company, will prove interesting. In May, 1886, directly after replacing the use of bituminous coal at the above works by that of natural gas, half-inch pipes from a branch gas-main were inserted directly into the tuyeres of a lead blast-furnace, and through these pipes gas was delivered into the furnace, with the air-blast at a pressure a little more than double that in the tuyere-pipes. At the same time the blast-pressure at the tuyeres was increased by an amount estimated to give a sufficient air-delivery when mixed with the gas-supply. The amount of gas delivered to the furnace is easily regulated by stop-cocks at each tuyere, and is under the immediate control of the furnace manager. Upon the introduction of gas into the tuyeres of the furnace the coke charged at the mouth was reduced 30 per cent., this being the amount of coke which I thought could be advantageously replaced by gas. This first estimate has proved to be very close to the working results, though probably the average gas-consumption corresponds to a little less than 30 per cent. of the former coke used. The proportion that we use varies, with the nature of the furnaceburden, between 20 and 40 per cent. of the total fuel. We have used 60 per cent. of gas; but there is difficulty in keeping a cool furnace-mouth when the proportion is so high. With some residues, notably metallic drosses containing some zinc, we have found it best not to use over 20 per cent. gaseous fuel. The percentage used with ore-charges has generally been higher than that used in smelting the higher-lead charges of residues from our refining works. It results from this use of natural gas that the temperature of the hearth is under almost immediate control, and, for this reason chiefly, a cleaner and more uniform slag can be run, and the furnaceworking can be made more nearly independent of the effects of atmospheric conditions or the variable moisture in the furnace-burden.

To forecast the future of coal intelligently, one must first consider the market outlook. Coal can be used for many purposes, but currently about 25% of it goes into metallurgical coke, while 75% serves as fuel. Coal for metallurgical coke should show a modest growth for at least the next decade, primarily because of increased exports, but the important factor in the coal outlook is energy. Today, this country faces a serious shortage of energy, and its requirements are growing at an almost unbelievable rate. Last year the United States consumed 68 quadrillion Btu, or double the energy it consumed in 1950, and, if projections are correct, this figure will grow to 150 quadrillion Btu by 1990. Thus, in one working lifetime, the nation's energy consumption is expected to increase by roughly five times. The future of coal hinges on its degree of participation in meeting this energy need. The Federal Power Commission predicts that coal consumed by electric utilities will increase about 4-576 per yr, reaching 472 million tons by 1980 and 615 million tons by 1990. If this projection proves correct, 1980 consumption will be double that of last year and, even more startling, the utility industry alone will use more coal in 1990 than the entire coal industry produced in 1970. This is a tremendous increase, but in view of the projected energy growth, it is difficult to see how this country's needs can be satisfied with- out a coal contribution of this magnitude. Unless some new source such as solar energy is discovered, it must be assumed that the projected energy will come principally from the present-day sources-oil, gas, nuclear materials and coal.

Hazardous methane gas in coal mining is receiving increased attention due to the increased US demand for coal which has resulted in the exploitation of deeper seams and the utilization of more productive equipment. Problems posed by methane emission has the Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Co. (Conoco) accelerating efforts that began in the early 1950's with Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol).1 The program's focus is on finding new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas.

ON p. 499 of the December issue Of MINING AND METAL-LURGY plans were announced for a memorial to en-gineers who died in overseas service during the World War and a gift to the University of Louvain on behalf of the engineers of America. In this connection it is proposed to erect a memorial tablet giving the names. of engineers who died in the foreign service. Members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives, so far as they are known, are listed below. It will be much appreciated if notice be given of any omissions and also if the name of some surviving relative be supplied in each case. JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

His father Geology and his mother Physics separated shortly after his birth, which occurred during the World War amid a smoke screen of mathematics. He was kicked around a great deal. His parents could not agree on a name, and they finally christened him "Geophysics," for short. His relatives insisted that the name should be "Geophysical Prospecting," "Geophysical Exploration" or "Exploratory Geophysics"; though the youngster has grown up by now, this battle is still going on. His father did not think the child would amount to much until he began to show some unexpected talents, which were acquired, no doubt, from his mother Physics. His progress caused his father no little worry, and he began to wonder whether his offspring would help him in his business when he grew up or would set up shop in competition with the old man. His aunt Petroleum watched his growth with benevolent interest; his uncle Mining remained rather skeptical and cousin Civil Engineering not only assumed the attitude of the man from Missouri but was not much convinced even after he had been shown. Making a long story short, the kid decided that he had to stand on his own feet and get along as best he could. Having come from a good family he possessed some outstanding characteristics such as resourcefulness and a reasonable amount of business ability. He therefore decided that it would be to his advantage to follow in his father's and mother's footsteps as much as possible, and develop the good qualities of both. As a result, the youngster did fairly well for himself, and his relatives decided that it might be to their advantage to be on better terms with him. Father Geology had come to the conclusion that the boy could be very helpful to him and now wanted him to live in his house. His mother, who had brought him through the teething and measles stages, felt quite capable of bringing up the boy without the help of his father; and, as the fairer sex will do, would confide to a neighbor every now and then that his

It is often necessary to calculate the size of a hoisting-plant required to raise a given quantity of material, either as a preliminary to the detail design of the machinery, or to decide whether machinery on hand or offered by a manufacturer is adapted to the work to be done. The first element of the problem to be determined is the load to be raised. In a mine that is already developed, this is limited by the size of car that can be hoisted out of the mine and that will pass through the underground gangways. If these place no limits on the design, the size of the load will depend on the output desired per day, and on the number of hoists that call be made per day. The latter are fixed by the time required per hoist and the number of hours available for hoisting, after deducting from the working-day the time required for raising and lowering men, sending down supplies, and for the many small delays in handling cars. It must also be decided whether the hoisting is to be done in one shift or in all of them.

Reactors of today and tomorrow require a high uniformity of their fuel elements despite the wide variety of uranium raw materials from the far corners of the earth. To meet these quality standards metallurgists have been working to design production methods capable of yielding reactor feed materials whose maximum impurities are specified in parts per million, whose physical limits are expressed in thousands of an inch, and whose density variations are less than 1 pct. Such requirements are necessary to maintain normal neutron flow in the atomic reactor and to insure that the isotopic content of the feed material is maintained within narrow limits. Uranium ores and concentrates are produced in many sections of the world, including the Belgian Congo, South Africa, Australia, Canada, and the Colorado Plateau of the U. S. Ores from many of the larger deposits are relatively low grade, and these are concentrated near the mine site before shipment to refining centers, but high grade ores may be shipped directly to refineries.

On July 25, the first copper ore From American Smelting & Refining Co.'s Mission open pit nine was sent into the new 15,000-tpd concentrator : three clays later, the first rail cars containing the Mission concentrate were sent north to the smelter at Hayden, Ariz. Thus two y,ears after stripping was started, Asarco's new mine, located south of Tucson. went on stream several months ahead of schedule. The plant, designed and constructed by Western Knapp Engineering Co., is expected to be operating at full capacity about September 1. with present plans calling for the copper concentrate from Mission to be shipped to Asarco's smelters at Hayden and El Paso.

In light of the present energy crisis, coal appears now as the only reliable source of energy. The production of coal is expected to regain a rising trend after the latest slump. Aside from the competitive price with natural gas and oil, the other retarder of coal production is its environmental pollution effect. Gasification of coal has been advanced as the partial solution to the energy-ecology crisis. All the Advantages In situ gasification of coal may be considered a further step in this direction. It carries all the advantages of normal coal gasification as a stable source of energy; it is clean to handle and nonpolluting of the environment. It partially and sometimes fully does away with mining, makes uneconomical low grade coal and lignites economical and places some formerly unworkable seams within the scope of modern technology. The seams posing problems for mining due to tectonic disturbances may be converted into gas in situ. Low grade coals, such as lignites, which otherwise would be left in nature as uneconomic wealth, may be exploited by underground or in situ gasification. Thus, in situ gasification is likely to increase the exploitable reserves of coal and may reduce the cost of production. An additional merit of this method is that coal substance never reaches the surface and there is no problem of cinder disposal.

THE object of this paper is to, describe the several necessary characteristics of the zinc-retorting charge and to show how by certain improved methods; the large excess of coal, over that theoretically required, can be reduced, thereby effecting an increase in the smelting capacity of a retort plant as well as other economies. In the Southwestern zinc works a charge of roasted zinc ore with a side mixture of carbonates and silicates, analyzing on the average 50 per cent. Zn, is mixed with 55 or more per cent. of its weight of a mixture of coal and coke analyzing 60 to 70 per cent. fixed carbon. . The ore is of varying fineness and the coal and coke are usually crushed in a semi-moist condition through a 3/8 -in. screen. With ores of a slaggy nature, this coal proportion is increased, sometimes to as much as 100 per cent. of, the weight of the ore. With carbonate ores, or where anthracite screenings with higher carbon content are cheap enough, the percentage of reducing agent is cut to 45 per cent. or even somewhat lower. The average charge per retort for a monthly run of a plant on ore, as distinguished from retorts on blue-powder, ladle-skimmings and other between-products, runs from 60 to 66 lb., with a mean of 63 lb. for the Southwest with standard retorts of 8 ½ -in. inside diameter and 50 in. long inside, using roasted sulphide ores. Conditions will change these figures, but 40 lb. of ore per cubic foot of retort space is, I believe, an average in the better-operated plants. Since the rise in. the price of spelter, the tendency has been to overcharge. To remove the slag that is formed when retorts are overcharged, extra men are put on to "gum-chisel" the retorts to prevent "set" furnaces and "butchered, retorts." Taking the above conditions as premises, we find that from four to six times the amount of coal necessary for the reduction is used, as is evidenced by the fact that the residues analyze as high as 35 per cent, fixed carbon. There are good reasons why this excess of fixed carbon must be used and perhaps these can be best explained by a description of the metallurgical requisites of a zinc charge. Recent research work has shown that coal can be produced, at reasonable cost, from almost all coal-mining districts containing not more than 3 to 8 per cent. of ash. From coal so produced, an abundant supply of coke, suitable for blast-furnace operation, can be made containing from 12 down to 6 per cent. or less of ash. These statements apply broadly to the Appalachian coal belt, including most of the mining districts in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The exceptions will generally be found among those coals carrying a prohibitive percentage of sulfur. Any gravimetric heavy fluid method of separation will effect a reduction in the percentage of sulfur, but this reduction may not be sufficient to produce, from coal unfit for metallurgic use, a product that can be so used. When a large part of the sulfur is in the form known as "organic sulfur, "or is present as very finely disseminated and homogeneously distributed pyrite, possibly it cannot be eliminated from the low-ash coal produced. When the sulfur exists as pyrite in distinct layers, bands, or nodules, or when it is finely disseminated but is irregularly distributed, often a low-ash coal low enough in sulfur to make good metallurgic coke can be produced from relatively impure coals. It has generally been assumed that the quality of coke on which blast furnaces must be operated depends on the geographic location of the furnace, and that the grade of coke on which a blast furnace must operate is that produced from the best coal obtainable by careful mining; or if the coal is prepared by washing, hand picking, or other means by which the foreign impurities are removed, that the grade of coke on which the furnace must operate depends on what has been termed the "inherent ash" of the particular coal. The term "inherent ash " is generally understood to mean the percentage of ash present after all removable (free) impurities, slate, fireclay, high-ash bony coal, and pyrite have been removed, and is usually applied to the percentage of ash present in run-of-mine coal from any mine after these impurities have been removed. Perfect washing, or perfect preparation, is understood to be attained when the percentage of ash in the washed coal is reduced to the percentage of inherent ash; that is, of ash that cannot be removed by the washing processes in common use. THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, 'and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.

I1944 the cry was for higher production more tons, more metal. New plants were built, capacity of old plants was increased and millmen all over the country were treating tonnages far above normal, sacrificing recoveries to vet that extra metal from extra tons. The list of "critical minerals," at first long, has been scratched until there remains, not a list, but only an item or two. Stocks of all metals and minerals, with possibly one or two exceptions, are now entirely adequate and numerous plants have curtailed or suspended operation.

Stibiotantalite is a relatively rare mineral not commonly found in the major tin districts of the world, and its separation characteristics have not been documented adequately in the literature. The investigation described here has been carried out on a sample taken from a commercial tin concentrate containing a significant amount of stibiotantalite which would have to be substantially removed before the tin concentrate was smelted. The sample originated from Greenbushes, Western Australia. A mineralogical analysis was performed on the sample with the aid of the Frantz Isodynamic separator 1 and the results presented in Table 1. A screen analysis was also performed, and the results presented in Table 2. The minerals were found to be substantially liberated.

The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface detailed and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies - in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing at this time.

ONE of the most unusual oil field engineering accomplishments of the past two years is the development and rapid advance in the directed drilling of wells. Directed drilling as referred to herein is the controlled steering of the drill stem in the required direction to a given location in the oil sand. The deliberate drifting of holes is an act so far removed from what has been considered good drilling practice that all of the old questions of correlation, drillability and production difficulties are revived. Only a few years ago, during the boom days of Seminole and Santa Fe Springs, the crooked-hole problem, as it was then called, occupied a primary position among the topics of the day in the fields of California and the Mid-Continent.
