[Minerals, generally of great geological age, are to a very large extent the material basis of what we know as modern civilization. In most of the so-called civilized world the use f minerals has become such a commonplace that it is easy to se sight of their importance. It was the use of minerals, obably more than anything else, that made it possible for e American people to expand from the Atlantic seaboard the Pacific in a little over one hundred years. As the 1 to use the natural wealth at hand constitutes a funda¬ental element in American life, there seems to be justification for the thought that American geography is largely mineral geography. Of all American environmental reactions, the most striking are those which have come about through the use of the metals and the power fuels. If we turn to the ancient industry of agriculture, we find very little that is unique in North America except those developments which have come about through the use of machinery and transportation, both of which are contingent upon the use of minerals. Practically every crop now grown n North America was grown in some part of Europe before merica was discovered. One can point out exceptions to statement but in general it is true. Discussion of the paper of E. J. Hall and C. W. Drury, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 78, June, 1913, pp. 1059 to 1066. A. M. SMOOT,* New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary +) :-The nails method is given in many text books on assaying as a standard method for gold or for gold and silver in ores. It appears to be taught in the laboratories of technical and scientific schools as a standard method, and to some extent it is used by assayers in actual practice, although the class of ores to which it may be applied is limited to those free from reducible metallic compounds, the metals of which would enter the lead button. The experiments of Messrs. Hall and Drury show the inaccuracy of this rnethod for silver, in heavy sulphides, but not so clearly the short-comings with regard to gold. It seems certain that low silver is caused by the solubility of silver in iron-alkali sulphide as compared with its solubility in molten lead; that is, silver is distributed between iron-alkali sulphide and metal in the charge in proportion to solubility at the particular temperature of the fusion. Lead is a fixed quantity in these assay charges, but iron-alkali sulphide increases with increased sulphur, so the more sulphur in the charge, the lower the silver results.

C. Le Neve FosteR, Llandudno, Wales: I regret that Prof. Clowes is not here, and also that I cannot produce one of his lamps for inspection. The lamp has but just passed the experimental stage, and is now on sale in England for the purpose of testing it in practice. The only complaint I have heard made against it is the high price. It costs six or seven guineas. Possibly that would not frighten you on this side of the water as much as it does us. R. W. RaymonD, Brooklyn, N. Y.: So far as my obsrvations and experience go, we have not yet reached a state of affairs in the coal-mines of this country which calls for the general use of safetylamps by common miners. Certainly such a practice is to be avoided if possible, on account of the recklessness of miners, which it seems almost impossible to control by warning or discipliue. It is much better, if practicable, to confine the use of safety-lamps to inspectors or " fire-bosses," and not to permit the miners to work or to go where naked lights cannot be carried. In a colliery near Pottsville, Pa., with which I was connected for five years, and which had the reputation of being highly "fiery " (jets of fire-damp bubbled continually through the puddles in the gangways, and a thin sheet of it lay along the roof), we managed to avoid all serious

INTRODUCTION The Calumet Pumping Station, located on the south side of the Greater Chicago area, is part of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan to accomodate the city's wastewater. The Station consists of two parallel rock caverns, each 18 m high, 20 m wide, and 62 m long, located in Silurian dolomite approximately 91 m below the ground surface. The caverns are oriented N-S with a 24-m-wide pillar between them. Prior to construction, rock mechanics studies were conducted in an L-shaped test adit at the location of the west cavern. The purpo3e of the rock mechanic studies was to characterize the site, particularly the in situ stress field and deformation characteristics of the rock. This information, together with other physical properties of the rock and geologic data, was used to evaluate the stability of the preliminary cavern design, with particular emphasis on cavern orientation, rock reinforcement, and pillar stability. GEOLOGY OF THE SITE Stratigraphy The Chicago area is located on the Kankakee Arch, a broad, gently sloping arch of Paleozoic sediments. Rocks in the project area consist of Silurian dolomites unconformably overlain by Pleistocene glacial deposits. The formations of interest to this study are: - Racine Formation, inter-reef facies. This dolomite is gray- brown, silty, and compact. It contains occasional prominent bedding surfaces. The Racine Formation in the project area varies from 73 to 74 m in thickness.

(communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:

IN the course of an investigation directed toward expanding ground-water facilities in Essex and Morris counties, New Jersey, the Board of Water Commissioners of the city of East Orange authorized a seismic-refraction survey1 for the purpose of delineating bedrock topography below unconsolidated overburden. Results of the survey were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a comparatively detailed bedrock contour map. Knowledge of the bedrock depth and configuration was an important aid in selection of sites for test drilling. The portion of the East Orange Water Reserve under consideration is in the flood plain of the Passaic River about 10 miles west of Newark, N. J. The flood plain is about 175 ft above mean sea level and is bordered by low hills rising to elevations of approximately 250 ft. The bedrock underlying the Water Reserve consists of sandstone and shale of the Triassic Brunswick formation and is covered everywhere by deposits of unconsolidated glacial outwash sand and gravel, lacustrine clay, and recent river silt as much as 150 ft thick. Yield of wells in the sandstone and shale averages 100 to 200 gpm. Since production wells constructed in the sand and gravel aquifer in the buried river valley shown on the contour map (Fig. 1) yield 300 to 1400 gpm, it was proposed to locate additional production wells in this buried valley, where the yields per well would be maximum.

GEOLOGISTS and engineers working around a diamond drill rig have often had the opportunity to observe the magnetic attraction of drill rods pulled out of the hole for core removal. This is sometimes an amusing pastime, but this same magnetic force inadvertently applied to a compass needle can cause it to lose its polarity entirely or to become reverse polarized when placed in the immediate vicinity of stacked rods. The first recommendation, of course, would be to avoid the rods, but in surveying an operating drillhole this is not always possible; therefore steps must be taken to neutralize the magnetic effect of the drill rods. Early in the summer of 1949 the geological department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. undertook at Franklin, N. J., an extensive program of surveying the course of deep diamond drillholes. The majority of the holes were surveyed while in the process of being drilled, and considerable difficulty was encountered. A pattern for the deviation of drillholes had been established for the district from surveys in holes from which the drill rig had been removed. It was observed that a certain operating deep drill- hole being surveyed did not fit this pattern. In the resulting confusion of repeated surveys and cementing a plug for wedging operations, the lower 1800 ft of the hole was lost. Because of this incident studies were initiated to determine the source of the difficulties and to develop safeguards against recurrence of faulty surveys.

ON Saturday evening, Sept. 9, a small party of Institute members, their wives and friends, left New York to attend the Fall Meeting of the Institute at San Francisco. In this party there were: President and Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight; Mr. and Mrs. George D. Barron; Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Stehli; N. S. Spencer and Miss Spencer; the Secretary and Mrs. F. F. Sharpless. They were joined at Chicago by E. F. Eurich, and by Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Baldwin and daughter. Our party was met at Chicago by Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Terrell and W. F. Boericke, who constituted themselves an impromptu entertainment committee and proceeded to carry out a delightful little program. We were taken to the Lake Shore drive, where a stiff wind off the lake refreshed us after a sultry day on the train, and on our return to the city saw Chicago illuminated with all its brilliance of electricity. We were entertained at dinner at the Drake Hotel. In spite of being two hours late getting into Omaha, we were right on the dot at Denver on Tuesday morn-ing. Horace F. Lunt came to the hotel soon after breakfast, and told us that a trip to the mountains had been planned. Having learned the number in the party, he began to gather up his automobiles for a 10 o'clock start.

The Puget Sound Section met at the Arctic Club, Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 20, 1917. Sixteen members and five guests were present. Dinner having been served, the meeting was called to order. A letter from secretary of Associated Engineering Societies was read, requesting payment of this section's assessment to the quarterly budget, and upon motion it was voted that the Secretary-Treasurer be instructed to pay this assessment. It was moved and carried that this section join with the Chemical Society in a meeting. At the, close of the business meeting, Mr. Asa C. Baldwin gave an illustrated lecture on the "Alaska Boundary Survey." On Feb. 24, the Puget Sound Section again held a meeting at the Arctic Club, 16 members and three guests being present. Chester F. Lee, as member of a committee representing this section in the joint council of the Associated Engineering Societies, reported that by lots it had been decided that the term of service of said committee would be as follows: Chester F. Lee, two years; George. Watkin Evans, one year. Following adjournment of the business meeting, Prof. Joseph Daniels, of the University of Washington, delivered a very interesting lecture on "Milling Practice of The Alaska-Castineau Mining Company." The high- and low-cycle fatigue poperties of MAR-M200 directionally -solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms were determined at 1400" and 1700°F. These results were compared with the corresponding properties of conventionally -cast MAR-M200. The low-cycle fatigue lives of the columnar-grained and single crystal materials were similar at both temperatures and were one to two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventionally-cast material. The variations in the fatigue lives among the three forms of MAR-M200 were related to the more rapid rate of intergranular muck propagation compared to that of transgranular propagation. In conventionally-cast MAR-M200, cracks were initiated in grain boundaries and crack popagation occurred rapidly along an almost continuous grain boundary path. In the columnar-grained material, crack initiation occurred on short transverse segments of grain boundaries, but crack propagation was transgranular. The fatigue lives of columnar-grained and single crystal materials were approximately the same because most of the life in both materials was spent in trans-granular propagation. For the directionally -solidified materials, the number of cycles to failure, Nf, can be related to the total strain range, , by: heT = K where n and K are 0.16 and 0.044 at 1400'F and 0.29and 0.098 at 1700, respectively. In addition to intergranular crack initiation in the columnar-grained material, initiation also occurred at we-cracked MC carbides and micropores in both directionally-solidified materials. At 1400°F, fatigue life was reduced with increasing MC carbide size, but at 1700 there was no effect of carbide size. THE creep and stress-rupture properties of conventionally-cast nickel-base superalloys can be greatly improved by directional solidification into either single crystal or columnar-grained forms. The improvement in properties results from a reduction in intergranular cavitation and crack growth in the columnar-grained materials and the complete absence of this fracture mode in the single crystals. This paper describes the effect of grain boundaries on the elevated temperature fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200. The effect of cycling frequency on cracking arid fatigue life and the role of MC carbides and micropores on crack initiation are also emphasized. The fatigue properties of columnar-grained and single crystal MAR-M200 at room tem- perature,4,5 and the change in the mode of fatigue crack propagation with temperature6 have recently been described. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this study was the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200, directionally-solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms. The columnar grains were approximately 0.5 mm in diam. The nominal composition of these materials in wt pct was 0.15C, 9Cr, 12.5W, loco, 5A1. 2Ti, lCb, 0.05Zr. 0.015B, bal Ni. They were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr. which resulted in 0.2 pct offset yield stresses of 150,000? 144,000, and 95,000 psi at room temperature? 1400°, and 1700°F, respectively. The corresponding elastic moduli parallel to the testing direction were 19.2. 15.0, and 12.5 x 106 psi, respectively. Specimen design, testing procedures and alloy mi-crostructure have been described previously and will only be summarized here. Following the 1600°F aging treatment. MAR-M200 contains an ordered, cuboidal, y' precipitate 0.3 1 on edge, which is coherent with the 1 matrix. The y' precipitate is quite stable; even after testing at 1700°F. the precipitate is only slightly enlarged and its corners somewhat rounded. The alloy also contains a small volume fraction of micropores, and MC carbides. some of which contain preexisting cracks5 formed during casting. These cracks are always parallel to the long dimension of the carbide. Measurement of MC carbide size has been described previously.5 Axial fatigue tests were conducted in air over a wide range of strain amplitudes in both the high - and low-cycle fatigue regions, with specimen lives varying from about 10' to 10' cycles. Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were strain-controlled with strain varied between zero and a maximum tensile value at a frequency of about 2 cpm. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) tests were stress-controlled with the stress varied between 5000 psi and a maximum tensile value less than the yield stress at a frequency of either 10 cps or 0.033 cps (2 cpm). The temperature in the gage section was controlled to 52°F. Specimen axes were within 5 deg of the [001] growth axis of the single crystals and the common [001 ] growth axis of the columnar-grained material. Specimen gage sections were electro polished prior to testing. After the standard heat treatment, three specimens were coated with a typical aluminide coating applied as a slurry. An additional specimen was given the coating heat treatment without actually being coated. In all cases: specimens were reaged at 1600°F for 32 hr after receiving the coating heat treatment at 1975'F for 4 hr.

BY August 1944 Canada expects to be shipping 56 percent hematite ore from its new Steep Rock iron mine, via Port Arthur on Lake Superior, to the steelmaking centers in Canada and the United States. This is indeed welcome news to steel men, especially if they operate open hearth furnaces, as the Steep Rock ore is a high-grade lump and will be valuable as charge and feed ore. But better news is the fact that this first big producer of high-grade hematite ore in Canada, since the exhaustion of the Helen mine in the Michipicoten area north of Lake Superior in 1918, has a proved ore body of 16,757,000 long tons and a probable ore body of 14,000,000 long tons, thus giving an over-all total of 30,757,000 long tons and assuring production for a number of years to come.

The resolution drafted by J. W. Richards, J. V. N. Dorr, and Allen H. Rogers on the death of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and adopted by the Board of Directors, is as follows: "The Boards of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers wishes to place on record its great personal loss in the sudden death of Mr. J. E. Johnson, Jr., our fellow Director of the activities of the Institute, a member our Executive Committee, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Admissions, and Vice-chairman of its Iron and Steel Committee. "A mere recital of these positions of trust and responsibility, which he filled with conscientious efficiency and marked ability, shows how greatly the Institute has lost by his death. No one else of the Institute's officers could have been so illy spared. We, his colleagues, take up his tasks with a sense of our inability to discharge them as well as he, and this with a doubled sense of our loss. "Others have written and spoken of the blow which his death has been to the furtherance of the metallurgy of iron and steel. His pre-eminence in this line is one of the facts of which the Institute is justly proud. Here his personality, originality, courageousness in advocating new principles, clearness of writing and forcible presentation of facts, are irreplaceable. His two great treatises on the blast furnace are his literary and scientific memorial.

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

F. N. FLYNN, Clifton, Ariz.-I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson what percentage of his leaching liquor is wasted at this time? It has a bearing on the question in connection with the New Cornelia, and I think it is a very important question. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I am not sure what the percentage is now, but we don't discard the strong liquors. Something like 25 per cent. of the wash water taken out each day is sent over a special set of scrap iron tanks, and the copper recovered there. We had a little trouble at first. We did not proceed to use the sponge iron for the reason that the plant we originally contemplated was abandoned for flotation. Our original idea was to use a leaching process on all the tailings of the mill, but we found it would take a great deal of time to build a plant; and the cost of operating the plant we estimated to be about the same and the recovery the same. It was a question of time with us, and we decided to adopt flotation. That changed our plans. We now have the leaching plant, treating the tailings of the old dump, and the flotation applied to the current tailings. The sponge iron was figured for the large plant. We can get all the scrap iron necessary for the small plant-plenty from the scrap produced in the main plant of the smelter.

Electrochemical measurements have been made of the activity of oxygen in copper and its alloys with silver and tin at 1100" and 1200°C. The galvanic cell used was Pt, Ni + NiO/solid ellectrolyte/[O] in metal, cermet, Pt The results do not support any of the equations so far designed for predicting the activities of dilute solutes in ternary solutions from activities in the corresponding binaries. If, however, a quasichemical equation is used with the coordination number set to unity, agreement between observed and calculated activities shows that this empirical relationship can be useful over a fair range of conditions. SEVERAL solution models have been proposed for predicting the activity coefficients of dilute solutes in ternary alloys from a knowledge of the three binary systems involved. Alcock and Richardson1 have shown that a regular model, and a quasichemical model,' in which the dissolved oxygen is coordinated with eight or so metal atoms, can reasonably predict the behavior of both metal and nonmetal solutes when the heats of solution of the solute in the separate solvent metals are similar. But when this is not so, neither model gives useful predictions unless coordination numbers of one or two are assumed. Wada and Saito3 subsequently adopted a similar model to derive the interaction energies for two dilute solutes in a solvent metal. Belton and Tankins4 Rave proposed both regular and quasichemical type models in which the oxygen is bound into molecular species, such as NiO and CuO in mixtures of Cu + Ni + 0. However, their models have only been tested on systems in which the excess free energies of solution of the solute in the two separate metals differ by a few kilocalories. Ope of the reasons why more advanced models have not been proposed is because few complete sets of data exist for ternary systems in which the solute behaves very differently in the two separate metals. For this reason measurements have been made of the activities of oxygen dissolved in Cu + Ag and Cu + Sn. Measurements on both systems were made by means of the electrochemical cell, Pt, Ni + NiO/solid electrolyte/O(in alloy), cermet,Pt [1] The activity of oxygen was calculated from the electromotive force and the standard free energy of formation of NiO, which is accurately known.5 Before investigating the alloys, studies were made of oxygen in copper to test the reliability of the cell and to check the thermodynamics of the system. Of the previous studies those by Sano and Sakao,6 Tom-linson and Young,7 and Tankins et al.8,7 have been made with gas-metal equilibrium techniques; those by Diaz and Richardson,9 Osterwald,10 wilder," Plusch-kell and Engell,12 Rickert and wagner,13 and Fischer and Ackermann14 have been made by electrochemical methods. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus employed was the same as described previously,9 apart from slight modification. The molten sample of approximately 40 g was held in a high grade alumina crucible 1.2 in. OD and 1.6 in. long. The solid electrolytes were ZrO2 + 7½ wt pct CaO and ZrO2 + 15 wt pct CaO; the tubes 4 in. OD and 6 in. long were supplied by the Zirconia Corp. of America. They were closed (flat) at one end. In one experiment with Cu + O, both electrolytes were used in the cell at the same time. The reference electrodes inside the electrolyte tubes consisted of a mixture of Ni + NiO. They were made by mixing the powdered materials and pressing them manually into the ends of the tubes, with a platinum lead embedded in them. The tubes were then sintered overnight in the electromotive force apparatus at 1100°C. By sintering the powders inside the tubes (instead of using a presintered pellet9) better contacts were obtained between the electrolyte, the powder, and the platinum lead. Troubles arising from polarization9 were thus much reduced. The electromotive force was measured by a Vibron Electrometer with an input impedence of 1017 ohm; the temperature was measured with a Pt:13 pct Rh + Pt thermocouple protected by an alumina sheath. The couple was calibrated against the melting point of copper. The cermet conducting lead of Cr + 28 pct Al2O3, previously found to be satisfactory9 for use with Cu + 0 was also found satisfactory with Cu + Ag + 0 and Cu + Sn + 0. Superficial oxidation was observed, but it did not interfere with the working of the cell. The reaction tube containing the cell was closed at each end with cooled brass heads and suspended in a platinum resistance furnace. The tube was electrically shielded by a Kanthal A-1 ribbon which was wound round it, and the ribbon was protected by a N2 atmosphere between the furnace and the reaction tube. The cell was protected by a stream of high purity argon which was dried and passed through copper gauze at 450°C and titanium chips at 900°C. All the metals used were of spectrographic standard. THE writer has reread Mr. Ingalls' interesting article in the July, 1923, issue of MINING AND METAL- LURGY on "The Use of Spelter in Galvanizing." It seems that most writers, in commenting upon coatings of spelter on sheets and wire, dwell upon the thin coatings which these materials carry, and rightly so. However, they seem to forget that until very recently, in the case of wire, the manufacturer did not know how to apply a heavy coating of spelter to the wire, especially if the wire was to be woven into fence or fabricated in some other manner, because heavy coatings of spelter are exceedingly brittle. This is even true in the case of high-grade spelter, but to a lesser degree than with Prime Western. Because of this brittleness, it has been necessary for wire manufacturers to smooth the coating by passing the wire through tightly compressed wiping means of some kind, usually asbestos. This removes all of the excess spelter and allows only a thin coating to remain. The latter, as a rule, is malleable and the wire can be fabricated without material injury to the coating.

The host dolomite of the Pine Point lead-zinc ore is a prolific ground-water aquifer that occurs locally under watertable and artesian conditions. Mining schedules and severe climate require rapid and thorough dewatering of open pits. Pumping-test methods, common to ground-water supply studies, were applied to dewatering design for a model ore pit in 1968. Procedures for testing and design at other ore bodies were established and have been carried out successfully by mine personnel. At the inception of ground-water studies, parts of ore bodies were below prevailing ground-water levels by 35 to more than 150 ft. Movement of ground water through the coarsely recrystallized dolomite occurs largely through fractures and solution openings. Because the overburden deposits consist mainly of glacial till, it is estimated that the recharge to the aquifer is about 25% of the 13-in. annual precipitation. Natural groundwater flow is northeastward toward Great Slave Lake. Background data included extensive diamond drill hole logs and cores and static level data for a number of ore pits. An ore pit, known as N-42, that required 40 ft of dewatering was selected for the initial application of the pumping-test method. Production wells, cased with 14in. pipe, were drilled to a depth of 300 ft on the rim of the ore pit. IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at. Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

Probably it won't happen to us again in a thousand years, but it was very embarassing at the time. It is only because of certain matters that have come up this month that we tell you at all about it. At the beginning of our trip to Peru and Chile last summer, we were flying with Bill Haddon from Lima to Tacna aboard Fawcett. Being an old hand at foreign travel, particularly in South America, we felt obliged to explain some of the special features of travel in Latin America and the niceties of etiquette in particular and were so engaged when the plane landed at the airport. We led the way briskly into the terminal, expecting at any moment to have a representative of Southern Peru Copper pop up and present himself. However, this didn't happen so we repaired to the baggage arrival station to wait. All the bags were quickly picked up, but ours were no where to be seen. Bill was slightly agitated because the plane was being buttoned up for take off. However, rising to the emergency with our usual aplomb, we took charge of the situation. Brandishing the claim checks under the nose of the porter who pointed to them and said, "si, Tacna," we nodded briskly and in our serviceable Spanish said "si se[n]or, vayase viejo, rapido." He was off and back with our suitcases quickly enough.
