The tin deposit of Monserrat; Bolivia, consists of one major vein 1600 m in length. The ore is unusual because of the notable quantity of teallite, even though cassiterite is the principal tin mineral. The deposit, formed at shallow depth under a wide range in temperature, may be classed as xenothermal. Polished sections reveal a complex history of replacement, with low-temperature minerals deposited before high-temperature minerals.

Fine powders of lead zirconate titanate have been prepared by three different methods such as ball milling, conventional coprecipitation and spray drying. Different powders have also been prepared by changing the process variables in each method. These powders were analysed for particle size chemical composition and reactivity. DTA, TGA and x-ray analysis have been carried out to study the lead zirconate titanate formation with reference to calcination temperatures. The calcined powders were then consolidated by compaction and sintering. An attempt has bean made to explain the consolidation behaviour of these powders on the basis of powder characteristics.

The process for determining phosphorus in iron now in most general use in the laboratories of iron and steel works, is, I think, the one proposed bv Mr. Emmerton." In this process the solution of the iron for precipitation by ammonium molybdate is effected by treating the iron with nitric acid, evaporating to hard dryness in a dish, taking up with hydrochloric acid and driving off the greater portion of the hydrochloric by nitric acid. This procedure accomplishes, first, the destruction of all the carbonaceous matters; and, second; it renders all the silica insoluble. The annual report f the Secretary of the Navy for the fiscal year, ending June 30, 1917, but including operations and recommendations up to Dec. 1 of that year, contains the following remark about the activities of the Naval Consulting Board. The members of the Institute who are members f this Board are William L. Saunders, Benjamin B. Thayer, Thomas A. Edison, Thomas Robins, Lawrence Addicks, Joseph W. Richards, W. R. Whitney, assisted by 47 other members f the Institute, in the capacity of associate members of the Naval Consulting Board. During the year, the work of this board, organized and approved by Congress in 1915, has increased very materially in importance and volume, its meetings have been frequent and the work of its individual members has been such in some cases as to occupy almost their entire time in the service of the Government. Some time before the active entry of this country into war the board called a special meeting to which were invited some 50 of the leading scientists and industrial managers, whose special study fitted them to advise on the methods of meeting the

The Library of the above-named Societies is open frond 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated front sources of information. To these the Library, through Its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining neaps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be, sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

IN contemplating the prospects of natural gas being transported from the fields where it is produced to such distant points as Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York City, and New England, let us review the advance that natural gas has made and the projects currently scheduled for construction. This may give us a perspective of the point in the long-range development of the natural gas business in which we now find ourselves, and some basis for judging the further expansion of the industry. Authentic statistics of the total marketed production of natural gas in the United States have been compiled by the Bureau of Mines since the year 1906. The growth of the business is indicated by the following data on marketed production for each ten-year interval since 1906:

With the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, the direction of the main concentration of effort of the United States was changed. In order to win the war, all industrial efforts had to be organized and centralized. With the war won and peace in sight, this centralization of effort stopped and the full play of individual initiative was allowed to resume its sway in the community. During this period of reversal of direction of effort, there was a natural loss of momentum and the United States, as well as the rest of the world, is in for a period of readjustment. The immense progress that was made in one direction under the stress of the necessities of war, which focused the energies of a nation in one direction, is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished if a community with many varying interests can be united on one objective which it desires to attain. The realization that the fusing of many interests into one stream of effort is difficult should not prevent us from taking the long view ahead that is necessary in order to be able to measure the progress made. If we don't have a mountain peak to guide us, we are very likely to run in circles in the plain without reaching the goal to which we strive. The most efficient development of natural resources is an ideal that, from a material point of view, appeals to the engineer. This ideal includes giving of opportunities to everyone to take a share in the development of these resources.. It also contemplates rewarding foresight

INTRODUCTION Detonations of high explosives in soil and rock have been used frequently in civil engineering applications. Of particular interest in recent years has been the development of test methods to simulate the desired blast and shock environments for the testing of protective structures. The United States Air Force, in particular, the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, in conjunction with the Defense Atomic Support Agency, has in recent years, developed special technology for simulation testing of protective structures in soil and rock media. Such a technology, although initially developed for military applications, is rapidly finding its way into civil applications. One of the major problems in the design of the simulation test is the correct prediction of ground motion induced by the detonation of high explosives. This paper presents a useful prediction method which is developed specifically for ground motion in rock that is induced by the detonation of a buried planar array of explosive columns (See Figure 1). The technique of simulating shock environment using such an array is called the Direct Induced High Explosive Simulation Tech- nique (DIHEST). Normally, each shot hole may contain canisters of ammonium nitrate positioned at various depths, or a slurry explosive with detonators positioned along its length (See Figure 1). The depth and width of the array, the spacing of shot holes, the spacing of detonators, the degree of containment, and the charge weight are the variables which govern the induced ground motion

At this time, when electricity in its various applications is attract- ing so much interest, and with such good reason, it has been suggested to me that, as the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, of Aspen, Pitkin county, Colorado, was the first mining company in America to employ electrical power for hoisting, a record of what has been accomplished by this company would be of interest. Early in the year 1888 the question of power for the development of the ore-horizon lying below the level of the tunnel through which the property is worked, became one of importance. The conditions under which it was proposed to use power were as follows (See Fig. 1): The company's mines lie upon the northwestern slope of a mountain, the ascent of which is at an angle of 28' from the horizon. The ore, consisting of argentiferous galena and other silver-bearing mineral, is found at or near the plane of contact of a superincumbent mass of blue limestone, with an underlying bed of dolomite. THE recurrence of mine-fires in Nevada during the past decade is not only a matter of interest, but also one of considerable concern to engineers and mine-managers. The more important fires may he enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire., Gold Hill, April 21, 1903 ; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft, destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000.; Cause Unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated it $100,000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909 ; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause ' probably electric wires." Belcher Shaft fire, Gold Hill, Aug. 9, 1910; shaft-house destroyed, machinery ruined, and upper part of shaft damaged; damage, $25,000; no cause given. Belmont Mine fire, Tonopah, Feb. 23, 1911; fire started in winze ; 17 men killed. (NOTE 1.-On June 11, 1912, some time after the present paper was written, a fire broke out in the pump-room on the 2475 station of the Ward shaft, Virginia City. This fire was caused by the short-circuiting and exploding of the starting-switch on No. 5 pump. The oil in the switch was scattered about and set fire to the timbers and laming of the pump-room. ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

ArcHodrilling (Arcuate Hole Drilling) of short radius overhead curved holes from within the working level with a new, small-diameter in-the-hole drill produces tangible, assayable chip samples from the entire height of the projected mine level where the hole arcs down immediately in front of the working face. Drilling through the projected level with diamond coring tools produces samples showing the competence of roof and floor strata as well as the geological and economic characteristics of the ore. Hand-portable solid state electronic surveying instrument has been developed to survey the ArcHole and a convenient nomograph plotting record sheet converts survey digital readouts to hole inclination in degrees, to radius of curvature in feet, and to attitude of the plane of curvature from vertical in degrees, all without calculation. The ArcHodrilling system offers a tool with which the exploration geologist can more nearly assess the true potential of old mining properties being reexamined and to reduce the number of surface diamond drill holes needed to secure development data about new ore bodies. It gives the mine geologist an opportunity to secure those data at a fraction of the cost of drilling from the surface. The mining supervisor has a convenient, cheap tool to look ahead to know what he will be mining tomorrow. The mill supervisor has an opportunity to reduce his mineral loss in tailings by being able to anticipate the grade of his mill feed.

Various methods are given for estimating the number per unit volume and average size of convex particles from measurements on a projection through a slice of the structure. The determination of the size distribution is considered specifically for spherical particles. The results are applicable to any type of transmission microscopy and also to the correction of measurements made by reflected light on semitransparent materials. WITH the advent of electron transmission microscopy, the metallurgist is confronted with the problem of relating a projected image to the three-dimensional properties of the structure. This paper deals with the estimation of the number per unit volume and size of particles dispersed in a matrix. The case of convex particles will first be treated (the results will be applicable as approximations to particles of more general shape) and then spherical particles will be considered specifically. The latter represent a special case frequently encountered in practice and one which is also amenable to a calculation of the effect of overlap on the observed particle-size distribution. Although the present treatment was prompted by the needs of the electron microscopist, the results are applicable to transmission studies with any type of radiation. In addition, they can be used in the analysis of semitransparent materials by reflected light, the depth of light penetration corresponding to the thickness of the slice or section used in the transmission studies. 1) CONVEX PARTICLES 1.1) General Expression for N,. We will suppose that a "center" (such as the center of mass) is assigned to each particle. The convention used for defining the center is immaterial providing it does not depend on the orientation or location of the particle. Consider a slice through the structure having a pair of parallel faces a distance t apart. It will be assumed that the slice is randomly located with respect to its perpendicular distance from some fixed point, but it is not necessary to assume that its orientation is random. Our problem is to deduce the relationship between the number of par- ticle images seen on an orthogonal projection through the slice with the number, Nv, of particles per unit volume in the original structure.* *Symbols are listed in the Table. The expected number of particles with centers lying within the slice is Nvt per unit area. In addition, there will be elements in the slice contributed by particles whose centers lie without. The number of such elements will be the same as the number of intersections occurring on a two-dimensional plane through the structure; namely N~K, where K is the mean distance, Fig. 1, between tangent planes to a particle averaged over all particles, i.e., Where Ni is the number of particles of class i having the same shape and size, and pi (4, 8) is the probability that an i particle will have a given orientation with respect to the slice. If the particles are randomly oriented, then K is independent of the orientation of the slice and equal to the mean cali-per diameter. The total number of particle elements in the slice is therefore Nv(t + K) per unit area, but fewer will be seen as separate images on the projection plane because of overlap. If MA is the number of elements "lost" by overlap, the number of images per unit area will be NA = Nv(t + K) -MA 121 MA is a function of the slice thickness and must vanish at t = 0. That the death of Martin Coryell, which occurred at Lambertville, New Jersey, on Monday morning, November 29th, touched the sympathies of a wide circle of professional associates and personal friends, was amply testified by the gathering at the funeral services on Friday. Like his distinguished friend and neighbor, the late Ashbel Welch, Mr. Coryell was one of those pioneers in American engineering to whom we owe the great railway and canal systems which lie at the base of our national prosperity, and who have consequently enjoyed the respect and esteem of their successors of the present generation. Martin Coryell was born July 20th, 1815, at New ope, Rucks County, Pa., and was educated principally in the schools of his native town arid of Lambertville, New Jersey, to which place he returned for permanent residence fifty years later. With the exception of a brief period in youth, during which, to restore his failing health, he learned and practiced for a few months the carpenter's trade, and another brief period, later in life, when he read law for a time in the office of B. H. Brewster, of Philadelphia, afterwards Attorney-General of the United States, Mr. Coryell may be said to have spent his life as an active civil and mining engineer. Even these two episodes can scarcely be said to have been deviations from that profession, since they served to give him more thorough preparation for constructive and administrative work. The Delaware Division Canal, the Raritan Canal, and the Brunswick Canal, are among those upon which Mr. Coryell was employed. For the Raritan Canal Company, under the superintendence of Ashbel Welch, he located the greater part of the Belvidere Railroad (now the Belvidere division of the Pennsylvania Railroad), and directed its construction from Trenton to Lambertville. He was also active as a mining engineer, being one of the early pioneers of mining in the Lake Superior copper region, and had much to do with the development of the Hazleton coalfield and the railroad which has since expanded into the Lehigh Valley system. In 1862, he removed to Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1864, he became manager of the Warrior Run Mining Company. One of the editors
