The chief purpose of this note is to call attention to the triaxial diagram as a convenient means of illustrating the properties of slags, and by this example of its use to commend it to those inclined to graphical studies having other possible applications. Explanation.—In the common or di-axial diagram, the properties corresponding to any point are determined by its perpendicular distance from each of two axes. For example, in an ordinary stress-strain diagram the properties of a given point in the curve are, first, a stress cd so many pounds per square inch, because its perpendicular distance from the horizontal axis of the diagram corresponds by the vertical scale to that stress; and second, a strain or elongation of so many per cent., because its perpendicular distance from the vertical axis corresponds by the horizontal scale to that elongation. TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost: are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger" was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil; have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo-physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electrochemical circles since 1910."

More than 100 minerals are mined and processed in the U. S. Management and labor have negotiated wage-scale agreements that have balanced wages and affected cost of labor in such a manner that comparisons can be made of transportation costs. Transportation of materials underground has become of vital importance. This report describes underground haulage methods and equipment, presents cost analyses, and discusses future plans for underground transportation in metal mines. It does not cover hoisting in shafts or slopes by cage, skip, or cars. Advancements have been made by the metal mining industry in lowering transportation costs in several mines, making it possible to mine orebodies or portions of orebodies not considered economically recoverable a few years ago. Numerous reports have been written on transportation at metal mines; this report covers recent haulage at some representative mines throughout the U.S. The term metal mine is used to include all noncoal mines from which up-to-date information was obtainable.

Since its development about forty years ago by J. V. N. Dorr (Cyanidation and Concentration of Gold and Silver Ores, McGraw Hill Book Co., 1936, 1-5), and others, continuous countercurrent decantation has not only become one of the standard methods for extracting gold and silver from their ores, but has also found wide application in other metallurgical and chemical industries. In 1917 L. B. Eames published an excellent paper (Countercurrent Decantation, Trans AIME, 1917, 57, 143- 158), in which he determined the effects of grade of ore, ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated, variations in the density of the thickener spigot discharge and variations in the value of the barren solution upon the gold assay of the solutions discharged from the thickeners in the system. Eames showed that, other things being equal, the dissolved gold lost in the tailing varies directly as the value of the ore and as the value of the barren solution. The tailing loss de- creases rapidly as the ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated is increased to about three or four to one. Beyond this point the improvement is negligible.

PILOTED by Cadwallader, Evans, Jr., as chairman, the Coal Division got under way Monday morning for the first of three consecutive sessions. N. F. Patton started the ball rolling with a paper on the economics of anthracite distribution, which was ably discussed by H. J. Rose, W. S. Blauvelt, and others. Mr. Patton pointed out many incongruities in freight rates, dealers' margins, and other factors which are disturbing the distribution of anthracite, one result being that trucks are hauling at least six million tons of anthracite annually, half of which is stolen. In the discussion of the papers the desirability of greater uniformity in the production and shipment of coal from month to month was urged; with larger summer price concessions as a means toward this end. "Performance Expectancy of Domestic Underfeed Stokers for Anthracite," by Allen J. Johnson, brought this important platter down to date by showing the range in capacities and efficiencies to be expected from well-made stokers, and by detailing other of their operating characteristics. At present the demands of the United States for strorltium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. Domestic deposits arc known in many states, but the larger and purer ones are in the West, particularly in the desert region of southeastern California and western Arizona. These deposits are large enough to command interest, particularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investigation of the mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the spring of 1934. Mr. D. F. Hewett, who had general charge of the investigation, Mr. W. T. Schaller and Mr. M. I. Goldman contributed many helpful suggestions. Mr. N. H. Harshman assisted efficiently during the field work. Celestite Deposits The celestite deposits described in this paper are of sedimentary origin and Tertiary age. They are widely scattered, as shown on Fig. 1,

THE McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dikes of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compressive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. During the important period of vein formation, two zones were developed-an inner productive zone in which the quartz veins are ankerite-bearing and an outer barren zone in which the quartz veins are calcite-bearing. The vein solutions originated in the same magrna that supplied the albitit,e dikes.

THE year just ended was the 50th anniversary of that first flight at Kittyhawk, N. C., in 1903. In this 50-year period the aviation industry made startling developments from flight distances of 120 ft-at snail's pace-to speeds of over 1300 mph and flights that circle the globe. And 1953 also was the 50th anniversary of the Utah Copper Co., the Father of our mass production porphyry copper ventures. How do developments in the mining industry stack up with the aviation industry? The mineral industry can be as proud of developments over the past 50 years as the aviation industry. Only for the developments of the mineral industry could aviation and other allied industries advance as they have. The year 1953 made its contribution to this progress, with the normal number of process and equipment developments and an abnormally high amount of activity in new plant capacity, particularly copper. Tonnages are on the increase and operating troubles are becoming more and more problems in materials handling and control. We're approaching molecular dissemination of ores with hydro and pyro methods coming to the front to take over where flotation leaves off.

General Geology of the Northern Black Hills. The " Black Hills of Dakota," to the northern part of which the following observations apply, occupy a position on either side of the boundary between Wyoming and South Dakota, approximately between 103" 15' and 104" 48' of west longitude and 43 15' to 43" 50' of north latitude. The area is roughly 4160 square miles.* (See Plate I.) As has been pointed out by Profs. H. O. Hofman, I?. R. Carpenter and others, and illustrated by Mr. Newton in the publications of the United States Geological Survey, these hills are made up of a large number of the known formations from the Archean to the Tertiary, which latter constitutes the border of the region. The mining operations are largely confined to the interior of this area, and the centers from which they are conducted (Deadwood, Lead City, Galena, etc.) are situated near the line of junction of the Archean schists and quartzite, supposed to represent the Potsdam Sandstone of the N. Y. series, or the lowest of the Paleozoic measures. The Archean or pre-Paleozoic rocks consist mainly of a mica-schist in which hornblende and garnet are frequently

THE following notes represent significant excerpts from a mass of records of experimental work done in the ore-dressing laboratory at the Columbia School of Mines during the years 1926 to 1928-inclusive. CLASSIFICATION OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general -headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils) c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agents. a. A method for quantifying frothing effect. b. Relation between frothing effect and chemical composition. III. Inorganic reagents. a. Methods of studying the effects of these reagents. b. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINS OF PRESENT-DAY FLOTATION PRACTICE The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.1 The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when' compared with those used today.

Bethlehem Steel Co. has just brought an all-new iron ore mine into production at Marmora, Canada, about 120 miles east of Toronto. High grade pellets produced at the mine from open-pit magnetite ore travel 64 miles by rail to the port at Picton, then go by Lake boat to help supply Bethlehem's Lackawanna, N. Y., plant. At full production about half a million tons of pellets a year will be shipped, and mining will be at a scale of more than a million tons per year of ore. Aeromagnetic surveys carried out in 1949 by the Ontario Dept. of Mines and the Canadian Geological Survey revealed an anomaly that interested Bethlehem geologists. By 1951 the company had put down some 40 diamond drillholes ranging from 460 to 1800 ft to block out the magnetite replacement deposit which lies in pre-Cambrian limestone below about 130 ft of Paleozoic limestone. The orebody, roughly 2100 ft long and up to 400 ft wide, averages about 37 pct iron, too low for direct shipment. Forty-sixth Meeting The forty-sixth meeting of the Boston section was held at the University Club on Monday evening, Jan. 28, 1918. Thirty-six members and guests were present, which is a record for this Section. After a good dinner, President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, was introduced, and spoke of the many problems of the Institute. The topics covered were the progress and growth of the Institute during the administrative year, the efforts to stimulate the local sections and to bring them more in touch with the policies and problems of the parent body and, last but not least, of the constructive results and patriotic work of the Institute in the national service of the war. The other guest of the Section, Mr. Thomas Nelson Perkins, Counsel for the Priority Board, spoke most entertainingly of recent experiences in Russia, England and France. After considerable discussion during which Mr. Perkins most obligingly answered innumerable questions, the meeting adjourned at about 10 p. m.

The fracture behavior of 60-deg-oriented sapphire crystals was investigated for both tension and compression. Plastic flow on the basal plane was found to be a factor in reducing the tensile stress required to produce fracture in the temperature RECENT experiments1-' have shown that single crystals of a alumina (sapphire) can deform plastically, particularly at temperatures greater than 1000°C. The effect of this plastic flow on the fracture behavior of sapphire was not established, but range 1100º to 1500ºC. Mechanical twins, both (0001) and (0111) types, were produced by compression in the temperature range 1100" to 1300°C. Cracks propagated more readily along the twin boundaries than in the nontwinned crystal. experiments with other ceramic crystals4'5 have shown that plastic flow can initiate cracks that lead to catastrophic failure. This suggests by analogy that plastic flow might also be an important factor in the fracture of sapphire crystals. A recent experimental investigationS undertaken to determine the mechanism of plastic flow in sapphire provided an opportunity to study the type of fracture produced after various amounts of plastic shear strain. BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade-mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal.

A FULL understanding of the behavior of sulphur in the basic open-hearth process has been delayed by lack of dependable data covering a wide range of slag conditions in the absence of other complicating factors that are likely to be present under operating conditions. It has been generally accepted that strongly basic slags will dissolve more sulphur than will those in which the acidic and basic constituents are more nearly balanced. It has been known that both slag and metal would absorb sulphur from the flame when the sulphur content of the fuel is high. It has been generally believed that manganese assists in the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. Almost nothing has been known of the effect of temperature upon desulphurization; the data have been conflicting and there has been a tendency to depend rather heavily upon analogy with the better understood desulphurizing reaction of the blast furnace. Many attempts have been made to build up from open-hearth data a satisfactory theory of the chemical reactions involved in the process. That this has been an extremely difficult task is owing to two reasons that have been very generally recognized. The first is the parallel and simultaneous reaction of sulphur transfer between flame and bath. The second is the difficulty of distinguishing between the factors that ultimately limit the transfer from metal to slag-i.e., equilibrium conditions-and those whose influence is only upon the rate of transfer. It has been the object of the work here recounted to study the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between slag and metal in the absence of these complicating factors, with the hope that a better understanding of the equilibria involved would lead to a better control of the over-all process in the open-hearth furnace. A review of the literature on steelmaking reveals almost complete agreement with respect to the paramount importance of lime in promoting desulphurization. In expressing this effect in quantitative terms, however, and in formulating the relationships between the concentrations of other slag components and the desulphurizing power, there is little agreement. For instance, the "basicity" or basic strength of the slag is commonly measured by some kind of ratio of concentration of basic to acidic oxides. Case studies of the behaviour of large open stopes at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Mine, Broken Hill and the CSA Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. are considered. Deformations were measured by multipoint rod extensometers in sufficient detail to note the phases of rock behaviour, from intact through to rock-fall. In one case readings were obtained from a zone of stress failure in which two bumps, felt as ground tremors, occurred. In this case noise and stress were also monitored. Deformations were analysed in relation to previously measured in situ rock stress, and conclusions drawn about the degree of conformity to, and the areas of departure from, elastic model behaviour. Attempts to describe the growth of instability utilize reduction factors of the apparent modulus, a magnification factor for the apparent Poisson's ratio, and a correlation between progressive noise count and displacement. Monitoring itself is seen as an aid in determiing the final dimensions of stopes and pillars. One large stope, of intermediate dimension 80 m, was mined essentially without change of plan, whereas a change in mining plan was necessary in other stopes. Aspects of interest to mine planners, and areas where futher research is needed, are indicated.

The object of the present paper is to describe a primitive method of gold-extraction, practiced by a small colony of Chinese in the district of Tomoh, one of the Siamese-Malayan States. This district has been worked for gold about 150 years, but has been only twice or thrice visited by Europeans, who are looked upon with a good deal of jealousy by the miners. The gold-district, covering not more than 10 square miles, is situated about Lat. 5' 47l N. and Long. -101' 39 E., on the headwaters of the river Teluban. It is a very mountainous region, lying on the northern flanks of the great range that forms the watershed between the rivers Patani, Kelantan, Teluban, etc., on the north and Perak on the south. The gold occurs in narrow veins and leaders of quartz, intersect- ' ing and intercalated among irregularly upheaved and contorted, highly metamorphosed, micaceous and chloritic schists. These veins vary between 3 inches and 3 feet in thickness, and are sometimes very rich. The geology of this region is thus very similar to that characterizing gold-regions all over the world; if must, however, be.
