When mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 131/2 per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time.. * At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 Ib. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13.5 per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 51/2 in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 51/2 in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an important consideration if the casting is to be a moving part in a machine. At the same time, the thickness of 51/2 in. is sufficient to permit the use of manganese steel for the heaviest classes of machinery.

FOLLOWING the deformation 01 zinc monocrys-tals, sharply bent basal planes are observed near several types of inhomogeneities. Three of these in-homogeneities have characteristics which are quite regular so that they can be studied and analyzed. These are compressive kink bands, "deformation bands," and the inhomogeneities near end restraints. The present paper describes experiments in which "deformation bands" were artificially produced, and bend plane phenomena are discussed in terms of dislocation theory. Also, two new bend plane phenomena are described. The importance of bend plane phenomena in the deformation of crystals is not widely recognized. Many phenomena may be explained in a manner similar to the discussion in this paper. Jillson1 has pointed out that the "punching effect" in zinc is a bend plane phenomenon and is not caused by prismatic slip.' Bowles3 has suggested that they may be involved in diffusionless phase changes. Cahn4 has discussed the role of bend plane formation in the polygonization of zinc. Experimental Work Tensile Kink Bands: Because of the geometrical similarity between "deformation bands" and "kink bands" (compare Fig. 1 of this paper with Fig. 1 of the paper by Hess and Barrett"), the band shown in Fig. 1 of this paper will be called a "tensile kink band," and that shown by Hess and Barrett will be called a "compressive kink band." It is felt that the term "deformation band" should be reserved for banded structures in polycrystalline materials such as iron." Tensile kink bands seem to form spontaneously in aluminum crystals deformed by tensile loading.7-10 In zinc and cadmium crystals they do not form in good, carefully loaded specimens.'." However, tensile kink bands can be produced artificially in zinc crystals. The present authors did this by scratching one of the flat surfaces of triangular crystals transversely with a sharp needle. Natural tensile kink bands caused by inhomogeneities sometimes appeared in deformed crystals which were identical in appearance with the artificially produced ones. Zinc monocrystals were grown by the Bridgman method in graphite molds. Chemically pure zinc (99.999+ pct Zn) was used and the molds were sealed inside evacuated pyrex tubes during growth. The crystal cross sections were equilateral triangles with a typical base of 0.210 in. The artificial kink band shown in Fig. 1 is typical of tensile kink bands in zinc. The band lies between two bend planes which run from upper right to lower left and is inclined oppositely to the slip bands which are sharply bent at the two bend planes. The general form of the artificial tensile kink bands was independent of the scratch depth (1 to 5 mils deep) and also independent of which side was scratched. These variables did cause variations, however. Deep scratches produced more localized kink bands than light scratches. Also, if the angle between the slip plane traces and a transverse scratch varied appreciably among the three sides, then localization of the resulting kink bands also varied. Furthermore, if the slip direction lay nearly parallel to the scratched side, the band was more developed near the scratched side than at the opposite edge. Scratches produced tensile kink bands for crystal orientations from xo = 15" to x, = 75". Fig. 2 shows a scratched crystal after deformation. One triangular side lies in the plane of the photograph. The right hand tensile kink band was produced by a transverse scratch on the upper right side. The next two kink bands were the result of scratches on the front surface. The kink band at the left was caused by a scratch on the lower back side. All four bands have the same general form. A longitudinal scratch was also made on the crystal shown in Fig. 2 to determine the effect of a scratch on the critical shear stress. The critical shear stress of the scratched region was 33.9 g per sq mm compared to 24.4 g per sq mm for the un-scratched region above it. Fig. 3 shows Laue patterns of the crystal shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3a shows the pattern of the undeformed crystal. The orientation was x, = 21°, A, = 31". After deformation, Fig. 3b was made of the homogeneously deformed portion of the crystal. The spots are compact but split into two halves. This region was elongated 45 pct and its orientation was x = 14", X = 20"; the sine law predicts x = 14", A = 20.5". Fig. 3c was taken near the center of the middle tensile kink band of Fig. 2. The pattern shows a range of orientations and polygonization in this region. The spread in orientation was due to the fact that the basal planes were curved (see Fig. 1) rather than flat as in the ideal case. Some may also have been the result of elastic distortions and "local curvatures." The orientation range was x = 23" to 32", A = 30" to 42". It is apparent from Fig. 3 that the material inside and outside the kink band rotated in opposite directions with respect to the tension axis during deformation. The phases and equilibria in the W-Co-C system have been studied by X-ray diffraction methods, metallographic technique, and thermal analysis. In addition to the 7 phase, two double carbides, called 8 and have been revealed. The compositions correspond to CO3 W6C2 and Co3-W10C4. The reactions leading to these phases have been explained and tentative diagrams of stable and metastable equilibria proposed. The basic reactions in sintering cobalt cemented tungsten carbides are discussed. THE W-Co-C system is of fundamental importance in practical carbide manufacturing as well as for the understanding of the sintering mechanism. Surprisingly little is known about this system, for the probable reason that all the important alloys are of two-phase structure and that the diagram Co-WC has been treated as a quasi-binary. This obviously is incorrect, because WC decomposes before melting. One ternary phase, 7, of composition Co3W3C has long been known. It was first studied by Adelskold, Sundelin, and Westgren,1 although the isomorphous iron-tungsten carbide was known earlier. There have been in the literature several reports of two 7 phases.' " Also the 7 phase has been considered unstable by Takeda4 and Westgren.1 The Co-WC diagram has been studied by Wyman and Kelley5 and a quasi-binary diagram has been published by Sandford and Trent.2 Takeda has published a tentative Co-W-C diagram, considering both metastable and stable equilibria. However, the lines of two-fold saturation are shown only partially and it seems impossible to complete the diagram without violating the phase theory. Therefore it seemed desirable to examine the system in more detail. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in the present investigation were made of powders of tungsten, tungsten monocarbide, cobalt, and carbon and were of the grade used in manufacture of commercial cemented carbides. The powders were ground and mixed in small stainless steel ball mills, using balls of the same material. Benzene was used as a dispersing agent. The mixing period was 1 hr, since this was shown to give suffi- ciently good mixing of the powders without too great a contamination from the mill. After ball milling, the specimens were pressed in cylindrical or rectangular dies. No paraffin or other lubricant was used and the small compacts had sufficient green strength to be handled without difficulty. Several sintering furnaces were employed. The most satisfactory arrangement was a vacuum furnace based on the Arsem principle which employed a graphite helix as the resistance heating element. Specimens were placed on graphite stands and there was generally a slight carburization or decarburiza-tion of the specimen surface, depending on the carbon content of the alloy. The evaporation of the cobalt at a sintering temperature of 1400°C was not significant, but became severe at 1500°C and higher. The sintering time was 1 hr at 2000°C and 2 to 4 hr at lower temperatures. It was not possible to quench the specimens, but the cooling rates were rather fast, greater than 300°C in the first minute. In the system under investigation, the reactions are sluggish, and it is believed that the high temperature structures are satisfactorily retained. The principal method of investigating the sintered specimens was X-ray diffraction by the Norelco recording spectrometer. Approximate determinations of the phase boundaries were made by the disappearing phase method. Ternary Phases To study the phase formation in W-Co-C system, a series of specimens was sintered at 1400°C. In this experiment two ternary phases, called here ? and k were formed in addition to the well-known 7 phase. The 7 phase, which has been completely described by Westgren: showed a range of homogeneity from 7 to 20 pct C and from 38 to 48 pct Co. At 1400°C the 7 phase was found to be in equilibrium with monotungsten carbide, 8, tungsten, 8, #?, and liquid. The boundaries toward #? and liquid were difficult to determine and appeared to be very temperature sensitive. The other boundaries are believed to be well fixed. The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given below. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize THE partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes: first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the subcommittee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A subcommittee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Division annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October meeting, and the award shall be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of .the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medalist." Awards of the medal have been made as follows: 1920—-Robert Woolston Hunt. 192G—John A. Mathews. 1926—Charles Lewis Kinney, Jr. 1929—Edgar Collins Bain. 193G—James Aston. Awards of the prize have been made as follows: 1928—C. H. Herty, Jr. 1929—William E. Griffiths.

Human engineering was the keynote of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which was held in New York, December 3-6. This note was sounded by President Charles T. Main in his address at the opening session and was carried through by all the speakers. In his survey of the year's work, he said that more than 6000 names of engineers were furnished the Government for filling a wide variety of positions. In addition to the 1400 members in service, two members of the council of the society are in uniform in France and one, as a distinct war service, is in charge of one of the largest shipyards. After giving other ways in which the Society has helped the Government, President Main called attention to the necessity for thoroughgoing efforts to increase production and the settlement of questions involving industrial relationships. At the following meeting, President Adams of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers called attention to the necessity of meeting labor in a progressive way, facing labor questions fairly and squarely, as the real interests of labor cannot be separated from those of the engineer. Charles E. Knoeppel, discussing "Industrial Organization as It Affects Executives and Workers," said the problem of the cost of living might be settled in two ways: 1, there must be more producers, and 2, there must be a greater amount supplied by those now producing. The first solution is practicable, he said, if labor is allowed shorter hours, better conditions, and a remuneration that will attract workers. The second can be employed by eliminating waste, standardizing conditions, setting fair tasks, and allowing men to earn an amount that will compensate them for' their skill and cooperation. Dudley R. Kennedy of Philadelphia, employment manager of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation, said the human-engineering phase of the country's industrial development had generally been overlooked. "We hardly yet know what competition means; we will learn it within a few years. Permit me to prophesy that the executive of the next decade will be the man who best knows men. He will be an originator, a handler of men as individuals, a handler of men in the mass, a leader not a driver, a very human man. The science of human engineering is here to stay. The study of human characteristics is the most enduring, as well as the most fascinating in the world, and still the most complex."

During July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co., at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area of 28,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.—No trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 ft., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate in square feet per hour if they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.—The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calculated, but it would be large if really high cuts were made.

This work was part of a general investigation of the territory contiguous to the route of the Government- owned Alaska Railroad. It was conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey to determine the real and potential merits of the mineral deposits, to stimulate development of them, and thus to increase the traffic on the Alaska Railroad.

The base bullion from the lead blast furnace contains varying amounts of the impurities left in the smelter feed by the concentrator, regardless of the method of smelter operation. These impurities may be held in part in mechanical suspension rather than being present as true alloys. However, usually there is little free space in the crucible in which to separate these drosses before the bullion is taken from the lead well. When such a dross is melted in a laboratory crucible and allowed to cool, the products obtained are lead bullion, speiss, and matte in well separated layers. Typical analyses of layers are: Analyses. In general, the drosses made locally are metal sulphides and arsenides and not oxidized compounds. The large content of metallic lead also does not seem to be retained because of oxidized compounds

LONG before the Stone Age, when man first sought shelter where there-were no natural shelters, such as caves and clefts in the rock, he uprooted trees and planted them upside down so that the roots formed the roof. By selecting trees whose roots grew out in a horizontal direction and; by planting these trees close enough - together, a crude shelter was formed. He then took mud, formed a plaster and covered over the' roots. Later the walls were made by using sticks and twigs and plastering between them. It is natural then, that he wiped his muddy hands on- his own hairy body and soon found that the mud was difficult to remove when, dry. It is due, to this discovery that we mix animal hair in 'our modern plaster to increase its strength. The use of fibrous asbestos in some refractory cements has followed this same principle.

INTRODUCTION LKAB produces iron ore in several mines in northern Sweden, and has been doing so for nearly 100 years. Total production to date is 600 million tonnes of finished products of various kinds (pellets, lump ore, fines). Close to 400 million tonnes have been produced by sublevel caving. This method has been the company's standard method for more than 20 years. A review of the development of equipment over the past 15 years and an outlook up to about 1990 leads to the following general re- flections concerning probable trends. Trends for all equipment are increasing precision and stricter environmental requirements will necessitate cabs, remote control etc to an increasing extent. Conventional sublevel caving can be broken down into the following unit operations: 1. Planning incl prospecting drilling. 2. Horizontal drilling. 3. Fan drilling. 4. Charging and blasting. 5. Loading and haulage at sublevels. 6. Ore drawing in chutes. 7. Rock reinforcement. 8. Production service. This lecture will deal in brief with each of these unit operations and the trends we are experiencing for them. A number of slides illustrating equipment

The Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per month. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate. It was estimated that the enlarged plant, together with the mine, would require 750 h-p., as follows: Horse-Power. HAVING been asked to make some remarks after the reading of Mr. Dyrssen's paper, I regret that a test started some months ago has not yet been completed, but some of the things which I can tell you at this time seem interesting and shed a little different light on the idea of a recuperator. The device referred to is becoming more than. a recuperator, largely taking the place of a regenerator. I assume there is familiarity with the sketches that I presented in October, 1926, before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, describing our re-cuperator combination with checker chambers, and I have additional ones to show at this time. The follow-ing remarks will deal with modifications that have been made. At that time I suggested the gases leaving the regenerators at, say, 1400°, be reduced to 500° F. The opinion of the operating men consulted since that time is that, under the best operating conditions, the tem-perature may be 750° to 800° F. after the recuperator and on entering the stack. While the lowest final temperature of the gases en-tering the stack is important from the economic stand-point of fuel burning, and operating in general, it is not the whole story. The method of getting the heat out of the checkers is important. It is believed by many with whom we have talked that a better way is by a combination of checkers and a carborundum re- cuperator of the type described as it will stand all tem-peratures met in practice and might be called a super-refractory.

It is generally recognized that non-metallic inclusions in steel come from two principal sources. First are the chemical reactions in the furnace, or in subsequent deoxidation, resulting in slag which does not free itself from the metal. Much information has been published concerning these chemical reactions and their control through proper attention to slag viscosity, composition of deoxidizers, and other qualities. The studies of this subject by C. H. Herty, Jr. and others through the medium of physical chemistry have yielded much information for the steelmaker. The second source is erosion of ladle refractories, such as lining brick, stoppers, nozzles and runners, causing entrapped particles of globules of fluxed silicate material. In contrast with the large amount of information available on the first source, relatively little has been published on the subject of erosion which, in the case of basic electric melted steel, is the principal source of nonmetallics. This is probably due to the fact that the problem was assumed to be one of simple mechanical erosion, which could be solved primarily by modification of ladle practices. Good improvements have been made by elimination of slurries in the ladle, better ladle and runner refractories, and more attention to pouring temperatures. It is doubtful, however, that this problem has been recognized in its true light since it is not one of simple mechanical erosion but rather one of chemical reaction between the metal and the refractories; and in this sense is as much a problem of physical chemistry as the reactions involved in the actual steelmaking process. The influence of ladle refractories on the resulting cleanness of steels was early recognized by A. McCancel who examined large inclusions in steels made by both acid and basic practices. His chemical analyses showed the large influence exerted by the manganese content of the steel on erosion of the ladle and nozzles used in those days. The presence of MnO in such inclusions led McCance to the hypothesis that both basic and acid steels react chemically with the ladle refractories so that small globules of fluxed refractories are carried in the stream into the molds. This early work of McCance was checked by one of the present authors on basic electric bearing-steel, and it was found that on steels containing as low as 0.40 pct manganese the fluxed surface of the ladle lining after delivering such a heat showed as high as 25 pct MnO by actual analysis. Furthermore, by lowering the manganese content of the steel to 0.20 pct, ladle erosion was decreased with a corresponding decrease in silicate inclusions in the steel. Limitations placed on the manganese content for the required inherent properties made it impossible to pursue this line further, and subsequent attention was concentrated on improved ladle refractories, care in keeping the ladle clean and free from loose refractories up to the time of tapping, and pouring the steel at optimum temperature. Our study of the chemical reactions at the metal-brick interface between steel and ladle refractories was revived in 1939 as a result of an experimental observation made on the cleanness of alloy steels of the SAE types. This observation showed that the relative cleanness of such steels made in basic electric arc furnaces of 12 ton capacity and poured in ingots ranging from 1100 to 2200 lb weight was determined to a large extent by the ratio of the manganese and silicon contents, provided other steelmaking variables such as tapping temperature, pouring temperature, pouring time, amount of aluminum added for grain size control, and degree of deoxidation in the furnace were kept reasonably constant. Detailed studies made on the deoxidation and slag practice during the refining period of basic electric furnace practice showed that these two variables exerted some influence on the resulting cleanness of steel in the form of bars and forgings. The important variable, the manganese-silicon balance, was not apparent until heats were made in succession by the best furnace practice kept under fairly rigid metallurgical control. Another observation pertinent to this work concerned the similarity in the microscope of slag particles causing magnaflux or step-down indications in subsequent rolled bars, and the patches of slag frequently seen on the surface of ingots. These patches are generally believed to come from the glassy metal-brick interface in the ladle and represent an entrapment of such glass (both from the ladle brick and nozzle) in the metal as it flows over the refractories in the neighborhood of the nozzle. These glassy particles are carried down into the mold with the liquid steel, and gradually coalesce into a slag "button" which floats on the surface of the steel as it rises in the molds. Periodically the button is washed to the side of the ingot where it is trapped between the surface of the ingot and the mold, later appearing as a slag patch on the surface of the ingot after stripping. Even though most of the small glassy particles coalesce into a slag button while the ingot is being poured, it is logical to suspect this step in the steelmaking process as being a source of slag lines large enough to cause trouble

The experiments herein described were undertaken with a view to investigating thoroughly the influence of carbon on the tensile and impact physical properties of carbon steel. The original comprehensive plan included investigation of a series of steels with varying carbon contents over a wide range of heat treatments. These were to be studied as to their static tensile qualities, and also their resistance to shock as measured by the Charpy impact bending test. A thorough metallographic examination was likewise included in the schedule. The Charpy tests and the metallographic examination have not been completed to date, and are accordingly withheld for another report. All heat treatments, however, have been made, and the static tensile tests have been completed. A description of the procedure of the experiment and the results thus far obtained are therefore reported herein. Conclusions No attempt is made to draw general conclusions from these experiments, but the curves and the data are submitted as being of general importance and wide applicability. Composition of Materials An attempt was made to secure steels increasing in carbon by increments of 0.1 per cent. from 0.1 per cent. up to 0.8 per cent., and from that composition to 1.6 per cent. by increments of 0.2 per cent. Actually, however, steels of the composition given in Table I were procured, and as the carbon contents were arranged sufficiently well so that satisfactory curves could be drawn showing the relation between carbon content and other properties, these steels were used in the experiments.

The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous. The performance of a two-horizon depletion-type reservoir produced through combination wells is analyzed. By introducing some simplifying approximations, it has been possible to obtain formulas which are easy to handle. Only ordinary differential equations are used, and the development of the analysis can be followed without difficulty by the non-specialist. A rigorous analysis has been made of this problem. It has been found that the approximations introduced in the simplified analysis are fully justified and that errors seldom will be more than 2 per cent. The report shows the effect of the rate of withdrawal upon the relative depletion of the two horizons. Numerical examples are given. INTRODUCTION In its simplest form an oil reservoir consists of a continuous, homogeneous body of porous and permeable rock, enclosed at the top and the bottom by impermeable material. The flow of fluid through such a reservoir has been the subject of numerous papers, and the mathematical analysis of well performance, pressure build-up, etc., has reached a high degree of refinement. One of the basic assump tions introduced into these analyses is the homogeneity of the reservoir. In non-homogeneous reservoirs, these computations still can be carried out satisfactorily, provided small irregularities in the physical properties of the rock are distributed in a random fashion. The flow equations are derived as solutions of the continuity equation, and their solutions are dependent upon the assumption of many constant factors in the reservoir: permeability to oil, compressibility of the reservoir fluid, viscosity saturation, etc. When these axe assumed to be constant, the continuity equation can be solved rigorously. When these assumptions do not hold and corrections are introduced, it becomes very difficult and often impossible to solve analytically. The present analysis is concerned with production from a two-layer depletion-type reservoir in which the layers have different permeabilities. Instead of using the continuity equation, results were derived from some simple physical ideas. In a single-layer reservoir in which the oil is at a pressure above the bubble point, the rate of production often has been assumed to be directly proportional to the pressure drawdown. In the simplified analysis it has also been assumed that the drop in average reservoir pressure is directly proportional with the cumulative withdrawal. These considerations in the past have been the basis of the analysis of reservoir performance and have been applied to a variety of problems, often with marked success. In the problem under investigation these relationships are shown to be compatible with the equation of continuity, but the approach has the advantage of leading to ordinary differential equations in which changes in constants can be introduced without making the analytical solution impossible. It has the additional advantage that it can be understood more readily by the large group of engineers who are not reservoir specialists. For that reason, detailed steps in the mathematical developments have been shown in full. SCOPE OF ANALYSIS The analysis in this paper has been applied to a two-layer depletion-type reservoir in which both horizons are produced simultaneously in the same well. Because of the difference in permeability, it is obvious that the depletion of the two zones will proceed at different rates. Iv all new movements unavoidable misapprehensions arise, which should be cleared away, lest they retard the progress of the movement itself. An impression has gone abroad that the movement for conservation of resources is a new movement. No one knows better than the engineer that this is not the case. Men like Douglas and Raymond and John Fritz and Edison and McDonald, and hosts of others, have preached and practiced conservation as applied to mineral resources throughout a long and useful life-time; and, in general, the work of the engineer and the chemist, both in this and in other countries, has been along the line of continually greater efficiency in the use of all available materials. And the results already accomplished through the efforts of these experts are now saving annually many millions of dollars to the people of the United States in materials and labor. It is true, however, that the need for conservation, that is, for a wiser and more efficient use of the natural resources, has taken on a new life, and is being brought home to the people of the United States in a manner which is awakening public interest and even the public conscience. It is, therefore, both appropriate and fortunate that the engineers, the chemists, and the thinking men of all classes are availing themselves of the present impetus to the movement to emphasize anew the lessons which heretofore they have found it more difficult to impress upon the American public or even upon the captains of industry.
