THE great Swedish export iron ore mines are Kiruna and Malmberget in the north above the Arctic circle and Grängesberg in Central Sweden, see Figs. 1 to 3. These mines exported in 1951 about 13 million metric tons of high grade iron ore and concentrates. The origin of these three ore fields seems to be the same. They are of pre-Cambrian age and are regarded as typical instances of primary eruptive ore that has thrust up as glowing masses of lava flow between two somewhat older beds of porphyry. Apparently the ore and the porphyry became segre. gated from common parent magmas by a process of differentiation. Despite the fact that the Kiruna orebody belongs to the earliest pre-Cambrian formation, it has been influenced to an unusually small extent by later metamorphosisms, apart from its having been set on edge through folding and wrenching off by a number of later faults. The Kiruna ore occurs along a stretch of more than 4 miles as a series of slabs or lenses sloping steeply toward the east and sandwiched between two beds of porphyry. The main orebody has a length of about 3 miles and an average width of 300 ft with a maximum of 600 ft. The dip varies from 65" to 45" toward the east and the known depth is 3000 ft, although magnetic surveys indicate it may be at least 6000 ft. Malmberget has undergone a more thorough transformation, having been pressed and crumpled into a meandering band of disconnected layers and lenses. The largest of the more connected bodies of ore, the Great Ore Layer, outcrops on a low mountain ridge and has a total length of about 4 miles and a maximum width of about 300 ft. A radioisotope tracer method combined with a suitable back-calculation method is proposed and evaluated for the determination of model simulation parameters in open-circuit continuous ball mills. The method essentially consists of using impulse and/or step injections of short-lived radioisotopes of the naturally occurring trace elements manganese and sodium. It is evaluated here on the basis of the minimum standard deviations of the product weight-size distributions. These minimum standard deviations are taken as those predicted by a Poisson distribution of the number of particles present in size fractions of the samples taken for analysis. Previously developed tanks-in-series lumped parameter models are used in the evaluation. The results indicate that the method is very promising.

The iron-nickel alloys, therefore, have been investigated exten-sively regarding both their structures and their properties. The researches on these alloys up to 1938 have been collected and critically reviewed by J. S. Marsh,1 and will be discussed in some detail in the sec-tions of this paper dealing with specific subjects. These numerous investigations have not succeeded in establishing the equilibrium conditions in this system. Alloys containing more than a certain amount of nickel (8 to10 per cent Ni) undergo the allotropic transformation extremely sluggishly, both on heating and cooling, showing a large hysteresis,2 which is not dependent upon

The absolute viscosity coefficients and activation energies for viscous flow of bismuth, lead, and zinc are reported. The viscosities were measured in an oscillating cup viscosimeter from nearly 1000°C to within 1 deg of the melting point of zinc; 2 deg of the melting point of lead; and in the supercooled condition of bismuth, 9 deg below the melting point. Two methods of relating the change in the viscosity coeflicient with temperature were compared. From the plot of the logarithm of viscosity (77) as a function of reciprocal absolute temperature (1/T), the equations of the lines which fit the data are: AS a part of the Reactor Fuels and Materials Research program at Mound Laboratory, precise measurements of the physical properties of liquid metals are of interest because the desirability for a low vapor pressure liquid coolant in high-temperature nuclear power plants has focused attention on the properties of the liquid metals.' Also, a clearer understanding of the liquid metal state can be achieved when better measurements are available. For these reasons, the viscosity values of certain liquid metals have been determined. The viscosities of the liquid metals, bismuth, lead, and zinc are measured in an oscillating cup viscosi-meter. In this apparatus the liquid is sealed in a right-circular cylindrical cup which is attached to a torsion fiber so that the system forms a torsion pendulum. The damping effect of the molten metal upon the normal oscillations of the torsion pendulum is a function of the viscosity of the liquid. This method is advantageous because of the small amount of sample required (8 to 10 cc), the ease of remote operation of the apparatus in a vacuum system, and the containment of the liquid metal in a hermetically sealed, nonreactive, tantalum crucible. With the liquid metal sealed in the crucible, loss of liquid by vaporization and chemical reactions with atmospheric gases are prevented. Additionally, an absolute viscosity determination is obtained which avoids the sources of possible error in a relative measurement. The difficulties in a relative method include the repetitious cup calibrations, and the uncertainty inherent in the practice of calibration of the apparatus at room temperature and extrapolation to the high temperatures necessary for the investigation of most liquid metals. The oscillating cup viscosimeter was first described by Meyer in 1891.2 The first complete mathematical treatment offering an absolute measurement of viscosity with this type of apparatus was proposed by Andrade and chiong3 in 1936 for an oscillating sphere filled with a liquid. This solution was modified to include a right circular cylinder by Hopkins and Toye4 in 1950, and R. Roscoe5 in 1958. Roscoe's treatment for the calculation of the viscosity of a liquid at a particular temperature from the logarithmic decrement and period of oscillation of the torsion pendulum was used in this investigation. A detailed description of the method of calculating the viscosity from these measurements has been reported earlier.' This calculation has been programmed for the IBM 704 and IBM 1620 computers for expedition of the otherwise laborious calculations. APPARATUS The cutaway view of the apparatus in Fig. 1 shows the suspension system within the high vacuum enclosure. AN understanding of mineralizing solutions and how they carry and deposit metals is of prime importance to students of ore deposits. Lindgren states: "The whole problem surely is very complicated. One difficulty is that we know so little about the stability field of ore minerals."1 Lindgren further states: It is believed that they [the solutions] were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in large part they were composed of hydrogen sulphide, alkaline sulphides and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of the double sulphides as important constituents of the solutions probably holds good. In the fourth edition of Mineral Deposits2 Lindgren had changed his views somewhat: From the work of Day, Allen, Shepard, and others, it would seem probable that many of the volcanic gases are acid when given off but are in unstable equilibrium, and could not have preserved this acid character after having been long in contact with the surrounding rocks. It is believed that they were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in larger part they were composed of hydrogen sulphides, alkaline sulphide, and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of double alkaline sulphides as important constituents of the solution probably holds good. The writer wonders if progress would not result from an attack on the problem in steps, the steps to contribute to the attack on the whole. The initial step would deal with the simpler bodies of supposed magmatic (hydrothermal) origin, that is, those composed essentially of silicates, oxides, sulfates, and sulfides. The following discussion attempts to develop one step of a method that was proposed on a more comprehensive scale in 1929 by the writer and W. S. Burbank.3 The accompanying partial table (Table I) of the electromotive series is from a table distributed by Merck & Co. Inc., manufacturing chemists, prepared in turn from Fundamental Chemistry.& The electromotive arrangement brings together elements that in hypogene ore deposits occur: 1) in oxygen combination only; 2) in combination with sulfur as well as with oxygen; and 3) as sulfides, arsenides etc., and as native metals, see Table 11. The writer clearly recognizes that he is not qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, but he feel that some of the relations that are met by the geologist can well be stated with the hope that the chemical explanation will be forthcoming. By consideration of a group including mainly the elements oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur and iron, complications are avoided, especially with elements of the lower electromotive group. The results can only contribute to the solution of the problem, not to the completion of it. The pH and Eh of the solutions and also temperature probably determine what minerals form. The mineral groups that contain elements high in the electromotive series are alumino-silicates, titanites, simple silicates, spinels, oxides, carbonates and sulfates, in all of which the elements are combined with oxygen. These groups are also recognized as the general order of temperature at which the minerals start to form, see Table 11. At low temperature are sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, sulfo-salts, and native metals, in all of which the elements are characteristically not combined with oxygen. The intermediate temperature group contains elements that form both oxygen compounds and sulfur compounds.

Chemists, physicists and others, whose occupations necessitate the use of fine scales, have heretofore regretted their inability to obtain any which would remain uniformly accurate. The difference between the theoretical and the actual results obtained in the ordinary balance (provided the pivot-distances are exact) is mainly due to the frictional resistance between the knifeedges and their bearings. This frictional resistance, although reduced to a minimum in the finest scales when new, constantly increases, thereby decreasing the sensitiveness proportionately. When examined under the microscope, neither the surface of the knife-edge nor that of' its hearings ever appears perfectly smooth. Soft kunife-edges are easily blunted, whereas hard ones are brittle and liable to crumble under the effects of over-load or shock. Prof. Frederick A. Roeder for many years attempted to discover some means by ,which the knife-edge could be replaced with some device free from the above-mentioned objections. His experiments convinced him that a torsion-joint was best suited for that purpose. After he had communicated his conclusion to me, we jointly developed the system to its present form. A torsion-wire had been used for the centre of rotation, prior to Prof. Roeder's invention, but it was found impossible to replace the terminal knife-edges with torsion-joints.

The phase behavior of a number of binary systems consisting of parafin hydro-carbons has been determined in recent years. In addition, the composition of the coexisting phases of mixtures of crude oil and natural gas has been investigated.~ However, the latter study did not include information concerning the influence of the concentration of a component upon its distribution between two coexisting phases. Owing to the paucity of such information it was considered desirable to investigate in some detail the composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system throughout the greater part of the two-phase region at a tempera-ture of 100°F. Information of this nature also permits the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Method The compositions of the coexisting phases in this ternary system at 100°F. were deter-mined by withdrawing samples from a pres-sure vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of the three components that had been brought 10 equilibrium by mechanical agitation at the desired pressure and tem-perature. The samples were withdrawn under such conditions that the equilibrium was not disturbed and the composition of each of the phases was ascertained by means of the conventional low-temperature fractionation procedure. The apparatus employed in this investi-gation was nearly the same as that utilized in an earlier study of the methane-pentane system.~ Several minor modifica-tions in the arrangement of the apparatus were made in the interest of simplifying the procedure and avoiding the possibility of condensation in the tubing connecting the equilibrium apparatus with the analyti-cal equipment. The pressures were meas-ured by means of a pressure balance with a precision of 0.5 lb. per sq. in. It is believed that the equilibrium pressure was ascer-tained with an uncertainty of not more than 2 lb. per sq. in., even though small varia-tions in pressure obtained during the withdrawal of the samples. The tempera-ture of the equilibrium equipment was maintained by use of an automatically controlled oil bath. The bath temperature was determined by means of a copper-constantan thermocouple, the electromo-tive force being determined by means of a potentiometric circuit of such a nature as to reduce the uncertainty of the tempera ture to less than O.I f. The fractionating column employed in the determination of the composition of the gas phase had a diameter of 0.12 in. and was approximately 4 ft. long, while the column employed in the analysis of the liquid phase was 0.18 in. in diameter and about 5 ft. long. Each column was equipped with the conventional constant-volume receivers, which were maintained at a constant temperature by means of an automatically controlled oil bath. Surface tension and its temperature dependence have been determined for pure liquid Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, and Sn and for Fe-C, Co-C, and Ni-C alloys. The temperature coefficient of surface tension is negative for all these liquids. The surface tension and wetting behavior of tin and tin-titanium alloys on A120,, Si,N,, MoSi,, and Sic, as well as the behavior of titanium-containing nickel alloys on A1 20, have been determined over a wide temperature range. For all the solids investigated titanium additims markedly lower the contact angle. Some limits for the solid-surface energies have been calculated from liquid surface tension and wetting behavior. SURFACE tension and interface energy are important variables in a number of metallurgical and ceramic phenomena, and have been discussed at some length in connection with determining micro-structure of polyphase systems,' solid-state sintering,' thermal etching of grain boundaries, heats of solution and fine powders,'1 grain-growth phenomena,' the mechanical behavior of fine foils and fibers, nucleation, soldering and brazing,' and other phenomenz of academic or practical interest However, until recently few quantitative data have been available for high-temperature systems. Among available data are some indicating positive temperature coefficients for the surface tension of liquid copper,*,11,'2 cast iron,l3 and iron-carbon14 alloys. Although carbon was found to be not surface active in iron at 1570" some preliminary studies had indicated the possibility of a positive temperature coefficient for the eutectic composition at lower temperatures.16 One part of the present study has been largely concerned with determining the temperature coefficient of surface tension for several metals at elevated temperatures, In addition to surface-tension studies, the wetting behavior of alloys containing titanium has been investigated over a wide temperature range. Previous measurements indicated that titanium was selectively adsorbed from nickel at a liquid nickel-solid alumina interface,17 and the use of titanium hydride or titanium-alloy techniques for metal-ceramic soldering is well known. In the present study, previous data have been extended to new alloy systems, and measurements have been carried out with other oxidation-resistant ceramics. EXPERIMENTAL The sessile-drop method was employed to measure liquid surface tension and contact angle between liquid and solid, utilizing apparatus and techniques which have been described previously.'g The shape of a sessile drop depends on equilibrium between forces of surface tension tending to form a spherical surface of minimum area and forces of gravity tending to flatten the drop. Typical sessile drops are shown in Fig. 1. From precise measurements of maximum drop diameter and drop height the surface tension and drop volume were calculated. Four solid materials were employed as supporting plaques for the liquid-metal drops. Aluminum oxide (99.9 pct, J, T. Baker, reagent grade) was pressed and sintered at 1800°C. Molybdenum-disilicide powder (99.0 pct, Electro Metallurgical Co.) was pressed and sintered at 1650°C. Plaques were cut from silicon carbide (99.4 pct, hot-pressed at Alfred University) and silicon nitride (95.1 pct, with Al, Fe, 0 as major impurities, Norton Co.) rods. All plaques were polished, cleaned, and dried prior to use. A number of metals and alloys were employed. Chemical analyses of vacuum-melted ingots of iron, nickel, cobalt (National Research Corp.), commercial nickel-base alloys, electrolytic copper (International Smelting and Refining Co.), and tin (Mal-linckrodt Chemical Works) are given in Table I. Alloys were prepared in the laboratory by vacuum melting the base metal with either titanium hydride (Metal Hydrides, Xnc.) or spectroscopic-grade carbon (National Carbon Corp.). Nickel-titanium alloys contained between 0.001 and 0.005 pct oxygen and the ferromagnetic metal-carbon alloys contained 0.001 pct. Cylindrical metal specimens (1 to 2.5 g) were machined and bevelled at the bottom to insure a uniform advancing contact angle on melting. Before use the samples were acid-etched, cleaned with acetone, and rinsed in petrol ether.

The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

The diffusion rate in Ag-Sb couples is sensitive to con~pressive load with the width of Ag3Sb, the only phase present in the diffusion zone, increasing with stress up to 800 psi and remaining constant above this. Kirkendall marker experiments show silver to diffuse much faster than antimony in Ag3Sb and incipient porosity may therefore develop at the Ag/Ag3Sb interfnce restricting the transfer of atoms from the silver into the diflusion zone. Application of compressive stress reduces the tendency for porosity to develop and so increases the growth rate. In a recent paper Brown et al.1 observed a significant increase in the thickness of Cu2Te in Cu-Te diffusion couples on application of a compressive stress as low as 20 psi. Similar stress effects have also been observed in the Fe-A1,2 Al-u,3 arid cu-sb4,5 systems. It has been suggested that the increase in growth rates of intermetallic phases in these systems is due to a decrease in the amount of Kirkendall porosity with applied stress. In the present paper, results are presented of the effect of compressive stress on diffusion in Ag-Sb, together with a detailed examination of the Kirkendall effect. The Ag-Sb phase diagram6 shows that antimony has a moderate degree of solid solubility in silver, 5.7 at. pct at 350°C, but that there is essentially no solubility of silver in antimony. There are two intermediate phases— (hcp7) from 8.8 to 15.7 at. pct Sb and Ag3Sb (orthorhombic8) from 21.8 to 25.9 at. pct Sb. EXPERIMENTAL Diffusion couples were prepared from fine silver of 99.95 pct purity and from antimony of 99.7 pct purity. Both the silver and antimony were produced in the form of discs 1/2 in. in diam by approximately $ in. thick, with surfaces ground flat to 3/0 emery paper. Diffusion anneals were carried out in the apparatus previously described.1 A compressive load was applied to the diffusion couple through a lever arm system, with a reproducibility estimated to be ±10 psi. All runs were carried out in a protective hydrogen atmosphere. Following the diffusion anneal specimens were sectioned and polished and the width of the diffusion zone was measured metallographically. Composition profiles were measured using an electrostatically focused electron probe with a spot size of 10 , counting on Sb L radiation. Corrections for matrix absorptiori and fluorescent enhancement9 were not required. S. K. IMD RESULTS Fig. 1 shows an electron probe traverse of a typical diffusion zone. In all couples examined only one intermediate phase was observed and the composition of this phase, 23 wt pct Sb, was in good agreement with the composition of Ag3Sb, 23 to 28 wt pct Sb. The presence of this phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction of filings taken from the diffusion zone. The probe traverses showed no detectable solid solubility in either the silver or the antimony although the phase diagram indicates that some antimony, up to 6.5 wt pct pct Sb, should be in solid solution in the silver. However the width of this portion of the diffusion zone would be expected to be very small in view of the low diffusion coefficient in the silver, 4 x 10-l6 sq cm per sec at 350°C, 10 compared with that in the Ag,Sb, estimated as 3 x 10-8 sq cm per sec in the present work, and this region would therefore not be expected to be seen in the probe traverse. Application of stress resulted in a significant increase in the width of the diffusion zone, Fig. 2. At 350°C, the thickness of Ag3Sb increased from 250 at 0 psi to 400 p at the limiting stress of 800 psi, indicating an apparent 150 pct increase in the diffusion coefficient. Similar behavior was also observed at 400°C, indicating that the stress effect is not characteristic of just one temperature. The growth of Ag3Sb at 350°C and at various stresses is shown in Fig. 3. In every case the growth rate was parabolic indicating diffusion control. The kinetic curves all passed through the origin showing that delayed nucleation of Ag3Sb was not responsible for the stress effect and that it was a real growth effect. Surface subsidence of two longwall panels, one with a private residence and the other with an arch bridge, was monitored over a period of 1 to 1' ½ years. Surface subsidence data were analyzed in terms of zone of advance influence and delay angle of maximum subsidence velocity. The variational characteristics of both features coincide with the periodic weighting at the advancing longwall face. Surface heaving in the subsidence process can also be attributed to periodic weighting. It was found that residential damages occurred when subsidence velocity exceeded 4.5 mm/day (0.15 ft/day). The effects of locating structures on the panel center and near the gob edges are illustrated. The effect of mining on ground water was also discussed. Finally, methods of reducing structural damages are recommended.

If interfacial equilibrium is maintained at the interface between a growing precipitate and the supersaturated matrix, so that solute diffusion alone determines the growth rate, the precipitate shape should evolve toward that characteristic of the dendrites found in solidification. However, this shape is rarely observed in precipitation reactions proceeding at high temperatures where interfacial equilibrium is usually felt to prevail. Thus some other stabilizing factor must enter, to keep the interface smooth. It is shown that a slow interfacial reaction (low interfacial mobility) will stabilize the interface, while transformation stresses have a IN studying the kinetics of phase transformations such as solidification or proeutectoid precipitation at high temperatures, it is customary to assume that equilibrium exists across the interface and that the rate of the reaction is determined by the rate at which heat and solute diffuse to and from the interface. In the case of precipitation, such an assumption predicts an almost infinite rate of initial growth. It is generally stated that the rate cannot be infinite and that during some initial period the rate must be determined not by solute diffusion but by an interfacial reaction, i.e., transferring atoms across the interface. The duration of this much weaker stabilizing eFfect and impurities tend to enhance instability. It is also concluded that a sets an upper limit on the wavelength of the perturbation that can give instability. Thus initially all flat or smoothly curved particle interfaces will be stable even if their growth is diffusion-controlled. Proeutectoid precipitation in the Fe-C system is considered in some detail and it is shown that the experimental results can only be rationalized if the growth rate of ferrite in steel transformations is determined by a slow interfacial reaction for all hut a few orientations between the two phases. initial period has never been clearly established, but it is generally assumed to be too short to affect any measurable results.' Several authors have pointed out that in the case of interfacial equilibrium any bump in the surface will grow out ahead of the planar interface due to the higher gradient in front of it.2j3 Thus the interface will be unstable with respect to an irregular interface with points (plates) propagating rapidly out ahead of the interface into the supersaturated phase. Recently, Mullins and Sekerka have given equations for the stabilizing effect of surface tenion.~ They found that for particles with a radius of curvature of 1 p or greater the stabilizing effect of surface tension will be completely overcome by a supercooling, or supersaturation, of as little as

In discussion of Mr. Macdonald's paper, I can say little more thau to add t~ the general acknowledgments of iguorae, and like several of the gentlemen who have preceded me, make one of those confessions which are thought to be good for the soul. Having had some experience in the erection of bridges during past years, I am aware that We yet need much information in order to proportion them to the best advantage. I would more especially like to emphasize three of the points mentioned by Mr. Macdonald, as among those upon which we lack knowledge; these are: first, the behavior of steel; second, the proportions of compression members; and, third, the influence of the size of a bar upon its strength per square inch. First, as to steel. While we all acknowledge this as the material of the future, our position map be said to be still one of expectaucy. Feu? engineers are bold enough to employ it largely in bridges, and those who do, find such serious difficulties in obtaining uniform grades of it, are so puzzled by apparent anomalies and unexpected phenomena, that it requires considerable faith and courage to apply it in large structural masses. The fact has long been known, that the temperature at which steel is made and cast bears a very important relation to the molecular condition of the cast ingot. But until quite recently this fact has not received the consideration which its importance seems to justify. That the ingots from a very " hot " blow in the Bessemer converter, for instance, would not roll as well as those made at a lower temperature, was observed very early in the development of the process; but the further investigation of the effects of varying temperature from "hot" to "cold," has not been carried out with that degree of fulness which has been accorded to the effects on the rolling of the chemical elements, and other conditions in the manufacture. In the following pages will be presented the results of an investigation of this subject, undertaken with the view of determining how far the influence of temperature extends, through how great a range its effects can be traced, and what temperature in the making and casting will give the best results in the rolling of the ingots. In the series of observations forming the basis for the conclusions arrived at, while it was not possible to get the full chemical analysis of every heat considered, a complete record of each, in other details, was made, and a large number of these were averaged together to

The Fritz Engineering Laboratory was built under the direction of John Fritz, and presented by him to the University. A view of the building, looking east, is shown in Fig. 1. The building was started in 1909, and completed in 1910, although all of the equipment was not placed until later. Mr. Fritz gave his personal attention to the details of construction and equipment, and it was his custom to drive over every day to the University from his home in Bethlehem and spend some hours watching the work, offering suggestions, making changes, and planning new work. The result is a building and an equipment which embody his practical ideas. The laboratory structure is of the steel mill-building type, of light-colored brick, 91 by 114 ft., of which a section is shown in Fig. 2 and the floor-plan in Fig. 3. The steel frame carries the roof and traveling crane-way. Ample light has been provided by numerous windows in the side and end walls, in the clerestory, and by a skylight 84 ft. long and 9 ft. wide in the north roof. The main aisle of the building is 49 ft. 2 in. between centers of crane-columns, and has a clear height of 40 ft. The remainder of the width is taken up by two side aisles, 18 ft. high. The laboratory consists of four sections: (1) A general testing-section containing the testing-machinery, a small machine shop, and an office; (2) a cement-testing room; (3) a room for making and storing concrete test-specimens; (4) a hydraulic section.

*Original Pages Missing From Book HANNA COAL CO., Division of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., operates three large under- ground mines in eastern Ohio. The section of Pitts- burgh No. 8 coal seam in which these mines are located varies in thickness from 52 to 64 in. It is immediately overlain by a stratum of shaly material 12 to 15 in. thick locally known as draw slate, which is structurally very weak and which disintegrates rapidly upon exposure to atmosphere. Immediately above the draw slate as it is normally found is a band of extremely high ash material 6 to 12 in. thick known as roof coal or rooster coal, and above this is a stratum of conglomerate material varying from 4 to 10 ft in depth. Overlying the conglomerate is' a relatively thick stratum of limestone, the first stable material above the Pittsburgh coal seam in eastern Ohio. With the method of full-seam mining that has been adopted, draw slate is shot down, loaded with the coal, and removed in the preparation plants. The roof coal then becomes the permanent roof. The major problem in mining the No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is control of the roof. Since the strata above the draw slate contains no material with a structure firm enough to provide self-support, the roof begins to sag in a relatively short time after the coal and draw slate have been removed. The problem thus becomes one of getting temporary safety posts under this roof as quickly as possible to prevent a break or separation from occurring either in the roof coal or in the conglomerate above it.
