Until recently, probably the best means of sampling airborne dusts has been the impinger method. Dust-laden air is drawn into a sampling tube, and the particulate matters separated from the air and collected in the liquid in the impinger. A sample of the suspension is prepared on a slide and counted through a projection microscope. This method is simple and reliable, but it does suffer drawbacks. Since the collected particles must be counted visually, results of the dust count are not immediately available at the time the sample is taken. This seriously impedes studying the effectiveness of dust inhibitors, such as water sprays, or making adjustments in equipment. Greatest disadvantage of all, however, is the tedious task of counting particles in the sample. With the growing desirability of taking more samples, the effort involved in making these counts is a real factor in the cost of dust control. Finally, it is generally recognized that impinger dust counts can be related to health hazard only for specific kinds of dust and under similar conditions. This is because the rather complex mechanism of dust damage depends so much on size distribution of the dust. Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used successfully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines. General Description Briefly, sublevel stoping consists of, first, driving sublevel drifts at predetermined vertical intervals through the length of the stope block; second, breaking an initial mining slot across the stope; third, driving crosscut benches from each sublevel by slabbing into the slot; and, fourth, breaking the ground between benches. Applicability Since this is an open stope method, it requires wall rock that will stand over reasonable stope lengths without caving or excessive slabbing. Ore must be moderately firm but need not be hard. The method is best adapted to steep dipping, tabular or lenticular ore bodies but may be applied to ore bodies of almost any shape if their vertical extent is appreciable. It can be used with dips that are too flat for successful shrinkage stopes and can be modified for use with slushers on dips below about 40". Initial mining at the Copper Canyon operation consisted of sublevel stopes for the wider ore sections and shrinkage stopes for the narrow sections where ore widths averaged about 15 ft. After some experience and a study of comparative results on completed stope blocks, sublevels were substituted for shrinkage stopes even in the narrow ore widths. Practical stope lengths depend upon the character of the walls and the continuity of values within the ore body. Where blocks of low grade or waste are included in the stoping limits, these areas can readily be left as pillars for intermediate wall support and longer stope lengths may be planned. Raises can be spotted in narrow or low grade areas and stope lengths adjusted accordingly. Stoping Details To illustrate stoping details, assume that we have an ore shoot 15 to 30 ft wide and about 200 ft long, with walls that would stand over a stope length of 80 to 90 ft (Fig1). PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT Preliminary development for sublevel stoping would be simple. During the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging, The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary ab- normal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. I, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. 'The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.' Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period of approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. Mercury-filled risers were used for the introduction of samples in order that the System could be degassed thoroughly in

THE session* on Non-ferrous Metallurgy held Monday morning was conducted in a most satisfactory manner with F. F. Colcord, vice-president, U. S. Smelting Co., in the chair. In spite of the early hour and the fact that members desired to register first, the meeting started quite promptly, with almost every chair in the room occupied. About 65 men were present and during the morning many more came but, not being able to find room, drifted away to other fields of activity. The first paper presented, "Lead Refining Practice of the Bunker Hill Smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co.," by Alfred F. Beasley (T. P. 303), was read in abstract by Edward H. Robie, and an animated discussion followed in which Messrs. Johnson (written discussion), Brewer and Jones and Professor Hayward participated. The discussion hinged principally on the liquation of the zinc crusts, but Professor Hayward called attention to the fact that the practice of keeping the gold and silver crusts separate was not new and the present scheme illustrated the axiom that processes based on fundamental principles should not be considered as extinct; one can never tell when it may be found advantageous to make use of them again.

THE origin of so-called annealing or recrystalli-zation twins in face-centered-cubic metals continues to be a matter for speculation, and in the present report an attempt is made to explain their origin and to account for at least a majority of the observations concerning their behavior. The fact that annealing twins are prominent only The speelmen was deformed 8 pet in compression and then indented over the lower left-hand corner in a Rockwell in-denter, and then annealed to cause partial recrystallization. Note intense twinning in heavily deformed part and slight twinning in less deformed part. The upper right-hand corner is unrecrystalized. Area reduced approximately 25 pot for reproduction. after recrystallization suggests that deformation may be necessary for their formation. In 1926, Mathewson1 reported the observation by Phillips that annealing twins are frequently parallel to strain markings which delineate octahedral planes in the deformed (and partially recrystallized) matrix, and suggested that strain markings are mechanical twins which grow into annealing twins during recrystallization. Later work by Burke and Barrett' has shown that strain markings are traces of planes upon which slip has occurred, and that there is no evidence for the formation of mechanical twins of microscopically resolvable width in face-centered-cubic metals. Mathewson3 has pointed out, however, that slip may produce twin faults, and later modifications of this hypothesis have assumed that twin faults rather than true mechanical twins serve as the nuclei for annealing twins. Carpenter and Tamura5 suggested, also in 1926, that annealing twins might form by accidents of growth. Christopher R. Corning was one of the ablest mining engineers and geologists in America and one whose name was well known also in Mexico, Cuba, South America and many European countries. He was educated at Zurich, Switzerland, and at the Bergakademie, Freiberg, where he was graduated in 1883 with the degrees of Markscheider and Bergingenieur. He continued his studies at Heidelberg until 1886, chiefly in chemistry, under Bunsen, and mineralogy and petrography under Rosenbusch. Although he received a Ph.D. in chemistry, he never used the title. During holidays of 1883-86, he traveled, seeing mines and studying geology in Spain, France, England, Italy, Germany, and Austria. In 1886, he returned to America and in 1887 he was in the Lake Superior iron ore country on the staff of John F. Stevens, then building the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway. In 1889, Mr. Corning was at the Bunker Hill & Sullivan mines at Wardner, Idaho, with John Hays Hammond, and there met E. E. Olcott. Although Mr. Corning was not long connected with the Bunker Hill & Sullivan mines, he left the imprint of his ability and splendid personality upon the men and the property. That his friendship was cherished was manifested by the cordiality, hospitality and frequency of letters of good counsel and cheer. In 1897, Mr. Corning, with E. E. Olcott and Prof. Robert Peele of Columbia University, formed the firm of Olcott, Corning & Peele, consulting mining engineers. Pressure of university duties compelled Professor Peele to withdraw in 1904, and later Mr. Olcott was forced to retire by reason of other important business interests, but the friendship and high mutual regard of the three men continued undiminished. About 1902, Mr. Corning and Professor Peele translated into English Riemer's book on "Shaft Sinking under Difficult Conditions." Mr. Corning's knowledge of structural geology, mineralogy and ore deposits was extensive and accurate. He was a close and intelligent observer. When he became interested in a problem, no amount of trouble was too great in endeavoring to reach a satisfactory solution. He had professional experience in the West, notably in the Coeur d'Alenes, Mexico and South America, and several times was called on to attempt to straighten up mismanaged properties. In 1912, at the request of a large number of members, Mr. Corning headed the "Committee of FiveJ' that investigated the affairs of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and brought about beneficial changes in the organization and its policies. THE application of the integrated intensity X-ray diffraction method to the measurement of retained austenite concentrations in hardened steels has been fully described.'-' In developing this particular method, the assumption was made that the samples used would have flat surfaces which were free from voids and in which austenite was homogeneously distributed. The original calculation procedure' was modified to include the constant factor G which relates the intensity of a given diffraction line to the concentration of the component giving rise to that line. In order to include A (0) in the constant factor G, it was further assumed that the geometrical conditions relating the X-ray beam, camera cylinder, and sample surface were precisely met.V has been demonstrated that these geometrical conditions can be met experimentally without difficulty in many cases;' however, for those samples which have irregular surfaces or where it is impossible to locate the sample in the proper position with respect to the X-ray beam and film cylinder, it is desirable to evaluate experimentally what effect these nonideal conditions have on the reliability of the austenite determination. This note decribes the results of such experiments. SAE 1095 bar stock was used throughout and all samples were heat-treated as follows: 1600°F for 1 hr in a neutral atmosphere, brine quench, and 300°F temper for 30 min. To control heat-treatment conditions as closely as possible, all samples were plated with 0.002 in. copper to protect the immediate surface from the heat-treating atmosphere. After heat treating, the samples were deplated electroly-tically so that only the copper was removed. The heat-treated surfaces thus obtained were nearly as bright and polished as the original surfaces before copper plating although no mechanical work was done on the samples after heat treating.

The U.S. Minerals Attaché Program, similar to the scientific and technical attache programs of other industrialized nations, is designed specifically to keep surveillance on significant worldwide developments in minerals, metals, and fuels. Knowledge of international minerals developments is essential for both domestic planning and conduct of foreign affairs. CONTROLLED BY DEPT. OF STATE Ten minerals specialists-eight minerals attaches and two petroleum attachés-man this far-flung, worldwide program for the U.S. Government as best they can. Minerals attach& also handle oil, in posts lacking petroleum attaché. The legislative authority for the Minerals Attaché Program is the Foreign Service Act of 1946 and succeeding amendments and Presidential Executive Orders. Therefore, this program is controlled by the Department of State. Interior (representing the Bureau of Mines) and State collaborate in policy formation and direction by means of a "memorandum of agreement" which covers establishment of posts, selection of officers, contents of reports, and supplemental training. State also has about half a dozen nonspecialist officers to complement the work of the minerals and petroleum attaché. It is not the intention here to evaluate the administrative arrangements of this program but rather to describe it and to provide examples of the important job it is doing.

That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,12'3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ores4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. Advantages are that a direct value for the amount of calcium adsorbed is obtained, and introduction of a collector which may affect the adsorption is avoided. The difficulty is to determine the extremely small differences in the calcium concentrations before and after the abstraction. The second method was to determine the activation of the quartz by observing the contact angle obtained on pressing an air bubble against the polished surface of a piece of quartz immersed in a solution of calcium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and sodium oleate. This is the well-known "contact angle" method. The third method was to determine those conditions under which an air bubble will pick up quartz particles immersed in a solution of the desired reagents. Disadvantages common to the sec- ond and third methods are that introduction of a collector is necessary to obtain bubble contact with the mineral; very small quantities of contaminant can give erroneous results; and no information is obtainable concerning the amount of calcium adsorbed. Advantages are that tedious analyses, which at best give approximate results, are avoided, and the conditions, especially for the third method, closely simulate those of actual flotation. Although the most consistent results were obtained with the third method, this paper describes the techniques used and the results obtained from each of the three methods. Distilled water and analytical grade reagents were used throughout except where otherwise stated. Between tests all glass articles were cleaned with a chromic-sulphuric acid mixture and sodium hydroxide. Abstraction Method The raw material for the tests was Ottawa sand sized between 14 and 28 mesh. Batches of 500 g of this sand were dry ground for 1 hr in an Abbe porcelain mill with 2700 g of quartz pebbles. The batches were split down to samples weighing approximately 30 g, and the weight of each sample was adjusted to exactly this value.

Although the noble building provided in New York City by Mr. Carnegie for the United Engineering Society has been pushed to about half-completion, the ceremony of laying its corner-stone was not performed until Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1906. The stone lies just back of the southeast corner of the building, on the north side-of West 39th Street. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie, Miss Whitfield, the sister of Mrs. Carnegie, Ralph W. Pope, Secretary of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Frederick R. Hutton, Secretary of the. Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Charles H. Haswell, the first Chief Engineer of the United States Navy (1836-1851), now in his ninety-seventh year, John Fritz, of the Bethlehem Steel Company, William H. Fletcher, President of the Engineers' Club, E. E. Olcott, President of United Engineering Society, and other interested friends. After an inspection of the interior of the building, the group formed about the corner-stone, which had been draped with the American flag. The exercises were opened by Mr. Olcott, who appropriately welcomed Mr. Carnegie, and briefly expressed the essential value of the building, saying, in part " The societies to be housed underneath this roof have as their aim the pre¬serving and putting in tangible form of the records of scientific accomplishments so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes. The possibility of finding the records of these results all at one center, so near the great Public Library of our city, will be an inestimable advantage to all professions. It is an occasion of no ordinary moment, therefore, when we can welcome Mr. Carnegie and have him lay for us the corner-stone of this great building which his liberality has provided." Mr. Carnegie responded in happy vein, thanking the committee for their greeting, and expressing his pleasure. in being able to do what he had done to further so worthy a cause. Nine intermetallic compounds were tested in tension at various temperatures. Seven exhibited extensive plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. Correlations of tensile strength and elongation are attempted with melting (decomposition) temperature, valence electron configurations of the component elements, heat of formation, crystal structure, density, and volume decrease accompanying compound formation. A LTHOUGH intermetallic compounds have been -tX known for many years, the study of their mechanical properties, particularly in tension, is just beginning. The problem has been unattractive because of the well-known, erratic behavior of brittle materials tested in tension. The strong influence of surface or internal flaws as stress raisers in non-ductile materials and the effect of eccentricity of loading in superimposing bending stresses on the state of tension in the specimen are extremely difficult to mitigate and impossible to completely eliminate. Thus, tensile properties determined for brittle materials, such as intermetallic compounds at temperatures low in comparison to their melting points, are at best only general guides to the values to be expected in an ideal test of a perfect specimen of the material. It is, nevertheless, surprising that apparently no attempt was made to follow up the pioneer work of Tammann and Dahl1 in this field. Working with crude apparatus, these investigators succeeded in showing unequivocally that at temperatures sufficiently close to their melting points (from 75" to 400°C for the compounds tested) intermetallic compounds did exhibit plasticity. This was indicated by the appearance of slip lines on the surface of the specimen. No observations of strength were made in these tests, which were of a compressive or indentation type. Rossi2 in 1932 attempted to study the physical and mechanical properties of single crystals of a group of intermetallic compounds. However, he was able to prepare only one material, Cu2Z8,, in the form of large, defect-free, single crystals. Thus, he was able to report only the relative fragility of the compounds at room temperature. He reported one compound, Ag,Zn,, to be somewhat plastic at room temperature and Cu,Si to be friable, the latter in agreement with results reported herein. Although test results are available only in classified literature, it has also been announced that MoSi, possesses some ductility at elevated temperatures." In 1948 and 1949 Savitskii and Savitskii and Baron -ublished their work on the hot extrusion of Mg-Zn, Al-Mg, and Cu-Zn compounds. Under the favorable state of stress existing for this process MgZn, MgZn,, MgZn,, ß (Al-Mg), ? (Al-Mg) and 0 (Cu-Zn) could be reduced by amounts up to 90 pct at elevated temperatures. These authors also report that hardnesses of Mg-Zn compounds decrease from room temperature values of about 300 kg per sq mm to 30 to 50 kg per sq mm at 325°C. They found that alloys consisting solely of one Mg-Zn compound were most resistant to softening on heating, mixtures of a compound and eutectic less resistant, and mixtures of two compounds least resistant. The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

THE material presented in this paper is an abstract of a thesis submitted by the writer to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part requirement for the degree of Master of Science. The investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. H. 0. Hofman, and it was conducted, under his direction, in the laboratories of the Mining Department of the Institute. The purpose of the work was, first, to study some of the reactions that have been considered as a part of the mechanism of the chloridizing roast, and second, to study the conditions under which nickel oxide and copper oxide may be chloridized. While the production of chlorine gas by various reactions during the chloridizing roast may not be primarily useful in the chloridation of metal oxides and compounds, it nevertheless serves a useful purpose in preventing the dissociation and decomposition of chlorides once they have been formed; for example, the dissociation of cupric chloride into cuprous chloride and chlorine. Therefore it was thought that a study of some chlorine-producing reactions would prove of interest, and the first series of experiments dealt with this phase of the subject. The object of the latter part of the work was to show the possibility of treating heavy sulphide ores, such as those of Sudbury, Ontario, containing much iron and small amounts of copper and nickel, by chloridizing and removing the copper, leaving an iron-nickel oxide product suitable for smelting in the blast furnace for nickel-bearing pig iron. The chloridizing of the copper would, of course, be preceded by a roast for the removal of sulphur, the sulphur oxides being available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, if under the local conditions this product would be of commercial value.

INTRODUCTION The time period from the detailed feasibility study to the post investment audity usually ranges from three to eight years depending upon the nature of the mining project considered. It is the only after the post investment audit that we know the adequacy of the assumptions made concerning operational risk assessment in the detailed feasibility or acquisition economics. The post investment audit results from numerous mining projects can best be described by a verse by John Greenleaf Whittier's Maaud Muller. It reads "For all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these 'It might have been!"' Dissecting the negative results of numerous mining projects we find faulty assumptions concerning markets, geology, capital investment and operational risk assessment. Although in hindsight many of these assumptions could have been considered impossible or impracticle to have forecast with any degree of certainty, we find that refined assumptions concerning operational risk assessment could have been made with only a modicum of additional "Due Diligence". Anyone who invests in a mining property should employ a much higher discount rate of future cash flow, (usually in the minimum range of 25%-30%), than he would expect from such safe investments as Treasury Bills or high grade Utility Bonds. The nature of this steep discount translates to a large uncertainty concerning the timing and actualization of assumptions contained in the detailed feasibility study. We must remember that when a project gets beyond 20 years, any contribution to the value of the project of cash flow is minimal due to the nature of the discounting process. Thus for each full or partial day lost in the development or early operation stage of a project, the financial impact will be greater than similar lost days later on in the project. Adequate operational risk assissment is particularly critical when bidding on competitive tenders for coal deposists in remote locations such as the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia. Because of the market attractiveness of these coal deposits for supplying end users in the Far East, Middle East and Europe, state governments require competitive tender biddings via the Authority to Prospect process. Front end bonuses and super royalty payments must be commited before the actual mining conditions are known. Time to submit firm offers from the actual request for proposal vary from 90 to 120 days. Thus any operational risk assessment must be detailed, realistic and reflective of the actual project. When one searches the literature, one finds limited qualitative data on operational risk assessment in valuation papers. Usually this facet of valuation takes a secondary role to such areas as reserves, markets, and environmental considerations. When one comes to the question of operational risk assessment more often than not one finds the use of "rules-of-thumb", such as tons per man shift, average production, average seam height, etc., are used to forecast results on which banks and other financial institutions are required to make investment decisions. Because of the extremely competitive environment of the 1970's and 1980's numerous financial institutions approved loans without adequate "Due Diligence", and are currently paying a steep price in terms of non performing loans and charge offs. ABOUT three miles west of Fontana San Bernardino County, California, and fifty miles east of Los Angeles, the Kaiser Co., Inc., has built an integrated steel plant. By integrated, I mean that from its wholly owned iron ore and coal supply, the Kaiser Co. is producing in its own mills iron and steel products. Pig iron to meet the West Coast needs has been produced at Fontana since Jan. 1, 1943; steel ingots were first poured there May 14, 1943; and steel plate for ships was first rolled Aug. 15, just sixteen months after ground was broken. A summary of the reservoir engineering and related geologic data on the Schuler field, Union County, Arkansas, is presented here in a manner intended to interest both technical and nontechnical readers. The Cotton Valley formation and the Reynolds oolite are oil-productive formations in the Schuler field, but the Jones sand pool, at a depth of 7500 ft., developed with 146 wells on zo-acre spacing, is the reservoir of principal interest. The Jones sand sandstone reservoir is an anticlinal trap typically gas-drive or depletion type in performance. The core analyses from 88 per cent of the wells drilled, together with drilling time and electric-log data, yield an accurate estimate of the "productive" sand thickness and its areal distribution over the pool. Accurate production statistics, monthly reservoir-pressure surveys, and bottom-hole sample analyses when correlated by the "material-balance equation" show unusually good agreement with that principle. Estimates of oil initially in place made by the material-balance method and the sand-volume method are in good agreement at 116 to rzo million barrels. The reservoir-pressure history of the pool reflects the reaction of a reservoir to production, proration and secondary-recovery practices. The cost of the extensive program of reservoir study in the Jones sand pool has been estimated, in order to emphasize the value derived from such an investment through better understanding of a reservoir's reaction to production practices. Unit operation of 140 of the 146 Jones sand wells made possible an effective unitized gas-injection pressure-maintenance program. Res-ervoir-pressure decline was arrested, natural flow was maintained, and pumping and lease equipment were conserved. An increased ultimate recovery of zo million barrels beyond the estimated 34 million barrels primary recovery is indicated at present. Extension of the Jones sand unit to include the undeveloped Cotton Valley formation will permit additional recovery of otherwise uneconomic reserves of oil through wells no longer required in the Jones sand operations.
