INTRODUCTION Surface mining and in situ leaching of uranium have the potential to alter ground-water quality around mines and leach sites. Of particular concern is the fate of uranium and its associated trace elements: molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium. We wish to under- stand the natural processes that control trace element concentrations in ground water and how these processes will influence dispersion of the elements from a mineralized zone, both naturally and during and after mining or restoration. For example, it is commonly recognized that the trace elements are soluble in oxidizing ground water but are insoluble, and can be precipitated, in reducing ground water. Thus oxidizing, metal-bearing water leaving a deposit could re- enter reduced ground, causing the water to be re- reduced and the trace elements to be, reprecipitated. In a sense, this is recreating the original mineralization process. To accomplish the above goals, we have (1) examined the theoretical controls of concentrations based on the available geochemical and thermodynamic data, (2) determined the major ion composition and oxidation-reduction status of Oakville waters because of the influence of these factors on trace element solubility, and (3) determined trace element concentrations and distribution in Oakville ground water. The last approach is used to evaluate how well actual behavior follows predicted behavior. This report focuses on two elements, uranium and molybdenum, because they exemplify the results obtained. The report also is restricted to a regional study of Oakville ground water. Results of more de- tailed study in and around major uranium districts in the Oakville and much of the raw data that support the conclusions in this report are presented in Galloway, Henry and Smith (1980). This report is part of that larger study, which concerned the depositional systems, hydrology, and geochemistry of the Oakville. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study, under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Theoretical controls were determined by reviewing the available literature on aqueous chemistry and behavior of uranium and molybdenum. To aid in under- standing water chemistry, Oakville water analyses were run through a modified version of the computer model WATEQF (Plumer, Jones, and Truesdell, 1976). WATEQF calculates speciation of dissolved ions and determines saturation with respect to a variety of minerals. In the discussion below, ion activity products (IAP) are compared with the equilibrium constant (KT) for various reactions and mineral products. Values of log IAP/KT near zero indicate that the water is in equilibrium with a mineral. Values less than -1 indicate considerable undersaturation and values greater than +1 indicate oversaturation. Galloway, Henry, and Smith (1980) give a more complete discussion of the application of this approach to Oakville water chemistry. Eh-pH diagrams have been constructed or adapted from the literature to predict what form -- dissolved ion or stable mineral species -- uranium and molybdenum assume under various conditions. Construction of the diagrams has followed procedures described by Garrels and Christ (1965). This approach is particularly appropriate because the solubility of the elements is Eh-dependent, and Eh varies greatly within the Oakville aquifer. A number of assumptions or approximations are inherent in the use of Eh-pH diagrams and chemical models such as WATEQF and in the interpretation of water chemistry in general. Both Eh-pH diagrams and chemical modeling rely entirely upon available thermo- dynamic data, including free energies of formation and dissociation constants for various reactions. These values are known to varying degrees of accuracy. Most major ions and minerals are relatively well control- led; however, data for trace metals are much poorer. Thermodynamic data are not available for some minerals, and for other minerals, two or more divergent values exist. By necessity, we have relied on the judgment of others to evaluate thermodynamic data. Calculations by WATEQF and constructions of Eh-pH diagrams are based on an assumption of equi1ibrium. Equilibrium may not be comnon in low-temperature aqueous environments; at best, ground-water composi tion may be in a state of dynamic equilibrium, continuously changing due to changes in environmental conditions. Eh-pH diagrams show what phases are stable at equilibrium under given conditions; they do not prove that the phases actually exist. Many minerals persist or form metastably under conditions outside their equilibrium stability field. The kinetics of reactions, which cannot be evaluated here, are important in determining what phases occur. Kinetics may be less of a problem for ground water that travels and evolves slowly through a semihomogeneous matrix than for many other natural systems. Eh-pH diagrams show equilibrium fields only of phases included. They do not indicate anything about stability relative to phases not included in the diagram. WATEQF, obviously, cannot calculate the degree of saturation of a mineral not included in the program or for which the appropriate ions were not analyzed. Thus, a mineral that was not considered may be the most stable phase under a given set of conditions and may control the solubility of a trace element. Mineral Industries education as an entity, again and again has sought recognition, always to be turned aside or ignored.1 The incident mentioned in Lost Chapter was only the first of a series of disappointments. The Land-Grant Act is camouflaged here and there in the name of progressive education. A new interpretation may be in the best interests of society in so far as the goose is not killed that lays the golden egg. The primary objective of the act is still "agriculture and mechanic arts" but mechanic arts is not alone mechanical arts or engineering. Mechanic arts was used in a broad sense as a symbol of creative effort in locating and winning the fundamentals of existence - plants, animals, and minerals - from Mother Earth, their primary processing and treatment into foodstuffs and raw materials of industry, their manufacture into useful articles of commerce, and, last, their distribution and utilization. Significantly the great agricultural industry is now at least half mechanic arts. The Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities has neglected the mineral kingdom shamefully. The Association embraces Divisions of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics, and Veterinary Medicine but has no division relating to the mineral industries.

Over the years since 1956 when initial experiments were conducted on underground concreting in an attempt to cope with the ground weight and pressure encountered in the development of a large-scale underground block caving system, the use of monolithic concrete linings has grown to include most of the primary development in the mining area. Although the development cost of concrete linings is higher than either timber or steel-supported openings, the repair and maintenance costs are substantially lower, making concrete the most economical means of ground support. Other ad- vantages are also apparent, in that concrete provides superior fireproofing, better ventilation, and a safer, cleaner working place.

PALLADIUM has been used for jewelry for many years, particularly in conjunction with gold. This use increased in amount during the war, as palladium and gold were only moderately used for war purposes while demands for platinum and some of the other members of the platinum group were so great that their use in jewelry was prohibited. Palladium hardened with a small percentage of ruthenium has the necessary technical properties and appearance for good jewelry, and it is sufficiently rare to be desirable for luxury items-at least 100 times as rare as gold. Although both visual and spectrophotometric examination demonstrated that the color of palladium was almost the same as that of platinum, a few jewelers found the surface of palladium, even after some polishing, rather dark in areas that had been repeatedly heated during the soldering necessary to assemble certain types of handmade ornaments. This phenomenon is not to be confused with the thin, bluish oxide film that can be produced by heating in air over the range 400° to 800°C., as that film is easily reduced by dipping in warm 5 per cent formic acid or in warm methanol. It was suspected that the difficulty arose from heating in atmospheres that were alternately oxidizing and reducing, as Wise and Vines1 had found that this opened the grain boundaries of palladium and palladium-silver alloys in the same manner as in pure silver, as reported by Martin and Parker.2 This damage is caused by the reaction between oxygen in solid solution in the metal, acquired when heated under oxidizing conditions, and hydrogen diffusing in from subsequent heating under reducing conditions; the steam cannot diffuse out and therefore builds up sufficient pressure to disrupt the metal near the surface. Copper and various other metals can be damaged similarly, but platinum is nearly immune; therefore the problem was new to the platinum jeweler. Sulphur in the fuel gas also can cause trouble but did not appear to be dominant in the present instance. Metallographic examination of both pure palladium and ruthenium-palladium showed that the usual torch using oxygen and city gas as normally operated did in fact cause the surface and subsurface damage that had been observed, and also disclosed that a reducing flame caused more damage than an oxidizing flame and was very damaging even in the absence of any intentional swing in atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing (Fig. 7); besides the surface damage, there was serious loss of ductility. A full explanation of the mechanism of attack is not evident at the moment, but may be allied to the attack that occurs on heating catalytically active metals in nonequilibrium atmospheres.

During 1937 a program was begun to mechanize and modernize the then 28-year old Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co., which is on the Monongahela River, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at one edge of what is generally known as the Coke Region. Weirton Coal Co. is a subsidiary of the National Steel Corporation, and produces metallurgical grade coking coal for the Weirton Steel Co., Weirton, W. Va. Improvements subsequently made included a cleaning plant for washing the entire mine output, shovel-action track-mounted machines for mechanically loading all the coal, universal-type track-mounted cutting and shearing machines, post drills, 8-wheel mine cars of 10 tons capacity, cable-reel gathering locomotives and other auxiliary equipment. This paper presents the factors, reasons and results of decided changes from the mining system generally prevailing in the region, as well as abandonment of selective mining practices in favor of complete seam extraction. Coal-seam Conditions Fig. 1 illustrates the Pittsburgh coal seam on the property. Cover over the seam averages 450 ft., and 675 ft. is the maxi- mum. Main roof varies from very weak to medium strong; usually it disintegrates rapidly on exposure to air. The "wild" coal makes a fairly strong immediate roof if supported by crossbars and if unbroken affords a seal to the main roof. The draw slate is very weak and treacherous. The floor is characterized by numerous irregular bottom rolls, or "horsebacks," protruding from a few inches up to 3 ft. into the coal. Some are soft, but many are hard and flintlike. Although the bottom slate usually is hard, the underlying fire clay causes it to buckle and heave readily with any moderate increase in roof pressure or where damp. As a whole, the bottom is weaker than the main roof. The coal is characterized by numerous closely jointed face and butt cleats and a woody, springy nature when shot, both having a decided influence on face practices. As shown in Fig. I, at both the top and bottom of the main coal seam is a layer of coal of higher ash and sulphur content than the body of coal in the middle. Factors That Influence the Mining System Equipment was bought and organization for mechanical loading was made on the basis of working each mechanical unit as near its full capacity as possible, to lessen investment cost and obtain best operating efficiency. This led to combination double and triple-shift operation at the start, and, very shortly, to all sections being triple shifted.

The remarkable strides which have been made in recent years in the art of petroleum refining are not fully apparent until we attempt to compare the scientific status of the industry today with the basic conditions existing a decade or so ago. The spotlight has played so strongly on the development of cracking that many of the wonderful steps brought about in other departments have crept upon us unawares. A number of causes have contributed to this highly accelerated rate of progress. Constant effort by both companies and individuals to obtain the honors and prizes rewarding new discoveries has played its usual important part in our industry as in others. Competition has applied its continuous pressure on the refiner to reduce costs and losses and increase the proportionate yields of the higher-valued fractions. Advances in the engineering professions and growth in chemistry and allied sciences have contributed much. But there are other factors which deserve particular mention. The rapid development of the internal combustion engine, with the rigorous quality requirements and large quantity consumption of both fuel and lubricants has been a tremendous influence in adding impetus to natural progress. The teaching of petroleum principles and practices in many of our best universities and technical schools, and the calling into the industry of ever greater numbers of scientifically trained men to supplement the efforts of the practically trained operators, as well as to apply at close hand the fundamentals of science as a life work, has had and is having an incalculable influence. Important Improvements Let us consider briefly some of the most important improvements: First, distillation, which constitutes the greatest single phase of refinery operations, even with cracking excluded; that phase of distillation being handled as an individual subject in this symposium. Today we are distilling crude oil and redistilling by-products at a rate very much faster than was possible with the lesser knowledge of the art which we possessed

At this Symposium on Gold which is sponsored by The Metallurgical Society of AIME and the International Precious Metals Institute many distinguished authors will present the latest developments in the metallurgy of gold and in operating practices at mines and in refineries. It seems appropriate then, as the introduction to this volume to recall some of the history of gold and the metallurgical developments which have been accomplished, especially during the past 100 years and some of the people who have contributed so much to the metallurgy of gold. Of all the elements gold has been the most sought after since the earliest times. Perhaps the quotation from Virgil's Aeneid best describes man's desire for gold but Pliny the Elder also put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D. that "Gold is the first of man's follies, silver the second". This quest for gold has markedly influenced man's history and through the efforts of the early philosophers and alchemists to turn base metals into gold the foundations for modern chemistry were laid. The pages of history literally teem with references to gold. Gold is the first metal mentioned in the Bible and was the source of Croesus wealth as well as the death of King Midas whose touch turned everything into gold. And of course almost everyone has heard of Jason's Argonauts and the golden fleece. They are the subject of one of the many drawings in Agricola's De Re Metallica published in 1556. The Argonauts were probably prospectors seeking the source of the placers in the region near-the Black Sea. The time was about 1200 B.C. and the placer miners recovered gold by trapping the particles in sheep's fleeces placed in sluices. After drying, the fleeces were shaken to recover the gold. Gold is not hydrophilic, or wetted by water and thus the oils in the wool aided in collecting the particles. Here we have perhaps the earliest reference to surface chemistry and the basis for concentration of gold by flotation.

The Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining CO. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Dore bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter the yard at the plant. There are five storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. the main lead to the storage tracks passes over a 100-ton track scale on entering the yard.

A generalized mathematical model has been developed to describe the kinetics of gas-solid reactions with special attention given to the hydrogen reduction oj dense spheres of hematite. This reduction process must pvoceed through a sequence of transport and chemical .reaction steps acting in series. Under typical experimental conditions, none oj the individual transport and reaction resistances may be neglected in the development of a physically significant model. A linear vate of thickening oj the product layer, usually taken as evidence of interface-controlled .reuction, may be observed even though transport resistances play a dominant role in the over-all kinetics. The temperature and pressure dependencies of all terms have been carefully evaluated in order to .make fill use oj arailable expe-inzental data in evaluation oj the model. FOR obvious technological reasons, the kinetics of reduction of iron oxides has become the subject of intensive experimental and theoretical investigation during recent years. Continuing efforts to construct mathematical models to describe the kinetics of reaction between a gas stream and a granular bed of solid particles have demonstrated the necessity of a thorough understanding of the reaction kinetics of a single particle within the system as a prerequisite to the construction of physically significant models of complex, reacting systems. This paper presents a critical examination of the transport and chemical-reaction processes involved in single-particle oxide reduction and develops the mathematical expressions necessary to evaluate their importance. Comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental results contributes important new understanding of the complex nature of this process. The reduction process has been studied under a wide range of experimental variables, and it is not surprising that apparent conflicts in observation and interpretation appear in the literature. The interested reader is referred to the reviews of Themelis and auvin"? and Manning and philbrook3 for a description of much of this work. The course of reaction commonly has been followed by measuring the oxygen weight loss from the particle as a function of time. A number of authors have suc- cessfully correlated their data in terms of a model which assumes that the reduction process is controlled by the rate of reaction at a single, sharply defined, advancing interface. According to this model, the interface will advance linearly with time. A mathematical model for gaseous reduction in a packed bed developed by the present authors in an earlier paper4 recognized that reduction must proceed through the series hematite (Fe203), magnetite (Fe30,), wiistite (Fe,O), and finally metallic iron. The reduction scheme permitted a stepwise topochemical reduction of the individual particles to metal or to the lowest oxide thermodynamically possible for the local gas composition in the bed. The limiting situations of theoretically dense and very porous oxide structures were considered. On the basis of available experimental evidence, the simplifying assumption was made in each case that all product layers would thicken linearly with time. A generalized single-particle model has now been developed to determine the significance of transport resistances in the product layers and in the gas film surrounding the particle. The analysis shows that the interplay of transport and chemical resistances is such that an apparently linearly advancing interface may be observed despite the fact that the reaction may be under significant transport control. Attention thus far has been focused on the development of a model for the topochemical behavior of dense spheres of hematite in atmospheres capable of reducing them completely to metal. The formation of successive product layers of iron, Fe,O, and Fe304 is assumed to follow the mechanism originally described by dstrijm.' All oxygen removal from the core occurs at the iron/Fe,O interface, intermediate oxide layers being propagated by sol id-state diffusion without change in the oxygen density of the core. Since fractional reduction is operationally defined in terms of oxygen weight loss, the kinetics of the over-all reduction of FeZ03 to iron is properly studied in terms of the gas-solid reaction occurring at the iron-wiistite interface. The fractional reduction of a partially reduced oxide sphere is given by: here refers to the radial position of the iron/Fe,O interface. This model is not universally applicable because, as explained in the earlier paper,4 a consideration of porous particles or of dense particles in atmospheres not capable of reducing wiistite must allow for the possibility of gaseous reduction at interfaces other than the one between iron and Fe,O. However, evidence that certain hematite specimens actually do follow the dense-pellet mechanism developed here is provided by the data of cewan' and of Bogdandy and

The idea of a portable crusher is not new. Many such crushers are available but they are small and designed for construction work. For many years the author has suggested, both in this country and in Europe, the building of larger portable crushers intended expressly for use in quarries or open pits. Although not applicable under all conditions, there are mining operations where a mobile crusher arrangement could be more profitable than the facilities now used. The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less expensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton-miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3, left). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks. Although power consumption for hauling on a grade increases for both conveyances, the rate of power consumption increases faster for trucks than for conveyor belts (Fig. 3, right). Since the output rate and related fixed costs are affected by the travel speed, total haulage costs with trucks would increase with the grade more rapidly than the similar costs of conveyor belts (Fig. 4). Travel distance, road grade, speed, size and number of pieces of equipment, efficiency of operation, and many other factors affect such haulage costs. In general terms it can be said that the shorter the distance, the steeper the grade, and the greater the output, the more advantageous the belt becomes in comparison to truck or track haulage. In addition to potential cost savings in haulage procedures, a portable crusher would allow better utilization and performance of shovels. Loading operations would not be interrupted as often by the necessity of waiting for cars or trucks. Unfortunately, the application of belts in open pits for haulage from bench sites is generally not practical under existing conditions because a belt fed directly by a mechanical shovel can be torn, damaged, or worn out quickly by the large rock fragments falling on it during loading. However, by using a mobile crusher this situation can be avoided. As shown in Fig. 1 (b), the shovel feeds rock into the crusher located behind it. The crushed material is initially transported by an extensible and/or movable belt, thence by a longer stationary conveyor to the plant where the material is subjected to further treatment by secondary crushing, screening, etc. The first-mentioned conveyor, needed to bridge the distance between the shovel and the stationary conveyor, is necessarily variable in length owing to the continuous movement of the shovel and the desire to keep the stationary belt at a safe distance from the bench during blasting operations. The remarkable part of mobile crusher operations is the extra-ordinarily high output per man-shift, the low maintenance and power requirements for haulage, and the increased output of the loading shovel. A cement quarry which has been using a portable crusher and conveyor since 1956 requires only three men to operate the shovel and crusher and to transport the crushed rock by belt from the quarry face to the screening plant. [During the last few years, the necessity for development work has been generally recognized by executives throughout the oil industry, resulting in greatly accelerated progress and the adoption of many noteworthy improvements in refining methods and equipment. Several years ago, the Associated Oil Co. decided to improve distillation methods with the object of reducing refining costs. This extremely interesting work was entrusted to the writer, and W. S. James, now Chief of Research for Studebaker Corpn. of America, was selected as the principal collaborator. The latter contributed much during his two years with the Associated Oil Co., to the development work that has followed. The writer extends to the Associated Oil Co. his appreciation for permission to disclose the details of distilling equipment. In petroleum refining the principal requisites of good economics are the separation of high-priced distillates from those of lower price; maxi-mum yield of any desired distillate; lowest capital investment in refining equipment; lowest cost of operation and maintenance, and the best adaptability and flexibility of the same refinery equipment for handling crudes of widely varying characteristics. The first two items mentioned, separation and yields of distillates are determined by efficiency of fractionating equipment,. Discussion in this paper is chiefly concerned with oil-heating equipment, combustion and furl economy. It has long been well known that velocity plays a very important part in all heat transfer systems. Any betterment in specific transfer. rates in such systems must. always involve velocity. Realizing this fact, IV decided to adopt as a basic principle, the employment of energy to impart velocity required for high transfer rates through a heating diaphragm, and our method of modernizing obsolete shell stills is founded on this principle. Mechanical energy is usually cheap and its rational rspcntliture is returned in the form of greatly increased heat transfer rates, on both oil and gas sides of the sheet. Several investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical properties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires, who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure on tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,² Curry13 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda,67 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350" C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of 6 or fine a + 6, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda studied the eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10" C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400" C. and at 520" C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß' being formed, ß' having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + 6. The economics of mining has traditionally been viewed quite apart from the economics of blast furnace operations. It was realized, of course, that blast furnaces would operate best with good raw materials, but the shipping grade of ore, for example, was decided by a sort of collective bargaining process between the ore producers and the blast furnace operators. The mine operators had to keep their costs down, and were usually successful in convincing management that the ore in any particular deposit was endowed by nature with a certain iron content and that the mine grade could not be raised beyond a certain economic limit. The blast furnace operators would have liked a better grade, but as long as they were able to make a fairly good showing it was more or less accepted that they had to take the ore as it came. The mine operators were able to ship to the nation's blast furnaces thousands of tons of iron ore that would be completely unacceptable by present-day standards. As late as the early 1950's, the major steel companies were witnessing an actual decline in the iron content of their incoming ore supply as the mining companies mined progressively leaner material and upgraded it only enough to pass competitive market requirements

HIGH subsurface temperatures and pressures are making cementing operations more difficult as deeper producing horizons are being sought. Recorded bottom-hole temperatures above 200°F. and pressures in excess of 12,000 Ib. per sq. in., obtained by combining hydrostatic and pump pressures, are not uncommon. Insufficient time is available for proper placement of standard Portland cement, because of the shortened setting time produced by these excessive temperatures and pressures, therefore special types of cements have been developed to overcome these difficulties. From the standpoint of placement, the ideal slurry would be one that would remain fluid long enough to be placed, then harden rapidly, so that there would be a limited amount of contamination and the well could be placed on production in a minimum of time. It is highly desirable, therefore, that some method be devised to measure accurately the time that any slurry will remain in a fluid state while being pumped into the well. To study the effect of elevated temperature and pressure on fluidity, the authors have developed the pressure-type consistometer (Figs. I and 2) described below, and are presenting data obtained with it, using slurries of both quick-setting and slow-setting cements. Studies were made over a temperature range from 110° to 270°F., and a pressure range from atmospheric to 3000 lb. per sq. inch. APPARATUS The fluidity of cement slurries at atmospheric pressure is usually determined with the Halliburton consistometer1 or the Thickening Time Tester.2 These instruments are similar, in many respects, to an ordinary ice-cream freezer. The slurry to be tested is placed in a container that is rotated at a constant speed with an electric motor. Constant temperature is maintained by surrounding the container with a thermostatically controlled bath. The torque on the paddles, which is proportional to the force needed to shear the slurry, is indicated on a scale. The Halliburton instrument is calibrated from 0 to 100 poises against fluids of known viscosity. To permit direct correlation of observed elevated pressure data with those published at atmospheric pressure, the authors' designs of the slurry container, paddle, and torque indicator closely resemble those used on the Halliburton instrument. Duplicate results may be obtained at atmospheric pressure in either instrument. Instead of the atmospheric constant-temperature bath, one was built from a high-pressure steel bull plug. A Uni-Bolt union equipped with a blanking plug serves as the top, permiting the instrument to be opened or closed in less than one minute. The slurry container is built from Shelby steel tubing. This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Transportation facilities are thus excellent. The slate deposits of these three counties are conspicuously unified, both economically and geologically. In general type of marketable

For a study of the bonding that occurs in magnetite pellets during oxidation, cubes of magnetite, hematite, and quartz were prepared, each with one surface polished and nearly optically plane. These faces were fired together under pressure and at various temperatures to determine whether bonding would occur. Sections of surfaces that bonded were examined microscopically. An attempt was made to measure the strength effected by this treatment. EARLIER work1,2 has shown that the strength developed by fired magnetite pellets containing silica or silicates is due to three separate effects. Two of these are associated with the formation of slag in the interior of each pellet at temperatures above 1000°C, where the atmosphere is substantially though temporarily neutral. The third is independent of the silica content and is responsible for the development of a hard shell around the pellet during the initial stages of firing, a condition which permits the pellet to assume the increasing load of the overlying burden and prevents extrusion of the slagged and semi-liquid interior. Pellets made from hematite concentrates do not show these effects unless specific additives are incorporated, and it is these differences in behavior which in large part account for the difficulty in producing satisfactory pellets from such concentrates. Elsewhere it has been stated that "the most important factor responsible for the development of strength in fired magnetite pellets containing no additive is the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent."' The object of the investigation reported in the present paper was to study in detail the mechanism described above and to evaluate its contribution to the strength of the fired pellet compared with other possible mechanisms, excluding slag bonding. This was effected by placing together polished faces of two cubes prepared from specific minerals and then heating them under constant pressure at different temperatures both in air and in nitrogen. The materials used were magnetite, hematite, and quartz. The magnetite was coarsely crystalline material from western Montana, the hematite was Itabira ore from Brazil, and the quartz was of optical grade but of unknown origin. A high-grade Lebanon (Pennsylvania) magnetite concentrate was used to prepare briquets for the investigation of bonding strength. Analyses of the iron oxide materials are given in Table I. The specimens for furnace treatment were prepared with a carborundum cut-off wheel, which cut the minerals into cubes approximating % in. along each edge. Care was taken to make the sides as parallel as possible. The edges of the faces to be polished were beveled, and the cubes were mounted in brass rings with sealing wax, this being essential to prevent the specimens from rocking during polishing. To prevent excessive friction, the wax was recessed so that only the brass ring and the face of each specimen would be in contact with the polishing lap. Each specimen was then ground with No. 600 carborundum to produce a level surface before polishing. The Graton-Vanderwilt process was not used for polishing because of the long time required by this method, but several other methods were tried. Cloth laps using levigated alumina or chromium oxide did not produce the desired polish. Satisfactory results were obtained by means of a pitch lap: which was used for all the mineral cubes, with levigated alumina as the polishing medium. The lap was operated in a machine similar to those used in the preparation of single optical surfaces. It was run at low speeds and moderate pressures, and polishing was stopped occasionally to prevent overheating of the lap. A good polish with flat surfaces could be obtained in about 5 min. After polishing the sealing wax was removed either in hot water or in a solvent such as turpentine.

The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is the lifeline of the mine, and therefore the proper selection of equipment will save a lot of time and money during the life of the mine. Various types of mine hoist designs &e available today, and each has their advantages and disadvantages. Double Drum Hoists, Single Drum Hoists, Friction Hoists and various special designs of these are available but should only be used on applications where they are suitable. There have been several new drive systems for mine hoists which have come into the picture in the last ten years, and they in turn must be evaluated along with the existing drive systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanicals, and then have a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. This paper will attempt to cover the above noted systems - both the hoist selection and hoist drive system that will provide the mine with a reliable and economical hoisting system. I. Mine Hoist Types There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Following is a general outline of each type of hoist and the hoisting applications that they are suitable for. First let us consider the simple Single Drum Hoist. As a Service or Production Hoist with cage or skip in balance with a counterweight, a Single Drum Hoist can efficiently service one or more levels since the location of the counterweight at anytime is not important. As a Production Hoist with skips in balance the Single Drum Hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the Single Drum Hoist. This has to be done periodically to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the Single Drum Hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multi-layer winding is necessary the Single Drum Hoist must have a divider to allow a separate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application the counterweight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Figure 2). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are reduced.

This paper summarizes the data on the oil-shale deposits of western Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. It is based on published reports by the U. S. Geological Survey, on the results of core drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, on the drill cuttings from the Genera1 Petroleum well, on a recent unpublished report by the Geological Survey on the geology of Naval Oil-Shale Reserves No. I and No' 21 and from information supplied by geologists of private companies who have investigated the Green River formation. The paper also contains a revised estimate of the grade and tonnage of minable thicknesses of oil shale of western Colorado. Introduction The oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming comprise an important natural resource for the production of synthetic liquid fuels. The oil shale in western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, apparently richer, and probably more persistent than in Utah or Wyoming. Work is now being done by the Bureau of Mines near Rifle, Cola. to ascertain the best procedures for mining the oil shale, producing shale oil from the oil shale, and converting the oil into more salable products. As a part of this program, holes were drilled and cores were taken of the oil shale on Naval Oil-Shale Reserve No. I. In addi- tion, drill cuttings were obtained from a well drilled through the Green River formation by the General Petroleum Co. about 18 miles northerly of the Naval Oil-Shale Reserve. Geology During middle Eocene time a broad, shallow body of water, now called Uinta Lake, covered northwestern Colorado and east-central Utah; a similar lake, known as Gosiute Lake, was in southwestern Wyoming Each of these contemporary lakes was bounded by high hills; the drainage was to the south. The Green River formation was laid down as sediments in the bottoms of these lakes. It is 3000 ft thick and has been divided into the following four members:
