G. M. TAYLOR,* Colorado Springs, Colo.-The ore treated at the United Eastern is primarily a gold one and is cyanided-the counter-current decantation method being employed. One of our employees visited this plant a few months ago and, on his return, reported that the moisture in the tailing was carrying 20 c. per ton, which would appear to be somewhat high. As this type of plant has been advocated by one of the recognized cyaniding engineering firms in the country, and a number of these plants are in successful operation, it does not seem to me that the dissolved loss could be so high, and I would like to know if any one can give any definite information on this point? J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I am very glad that Mr. Taylor has raised this question. When I first read Mr. North's paper and saw his statement, that they had an actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. per ton, I was very much puzzled at this high loss which appeared avoidable by another decantation or the addition of a rotary filter. Reading it again, however, I noted that the actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. given was evi-dently obtained by multiplying the assay of solution discharged from Z. thickener by the tonnage. On the basis of 283 tons milled per clay, this means $56.54 going to the clam. He states, however, that he returns from. the dam into the system, 70 tons daily assaying 40 c. per ton or $28 per day, so it would seem reasonable, unless I have overlooked something to regard the actual dissolved loss as $56.54 less $28 or $28.54, equaling 10.8 c. per ton. Even this loss, however, is much higher than good practice elsewhere, and can be accounted for largely by the tonnage being handled, which I believe is 30 per cent. above the capacity planned.

SCRAP metals to the value of more than a billion and a half dollars were recovered in the United States in 1939 for further use in industry. Few people have any true conception of the magnitude of the secondary-metal industry as related to that engaged in the production of the primary, or virgin, metals; of its importance, particularly when a shortage of primary metals exists, as at present; or of the advance that has been made in standardizing and improving the quality of its products. Of the iron and steel produced in the United States in 1939 (the data used in this article are largely taken from Bureau of Mines reports for that year) just over 50 per cent came from scrap and slightly less than 50 per cent from ore. Of the principal nonferrous metals-aluminum, anti-mony, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc-63 per cent came from domestic ores and 37 per cent from scrap. Fig. 1 presents graphically the relative tonnage and value of primary and secondary production of ferrous and nonferrous metals. In this chart only purchased secondary metals are considered, the figures being exclusive of "home" or "plant" scrap which amounts to rather large figures in the iron and steel industry. Incidentally, the chart shows that from the tonnage standpoint the iron and steel industry is some twenty times larger than the nonferrous industry, though with regard to the value of the product the ratio drops to about two to one.

As cold working is an important feature in a great many of the fabricating processes now applied, this paper presents some ideas of the nature and results of the plastic deformation produced in this operation. The art of manufacturing metal for practical uses is very old and has undergone very great development. The science of metals has also developed very rapidly recently and the various processes to which ,metals are submitted are much better understood now than they were even a short time ago. All the knowledge that can be obtained on this subject is useful because it promotes efficiency in converting metal into finished articles. ATOMIC ARRANGEMENT IN CRYSTALS In the solid state all metals are crystalline. The atoms are arranged in, a definite symmetrical configuration, which is repeated at regular intervals, and thereby defines what we may term a lattice. Presumably . the atoms exist as positive ions. The dissociated electrons place themselves between groups of positive ions, and thus define a second lattice, an "electron lattice." From such a point of view, the crystalline forces which hold a metal together are the electrostatic attractions between positive ions and negative electrons. The particular type of lattice into which a metal crystallizes depends on the number of these lattice electrons given up by each atom, and is thus connected very closely with the chemical valence of the metal.

WHEN one thinks of Minnesota iron ore, one thinks of big open pits, where high- grade ore is simply scooped up with a power shovel, loaded into cars, and hauled away for shipment to the blast furnace. On the western end of the Mesabi range, however, are large tonnages of iron ore which contain too much silica to be used directly in the blast furnace, and these ores must first be concentrated to a purer form. The Mesabi range is about 100 miles long and a maximum of 3 miles wide. The iron formation, which in its unaltered form is called taconite: consists of a banded iron- bearing chert. Where the high-grade ore bodies occur, these have resulted from folding and cracking with sub- sequent leaching out of the silica, leaving the iron oxide behind. The big open pits and the underground mines are situated in these concentrations.

THE difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated mineral-spyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying 1 per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to o.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of 1.0 per cent WO3 is exceptional. Inasmuch as buying specifications demand a 60 per cent WO3 content, the mineral content of the ores as mined must be concentrated to at least that degree. A few companies have constructed chemical plants for the treatment of their complex concentrates and low-grade flotation product, but the smaller operator must rely on table concentration, borrowing the tools and to a large extent the methods of his predecessors in the gold, silver, lead and zinc mills. Whether these are the best tools and methods that can be devised is an open question. Except in rare instances, table concentration, however carefully conducted, does not yield a satisfactory final recovery of the mineral content in headings as indicated by chemical determinations of tungstic oxide content. A saving of 6o to 65 per cent is considered fair, and an average 80 per cent recovery, exceptional. Each scheelite ore body is a separate problem. Details of handling that give best results in one case may not be successfully operative at a property on the same contact zone and but a short distance removed. Supplementary treatment of tailings by flotation may be successful in producing a low-grade concentrate of around 15 per cent W03, which is adapted to further treatment chemically at a given property and entirely unsuccessful at another. This problem constitutes another of the unanswered questions. The following paragraphs relate solely to the beneficiation of scheelite ores by table concentration and supplementary methods.

THE work of a consulting engineer or manager, when controlling mining-operations, requires that he have all the information concerning the mine in as concise a form as possible, and as the ore-reserves and their depletion and enlargement are the vital points to be studied, it is well to have them kept up to date and in some convenient form. The present paper describes a method adopted by me, which shows in a very clear manner the ore-reserves in a mine. The case illustrated is that of a vein near enough to the vertical for the vertical elevation of the mine to be the main working-map. A flat ore-body would be represented on a similar plat, but instead of the horizontal thickness of the vein being shown in the circles, the vertical thickness would be inserted. Fig. 1 represents an ideal longitudinal elevation of a mine, plotted in the ordinary way, using 100-ft. blocks and section-lines. In a mine where the block-numbers are posted by the engineer underground, the system of keeping the ore-tonnages extracted from the different blocks is easily maintained, and the actual tonnages of ore extracted can be kept so that the surveyor can have a check on his estimate from time to time. The ore-reserve sheet, Fig. 2, should be the same size as the map it is to accompany. Each square is used for the description of the ore-reserve in the block it corresponds to on the elevation. Where the section-lines cross the levels a circle is drawn, in which are written the widths of ore at that point, these widths being used in the calculations of each block cornering in the circle. It has been found convenient to show the figures in black in the lower half of the circle when the actual widths of ore are known, and when it is necessary to make up the figures of probable ore, as at the time of making

A new leasl-squares method is Presented for determining lattice parameters of hexagonal or tetragonul structures. The method is adapted for use on electronic computers and involves a reiterative procedure. The correction factor employed raries linearly with the lattice parameter, a (determined from the Brag, angle). In contrast, Cohen's method and recent modifications of it use a correction factor that varies incersely as the squure of the lattice paramneter, a. While the recent modifications attempt to improve the precision of the extrapolated lattice parameter, a, (or-cu). by stressing the importance of the weighting factor. the present approach emphasizes the need for choosing the correct extrapolation function. A comparison between the present method (the Linear method) and Cohen's method indicates that the Linear method may be more appropriale in certain cases. through a priori no critertion appears to he available for making a chorce between the methods. The size of hexagonal and tetragonal crystal lattices is determined by two parameters, a, and c,. Although in principle the two lattice parameters can be determined independently from reflections for which h - k = 0 and 1 = 0, respectively, in practice this may be inconvenient (because of the angular positions at which these reflections may occur) or not easily possible (because of low intensity). Furthermore, if a high precision or accuracy is required, the limited number of reflections of this type available, particularly in the high-angle region, is not sufficient for the necessary corrections (mainly due to absorption) to be determined with accuracy. Several methods1-7,11-13 have been proposed employing all reflections, to obtain the optimum values, a. and co, either by a trial and error procedure or a least-squares fit. Of the latter method, cohen's5 is the best known one since it provides explicit expressions for the optimum a. and c,. However, Cohen's method is only strictly valid if an extrapolation function is used that varies linearly with l/a2 or lie2 (see Section 3), a requirement that does not appear to be generally appreciated. On the other hand, all the better known and more widely used A recent trial and error method was proposed by Massalski and King8,7 who computed extensive auxiliary tables of axial ratios vs the functions A = [(4/3)(h2 + hk +k2) + l2+(a/c)2] and C = A(c/a)2 used in computing a and c values from the observed Bragg angles. These values of a and c were then plotted against a function which permitted linear extrapolation. As a criteria; for the "optimum" values, Massalski and King rely upon a visual fitting of the line through points representing reflections of low 1-index points to compute the extrapolated value of ao and high 1-index reflections to obtain CO. The successive computations and graphical plotting required to reach the "optimum" value are quite lengthy and tedious even on a desk calculator and no quantitative assurance is obtained of having in fact selected the optimum value.* If the method of Massalski and King is used on an electronic computer, then their published tables become redundant and a least-squares fit becomes a natural selection for the choice of optimum values. Such an approach will be called the Linear method. For work now in progress on the effect of certain physical variables on the lattice parameters of hexagonal crystals, it has become essential to determine the confidence limits of small changes in the lattice parameters. Since extrapolation functions that varied linearly with a and c actually also appeared to vary linearly with l/a2 or l/c2 when tested against published as well as our data, a comparison of Cohen's method and the Linear method was considered desirable (Sections 3 and 4). For the latter method an electronic computer was required since a reiterative procedure to obtain the optimum ao and co values had to be employed. A study has been made of the structural changes in polycrystalline high purity aluminum during the tertiary stage of creep under conditions of constant tensile load. It appears that there is no basic modification in the particular mechanism of deformation that characterized the preceding secondary stage of creep, but that the changes in crystalline structure produced during the tertiary stage are only a consequence and not a cause of the accelerated strain. Intercrystalline fissures were observed on entry into the tertiary stage, and these might supplement the accelerated rate of strain owing to local stress concentrations. There is evidence that the formation of these fissures may be associated with the presence of surface imperfections, and it is suggested that a more generalized treatment of the results may explain certain creep characteristics of commercial alloys. IN previous work'-4 a study was made of the changes produced when specimens of annealed aluminum were deformed at various temperatures and rates of strain, especially under conditions leading to creep under constant tensile load. It was shown that, as the temperature was increased or as the rate of strain was decreased, elements of the substructure produced within the grains became coarser, and with the strain rate constant at a given temperature, their size tended to an equilibrium value. The preliminary process of the breaking down of the grains into a substructure was identified with primary creep.' The subsequent equilibrium, condition was associated with secondary creep. The question then arose whether the tertiary stage corresponded to any further significant change in the substructure. The question is also of interest in view of the opinion, expressed for instance by Andrade,5 that the tertiary stage is merely an accelerated rate of strain due to the reduced area of section of a specimen under continuous tensile load, and the other opinion, as suggested by the observation by Sully, Cale, and Willoughby6 of a tertiary stage in com-pressive loading, that this third stage is a real effect in its own right. The object of this paper is to record some observations on the tertiary stage of high purity aluminum. Experimental Procedure The material was aluminum of 99.98 pct purity as previously used. The specimens had a rectangular section of l/8 x l/2 in., and extensions were measured over a 1 in. gage length. After machining to shape, the specimens were annealed to give a standard grain size of 0.2 mm and then electropolished. The general procedure involved metallographic and X-ray diffraction examination at progressive stages of elongation (marked by arrows on the curves shown in Figs. 1 and 2), the specimen being extended to fracture under constant load at a given temperature. The X-ray tests were made by the back-reflection method from a stationary specimen, using CoK radiation. The longer edge of the micrographs in the paper corresponds to the direction of applied stress. Results The previous work showed that, in the secondary stage of creep in aluminum, three basic types of structure could be developed according to the temperature and rate of strain. These were: 1—slip, which predominated at the lower temperatures and higher rates of strain and produced the finest and least perfect substructure; 2—cell structure, which superseded slip as the temperature was raised and the rate of strain decreased and which was characterized by a coarser and more perfect structure and an absence of slip lines; and 3—a stage termed "boundary microflow," which predominated at still higher temperatures and lower rates of strain when the cell size had increased and become comparable

Fifteen and 18 pct Ni maraging steel and several binavy and ternary alloys of the iron-rich corner of the Fe-Co-Ni system have been studied. After annealing in the austenite range, these alloys were deformed slightly by cold rolling and subsequently aged. Compavison of experimental measurements at various processing stages indicates that small degrees of deforn~ation (5 to 10 pct reduction in thickness) do not influence hardness and strength or the aging kinetics. Electrical resistivity and ductility are somewhat redu]ced and the coercive force is substantially lower when compared to identical samples which were not deformed. The results are explained in terms of retained austenite which transforms into martensite with the small amount of deformation. RECENTLY there has been increasing interest in maraging steel for applications in electric power generators requiring a high ratio of power to weight.' Fifteen pct Ni maraging steel has been investigated to evaluate its properties and performance for application as high-strength magnetic rotor steel,' and a thorough investigation of the precipitation and transformation processes in this alloy has been conducted in this laboratory.3 The influence of deformation, which preceded the aging treatment, was also studied. It was found that a small deformation in the order of 5 pct has a rather striking effect in reducing the coercive force. Other interesting effects on the properties caused by such deformation have led to the more detailed studies reported herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used to produce the samples from 15 pct Ni maraging steel have been described elsewhere.3 The general procedure of hot forging and cold rolling to sheet has been followed. The composition is included in Table I which also contains the composition of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel grade 250 studied. More data about the material and the processing of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel have been recently reported.4 The experimental alloys of binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys were made by levitation melting in an argon atmosphere and casting into rod-shaped ingots 7 mm thick weighing 20 g. From these ingots 25-mm-long rods were machined to study the phase transformation by a dilatometer. These rods were then cold-rolled to strips, 2.4 mm thick. Annealing for austenitizing was done in tube furnaces in an argon or helium atmosphere followed by cooling in the water-cooled portion of the tube. Aging was done in a salt bath containing a neutral blend of Alkali nitrates and nitrites. Vickers hardness was measured using a load of 50 kg for 15 sec. Tensile tests were carried out on a hard beam tensile tester at a strain rate of 5 X lo-' per sec using flat samples with a gage length of 37.5 mm and a cross section of 1.25 by 6.25 mm. Estimated sensitivity was 5 K x strain and 0.35 kg per sq mm stress. Magnetic saturation was determined on small cylindrical samples, 2.5 mm in length and diameter, by measuring the force exerted by the gradient of a magnetic field of 1000 oe per cm in a mean field of 11,500 oe. The measured values could be reproduced within *1 pct. Coercive force was measured by a precision-type magnetic field probe in a magnetic coil as described by Foerster.5 The magnetizing field was 1300 oe. The samples were 5 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 2.4 mm thick. he coercive force was measured to within +0.1 oe. Electrical resistivity was measured by using a potentiometer on flat strips with a gage length of 100 mm and a cross section of 2.5 by 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement was 0.1 pct but the reproducibility of the measured specific resistivity among different samples was in the order of 1 pct. The method used to prepare the samples for electron transmission has been reported elsewhere.3 RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the influence of deformation after annealing on the resistivity, hardness, and coercivity. SINCE boyhood I have had a keen interest in mining engineering. To see the prospector with his pack outfit and his pan, followed by the assayer and the trained engineer, has always had -something of the lure of romance for me. It is appropriate that the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers should hold a general meeting in California, since this State has long been a home of mining engineering. Here, after the early open methods of mining, it has been necessary for the universities to train men in geology and mining, so that the earth could be penetrated and the rich ledges opened. In the eighty years in which the mines of California have been offering experience to the miners of the world, we have seen mining engineering evolve from a comparatively simple art, covered largely by rule of thumb, into a complex group of specialties, each utilizing the very latest discoveries in the various fields of physical sciences. Mining, too, has become a great business requiring large financial support and the most careful handling. Those mining engineers who have applied new processes in special fields have thus been able to give a wide-flung range to their activities in all parts of the world. The hand of nature in distributing minerals over the surface of the earth has compelled the mining engineer to become a modern pioneer, facing the heat of the tropics as well as the frozen regions of the north. There has been a marked cosmopolitan aspect to mining engineering, since the engineer had to go wherever the prospector discovered favorable leads. This has meant dealing with the harshest of conditions, the handling of labor of all sorts, the control of sanitary conditions, and relations to all forms of transportation. Naturally this has called on some of the very best minds in all countries to unlock the stores of hidden wealth. To make them available for civilization has been the job of the mining engineer.

NOTWITHSTANDING the metropolitan appearance of M. L. Haider, the present Chairman of the Petroleum Division, he is not a native New Yorker, but was born at Mandan, N. Dak., Oct. 1, 1904. He began his travels at an early stage in life and after attending the University of Southern California for two years he spent two additional years at Stanford University and was graduated in 1927. After a few months as an analytical chemist for the Portland Cement Co. he became research engineer in the natural gasoline department of the Richfield Oil Co. where he remained for approximately two years before taking a position with the Carter Oil Co. in Oklahoma. In considering blasting it is necessary to consider the drilling and explosives since one is generally concerned with the total cost of muck of a certain size in the pit or through the crusher. To get a current idea of the drilling situation in open pit mines plotted in Fig. 1 are the drilling costs per ton of material vs. hole diameter for rotary drill holes in large limestone, iron ore and taconite operations. The exception is the 2-in. diam hole which was drilled with a percussion drill in limestone.

IN spite of the war and the preoccupation of many physical metallurgists with work on secret or confidential problems, definite progress was made during 1944 in our understanding of the behavior of steel and of the effect of alloying elements. During the first two years of the war there was much concern over the possible unavailability of certain alloying elements; this period saw the development of the N.E. (National Emergency) steels. However, the measures taken eased the alloy situation and currently, highly practical problems under study are the graphitization of low-carbon steel and weld-cracking, while investigations of more theoretical interest have concerned hardenability, isothermal reactions, the effect of hydrogen and the interpretation of the notched-bar impact test.

The suggestion has often been made that it would be highly desirable, at least for certain grades of steel, to be able to control more certainly, by pyrometric measurement or otherwise, the temperatures of the operation of the open-hearth and other furnaces used in the manufacture of steel and iron. That the properties of the ingot and finally of the finished steel product are intimately related to the final temperatures attained by the metal in the furnace and to the temperature of casting, has been recognized by metallurgists for a long time, and this question has been very thoroughly treated, especially by Prof. Henry M. Howe, and by A. W. and H. Brearley.1 It is the object of this paper to demonstrate that in so far as casting temperatures of furnaces, steel ingots, and similar operations involving the temperatures of streams of iron and steel are concerned, well-known pyrometric methods may be easily applied—if certain recently determined corrections are made and precautions taken—with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Greater but not insurmountable difficulties will be encountered in the case of open-hearth furnace temperatures, while for those of the converter type a ready solution does not seem practicable. It appears that certain essential data have always been lacking in reporting observations such as those of Le Chatelier in 1892. Thus the correction to be applied for the characteristic radiation—or emissivity— has hitherto not been adequately taken into account nor the limitations of the several possible pyrometric methods clearly recognized. In view of the fact that in open-hearth practice the temperature to be measured in the furnace itself, in the stream of metal and slag and in the teeming into molds or ingots is usually above 1,500" C. (2,700" F.)

Also in the susceptibility-co~centmtion curve, there is n distinct but not sharp maximum at 19.0 * 0.5 z~t pet (40.5--42.1 at. pct), which indicates the presence of the 6 phase. IN December, 1936, several drilling tests were made at the Hubert O. De Beck feldspar mine at Green Mountain, N. C., to determine the most efficient type of hammier-drill bit and drilling method for use at this particular property. This mine is well recognized as having the hardest rock in the Burnsville - Spruce Pine feldspar district and drilling costs always have been high. Local structural deformation has greatly distorted and warped the normal crystalline structure of the feldspar so the rock is much tougher than usual. In studying drilling methods and bit types, available literature was re¬viewed but little specific data could be found on the direct comparison of four-point and six-point drill bits so the following results may be of some interest.

We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:
