The use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem. Two methods for the recovery of chrysocolla have been developed by the United States Bureau of Mines.1,2 They have been successful on a laboratory scale but have been seriously restricted in industrial application by critical requirements in the procedure. In one of the Bureau of Mines methods,' the ore is activated with sodium or hydrogen sulphide in an aqueous solution at a pH of 4. Amy1 xanthate is then used as a collector with pine oil as a frother in the flotation process. An excess of sulphide acts as a depressant and the state of optimum conditions is difficult to control industrially. In the second Bureau of Mines method,2 soap is used as the collector at a pH of between 8 and 9. The diffi- culties with this process are that soap is not a specific collector, that heavy metal or alkaline earth ions cause the formation of insoluble soaps, and that a more acid solution causes the formation of a free acid which does not act as a collector for chrysocolla. The problem of recovering chrysocolla by flotation involves the selection of a suitable collector. The collector molecule must be composed of an active polar group that has an attraction for chrysocolla, and of a hydrocarbon chain. Certain dyes have been shown to have an attraction for certain minerals. Suida3 found that hydrated silicates are colored by basic dyes. Dittler4 showed that chrysocolla, among other colloidal minerals of acid reaction, preferentially takes up such basic dyes as fuchsin B, methylene blue, and methyl green. Endell5 gave information to show that the colloidal material in clay may be determined by its selective adsorption of fuchsin. A simple experiment, likewise, illustrates the difference in the adsorptive power of chrysocolla and of silica for the basic triphenyl methane dyes. When a mixture of chrysocolla and silica is immersed in a very dilute dye solution, less than 5 ppm, the chryso-colla is rapidly dyed and the silica is dyed more slowly. The difference is substantial but one of degree. Dean2 showed that the dyes, crystal violet and toluidine blue, are taken up by quartz in an adsorption type process. The difference in the adsorptive power, however, offers the means by which a new collector may act. To form such a collector, a hydrocarbon chain must be attached to the dye molecule. This involves a process of organic synthesis. Butyl, hexyl, and octyl hydrocarbon chains were selected for substitution in the malachite green molecule. For the purpose of identification, the alkyl-substituted dyes formed are called: butyl-malachite green; hexyl- malachite green; and octyl-malachite green. An outline of the procedure for their synthesis is given in the appendix. It is generally recognized in the preparation of this type of dye that the chemical structure of some of the dye molecules varies. However, a uniform formula is attributed to the dye. Such a procedure has been followed in specifying the structure of these alkyl-substi-tuted malachite green dyes. The structure is given on the basis of their properties as an homologous series of dyes, on their method of preparation, and on the purity of intermediates used. The present work had for its purpose: 1) the identification of crack nucleation sites in AISI 4340, quenched to martensite and tempered over a range of 'temperatures; and 2) the comparison of fatigue processes in AISI 4340 with processes observed previously in pure metals From constant def1ection-bending fatigue tests, martensite boundaries were identified as the favored crack nucleation sites in quenched and tempered AISI 4340. It, also, was concluded that the fatigue processes operating- in this lous-alloy steel were similar to Processes observed in pure tnetals. ALTHOUGH much engineering data has been accumulated on the fatigue properties of quenched and tempered martensitic steels,' fatigue as a process is not as well understood in martensite as it is in pure metals.' Important features of the fatigue process, such as the identity of the nucleation sites, have not been determined in the commercially important high-strength low-alloy structural steels. The present work had for its purpose: 1) the identification of crack nucleation sites in a low-alloy steel, i.e., AISI 4340, which had been quenched to martensite and tempered over a range of temperatures; and 2) the comparison of fatigue processes in the AISI 4340 with processes observed previously in pure metals. This comparison of the fatigue processes in the different tempers was restricted to the high-strain low-cycle part of the S-N curve. Under these test conditions, previous work on a number of metals has shown that a large number of cracks are nucleated in less than 30 pct of the fatigue life.3 Furthermore, crack nucleation sites are not restricted to inclusions but are also associated with intrinsic structural characteristics of the metal. MATERIAL A 20-lb ingot of vacuum-melted AISI 4340 (for composition see Table I) was hot-rolled to 1-in.-diam rod and then cold-rolled to a 1-in.-wide strip, 0.08 in. thick. Fatigue specimens, see insert of Fig. 1, were machined from the strip with the long dimension parallel to the rolling direction. m this orientation, the stringers of 1 to 2 p inclusions present in the sheet lay parallel to the stress axis in the specimens. The specimens were austenitited at 2050°F in order to obtain a large prior austenite grain size, i.e., 2 mm, which facilitated the subsequent identification of the prior austenite boundaries. A helium atmosphere was used to minimize decarburization. After austenitiza-tion at 2050°F, the specimens were transferred to a 1450°F furnace so that specimen distortion was held to a minimum in the subsequent oil quench. Previous work4 indicated that refrigeration in liquid nitrogen prior to tempering reduced the percentage of retained austenite in the quenched specimens to less than 5 pct. Tempering was carried out in air over the temperature interval of 200°to 800°F to produce a range of mechanical properties, Table I. The preparation of the fatigue specimen was completed by grinding about 0.005 in. from each surface and electropolishing in a chrome trioxide-acetic acid solution for 30 min. Examination of etched cross sections of specimens prepared in this fashion showed the foregoing specimen preparation to be adequate for the removal of the decarburized layer present after the heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the as-quenched microstructure of this alloy consisted of a mixture of martensite plates containing either a high density of dislocations or microtwins. Previous work5'6 indicated that in the course of oil quenching autotem-pering resulted in the formation of E carbide on the martensite and microtwin boundaries. Tempering for 2 hr at temperatures up to about 400°F resulted in further precipitation of the E carbide. Finally, at about 400°F, cementite began to replace the E carbide on the martensite and microtwin boundaries in addition to forming a Widmanstatten structure within the plate matrix. EXPERIMENTAL S-N curves were obtained using electropolished specimens cycled at 1800 cpm as cantilever beams in fully reversed bending at selected constant deflections. The deflections were translated into surface strains by means of a calibration curve obtained through the use of strain gages. An argon atmosphere was used to minimize environmental effects. To investigate the development of fatigue slip bands, the specimens of the different tempers were unidirec-tionally bent to a surface strain of 0.005 to 0.007, photographed to record the location and appearance of slip bands so introduced, and then cycled to failure

The removal and disposition of large quantities of slag from blast-furnaces is a question of great importance in the design of works, and various methods have been devised, from time to time, in order to take the best advantage of local conditions. With blast-furnaces treating copper-ores or lead-ores, it is necessary to use a fore-hearth, or matte-settler, in order to collect, if possible, every particle of valuable matte which, otherwise, would be carried away with the out-flowing slag. In all of these cases, the slag overflowing from the fore-hearth is caught in pots and then conveyed to the dump. If the slag is of no value and the necessary water-supply, grade and dumping-space be available, the disposal of the slag by granulation is by far the cheapest and best method. It involves a minimum of labor, both at the furnace and at the dump; and it permits a continuous outflow of slag from the furnace or settling-pot, thereby avoiding frequent tapping and plugging. When the conditions of water-supply, grade and dump-area will not permit slag-granulation, there are three other methods in common use. Large steel or cast-iron pots, or ladles, supported by trunnions on heavy cars which are moved by steam-, air-, or electric locomotives; some type of mechanical conveyor; and small pots or buggies moved by hand. The pots on the slag-cars are generally circular or oval in shape, and each one contains from 15 to 40 or more cu. ft. of molten material. The mechanism for tipping them is more or less elaborate; and, as a general rule, the slag is dumped alongside, and quite close to, the track. They are more or less costly to construct and to keep in repair, and, in order to use them to best advantage, it is necessary to have a good elevation of track above the dumping-ground ; furthermore, the rails must be of heavy weight, and well-supported on heavy ties. During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

SOME eighty years have elapsed since the discovery of the Clifton magnetite deposit. For a few years about the time of the Civil War it was mined for iron ore. most of which was smelted on the property. Since risen the small exposures of ore in the old cut. test pits, and on the dumps have been examined by various prospectors. The M. A. Hanna Co. first became interested in the possibilities of the deposit when we discovered the large area of strong magnetic anomalies caused by the margnetite bed, indicating a size that would support a commercial operation. In 1940 we made a detailed magnetometer survey of the area. and the deposit was diamond-drilled. The main ore lied was found to be 1500 ft. long, to average 60 ft. thick, and to dip southeast at an angle of about 40 deg. The thickness of the bed is irregular in wavy folds both along the strike. and down the dip. Faults occur at both raids of the main deposit.

The object of this paper is to describe briefly the practical results obtained in several problems of civil engineering by resistivity measurements of the underground. It is intended for the mining engineer, as well as for the construction engineer; the stratigraphical problems discussed are general and frequently are encountered in mining exploration. Resistivity measurements have been used in mining and oil exploration for a number of years.' Their introduction in the field of civil engineering, on the contrary, is rather recent. It was applied for the first time in the spring of 1928 near Littleton, N. H., in the survey of two dam sites for the New England Power Assn.2 Since then, the geophysical firm with which the author is connected has had an opportunity to develop this field of activity, and more than 20 investigations at dam and tunnel sites have been carried out in the United States and Canada. A part of this work has been verified by underground or drilling exploration. This paper deals with but a few of the results, which we are permitted to make public now. The theoretical and technical sides of the processes employed will not be discussed; they have already been described in various technical publications. The measured changes in the yield stress of a poly crystalline Ta-O alloy after strain aging at 100°C have been separated into two components; the change inflow stress and the change in dislocation locking parameter. These two components vary independently indicating that at least two separate recovery processes take place during strain-aging. Variations in the locking parameter can be accounted for by segregation of oxygen atoms to dislocations, but variations inflow stress cannot be explained by current theories. STRAIN-AGING in Fe-C and Fe-N alloys has been studied extensively.' The kinetics of the removal of the interstitial solute from solution appear to agree with the predictions of the cottrell-bilby2 model or a variation of it proposed by harper.3 Solute segregates to the dislocations under the influence of the elastic strain field of the dislocation and the rate of depletion of the solute can be measured by following the change in electrical resistivity4 or internal friction.5 On reloading a prestrained specimen, plastic flow starts at Fig. 1, but after aging the reloaded specimen yields discontinuously at a higher stress The aging index reflects the extent to which the yield has returned. Until recently it was usual to assume that ? is a result solely of the pinning of dislocations by the segregated solute atoms, that is, that op and oj coincide and the strain hardening curves AB and CD are continuous. IN a paper on the mechanical behavior of heat-treated steel, N. H. Polakowski' put forward arguments to the effect that the stored energy resulting from the deformation of metals should be reduced during the inital stages of subsequent deformation carried out under conditions which produce work softening. At the time (1957) the only energy measurements available as indirect evidence on this point were the results of M. M. Degtyarev,2 some of which Polakowski reproduced in his Fig. 6, and which are again reproduced here in Fig. 1. The solid lines in the upper part of Fig. 1 are Degtyarev's, the dashed Lines Polakowski's prediction of the true trend of the stored energy in copper samples pre-strained in tension and then given various amounts of subsequent compression. The accuracy of this prediction has been borne out by some experiments carried out on American Smelting and Refining Co. copper (99.999' percent Cu) by the present authors. Bars of this copper about 0.4 in. in diam and 12 in. long were prepared by vacuum melting and casting, followed by cold forging and swaging in several stages of about 40 pct reduction in area with intermediate recrystallization anneals. After the final anneal one bar was deformed in tension to 30 pct elongation; the gage length was then cut into several samples which were given axial compressions of various amounts. The hardness of

THE following results, presented here in condensed form,1 were obtained in a preliminary study of the adsorption of n-hexane thiol, hexyl mercaptan, on sphalerite, zincite, willemite, and quartz, from aqueous solution and from a gas. Interest in this subject was aroused by a Belgian report2 of effective use of hexyl mercaptan for flotation collection of oxidized zinc minerals. The relatively low boiling point, 149°C, of the mercaptan3 suggested the desirability of extending the usual measurements of partition of collector between aqueous solution and gas and between gas and mineral. It is believed that this paper presents the first measurements of this type on a flotation system. Attempts were made to carry out the measurements at equilibrium, but as the work progressed it became increasingly doubtful that this desirable condition had been achieved. To control composition and extent of the gas phase, the apparatus was a wholly-enclosed thermally-controlled glass system. Because of these constraints and the desirability of dealing with pure minerals, a scale of operations was chosen in which a few grams of deslimed mineral were used in each test. It was also necessary to choose a particularly sensitive method for mercaptan analysis, and in fact a method that would permit the experimenters to follow the approach to equilibrium. For these reasons mercaptan marked by radiosulphur 35 was used. An analysis was made for the radiosulphur by a modification of the method of Gaudin and Carr.4

(communication tb the Secretary*):—Mr. Wright, in his introductory paragraph, says: "It is commonly believed by metallurgists that in copper-smelting, the copper in the slags, which is irreducible by continued smelting, is retained in the form of 'prills' of matte." On a recent visit to Greenwood, B. C., I was discussing with J. E. McAllister, the general manager of the British Columbia Copper Co., and the former metallurgist of the Tennessee Copper Go., this very question; and he held strongly to the idea that the copper in slag was in two forms—one portion contained in occluded matte and the other as an oxide. He believed that this same rule would apply to the silver in the slag. From my experience I am strongly inclined to agree with Mr. McAllister; and it appears quite reasonable that in furnaces treating oxidized copper-ores, and to a less degree in furnaces treating sulphide ores, there is always bound to be present a certain amount of copper oxide and silver oxide, which will behave like any base and get into the slag as such. We all know that in Arizona, in the early days, when it was customary to produce black copper, because the ores were nearly all oxidized or carbonates, and eulphur was scarce, the slags as a rule carried 2.5 per cent. of copper and seldom ran

Albert Ladd Colby, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary†):—I observed (Trans., xxxvii., 585) that to obtain tenders from several American mills, the foreign engineer should modify his maximum phosphorus to 0.10 per cent., not as Mr. E. Windsor Richards quotes me, that no American rail-maker can produce rails under 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus. Mr. Richards claims that no English engineer would agree to accept 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus on any terms whatever. Mr. Webster writes that only after an engineer has .been convinced that rails can be made in America equal in every respect to those he is getting abroad, should he be asked to modify ally conditions in his specifications. I know it to be a fact that during recent years in many cases, as, for instance, When delivery could be secured more promptly in the United States than in Europe, the consulting engineers of several British and colonial railroads have frequently agreed to modify their phosphorus requirement to a maximum of 0.10 per cent., and the rails delivered' under these modified specifications have, under like conditions, given just as satisfactory service and proved to be no more brittle than similar sections of 0.07 per cent. phosphorus rails, rolled in England under the same specification except without modification as to phosphorus. THE ores of the Tonopah, district are hard, compact and' highly siliceous. They contain from .1 to 2, per cent. of sulfide material, of which argentite is the valuable mineral; occasionally pyrargyrite is found in the richer ore. The sulfide is, chiefly pyrite with small amounts of chalcopyrite,. and sometimes sphalerite. The ore also contains a small amount of gold-about 1 per cent. by weight of the silver present. The major gangue constituent is quartz but frequently considerable rhodonite-called by the miners pink manganese-is present. For primary crushing, jaw and gyratory crushers are used. These crushers are of such capacity that, in most cases, one 8-hr. shift will supply the mill for 24 hr. The Extension Co., at the Victor ore house, passes the ore through a 13 by. 24-in. Blake type McFarland crusher set at 13 in., and at the No. 29 re house, a 14 by 24-in. Blake type Traylor crusher is used. The ore is thus crushed to stamping size in one reduction. The capacity of each crusher is about 40 tons per hr.; the power consumption is 0.6 kw. per ton.

Dr. Healy's paper presents a concise state-of-the-art description of mechanistic, thermodynamic models available today for design, interpretation, and trouble-shooting flocculation processes and problems. Coagulation by manipulation of inorganic electrolyte concentrations is controlled largely by adjustment of electrostatic repulsive forces, guided by well understood theory. For simple solids in simple electrolytes, existing models are capable of predicting the influence of potential determining ion and one dominant, non-reacting, symmetrical electrolyte concentration on floc stability quantitatively. Concentration changes required to coagulate and disperse can be estimated. Convenient, easily understood means are available for summarizing the effects of key variables, (e.g., pH, ionic strength) on dispersion stability, and estimating tolerance to unintentional changes (Matijevic coagulation domain diagrams). These models have not been developed to the point that mixed unsymmetrical electrolytes can be easily handled. They are capable of describing two- solid heterocoagulation, but not “n-solid” heterocoagulation. In combination with recently developed computer codes for simultaneous computation of solution equilibria, ion exchange and electrical double layer properties (1,2), these models .should be capable of describing simple clay coagulation systems. This has not been done. Models developed for polymer flocculation are valuable interpretive tools, have some qualitative predictive value, but are less potent in quantitative needs. Most real systems probably involve more than one mechanism of floc stabilization. Little has been done toward developing combined models, even in the simplest systems.

Raphael PUmpelly, who became a member of the Institute in 1871, the year of its organization, and retained his membership for a long period, died at his home in Newport, R. I., Aug. 10, 1923. He is survived by a son, Raphael, Jr., and by two daughters, one of whom is the wife of Prof. Henry L. Smyth, of Harvard. Doctor Pumpelly was born in Oswego, N. Y., in 1835. He studied sciences and mining engineering in Paris and at Freiberg, later taking his Doctor's degree at Princeton. He was Professor of Mining at Harvard from 1866 to 1873. Doctor Pumpelly made geological explorations in many lands. In 1861-63, he conducted a scientific exploration for the Japanese government, and for two years thereafter carried on researches in central, western, and northern China and Mongolia. In 1864-65, he undertook a voyage of exploration across the Gobi desert, returning to Europe through Siberia. He was State Geologist of Michigan from 1869 to 1871; Director of the Missouri Geological Survey from 1871 to 1873; and Chief of Division, U. S. Geological Survey, directing the mineral industries division of the tenth census. He organized and directed the Northern Transcontinental Survey, 1881-84; directed the explorations inaugurating the iron ore industry of most of the ranges of Michigan and Western Ontario, 1897-1901; initiated and directed a physical-geographical and archeo-logical exploration of Central Asia under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 19034.2.

EXPERIENCE has shown that certain known natural conditions and other indefinite characteristics combine to make a mining area vulnerable to mountain bumps. Some of the known conditions are heavy overburden, an overlying stratum of strong non-elastic rock, a structurally strong coal seam that does not crush easily and yet is the weakest stratum in the series, and a floor stratum of more than ordinary firmness. The indefinite characteristics could include resistance of top or bottom of a coal seam to lateral flow, effect of immediate top and bottom strata, nature of the coal seam, and other factors about which very little is known. It is in this area that exhaustive study is needed to achieve positive control of the dreaded mountain bump hazard. In the Gary district, West Virginia, two of the five operating mines have areas known to be vulnerable to mountain bumps.These are the No. 2 and 6 mines, which are working the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam. In this area the seam is overlain at a zero to 10-ft interval by the massive Eckman sandstone, which is about 100 ft thick in the vulnerable areas. Total overburden, consisting of shale, coal seams, and sandstones, ranges from 700 to 1400 ft where bumps have occurred (Fig. 1). The coal seam is 4 to 8 ft thick and has a weak columnar structure of very soft and spongy or woody coal. The immediate top is either the Eckman sandstone or hard shale, both of which provide generally good roof conditions for mining operations. The bottom ranges from medium to hard gray shale. The incidence of bumps in the Gary district dates from about 1930 and can be correlated to some degree with the increased rate of extraction attained with mechanical mining. During early years of operation at the No. 2 and 6 mines, most of the work was development and under comparatively light cover. As overburden became heavier, together with an increasing percentage of coal coming from pillar extraction, mountain bumps began to occur. Before 1945 they were much less severe than in later years, and because there were no injuries or fatalities, no records were kept. But by 1951 the incidence of bumps had increased to such extent that it became evident a mining system would have to be designed to eliminate or at least minimize these occurrences. Drawing on experience with modified versions of old systems and certain characteristics peculiar to the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam, the district mining engineer, Martin Hayduk, outlined the essential factors for bump control in the Gary district. These control factors indicated: 1) The highly stressed area, which lies within the limits of convergence effects, moves at approximately the same rate as the retreating pillar line. 2) There is a decided softening of the periphery of blocks which is greatest and deepest on the gob side. 3) Blocks less than 45 ft wide never have been known to bump in the Pocahontas seams. Fig. 2 shows the mining plan based on these observations—a thin-pillar system with a minimum of secondary development. It was recognized from the start that the Hayduk system had certain limitations. When pillar work backed up to an inevitable surrounded block it was no longer applicable; also, burnt bottom and/or unknown factors reduced the system's effectiveness in certain headings. Since there was no way to eliminate the loaded block, it was decided to experiment with auger drilling to attain controlled release of this stored-up energy.
