THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [(MG) l 2M +G2 = 2MG K = Ma X Pa, [I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Kl Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K _ Cu2S X (Cu20)2 (Cu)6(Pso2)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [8 =KI = Pte, or VSO2= K2 '~/PeO, [S]]

DECISION to build a mill at the Bayard property was made in May 1942. Western-Knapp Engineering Co., of San Francisco, assisted by engineers of U. S. Smelting, handled the design and construction. Much of the milling equipment was moved from the Company's mill at Goldroad, Ariz. Wartime restrictions necessitated wood construction and paper sheathing except for structures adjacent to the Bullfrog shaft. Construction started in September 1942 and milling in March 1943. Bayard ores are processed in a single-ection mill. About half of the ore treated during the past year was hoisted through the Bullfrog shaft and the rest was trucked from other shafts. Coarse storage includes four bins, two of 120 tons each for Bullfrog ores and two of 85 to 120 tons each, served by a truck ramp. The low capacity figure refers to

The purpose of this investigation was to measure PVT behavior of various types and combinations of heavy hydrocarbon components from the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic classes where the relative proportions Of the various components were selected to approximate those of natural gas or gas condensate systems. Synthetic mixtures were used so that the compositions Of the various components could be measured accurately. n-Heptane, methylcyclohexane and methylbenzene were used to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic components of the heavy fraction. In the mixtures studied, the heavy fraction composition was held constant at O. O5-mole lraction, the balance being methane except for one mixture where 0.10-mo1e fraction of an intermediate component, propane, was added. The PVT data for the mixtures were determined in a variable-volume, constant-mass apparatus at psuedo-reducedtemperatures from 1.84 to 2.00, over a pseudo-reduced pressure range from 2.3 to 12.0. The experimental results showed that, regardless of the type of heavy material (paraffinic, naphthenic, aromatic, or combinations thereof) mixed with methane or methane and propane, the compressibility factors at equal values of pseudo-reduced temperature and pressure varied by less than 2.2 percent. INTRODUCTION PVT data is used for natural gas and gas condensate fluids in determining reserves of reservoirs and performance of wells, in metering produced fluids, and in recombining samples for laboratory studies. While there are vast amounts of PVT data reported for natural gas and gas condensate systems from which useful correlations have been developed, ' the compositional analyses for these systems and the resultant correlations typically were made with components analyzed through some arbitrary carbon number, usually C6, with the residue reported as a lumped "heavy" fraction. The heavy fraction was stoichiometrically recombined on the basis of an apparent molecular weight to give the final compositional analysis. It is virtually impossible to make a systematic analysis of the effect that variation of the relative amounts of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic constituents of the heavy fraction of natural systems might have on PVT behavior. Because there is considerable latitude in the relative amounts of these constituents, one speaks of crudes or condensate liquids as being "paraffin base", etc. It is of interest to determine if changes in the relative amounts of these three types of hydrocarbons in the heavy fraction cause significant changes in PVT behavior. If so, steps should be taken to describe better the nature of the heavy fraction in PVT correlations. If not, more confidence can be placed in the correlations presently employed. DESIGN OF THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION We attempted to determine if changes in the base of the heavy fraction would cause significant changes in the PVT behavior of gas or gas condensate fluids. Synthetic mixtures were used to enable us to systematically vary the base of the heavy fraction and to analyze accurately the fluids. We found that the heavy fraction of naturally occurring condensate systems seldom exceeds 0.05-mole fraction. Thus, the mole fraction of the heavy fraction in the synthetic systems studied was set arbitrarily at 0.05, to maximize whatever deviations in PVT behavior that might occur. Further, we judged that since the C7 hydrocarbons normally are present in greater quantities than higher carbon number hydrocarbons in naturally occurring systems, the use of n-heptane, methyl cyclohexane, and methylbenzene to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic species in the heavy fraction would be most appropriate. NEVER before have so many men chosen the mineral technology field for their college training. In the college year 1936-'37, 7190 such students were enrolled in the 53 schools of the United States. My last study of the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada was made for the year -1934-'35, and the current study, as the previous one was made for the A.I.M.E. under the auspices of the Division of Mineral Industry Education. Altogether, four studies of enrollment have been made. The first three were for successive college years beginning with 1932-'33. This present one covers a two-year period, for the purpose of these studies may he served satisfactorily if they are made biannually. The data on the schools were collected in the same way as for former studies, 'namely, by questionnaire, dated in this case Nov. 18, 1936. The figures reported are therefore comparable with those of former cars.

The delay time for single crystals of iron, zinc, and pre-strained aluminum was measured under conditions of high-speed deformation. The delay time of aluminum was found to be affected by the orientation of the crystal. Under the dynamic conditions employed, tile calculated "activated volume" term appears to be very small for the three metals studied. IN a previous paper,1 it was shown that under dynamic testing conditions at 78° K, there was a delayed yield in single crystals of aluminum and copper which had been cold-worked prior to testing. The experimental results also indicated that the delay-time effect was not due to the interaction of dislocations with impurity atoms or vacancies, but rather to a dislocation-dislocation interaction since aluminum which has not been prestrained shows no delay-time phenomenon. In this paper, some data are reported on the effects of orientation on the delay time of aluminum single crystals; the delay time of zinc single crystals saturated with nitrogen and the delay time of iron single crystals also were measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum (99.997 pct) and zinc (99.999 pct) crystals, 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown by the Bridgman technique. The iron single crystal was supplied by Dr. R. Maddin. The zinc crystals containing nitrogen were prepared by melting high-purity zinc in a graphite crucible and the nitrogen was introduced by additions of ammonium chloride. The liquid zinc was then drawn up into glass tubes of 1/2 in. diam and allowed to solidify. The rods were cooled to room temperature before the transfer to the mold for conversion into single crystals. The orientation of all specimens was determined by the Laue' back-reflection technique, Fig. 2 and Table I. To prepare for the delay-time measurements, the crystals were cut with a fine jewelers saw and the ends carefully machined. The specimens then were electrolytic ally polished to remove the cold-worked metal, mounted in a special fixture and hand-lapped. As a final step, the crystals were annealed in evacuated tubes. Specimens of aluminum crystals, Nos. 24 and 26, were compressed 0.5 and 2 pct, respectively, in the direction of the later impact. The zinc specimens were aged at 50°C for 15 min, In the case of iron, only two specimens could be obtained. To obtain sufficient data, it was necessary to resort to a reaging treatment. After each delay-time test, the specimens were aged at 65° C for 100 min. This treatment, according to Clark,2 is sufficient to restore the original delay time. It is believed that although the specimens were plastically deformed approximately 10-4 pct, after each test the delay-time values are reliable. The delay-time measurements were made in an apparatus similar to that described previously.' Single crystals approximately 1 in. long and having a diameter of 1/2 in. were placed in a pendulum which consisted of a bar 1/2 in. in diam and 8 ft long, designed with a crystal holder to accommodate the specimen at low temperatures. The crystal was held at a position 2 ft from the front part of the pendulum. This portion of the apparatus was supported on a fine molybdenum wire. J. B. Seabrook' recently published properties of a low-alloy Ni-A1 age-hardening steel known commercially as "Nitralloy-N". He mentioned three possible mechanisms of age hardening, viz. order-disorder in the matrix, order -disorder in a precipitate, and a precipitate that goes in and out of solution reversibly without losing coherency. The following results indicate that the last - mentioned of these mechanisms is the cause of age hardening in Nitralloy-N. The reversibility of the age hardening with a sub-critical solution temperature was demonstrated strikingly by Seabrook, whose results are reproduced in Fig. 1. Aging for 22 hr at 975°F (525°C) can reharden the fully-tempered martensite to its original as-quenched hardness of R, 45. A Nitralloy steel was obtained from Seabrook' with the following analysis:

This paper attempts to show the role of induced polarization (IP) and resistivity surveys in the discovery of the ore bodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) and the importance of conducting large enough surveys to properly evaluate the results. The first IP survey was conducted in the area in 1963. This survey was extended and other IP surveys were added to it for the next seven years. The data from these surveys was finally combined to produce four large scale plan maps of resistivity and percent frequency effect (PFE) results (N = 1 and 3). A halo-type anomalous zone 6000 ft wide and 14,000 ft long was thus outlined in the PFE maps. The four ore bodies of Gibraltar Mines were found to occur along the inside rim of this IP halo.

[ ] S. H. Ash (Mining Industry Continues with Lower Fatal-Injury Rates, P. 257) was born in Roslyn, Wash. and attended Lehigh University and University of Washington. He received a B.S. and E.M. degree in mining engineering. Mr. Ash was supervising engineer in charge of work of Safety Div., Bureau of Mines, eastern Pennsylvania and the states of N. Y., Del., N. J. and the New England states. He was appointed chief engineer of Metal and Nonmetal Mining Section of the Mineral Production Security Div., Bureau of Mines, July 1942. At present he is chief engineer, Safety Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Besides holding membership in AIME, he is a member of National Honorary Engineering Society, Society of American Military Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and many other societies.

IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. similar results had previously been obtained by Farren and Taylor2 and Hort3 and more or less simultaneously with the author's work by

IN recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particularly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion [ ] resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method' employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high temperatures of 1200° to 1400°C. (2200° to 2550 F.) caused excessive grain growth and warpage. Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- [ ] mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930° to 1040°C. (1700° to 1900°F.). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. Wet dust suppression can be achieved by 1) confinement of the dust within the dust producing area with a curtain of moisture, 2) wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture or 3) the formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, or too heavy to become airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid; however, it is not as effective for dust suppression as when small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with it. Performance of dust control com pounds is related to surface active agents and surface activity. In all liquids there is an attractive force between molecules which varies inversely as the sixth power of the distance between molecules. Thus, in the liquid phase where molecules are crowded together, the intermolecular forces are powerful; whereas in the liquid-vapor phase where the molecules are relatively far apart, these forces diminish rapidly. In the body of a fluid there is an uneven distribution of forces resulting in an inward pull called surface tension. The force which keeps two surfaces apart or causes them to coalesce is termed interfacial tension. Fluids of high surface tension exhibit poor wetting, spreading and penetrating qualities. Water has the unusually high surface tension of 72.75 dynes per cm at 20°C.

A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900º to 1000ºC., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.
