ThE strain-induced martensitic transformation may be used to attain desirable combinations of strength, ductility, and fracture toughness. One of the parameters is the relative stability of the austenite. For example, it has been shown by Zackay et al.1 that the volume percent of strain-induced martensite is related to the combination of strength and elongation obtained. It has also been shown that the degree of transformation is an important factor in the crack propagation resistance of metastable austenitic steels.2 Considering both tensile and crack-propagation tests, it was of interest to see if there was any functional relationship between the amount of strain and the volume of strain-induced martensite. Previously,9 it had been shown that at room temperature, there was a relationship between uniaxial tensile strain and the volume percent of resulting martensite given by The data were obtained by plastically elongating tensile samples to a certain strain and then measuring the field strength to determine the strain-induced ferromagnetic volume. This was accomplished for two conditions having yield strengths of 229 and 233 ksi. The nominal composition of this material was 9Cr-8 Ni-3 Mo-2 Mn-2 Si-0.25 C-0.09 N. In evaluation of the strain-induced martensite at a crack tip: the question arose as to whether Eq. [1] would also be valid under triaxial stress conditions. Tests were conducted on 1/2-in. thick plate material having a composition of 9 Cr-8 Ni-4 Mo-2 Mn-2 Si-0.27 C. It was found that sectioning, polishing, and etching of fractured specimens could reveal the strain-induced martensite occurring at a crack tip. Care had to be taken to minimize the final polishing steps so as to avoid a smeared layer of strain-induced martensite. Recovery and primary recrystalliza-tion in cold worked metals are usually considered as two competing processes. Some of the effects which usually accompany recovery are: alleviation of stress corrosion tendencies, changes in thermal emf,1 damping capacity,2 electrical resistivity,2 and magnetic properties,3 and only minor changes in hardness or the related strength properties. During primary recrystalliza-tion new unstrained grains are formed at the expense of the strained matrix. These new grains eventually become visible metallographically, and nucle-ation and growth kinetics have been indicated for this process.4,5 Frequent attempts have been made to study the cold-working phenomenon by observations on the line broadening by X ray diffraction patterns. Relatively few measurements of line intensities have been made, although Brind-ley and his collaborators, 6,7,8 by means of film techniques, compared the intensities of cold worked Cu, Ni, and Rh patterns with those from chemically precipitated powders. These precipitated powders were presumed to be strain free, and it was found that the intensities for the cold-worked materials progressively decreased as the Bragg angle increased except for the first line, where there was an increase due to reduction in extinction. This was interpreted as a randomness in atomic position induced by cold work. Such randomness is similar to that caused by thermal agitation and has been described as "frozen heat" displacement of 0.08-0.10 A from the mean atomic position. In a recent study9 on the effect of cold work in metals on their powder pattern intensities, the changes in integrated intensity for heavily cold worked alpha brass were observed as a function of the annealing temperature. These measurements were made with a manually operated Geiger-counter spectrometer using CuKa radiation monochromated with a rock salt crystal. Intensity measurements were made with a scaling meter over small intervals of angle, and the equipment was so arranged that the diffracted and incident beams made equal angles with the specimen. Intensities could be compared directly by simply interchanging specimens, and comparisons from day to day were made with a standard whose line intensities did not change on aging. It was shown that a cold worked alpha brass standard was stable for at least a year. Table 1 indicates the results of the integrated intensity measurements on a 70 Cu-30 Zn brass. In the sample preparation, a brass plate was first cold rolled 50 pct and then filed, screened to —325 mesh, compacted into briquettes at a pressure of 60,000 psi and finally annealed for one hour at various temperatures up to 400°C. The briquetting pressure did not seem to influence the integrated intensities, and most of the cold work was introduced by the filing. Although this method of cold work is not quantitative, it was used to obtain random orientation (and thus uniform diffraction lines) in order to make accurate measurements of integrated intensity. Back reflection patterns were taken in each case to check the uniformity of the lines, and from the observed line broadening it was apparent that this type of plastic deformation was quite severe. Care was taken to traverse the entire background of the pattern and to assign to each peak the total intensity above this background. The bases of the diffraction lines were quite broad and spread out over several degrees, even for the narrow peaks. The theoretical intensities were calculated to include a temperature correction, a dispersion correction, and a Lorenz- polarization factor corrected for the crystal monochromated beam. In Table 1 it was necessary to match the calculated and observed values at only one point, and the rest of the experimental values were converted directly to this arbitrary scale. The integrated intensities in Table 1 are listed in arbitrary units, and the accuracy was sufficient to reproduce any of the measured line intensities to within + 1.5 units. It is evident that the percentage error on the strongest line (111) was quite low. The calculated values and the observed intensities for the cold worked material matched reasonably well. As the annealing temperature was raised, however, the intensity of the strongest reflections, particularly the (lll), decreased measurably. A constitution diagram for the system Mo-Ir has been determined. The maximum solubility of iridium in molybdenum is 16 at. pct at 2110ºC and decreases to less than 5 at. pct at 1500°C. The solubility of molybdenum in iridium is 22 at. pct. Three intermediate phases appear in the system: 8 MoJr, having the p-tungsten structure; a phase, a cornplex tetragonal structure; and the hcp ? phase. Metallography, melting point determinations, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and electron micro-probe unalyses were employed in establishing the diagram. PREVIOUS to the present investigation, the intermediate phases in the Mo-Ir system were identified, but no detailed account of the phase diagram has been reported in the literature. Raub1 investigated alloys of Mo-Ir over an extensive range of composition between the temperatures of 800º and 1600°C. The in-termetallic compound MosIr was found to exist with nearly pure molybdenum, as the solubility of iridium in molybdenum was not detectable parametrically in this temperature range. MO3Ir was found to be iso-morphic with a ß-tungsten type structure, having a parameter of 4.959Å. An intermediate hcp phase, designated as the ? phase, ranged in composition from 52 to 78.5 at. pct at 800ºC, and from 41 to 78.5 at. pct Ir at 1200°C. Parameters noted for the ? phase were as follows: at 42.7 at. pct Ir, a = 2.771i0, c = 4.4366, c/a = 1.601; at 78.5 at. pct Ir, a = 2.736A, c = 4.378A, c/a = 1.600. Molybdenum was found to be soluble in iridium up to 16.5 at. pct Mo (83.5 at. pct Irj, with the parameter of iridium increasing to 3.845A at the solubility limit. Knapton,2 who investigated alloys between 15 and 85 at. pct Ir, essentially agreed with Raub's data, but, in addition, found a a phase in as-melted alloys near 25 at. pcto Ir. The oaphase lattice parameters were a = 9.64Å, c = 4.96Å, c/a = 0.515. The a phase was replaced by the 8 -tungsten phase on annealing at 1600°C. Knapton concluded that the a was stable only at elevated temperatures, and placed the composition of the a phase at approximately 30 at. pct Ir. The intermetallic compound Mo3Ir, with a lattice parameter of 4.965A, was included among the 8-tungsten structures reported by ~eller.' Matthias and Corenzwit,4 and Bucke15 studied the superconducting nature of MosIr, and reported a superconducting transition temperature of 8.$K. The present investigation describes the phase relationships in the Mo-Ir alloy system determined by melting point measurements, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and metallography. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys for the determination of the phase diagram were prepared from powders. Commercial 99.9 pct Mo from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and 99.9 pct Ir powder from J. Bishop and Co. Platinum Works were used. The powders were weighed to nominal compositions, mixed, and then pressed, without binder, into compacts weighing 4 to 6 g. These were presintered in uacuo between 1200' and 1400°C for 1 hr, to reduce the degree of spattering during subsequent arc-melting. The compacts were arc-melted in a nonconsumable tungsten electrode furnace six times on alternate sides on a water-cooled copper hearth in an atmosphere of zirconium-getter ed argon at 500 mm of mercury pressure. In almost all cases, this procedure yielded buttons of satisfactory homogeneity. The composition of all melted buttons were confirmed by X-ray fluorescent analysis using the experimentally determined ratio of the iridium La1 line intensity to that of the molybdenum Ka1 line as a function of composition. In this determination four alloys analyzed by wet chemical methods were used as standards. An uncertainty range of ±1 at. pct has been attributed to all indicated compositions. All heat treatments and solidus measurements were carried out in tantalum resistance heating elements in vacuum conditions of 10-4 to 10-5 mm of mercury. A detailed account of this procedure has been reported by Schwarzkopf and Brophy.8 In the heat treatment and solidus measurements of iridium-rich alloys (50 at. pct Ir or greater), a tungsten lining was inserted into the tantalum resistance heating element because of a eutectic reaction which occurs between iridium and tantalum at 1948ºc.7 Heat treatments and solidus measurements carried out at compositions less than 40 at. pct Ir both with and without tungsten linings within the resistance

Discussion of the paper of HOWARD N. EAVENSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 413 to 430. WILLIAM H. GRADY, Bluefield, W. Va.-Mr. Eavenson gave a comparison between accidents in the State of West Virginia and in the Pocahontas field. The figures quoted are, I presume, taken from the reports of the State Mine Inspector. There are no statistics available, in readily accessible form, giving a comparison between the Pocahontas field and the mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. which are a part of the field. It occurs to me that the paper would be more complete with these data and I will say that the mines of the Pocahontas field produced during the year 1913 about 15,000,000 tons, about 3,000,000 tons of which was produced by the United States Coal &Coke Co. This gives an indication of the extent of its operations. The Pocahontas field lies largely in the counties of McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming in West Virginia, and Tazewell in Virginia.: Without consulting maps, I should say that all of the acreage under operation at present by this company lies wholly in McDowell County and that the average conditions off roof top and bottom in its mines are the average of the county, but that the worst conditions in some of these mines are the worst to be found in the county. The average conditions in Tazewell County are about the same as in McDowell County, except that the average thickness of the seam is much greater. The average conditions of top and roof and bottom are better in Mercer and Wyoming counties than in the mines of the United States Coal &. Coke Co.; the worst conditions in these counties are not so bad as in McDowell and Tazewell counties and the best are better than those encountered in McDowell and Tazewell counties; also the thickness of seam is less in Mercer and Wyoming counties. F. C. HENDERSCHOTT,* New York, N. Y.-I am going to take, as the text of what I shall discuss, a portion of the second paragraph of Mr. Stanford's paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

Discussion of the paper of George C. Stone, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2401 to 2402. D. S. JACOBUS,* New York, N. Y.:-The engineers of the country are waking up to the possibilities of waste-heat boilers. As the cost of fuel increases, and as more attention is given to economies, it is evident that a great deal may lie gained by utilizing heat that has ordinarily been wasted. The art in the manufacture of' waste-heat boilers has. advanced so that it will now pay to install them under certain conditions where it would not have paid to install boilers constructed in accordance with older methods. In using boilers where the gases are at a comparatively low temperature, a great deal depends on the method of baffling the boiler in securing good results. The Babcock & Wilcox Co. has made a careful investigation of the laws of heat transfer and has applied the same to waste-heat boilers, which have been carefully tested under operating conditions, with the result that we now know what to expect with different arrangements of baffles and heating surfaces. The old idea of installing waste-heat boilers was to provide an arrangement where the draft loss would be a minimum, and little or no attention was paid to the effect of different systems of baffling on the steaming capacity of the boiler. In some instances, to secure a minimum draft loss no baffles were placed in the boilers. After making a most careful study of the subject it developed that this practice was bad, and that to obtain the best commercial economy, in place of endeavoring to obtain a minimum draft loss, an arrangement should be used that would lead to the maximum amount of heat transmission with a comparatively high draft loss. In nearly every case the amount of resistance of the gases fussing through the boiler involves the use of an induced-draft ,fan, but the additional capacity developed by the boiler over that which could be secured with the older designs, through arranging the heating surface properly and using proper baffles, much more than pays for the increase in the steam required to drive the fan.

It may surprise the learned metallurgists who read this paper to learn that, by a recent discovery, nails of good quality can be made at one operation, directly from the ore, at the rate of, say, sixty per minute for each operator. It should be stated, however, that the raw material referred to does not answer strictly the ordinary assayer's definition of' an ore. It is found, in strata of various thickness, in Harlem, N. Y., and other localities where the débris from restaurants and from sheet-metal factories of various kinds has been dumped. In other words, it is old and new tin-scrap—one of the few substances which this generation, mainly occupied in exhausting the accumulated resources of the past, seems to have laid up, by way of atonement, for the benefit of posterity. In speaking of this material as ore, we are simply looking forward, prophetically, to the time when our descendants may dig it. up and write learned papers for the American Institute of Mining Engineers upon the best methods of assaying and smelting it. At least such has seemed to be its destiny hitherto. It may fairly be said that the many attempts which have been made to utilize it by separating, through chemical or electrolytical processes, its two valuable constituents, metallic tin and first-class wroughtiron, have failed, either technicaljy or commercially. The reasons fur such failure need not here be discussed: Either the separation has been incomplete, the iron still retaining enough tin to spoil it for the sinking-fire, or other use short of re-melting (perhaps even for that), or the manipulations of the process have been too expensive to make its results profitable—or both. Meanwhile the great tin-scrap deposits have gone on growing faster than any other strata of our Post-Tertiary, Psychical Era; given up by metallurgists, not yet attacked by geologists, and explored only by that mining engineer of the transitional period, Gulielmus Caper. Before leaving these heaps of tin-scrap, however, to become mere mineral deposits for future ages, it may be well to consider a novel plan for their immediate utilization—novel, not only in its means, but in its principle. FOLLOWING the presentation at the annual meet-ing of the paper "Recent Developments in Classi-fication," by A. M. Gaudin and W. L. Remick, the discussion presented below took place: H. N. Spicer : I haven't been able to study this paper closely, but I would like to ask 'Mr. Remick something regarding the work done by the mechanical classifier. The screen test given here would appear to show that the classi-fier did very, very poor work. The 44 per cent efficiency calculated from this equation is much lower than any ordinary operation. Nothing is stated regarding the de-tails. of the operation, the slope of the classifier, the dilu-tion, the speed, and such other factors that influence results. I would also like to know something of the material that was worked. The Manhattan schist that I have seen them digging out of the subways is of a flaky nature, so that in any classifier, you might get the factor of fine flakes floating over. Was the same material used in the hydrotator test? The screen tests vary a whole lot. Mr. Remick: You will notice the Dorr classifier han-dled the circulating load. This classifier naturally was run in closed circuit. I should like to be pardoned for quoting from Mr. Bates' paper of last year on "Classifica-tion in the Witwatersrand Mills." In this report only two efficiencies were given for the so-called straight type Dorr classifier. One was 44.6 per cent and the other 61.6. I don't know whether or not an average should be taken for the proper performance. I assume that that test was performed under better conditions, yet the efficiencies av-eraged only 53.1 per cent. I am afraid I am taking the words out of Professor Taggart's mouth, but he has told me that the Dorr classi-fier at Columbia is not the proper size to work with the Hardinge mill with which it is connected. This indicates only the inadvisability of putting commercial sized mat chines in a school laboratory. You cannot, he says, get the proper tonnage from the Hardinge mill to work the Dorr classifier and get the best results. Mr. Bates' results show higher efficiency with the lower capacity. Now, on the other hand, I assume that the classifier described in Mr. Bates' paper was probably run at the proper capacity.. It is a rather puzzling question.

The system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100" to 1500ºC., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. Review of Previous Work The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as O2, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: 2M+G2=2MG K=(MG)2 /M2 X PG2 [I] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: MG = K1 vPG2 [2 Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: 6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu2O [3] K= Cu2S X (Cu2O)2 i - (Cu)6(Pso2) [4] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: K1 =V3SO2 /Pso2 or

Discussion of the paper of H. M. WARREN, A. S. BIESECEKER and E. J. POWELL, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 181 to 193. R.. V. NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

"By the way," lie asked. "who have they nominated for your next president."' "Doctor Becket," I told him- "Oh. that's line," he replied, in a heartfelt tone that rang with sincerity. "I have come in contact with him occasionally and he is just the right type.' And that is the way Dr. Frederick M. Becket impresses everybody. The right type. Most Institute members of the western group of hard-rock minors do not know him, but then they meet him in his swing around the circle next year they will not require a long acquaintance to sense his kindly and outstanding personality, to realize that he is a gentleman in the bet meaning o1 that word, a man of wide sympathies and interests.

MUCH has been said and written of the "Big Inch," of the terrific obstacles encountered in its construction, of the colorful and tough men engaged in its building, but little has been publicized of the engineering and economic problems behind the scenes. Long before Pearl Harbor it was apparent to the petroleum industry that a critical oil shortage could be expected along the Atlantic seaboard, owing to delay in tanker deliveries as a result of convoy movements, and to allocation of vessels for foreign shipments. This area, with a normal consumption of approximately 1,800,000 barrels per day of oil and products, was almost entirely supplied by tanker. Pipe lines supplied an average of only 20,000 barrels per day in 1939, 40,300 barrels per day in 1940, and 55,000 barrels per day in 1941. A small amount of oil and products was also delivered via barge.

THE essentials of the electrolytic zinc process, as now used in commercial plants, date back to work done by Letrange in 1881. He used sulfuric acid to leach roasted sulfide and ,oxide ores, purified his solution very much as we do now, and electrolyzed the purified zinc sulfate solution. Ten years later Hoepfner developed a process using chloride solutions, and built three plants. One in England operated until 1924 in one of the works now merged in the Imperial Chemical , Industries, Ltd. Ashcroft built a plant in 1898 in the Broken Hill district of Australia. He used both chloride and sulfate solutions.. While his work failed, the aid his published results have been to later workers has made him an outstanding contributor to the de- velopment of the electrolytic zinc process. A good deal of work was done in the following years, aiming to electrolyze zinc chloride solutions and fused zinc chloride. Quite a bit of work on sulfate solutions was also done in the last years before the war. With the outbreak of the war, metal demand and rise in metal prices provided the stimulus which resulted in the remarkably rapid commercial development of electrolytic zinc. In this last period of development, all the work brought to commercial fruition has been with sulfate solutions. The high-density process, or the Tainton process, is used, as you know, in the Sullivan electrolytic zinc plant at Kellogg, Idaho, and will be used in the Evans- Wallower plant now being built at East St. Louis. The low-density process is used by the other plants now operating in the United States and other countries. There are now in operation and under construction four electrolytic zinc plants in the United States, two in Canada, two in Italy and one each in Australia, Rhodesia, Poland, Norway and Germany.

ASIDE from the annual dinner-dance, the two outstanding social events of the Annual Meeting were the dinner- smoker on Monday night and the informal dance on Tuesday night, both of which were held at the Commodore Hotel. Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.
