ALTHOUGH the kinetics of the atmospheric oxidation of tin have been studied,1-3 the kinetics in pure oxygen have not been reported. This note presents some results of the kinetics of the oxidation of tin foil in pure oxygen. The tin foil used in this investigation was 99.78 pct pure, the two major impurities being Pb (0.17 pct) and Sb (0.024 pct). The foil was degreased and air-dried prior to oxidation. The air-formed film was estimated by coulometric reduction4 of the surface oxides to be about 25A. The samples, which were in strip form and had a total geometric surface area of about 300 sq cm, were first evacuated at room temperature in an oxidation bulb to 1 X 10 -5 mm Hg and subsequently degassed for 1 hr at the temperature of the experiment. Spectroscopically pure oxygen was then introduced into the bulb. The rates of oxidation were measured by following the rate of pressure change due to oxygen consumption in a closed system, the volume of which was sufficiently large so that the pressure change during an experiment was 10 to 15 per cent of the total pressure. An oil-mercury manometer,5 with a sensitivity of 3 X x mm Hg (which corresponds approximately to 5 X 10 -7 gm of oxygen) was used to measure the pressure change. The oxidation bulb was heated by an oil-bath and controlled to within -10.3 C. The reproducibility of the rates was good, as determined by the coincidence of rates at 190oC for duplicate experiments. Fig. 1 shows the oxidation curves in the temperature range 168 to 211.5oC at 8 mm Hg pressure. The effect of pressure on the rate of oxidation at 190°C is also shown. The rate of oxidation was not markedly affected by changes in pressure in the range 4 to 9 mm Hg, except perhaps at the lowest pressure, 4 mm Hg, where after about 70 min there appeared to be a decline in the rate, as compared with the rate at the higher pressures. At the lower tem- perature, 168oC, and for short reaction times, it is difficult to distinguish between a linear relationship and a slight curvature in the oxidation rate. However, for longer times, there was a somewhat larger indication of curvature. The samples after oxidation were gold-colored in appearance. The oxide that was formed at 170°C was identified as a-SnO by reflection electron diffraction. This is in agreement with results obtained by other workers.6, 7 The rate data best fitted the logarithmic-oxidation rate law, w = K1n ln(1 + -t/to) [1] where w is the weight of oxygen consumed, t is the time, and K In, and to are constants. The next generation of integrated circuits will probably include circuits constructed in and of GaAs. The existence of both semi-insulating and semiconducting forms of GaAs is the fact which will bring this about. In this paper we discuss the uses and limitations of semi-insulating GaAs for integrated-circuit applications. The two main areas considered are the electrical isolation that can be achieved between components on a semi-insulating substrate and the characteristics of p-n junctions in contact with semi-insulating GclAs. A process basic to attaining integrated circuits in GaAs to fully utilize the insulating properties of the substrate is selective epitaxial deposition. This process involves the deposition of a SiO2 layer onto a The trend in integrated circuits is towards the use of high-resistivity substrates or regions to achieve component isolation. The use of SiO, layers in the oxide isolation methods and the use of sapphire substrates are examples of this idea. GaAs is also a polished surface of a GaAs substrate, etching out selected area of the SiO, film to expose a GaAs surface, and deposition only onto the exposed GaAs surface. By using this process , islands of semiconducting GaAs are deposited onto a semi-insulating GnAs substrate, the islands being electrically isolated from one another by the substrate. The deposition of both p- and n-type semiconducting GaAs can be carried out in this nzanner to form p-n junctions in the island areas. This process can also be used to produce a planav structure by deposition of GctAs through a SiO, mask into holes etched into the GaAs substrate. This Putterned Epitaxial Technology (PET) is described. very promising material for use in future integrated circuits because of the existence of both semi-in-sulating and semiconducting forms. Active devices can be fabricated in the semiconducting material, and these individual components can then be electrically isolated from one another by using semi-insulating GaAs as the substrate. Epitaxial semi-insulating GaAs can also be produced thus making three-dimensional monolithic integrated circuits feasible.' This paper describes the research aimed at developing the methods for producing both two- and three-dimensional integrated circuits in GaAs, and examines some of the properties of semi-insulating GaAs as they relate to these integrated circuits.

FOLLOWING the discovery of diamonds in 1870 and the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886 South Africa changed from a predominantly pastoral country with a scattered white population into a land whose economy came rapidly to be based primarily on mining. The total value of the mineral output of the Union in 1944 was approximately $493,000,000, to which gold contributed 84 per cent. Gold furnished some 33 per cent of the Union Government's total revenue in that year, and approximately half the country's population obtained its livelihood directly or indirectly from the gold mining industry. In any review of the Union's mining activities and in any consideration of the country's future, gold mining must occupy a prominent place. It is generally conceded that the present structure is not properly balanced and that an economy based on a preponderance of a single nonpermanent factor possesses potentialities of serious instability.

Abstract-The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975, due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had previously been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

FRED J. MILLER was born in Ohio, in 1857. He had a common and high school education, supplemented by personal study and special instruction. After serving a 4-year apprenticeship and working in various capacities in machine shops, he became a contributor to mechanical journals and finally a member of the editorial staff of The American Machinist, where he remained for twenty years, the last ten years as editor-in-chief of the magazine, and vice-president of the publishing company. On retiring from journalism, he was for nine years general manager of a group of typewriter factories, and was then commissioned Major of Ordnance in the U. S. Army, being stationed during most of his service at Rock Island Arsenal, where he organized the Civilian Service Division of the Arsenal. He is now a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the War Claims Board at Washington. Major Miller became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1890, and has always taken an active interest in its affairs, having served on a number of important committees, and as a member of Council from 1904 to 1907, inclusive. He was elected President in December, 1919.

In 1977, an article in World Mining1 reported a total of 2726 rotary blasthole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher. Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to reducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is best measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, there are five factors which affect the rate of penetration. They are: (1) bit selection, (2) weight on the bit, (3) rotary speed, (4) hole cleaning, and (5) formation properties. Of these factors, all but one may be controlled by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. One of these factors -- proper hole cleaning - will be discussed in this paper. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in redrilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole. In an in-depth study of the cleaning of large diameter holes, Allen2 reports that horizontal air velocities of 38.10 m/s are necessary to prevent the saltation of drilled cuttings on the bottom of the hole. The exact flow pattern on the bottom of the hole, however, is not generally known. The air leaves the bit through the jet nozzles and the mouths of the cones, but where it goes from there is uncertain. This problem should be investigated by the bit manufacturers because they can best utilize the results of such an investigation to provide a more effective product. Some work has been initiated in this area and competition will probably increase its intensity. Bailing velocity is the best criteria to measure the cleaning of the hole, including the bottom, and is the factor on which efforts toward improvement must be concentrated. The first consideration is "What should the bailing velocity really be?" In drilling deep holes for oil and gas, 15.24 m/s is the generally accepted figure. In blasthole drilling, the figures of 25.40 m/s for average rock to 35.56 m/s for iron ore were first mentioned by Capp3 in 1962. The recommendations are the same to this day. A number of questions could be asked in regard to the apparent disparity between these two sets of figures. Various investigators have derived formulas which support one or another of these criteria. A thesis on the subject was written by Alexander4 who derived a formula based on research which resulted in velocities in the lower end of the ranges quoted previously. He set out to compare this figure to laboratory tests and his tests indicated that the velocities given by the derived formula appeared to be high.1 Perhaps the best reason that the 25.40 to 35.56 m/s range has been used, is that these velocities seem to work. Below the accepted figures, low bit life and slow penetration rates occur. Above these figures, increasing amounts of abrasive wear on the drill pipe and stabilizers seem to appear. There is a fallacy to this entire approach, however. The entire velocity calculation is made using nominal bit and pipe sizes and compressor deliveries with no compensation made for losses in the system. Perhaps an examination of some of the things that are not presently considered could lead to some practical improvements in the operation.

THE principles and theory on which the U. S. mining law of 1872 was based are well understood, and have been discussed at great length by many writers. The papers by Dr. R. W. Raymond1 in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have covered the subject very fully, with explanations of practical results in many adjudicated cases. It is believed that the following instance of the application of the law in recent years will have some weight in a discussion of proposed changes in our mining laws. The litigation between the St. Louis Mining & Milling Co., and the Montana Mining Co., Ltd., a British corporation, over portions of the Drumlummon lode covered more than 20 years, and resulted in a judgment for damages in favor of the St. Louis Co. of such an amount that the Montana Co. declined to pay the judgment, and therefore lost the entire property. The Drumlummon lode claim in the Marysville district, Mont., was located in 1876 by Thomas Cruse. When he staked out his claim, he assumed that the discovery on the Drumlummon vein, and another showing of mineral about 200 ft. distant, were on the same vein, and the center line of the claim was given a course of N. 57'2'E. Development of the Drumlummon vein soon showed that its strike was about N. 15 E., and that the other outcrop was on the North Star lode; so it was inevitable that the Drumlummon vein would cross one or both side lines of the location, and the Montana Co. found it advisable to acquire adjoining claims on both sides of the Drumlummon, in order to avoid possible litigation over apex rights. They bought the Marble Heart, but would not purchase the Hopeful (see Figs. 1 and 2), at the terms proposed for the reason that exploration in the Cruse level had shown the vein to be barren in that region. The owners of the Hopeful were sinking an incline from that claim in 1889, and the Montana Co. enjoined them, contending

The energy crisis and the resurgence of mining activities highlighted 1972-73. Added to the impetus for more effective materials handling systems has been the continued upward trend of inflation and labor costs. The need for addressing the fundamentals has led to the trend toward an overall systems approach to materials handling problems.1 The decision to move forward with large mining ventures such as the $150 million Hibbing taconite comple2 and the immense Carajas iron project must base themselves on indepth studies of a host of factors viewed in the context of an integral mine-transport-market system. What's important is that each ton of pellet or ore must be an economical commodity at the end users' furnace. The project can still be viaable even if certain components in the entire network appear to be individually costly.

THE Duluth gabbro outcrops containing sulphides of copper, nickel, and iron are located on both sides of State Highway No. 1 an airline distance of 8.5 miles southeast of Ely in northeastern Minnesota. The region of known sulphide occurrences includes parts of sections 5, T. 61 N., R. 11 W., and parts of sections 25, 26, 32, 33, and 34, T. 62 N., R. 11 W. These sections, given in Fig. 1, are all in Lake County, Minnesota. Part of the area, which lies entirely within the Superior National Forest, is shown on the topographic map of the Ely quadrangle. The original discovery was made in 1948 when a small pit was opened in weathered gabbro rubble for use on a forest access road. A shear zone had caused unusual decomposition in this glaciated area, and the resulting copper stain was noted by Fred S. Childers, Sr., an Ely prospector, who began searching the outcrops along the base of the intrusive. He was joined in further exploration by Roger V. Whiteside of Duluth. In the summer of 1951 a small diamond drill was moved into the area and a hole 188 ft deep was drilled, passing through 11 ft of glacial drift into sulphide-bearing gabbro. This paper is a preliminary report on the geology of the newly discovered ore. The Duluth gabbro is one of the largest known basic intrusives and may be defined as a lopolith.' It extends northeastward from the city of Duluth as a great crescent-shaped mass that intersects the shore of Lake Superior again near Hovland, 130 miles to the northeast, see Fig. 2. The distance around the outside of the crescent is nearly 170 miles. The form of the intrusive is simple at Duluth where it ends abruptly north of the St. Louis River; at the east end, however, the gabbro splits into two elongated, sill-like masses separated mainly by lava flows and characterized by minor irregularities. The outcrop reaches a maximum width in the central part where it is about 30 miles across, and a maximum thickness of about 50,000 ft. It may be significant that the sulphides occur at the base of the thickest part. The lopolith has segregated into rock types ranging from peridotite to granite. The most abundant types are olivine gabbro, gabbro, troctolite, anortho-site, and granite. Of lesser importance quantitatively are peridotite, norite, pyroxenite, magnetite gabbro, and titaniferous magnetite. Grout estimates that two-thirds of the gabbro at Duluth is olivine gabbro. Variations in the percentages of plagio-clase, augite, olivine, and magnetite-ilmenite constitute the only essential differences found among the basic rock types. The predominant mineral is plagioclase, mainly labradorite. Plagioclase and olivine seem to have crystallized early, and the olivine rich rocks, usually troctolite, are found in the lower part. Segregations of titaniferous magnetite are abundant near the base of the gabbro along the eastern part and also occur far above the base. These have recently been described in detail by Grout.' Near the top, segregation has produced a gradation to granite, or "red rock," as it is known locally. This consists of quartz, red feldspar, and hornblende. The red rock forms a zone with a maximum width of nearly 5 miles but is quantitatively unimportant from Duluth northward for 35 miles. In Cook county, where the gabbro splits, each of the two sill-like masses has a red rock top somewhat thicker in proportion to the gabbro below than in the main central mass. The intrusive ranges from coarse to medium in grain size and from granitoid to diabasic in texture. Throughout much of the Duluth gabbro in Minnesota banding and foliation are well developed, as Grout has emphasized.V he bands are mainly a result of variation in the percentage of minerals, as in troctolite with alternating bands high in olivine and in plagioclase. A few bands may consist largely of one mineral, as is true of some segregations of magnetite. Many of the banded rocks show a clearly developed parallelism of platy plagioclase crystals, and both banding and foliation are believed to conform to the floor of the lopolith. Throughout its extent in Minnesota the Duluth gabbro dips east and south toward Lake Superior. It is generally believed to extend beneath Lake Superior and is found as a smaller mass exposed along the north side of the Gogebic district in Wisconsin and Michigan. The dip at and near the base ranges along most of its length from 20 to 40°, but at places the internal banding dips even more steeply. The dip of the upper part is much less, and if it is assumed that the flows along the north shore of Lake Superior are a dependable indication, it does not exceed 15". LOCATION AND HISTORY The Bunker Hill Mine is situated on the south side of the Coeur d’Alene River in Shoshone County of Northern Idaho near the City of Kellogg. Kellogg, the largest in the Coeur d’Alene District cities, is at an elevation of 2,300 feet and has a population of approximately 7,000 people. It can be reached by air, railway or highway. The history of the Bunker Hill Mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S . Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill ore body on the hillside above the present town of Wardner, Idaho, in Milo Gulch. A small concentrator was erected in 1886. Before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d’Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma Smelter at Tacoma, Washington, to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917 a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected and in 1927 and 1928, a modern Electrolytic Zinc Reduction Plant was built and put into operation by the Sullivan Mining Company which was 50% owned and now totally owned by The Bunker Hill Company. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The Bunker Hill ore bodies are found in gray and greenish gray quartzite and argillaceous quartzite of Precambrian age and are known as the Revett and St. Regis formations. Most of the ore bodies are found in the St. Regis formation.

In Cook county, where the gabbro splits, each of the two sill-like masses has a red rock top somewhat thicker in proportion to the gabbro below than in the main central mass. The intrusive ranges from coarse to medium in grain size and from granitoid to diabasic in texture. Throughout much of the Duluth gabbro in Minnesota banding and foliation are well developed, as Grout has emphasized! The bands are mainly a result of variation in the percentage of minerals, as in troctolite with alternating bands high in olivine and in plagioclase. A few bands may consist largely of one mineral, as is true of some segregations of magnetite. Many of the banded rocks show a clearly developed parallelism of platy plagioclase crystals, and both banding and foliation are believed to conform to the floor of the lopolith. Throughout its extent in Minnesota the Duluth gabbro dips east and south toward Lake Superior. It is generally believed to extend beneath Lake Superior and is found as a smaller mass exposed along the north side of the Gogebic district in Wisconsin and Michigan. The dip at and near the base ranges along most of its length from 20 to 40°, but at places the internal banding dips even more steeply. The dip of the upper part is much less, and if it is assumed that the flows along the north shore of Lake Superior are a dependable indication, it does not exceed 15º. The formations shown in Table I which are intruded by the gabbro range from Keewatin to Middle Keweenawan in age. They present a significant picture. At the top, the gabbro and its accompanying

This paper is a review of Montana reverberatory smelting practice covering a period of approximately fifty years, during which time the small furnaces that had been in use elsewhere for a century or more, without much change in size or method of operation, were revolutionized and were developed into the huge, continuously operating furnaces of today. A study of Montana practice is particularly instructive, since reverberatory furnace smelting for the production of copper matte received more attention there than in other smelting centers and many of the improvements that finally resulted in establishing the preeminence of this type of furnace over the blast furnace originated in Butte and Anaconda. The material in this paper was gathered from original sources, wherever possible, and all of the illustrations were made from original drawings, some of which have been simplified and worked over so as to be better adapted for reproduction. The aim has been to trace the modifications in design and operation which took place during the period in question—the reasons for the changes and the results achieved through them. For developments during the first twenty years, the technical literature of the period was freely drawn upon, but I am particularly indebted to W. M. Kelly, general foreman at the Anaconda Works, whose recollections and personal experience extend back to the early days. I wish to acknowledge the use made of publications of E. P. Mathewson, William Wraith and L. V. Bender, as well as information obtained here and there from friends and associates. The resume of Great Falls practice was compiled from correspondence, notes and drawings found in the files of the old Boston & Montana Co. and the tabulations showing the performance of furnaces at Butte and Anaconda are adapted from plant records and correspondence in the files of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The paper deals with some interesting comparisons that were made between furnaces operated under various conditions in connection with the Carson Case, and results obtained when using natural gas as fuel. This part of the paper may be considered original to the extent that these results have not previously been published.

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Candelaria silver mine is located in an arid, isolated desert setting in Sections 3 and 4, T.3N., R.35E., and Section 33, T.4N., R.35E., Mineral County, Nevada (Fig. 1). Silver was discovered in 1863 by Mexican explorers, and high grade silver veins were mined from the early 1870s through the 1880s. Essentially all mining had ended by 1890. The veins were mined by underground methods typical of the period. As is the case in many mining districts, Candelaria was studied and explored by a number of companies. All these efforts were terminated short of mine development because of low silver prices and difficult metallurgy. On March 1, 1976, Occidental Minerals (Oxymin) entered into a Limited Partnership agreement, known as Candelaria Partners, as General Partner with Congdon and Carey Ltd. No. 4. Prior to the agreement, Congdon and Carey had acquired the candelaria properties as part of a bullish silver program and did considerable exploration which indicated the possibility of a large reserve of shallow silver mineralization. GEOLOGY AND ORE DEPOSITS Silver and gold mineralization in the Candelaria district occurs in high-grade fissure veins with silver values ranging from 0.6 to 7.8 kg/t (20 to 250 oz per st). These veins, combined with the low grade disseminated mineralization in the intervening material between the veins, form Manto- like deposits 15 to 46 m (50 to 150 ft) thick. Three such deposits are found in the Candelaria district: the Lucky Hill, Mount Diablo, and Northern Belle deposits (Figs. 2 and 3). The average ore grade of the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo [ ]

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure were exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geochemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont province of Cabarrus and Stanly counties, N.C. The area chosen for study is shown in Fig. 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, N.C. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low metamorphic grade. The area is considered to be an early Paleozoic active, continental margin. 1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the north-western quadrant and slate belt rocks to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Aclivilies of magnesium in liquid Alg-Si alloys have been delermined between 5 and 60 at. pcl Si, close to the melling point of Mg2Si, by an improved isopieslic melhod. Silicon specinrens, held in alumina crucibles and graplrile conlainevs of special design, were healed in a letrlpevalure gvadient and equilibrated with mag-nesilcrrl rapor in a closed lilanium system. The ther-madynamic Junctions were calculated and compared with the thermodyuamic properties of the other three mg- Gvoup IVB systems. Lattice paramelers of three Mg2X compounds were measured. The bonding in the Mg2X compounds is largely covalent with small and uarying amounts of metallic and ionic conlvibutions. The Mg-Si phase diagram1 has one congruent melting compound, Mg2Si, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of this system. The free energy of formation of Mg2Si has been determined by the Knudsen cell technique2 in the range 572" to 680oC, by the transportation method3 between 858" and 950oC, and by the electromotive-force method4 in the range 400o to 600°C. Kubaschewski and villa5 and caulfield6 have measured the heat of formation of Mg2Si. An electromotive-force study of magnesium-rich liquid alloys was recently published by Sryvalin el al.7 The present investigation was undertaken to complete a general survey of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,a9,Mg-Sn,10,11 mg-Ge,12and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique, previously developed for similar measurements on liquid Mg-sn11 and Mg-Ge alloys,12 was modified for the Mg-Si system. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, silicon, were contained in dense alumina crucibles placed inside covered graphite crucibles which were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure. The alumina crucibles prevented contact between the highly corrosive liquid Mg-Si alloys and graphite. The graphite cruci- bles effectively preserved the high-temperature equilibrium composition of the liquid alloys containing highly volatile magnesium on termination of the experiments during the quench to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon of semiconductor-grade purity (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Brevard, N.C.) and 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. Graphite crucibles with press-fitted lids were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The alumina crucibles had a purity of 99.7+ pct (Triangle RR grade, Morganite, Inc., Long Island City, N.Y.). In preliminary runs the liquid alloys were contained in graphite crucibles following the exact procedure developed for the Mg-Ge system.'2 These runs failed due to appreciable reaction between the molten Mg-Si alloys and graphite, and the results have been discarded. The procedure was then modified and the Mg-Si alloys were subsequently held in alumina crucibles. For most of the runs alumina crucibles of known weight and approximately 6.3 mm ID, 12.5 mm height, 1.0 mm wall thickness were loaded with weighed amounts of silicon and encapsuled in tightly covered weighed graphite crucibles 5/16 in. ID, 2 in. helght, 3/32 in. wall thickness). The graphite crucibles were machined from rods which were 85 pct of the theoretical density. These crucibles were therefore sufficiently porous so as to permit magnesium vapor to effuse through the silicon under the experimental conditions of approximately 970O to 1220°C and 1 day equilibration time. However, negligible magnesium was lost from the crucible during the quench due to the slow effusion rate through the pores of the graphite. The inner alumina crucible prevented the liquid alloys from contacting the graphite, and the very tightly fitting graphite crucible lids served to retain any magnesium vaporizing from the alloys inside the crucibles during the quenching step.12 The loaded silicon-alumina-graphite cells were positioned, one above another, on a 16-in.-long titanium thermocouple well and tied securely to the titanium tube with thin molybdenum wires held in grooves around the circumference of the graphite crucibles. A thin (0.005-in.) molybdenum strip prevented contact between the graphite crucibles and the titanium. This assembly was lowered into a titanium reaction tube (la in. ID, 16 in. long, $ in. wall thickness) closed on one end which contained a 11/2-in.-long cylinder of magnesium at the bottom. The inner titanium thermocouple well was positioned eccentrically in the large tube because of the eccentric mounting of the cells on the well.
