At the Hanna No. 4-A mine of The Union Pacific Coal Co. a new system of trackless mining is being utilized to extract a 26-ft coal seam. By using shuttle cars and a conveyor belt for haulage in the rooms and panel entries instead of pit cars and panel hoist a saving of 12 cents per ton is expected. Mining is conducted in a 26-ft coal seam laid down on a synclinal structure with active workings on a pitch of approximately ten to twelve degrees. The coal seam is interbedded between a shale bottom and sand- stone top. The coal is friable, high in moisture, and subject to spontaneous combustion. The mine is rated gassy by the State Coal Mine Inspection Department. Mining is conducted at the present time by unbalanced rope haulage an main slopes spaced on approximate 4300-ft centers with the three-entry system driven to boundary lines, strike entries being turned on approximate 1300-ft centers. Panels are driven to the rise between entries at approximately 750-ft intervals with panel rooms driven on the strike 500 to 600 ft long, leaving 150 ft of barrier pillar between each block of panel rooms.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

LARGEST of any hoist installation ever manufactured in Canada is that being erected at No. 5 shaft, Creighton mine, of the Inter- national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. It is a bicylindrical conical- drum hoist with the drums arranged in tandem, and driven by two direct- current motors through single reduction gearing. This hoist was designed by the Canadian Allis-Chalmers, Limited and manufactured at their works in Lachine, Quebec.

p layers on n-type substrates of GaAs were prepared by difhsion of zinc into these substrates. Experimental details about the diffusion technique will be presented. It will be shown that inhomogeneity in the substrate doping level and crystal shucture defects cause nonplanarity in the junction plane. These nonplanarities give rise to high threshold current densities. From incremental sheet-conductivity measurements the zinc profile is derived. Data about surface concentration and gradient of the zinc concentration at the junction are presented. Finally, some results of laser diodes, which were made of wafers with extremely planar diffusion fronts, are discussed. ThE investigations reported here are part of a program concerned with the materials aspect in the fabrication of GaAs laser diodes. This includes studies of the influence of crystal defects introduced both during the growth of the crystal and as a consequence of subsequent diffusion. Compared with the progress made in the investigation of structure defects, for instance by X-ray microscopy in materials like silicon, no similar results are known so far for the case of GaAs. The further progress in laser diodes will depend very much upon our knowledge of these structure defects and subsequently upon our ability to avoid them. Laser diodes of GaAs had been made mostly by diffusing an acceptor impurity, normally zinc, into an n-type substrate. This procedure was found more convenient than the inverse one for various technical reasons. We will follow this line and restrict ourselves to zinc diffusion only in this paper. DIFFUSION TECHNIQUES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL In order to set a refgrence for our experiments, we used a standard procedure for the diffusion runs. The diffusions were carried out in a sealed quartz tube for 2-1/2 hr at 850°C. One milligram zinc arsenide (ZnAsz) per cu cm of the tube volume served as zinc source. Under these conditions the junction depth was between 25 and 30 p. It is assumed, according to the investigations of the zinc arsenide system by V. Lyons and V. ilvestri,' that ZnAs2 dissociates completely at 850°C into ZnsAsz and Asg. Since there is a condensed phase of ZnsAs2 in the tube at 850°C, the partial pressure of zinc is controlled by the pressure of the arsenic formed by the dissociation of ZnAs2. Due to the fact that the zinc partial pressure resulting from the dissociation of ZnsAsz is only a weak function of the partial pressure of arsenic, the amount of the initial ZnAs2 is not very critical. Experimentally, we found that the junction depth, as well as the surface concentration, was practically the same, if the ingots of ZnAs2 varied between 0.2 and 5.0 mg per cu cm. The wafers were oriented with the main faces in (100). Surface damage due to cutting and lapping was removed by a chemical-etch treatment in a rotating beaker (etch solution: HzSOr, H202, and HzO in a ratio 3:l:l). The GaAs substrate material was n type and doped with tellurium, selenium, silicon, or germanium. It was grown by means of horizontal or Czochralski techniques. ALTHOUGH surveying at mining properties is fundamentally the same regardless of the method of mining, at Climax, due to the nature of the ground, the policy of advance development work, and extremes in climatic conditions, surveying practice has had to be revised to meet the specialized conditions of this particular type of mining operation. The company's mine is one of the largest underground properties in the United States. It has proved ore reserves of 275,000,000 tons, 60,000,000 tons of which have been broken. To date, 109,000 ft. of development drifting have been driven, as well as 40,926 ft. of development raising, 10,000 ft. of ventilation drifting and raising, 16,000 ft. of exploration drifting, and 206,000 ft. of diamond drilling. Normal production varies between 1.2,000 and 15,000 tons daily. Development work proceeds at a rate of 11/2 tons developed for every ton milled and with a development of 18,000 to 20,000 tons per day, the following crew is required to take care of mine and surface engineering

Development and exploratory work in Mississippi during 1934 was rather active, resulting in the expansion of the proven area and the drilling of a number of important wildcat wells. Mississippi showed a decrease in drilling operations during 1934. There were 36 completions from 18 counties during this period compared with 58 completions from 22 counties during 1933. There was a considerable decrease in activity in the Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties with only 9 completions, resulting in 8 gas wells and 1 dry hole compared with 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells and 7 dry holes during 1933. Leasing and geophysical work was reported from several sections of Mississippi last year. Extensive exploration and drilling were carried on in Lamar, Hancock, Pearl River, Greene and Stone counties and on the flanks of the Jackson anticline. Exploration will be continued in these areas during 1935. Four important wildcats were completed during 1934, all of which were reported as being structurally high, but without having important shows of oil or gas. These tests were: Hix and Germany's, J. J. Newman Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 21-4N.-15W., Lamar County, abandoned at 3520 it. in the Wilcox; United Gas Public Service Company's Davis No. 1, sec. 30-1N.-5W., Greene County, abandoned at 7439 ft.; Gulf Refining Company's May L. Williams No. 1, sec. 33-5S.-17W., Pearl River County, abandoned at 4800 ft.; and Clarke County Oil Company's S. B. Kirkland No. 1, sec. 10-2 N.-16E., abandoned at 4002 ft. in the Eutaw. Another interesting wildcat was Gulf Refining Company's Dantzler Lumber Co. No. 6, sec. 22-4S.-llW., Stone County, abandoned at 7700 ft. (according to reports below the Selma chalk). A total of 114 of the 132 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field are still producing and have a combined open-flow capacity of 4,145,-696,000 cu. ft. Four of the abandoned gas producers were never connected to the lines. The open-flow capacity of three wells in the Amory field is approximately 1,000,000 cu. ft. Producing against a line pressure of 50 lb., the demand during December greatly exceeded the capacity.

Aging is a term that connotes a slow change in properties under ordinary operating conditions. It can be accelerated by increasing the temperature and by mechanical straining. The magnetic properties of iron and some of its alloys have for many years been known to be subject to such a change. But the cause of the change was not recognized until a few years ago after mechanical age-hardening in non-ferrous alloys of the "duralumin" type had been definitely shown, by means of solid solubility curves, changes in electrical resistance and microanalysis, to be caused by slow precipitation of one or more constituents from the solid solution. The similarity between the solid solubility curves of such alloys (Fig. 1) and those for iron-nitrogen (Fig. 2) and iron-carbon alloys (Fig. 3) below the A1 transformation point suggested at once that magnetic aging of iron might be caused by a similar process; namely, by the slow precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in the form of Fe4N and Fe3C at ordinary temperatures because of a cooling rate that had been too rapid to permit complete precipitation according to equilibrium conditions. This suggestion has since been amply confirmed, particularly by the comprehensive work of Köster1 on the effect of nitrogen and carbon. Typical curves are shown in Fig. 4 for the relationship between aging temperature and coercive force. Previous to the establishment of the precipitation-hardening theory it was thought that the effect of nonmetallic elements like C, N, O, etc., on the magnetic properties of iron was greatest when these elements were retained in solid solution, atomically dispersed throughout the interstitial spaces of the iron lattice2. Based on the theory that magnetic properties are intimately connected with the regularity of the lattice, it now follows quite logically that a greater effect on this regularity may be obtained when the above impurities are precipitated as very fine particles of Fe3C, Fe4N, FeO, etc., more or less uniformly dispersed within the grains. ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. This smallest subdivision is called the "unit process.'' For example, in a chemical reaction the unit process is

AT a joint meeting of the Tulsa Geological Society and the Mid-Continent Section of the A; I. M. E., held at Tulsa on March 21, the history of unit development in the Kettle- man Hills field was discussed. Robert C. Patterson? Super- visor for the U. S. Geological Survey at Taft, Calif., was the speaker. An abstract of some of his remarks follows: On July 1, 1923, curtailment agreement for two years was made between the operators of North Dome Kettleman and the U. S. Department of the Interior. In this it was agreed to consider a plan of unit development, or other cooperate method of developing the structure. As a result, Kettleman North Dome Association was incorporated in December, 1930, as a non-profit cooperative corporation under the laws of California. Approved in January, 1931, by California Oil and Gas Supervisor and by Secretary of Interior. On Feb. 10, 1931, it became an active organization through election of executive officers and eleven- directors. General manager chosen. Association started to function April 1, 1931. Assumed control of 10,800 acres of proved and semi-proved land, as shown in Table 1.

THE main orebody in the Hecla mine, Burke, Ida- ho, occurs along a nearly vertical shear zone in the Burke quartzite, with a substantial gouge and lamprophyre dike occurring in an irregular manner throughout the lode. The veins range from 3 to 40 ft. wide and dip from 70 deg. to 90 deg. There is 110 definite line of demarcation between the lode and the wall rock. Stringers of ore are often found in the wall rock for irregular distances. Horizontal but irregular quartz stringers are also found running into the walls and positions of the wall have a tendency to break to the quartz stringers and the accompanying gouge, which causes indefinite, uneven and extremely heavy side and top pressures.

ALTHOUGH the nomenclature of the chemical tools of flotation is probably familiar to you, it will do no harm to review it; . In order to make the terms more real I have employed an illustration which likens flotation to an old-fashioned balloon ascension, such as we witnessed in boyhood at the county fair. The mineral to be floated is the aeronaut, conspicuous in his gilt-spangled tights, who is to be separated from you and me and the other small boys who are standing about, said boys being the g-a-n-g-u-e, or g-a-n-g, as we would have spelled it. The oil film surrounding the bubble is the counterpart of the silken fabric of the balloon, and bubble and balloon will rise for. the same reason, namely. that the fluid outside it is heavier than the fluid within. In flotation reagent nomenclature the material of which the bubble is made is called the "frother.",

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

The performance characteristics 01 gas wells producing from formations which fail to stabilize within a relatively short period of time are obscured by the interrelation of the coefficient (C) and the slope "n" of the conventional back-pressure curve q = C(P2 f- p2s)n An empirical method is presented whereby the characteristic or true slope (11) of the back-pressure curve may be determined for a particular gas well. For those gas wells which do not stabilize within a relatively short period of time, the coefficient (C) is considered as a variable with respect to time and as a constant only with respect to a specific time. Thus, the back-presrure performance of such a well is presented as a series of parallel curve5, each curve representing the performance of the well at the end of a given time interval. Through use of the method presented, a simple presture gradient is developed and maintained within the drainage area around a producing gas well during the test period in order that the variation of the coefficient (C) with respect to time does not obscure the true value of the lope. INTRODUCTION The back-pressure method of testing gas wells as set forth by Schellhardt and Rawlins1 is dependent upon the requirement that a series of flow rates and corresponding pressure data be obtained under stabilized conditions. These data arc then plotted on logarithmic coordinates of flow rate (Q) vs difference in squared pressures (P2f — P2s) in order to determine the constants (C) and (n) for Equation 1. With respect to this method of presenting the performance characteristics of a gas well, it should be pointed out that although Equation 1 is an empirical relationship, the form of the equation was justified to a considerable extent by an independent development by Muskat and Botset.2 This development was theoretical in nature; however, certain assumptions with respect to the type of flow existing (viscous vs non-viscous) were madc which may or may not be correct. As the use of the method presented by Schellhardt and Rawlins spread through the industry, it became evident that the method of testing was applicable for those wells which approached stabilized prbducing conditions within a relatively short period of time. Performance characteristics could not be determined by this method, however, for wells which approached stabilized protlucing conditions slowly over a considerable period of time. This characteristic of "slow stabilization" has generally been associated with gas wells producing frorn reservoirs of low permeability. As the demand for natural gas continued to grow through the years, a great number of wells were completed in reservoirs of low permeability which exhibited "slow stabiliz:~tion" characteristics. Consequently, the problem of determining the true performancc characteristics of these wells became more apparent. It is with this problem in mind that the isochronal performance method of determining the flow characteristics of gas wells is presented.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). P= average detonation pressure in N/m2 (lb per ft2). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). The Caddo oil-field, shown in Fig. 1, is located in Caddo parish, northwestern Louisiana. The known producing territory of oil is covered by townships 19 N, 20 N, 21 N, 22 N, and ranges 15 and 16 W., shown in Fig. 2. The center of the field may be taken as Oil City, 24 miles north of Shreveport, on the Kansas City Southern railway. Shreveport is the second largest city in the State, and is the connecting point of five railroad-lines. Drilling at the present time, however, is going on all over northern Louisiana, especially in Caddo and the neighboring parishes. During the winter of 1908-09 I spent 'four months in the Caddo field, under the direction of the Louisiana Geological Survey and the U. S. Geological Survey. II. History and Development. Natural gas escaping at the surface is found at numerous places in northwestern Louisiana. At Shreveport, the plant of the Shreveport Ice & Refrigerating Co. has been lighted by natural gas for 20 years. The well was drilled for water, but was abandoned on account of the gas. A test well, put down in 1905 near the western limits of Shreveport, was driven to 1,650 ft., and encountered indications of gas and oil at various depths, but did not succeed in finding enough to be profitable. Attention was first attracted to the Caddo field in 1895 by indications in water-wells from 40 to 60 ft. deep, in which the pressure of natural gas was noticeable. This indication of gas in a shallow well led to the drilling of the first well in the Caddo field, the old Savage Brothers & Morricell, or the Caddo Lake Oil and Pipe Line No. 1. The rig for this well was erected in May, 1904, and drilling began in June, 1904. The well was bailed Mar. 23, 1905, with a small amount of oil. It was deepened July, 1905, and converted into a "gasser" Jan. 3, 1906. It was abandoned January, 1907. ON the morning of Monday, Nov. 9, 1936, two motorcycles, with sirens screeching, - escorted a procession of 70 automobiles from the Colonia Railway Station in Mexico City to the Hotel Geneve. Riding in' the cars were just over 200 visitors- members of the A.I.M.E. and their guests. They had come, via St. Louis, in two special trains from 24 different states for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute. During the morning they and 200 others, who had come from the United States by automobile or from various cities and mining camps in Mexico, duly registered with !efficient Mme.
