The drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of IIO ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. Geology The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 4.5° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelson-ite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more pronounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,' the TiO2 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. Sampling Methods and Procedure During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. THIS paper deals with a plant built under joint agreement between the Canadian and United States Governments to supply the strategic mineral, corundum, at a time when African production was dwindling and war demands still increasing. The operation began in September 1944, retreating the tailings from a former mill by gravity methods, and is still in production (Sept. 1946). In 1942, when it became apparent that South African production would be insufficient to meet mounting wartime requirements of corundum, a survey was made of Canadian sources of the mineral, at the request of the Foreign Economic Administration of the U. S. Government. The investigation1 indicated that the quickest and cheapest supply would be obtained by reworking the tailings deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Sampling of the dump by Canadian Government engineers revealed that 125,000 tons of tailings, averaging 2.96 pct corundum, was available for retreatment. Ore-dressing tests on representative samples of the deposit were conducted by the writer in the laboratories of the Industrial Minerals Section of the Department of Mines and Resources at Ottawa; and gravity concentration on tables was indicated as the most suitable method of treatment. Decision to proceed with the project was deferred until May 9, construction was begun on May 18, and tune-up operation of the plant begun on Sept. 15, 1944. CORUNDUM-ITS PROPERTIES AND USES Corundum is an oxide of aluminum having the formula A1203. Its outstanding characteristic is its great hardness; 9 in the Mohs scale. In this respect it is second only to the diamond. It usually occurs in barrel-shaped crystals in nepheline syenites and other feldspathic rocks deficient in silica. It has a specific gravity of 3.95 to 4.1 and is insoluble and infusible. In color it ranges from white, through red and green, to black. Ruby and sapphire are gem varieties of corundum. Corundum is supplied to industry as closely graded grain.2 The coarser products (10 to 24-mesh) are used largely for snagging wheels in the steel-castings industry, while the finer grades (from 70-mesh down to flours) find a wide application in the polishing of lenses and for other uses in the optical trade. All sizes of corundum grain are in close competition with synthetic abrasives such as carborundum and alundum. In some fields of application the artificial product is superior to the natural grain but not in all. The shape of the particle and its behavior under conditions of actual use determine its sphere of employment. A method is presented for calculating the pressure depletion performance of a gas-condensate reservoir from the original reservoir fluid composition using the laboratory determined pressure-production history and retrograde liquid accumulation as guides. Equilibrium vaporization ratios for this calculation were modified from published data until the calculated dew point pressure and retrograde liquid accumulation agreed with the values observed in the laboratory. The calculated results are compared with the produced gas composition determined by low temperature analysis during constant volume laboratory experiments of pressure depletion behavior. This comparison shows that the calculation procedure is adequate for determination of gas phase composition. Data from field separation tests in low temperature separators are presented which verify the applicability of published equilibrium vaporization ratios for a wide range of separator conditions. INTRODUCTION A reliable prediction of the pressure depletion performance of a gas-condensate reservoir is necessary in determining reserves and evaluating field separation methods. The predicted performance is also used in planning future operations and studying the economics of projects for increasing liquid recovery. Because the flow of fluid in a volumetric gas-condensate reservoir is usually single phase flow, the pressure-depletion per-formake is primarily a function of the phase behavior of the reservoir fluid. The properties of a gas-condensate system of major importance are: (1) compressibility factor at reservoir temperature and pressure; (2) dew point pressure; (3) composition changes of the vapor phase with pressure depletion; (4) recovery of original in-place hydrocarbons at any pressure; and (5) retrograde condensate accumulation. These properties are most generally determined by a pressure depletion-type experiment on recombined separator gas and liquid samples in the laboratory. ldeally the pressure-depletion performance can be calculated from the composition of the original reservoir fluid if the reservoir temperature and initial pressure are known.1,2,3 It has been reported "... comparison of such computations with depletion-type ex-periments on recombined samples in the laboratory have yielded results that appeared to be entirely adequate.". The success of such calculations is determined by the equilibrium vaporization ratios chosen, especially those for the higher boiling point hydrocarbons. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method for computing the change in composition of the vapor phase during pressure depletion by production using laboratory determined properties of the system to guide the calculation and to illustrate the use of the method with data from the Cockfield "D" sand of Washington field, St. Landry Parish, La. Results of field tests and laboratory analysis are included. As a result of this reservoir fluid study, a cycling program has been evaluated, the fidd has been unitized, and the cycling started in July, 1956.

The solubilities of the transition metals from scundium to nickel, inclusive, in liquid cadmium were determined by sampling saturated solutions. At 400°C these solubilities (ppm) are:Sc, Co, 22; Ni, 12000. Relative partial molal enthalpies and excess partial molal entropies at infinite dilution for the solutes Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co are compared zoitlz similar data for the post-transition metals. Three new intermetallic phases, ScCd,, TiCd, and Ti,Cd, encozaztered in the course of this work, are reported. Measurements of the solubility of the 3-d transition metals in liquid cadmium have been reported' only for iron. The present measurements for the entire series were made as an aid to the study of the systematics of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and sampling techniques used for the solubility determinations were similar to those described by Martin etal.' Temperatures were measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple sheathed in recrystallized alumina and immersed in the solution. The thermocouple was recalibrated periodically during the course of the investigation. Thermocouple voltages were measured to the neares 0.01 mv with a Rubicon model 2732 potentiometer. A scaled-down version of the apparratus, in which the total metal charge was about 90 g, was employed to measure the solubility of scandium. Two-mm ID Vycor filter pipets were used to sample the scandium-cadmiurn solutions; the samples weighed about 2g- Cadmium with a minimum purity of 99.95 pct was used; the only impurities detected spectrochem-ically were C'u and Mg, both less than 10 ppm. The purities of the other metals were: scandium, 99.9 pct; titanium. 99.92 pct; vanadium, 99.9 pct; chromium, 99).99 pct; manganese, 99.9+ pct; iron, 99.90 pct; cobalt, 99.95 pct; and nickel, 99.96 pct. Solidified melts were routinely analyzed spectro-graphically. No significant contamination by the crucible, sampling pipets, or other materials of construction was observed. The entire specimen obtained by sampling was dissolved to preclude analytical errors due to segregation on cooling. Colorimetric methods3 were used for the analyses of cobalt (2-nitroso-l-naphthol), manganese (permanganate), nickel (dimethylglyoxime), titanium (peroxide), and vanadium (thiocyanate).4 Chromium, iron, and scandium were neutron-irradiated to produce The dissolved samples were gamma-counted to determine solute concentration.For the separation of intermediate phases from cadmium-rich alloys selective leaching by saturated ammonium nitrate solutions was employed. The concentration of cadmium in the successive leaches was followed polarographically and the process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. For the further investigation of intermediate phases 1/4- in. diam powder compacts were pressed at 80,000 psi and annealed in argon at 315" to 330°C for 10 days. Larger quantities of alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum capsules heated in a rocking furnace.

DEVELOPMENT of the cement industry in Mexico began some 40 years ago. It has gradually reached great importance in the economic life of the country and has contributed greatly to the technical and economical advances which have been so noteworthy, particularly during the last 15 years. From a modest start, the industry now comprises 18 cement-producing plants having a potential annual capacity of approximately 14 million bbl. About half the plants were built and equipped with secondhand machinery during the last world war when no new machinery could be procured. They will hardly attain full production before being modernized and reconditioned, a job now under way in several of the plants. At present, the yearly consumption is only about 8 to 9 million bbl but is steadily increasing. This is only a fraction of the cement consumed in the U.S.A., which is about 250 million bbl per year, although on the basis of consumption per capita per year, the figure is 1/3 bbl for Mexico and 1 2/3 bbl for the U.S.A. Cement consumption in Mexico is well above the average of all other Latin American countries, with the exception of the Argentine, and considering the potentialities and undeveloped riches of Mexico, the road construction and irrigation works, it is fair to assume that the Mexican cement industry will still prosper and expand in spite of temporary setbacks in the future caused by local events of economic or political nature. Portland cement is manufactured by burning a mixture of raw materials, one of which is mainly composed of calcium carbonates and the other of aluminum silicates. The most typical materials answering this description are limestone and clay, both of which occur in Mexico in many varieties. To be usable for cement manufacture limestone should contain at least 77 to 80 pct calcium carbonate. Lower grade limestone can be used for cement manufacture only if the lime content is increased by the beneficiation process, which has not yet been adopted by the Mexican cement industry. Most of the limestone used by Mexican cement plants has a calcium carbonate content of 90 to 95 pct and therefore requires addition of one or several correction materials. A typical composition of raw mix for cement manufacture is 85 pct limestone and 15 pct shale, clay or volcanic materials. Occasionally it is necessary to add a smaller amount of sand or other siliceous material to increase the silica ratio in the raw mix. Likewise, it is sometimes necessary to add 1 or 2 pct iron ore to facilitate fusion in the kiln and to obtain proper relation between alumina and iron oxide. After calcining and

SEVERAL techniques have been evaluated for cooling the throat area of rocket-nozzle inserts to prevent erosion or fracture of the inserts during exposure to high operating temperatures and pressures. Self-cooled composites, such as infiltrated tungsten, have shown considerable promise for these applications. These composites can be fabricated by infiltrating the refractory matrix with a lower-melting metal or non-metal which is insoluable in tungsten. During firing, the lower-melting substance undergoes a series of continuous endothermic phase changes which absorb sufficient heat to maintain the nozzle matrix material at or below a safe operating temperature. At present, the state-of-the-art has reached a point where the refractory matrix density and microstruc-ture have been established as the critical parameters to be controlled for optimum self-cooled performance.'" Nondestructive testing has been utilized to ensure that porous tungsten billets were of uniform density and free from cracks or other defects prior to fabrication into rocket nozzle inserts. Ultrasonic-velocity techniques have been employed because of their reliability and reproducibility. The purpose of this note is to present and interpret the test data developed for porous tungsten matrices. For evaluation purposes, tungsten powders with Fisher subsieve sizes of approximately 4 and 18 p have been obtained for study from four commercial sources: the General Electric Co., Wah Chang Corp., Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., and Kennametal, Inc. Porous tungsten matrices were fabricated from the powders by hot pressing in induction-heated graphite die assemblies. Typical billets ranged from 3 in. diam, 2 in, high to 5 in. diam, 5 in. high. The ultrasonic-velocity measurement technique employed was through transmission, pulse echo at a frequency of 1.0 mc using matched barium titanate crystal transducers. The testing equipment included a pulsed ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, a specimen holder, and an oscilloscope, as shown in Fig. 1. The porous tungsten thickness was measured to i 0.0005 in, with precision micrometers while the oscilloscope achieved 0.02 psec time measurement accuracy. The time for a sound wave to pass through the billet, the bulk wave velocity, was calculated to 0.5 pct using Eq. [l]: V-} where V = bulk wave velocity, in. per psec, T = specimen thickness, in., and / = time, psec. To develop inspection standards, the bulk density of a porous tungsten billet was determined by the ASTM water-immersion technique.3 The ultrasonic-velocity measurements were completed at seventeen positions for each billet and averaged to develop a characteristic standard velocity for a particular tungsten powder at several density levels. Declining Productivity Index, as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. If not recognized, it may be interpreted as representing an unsettled or unstable condition in a producing well. It forms the basis of a number of predictions as to future performance compared with the performance of wells in which the productivity index does not decline. The nost important of these are that: (I) the rate of oil production will decline more rapidly, (2) the gas-oil ratio will usually increase abnormally, (3) the amount of water ultimately produced will be negligible, if any, (4) stop-cocking will increase current production and decrease gas-oil ratio. When such relative well performance is indicated, it follows that certain reservoir performance and operating practices may be anticipated: (I) disappointing recovery, (2) longer natural flow, (3) no active water drive, (4) better evaluation of acidizing, shooting and reworking, (5) intermittent operation of wells, (6) smaller pumping equipment required. It is significant that the basis of these important predictions is bottom-hole pressure tests that can be made immediately after completion of the wells. Introduction "'Productivity index" is the number of barrels of oil produced per day per pound per square inch of differential pressure between the reservoir and the bottom of the well. "Declining Productivity Index," as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. Productivity index can be determined only when the rate of production can be stabilized. In most wells the rate of production and bottom-hole pressure are easily stabilized to give a constant productivity index for a period of many hours. A few produce so erratically as to preclude probability of an acceptable test in the usual sense. A satisfactory productivity index can be determined in some wells only by gauging the production accurately by hours, measuring the bottom-hole pressure continuously, and from these data calculating the productivity index for successive hours. Such figures frequently will have a decreasing value—that is, a declining productivity index—and when plotted on double. logarithmic cross-section paper with productivity index as ordinate and time as abscissa will be a straight-line curve. The angle between the curve and the abscissa is referred to as the rate of decline. Declining productivity index may appear to be the result of change in permeability to oil due to decreasing saturation of oil and increasing saturation of gas in the reservoir. It is possible that such is in fact the cause, but if so, more is involved than merely relative saturation of oil and gas. This seems evident because the rate of decline in productivity index is substantially the same regardless of the pro-

The gel strength and viscosity of two different suspensions of fractionated montmorillonite clay were measured by using a Stormer viscosimeter and Farm V-G meter. The amount of sodium poly-phosphate (sodium bexametaphosphate, sodium tetraphosphate and sodium acid pyrophosphate) adsorbed by the clay particles was determined. A relationship seems to exist between the amount of polyphosphate adsorbed and the nature of the surface, edge or plate, assumed to be the principal sites for selective adsorption. Reduction in viscosity and gel strength was found to be directly related to the adsorption. Both chemical bonding and physical adsorption seem involved in defloccula-tion Some indication of the axial ratios of particles of .l- to .04-micron average size is possible though study of the adsorption mechanism. INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE A knowledge of surface areas of clay particles in a suspension and a precise determination of phosphate adsorption should provide a basis for a better understanding of reduction in viscosity and gel strength caused by molecularly dehydrated phosphates. The purpose of this investigation was to study the adsorption of sodium polyphosphates on suspensions of fractionated sodium montmorillonite. Although there is considerable uncertainty regarding details of the structure of montmorillonite, a generally accepted one is that suggested by Hofmann, Endell and wi1m.l The structure shown in Fig. 1 is an idealized one, and Marshall2 has postulated that it is possible for several isomorphous replacements to occur. Thus, aluminum may replace silicon, in which case an exchangeable cation would go along with the aluminum to neutralize what would otherwise be a net negative charge on the structure. There is disagreement among various investigators as to the particle size and shape of montmorillonite clays. Marshall2 reported the following results for the mean lateral dimensions of a Putnam clay (montmorillonite)— 3,730 A° for particles having average diameters ranging from 500 to 1,000 A, and 750 A° for those with an average diameter less than 200 A. The latter particles were estimated at 50A°in thickness, which would correspond to a stack of five unit cell layers. On the other hand, Shaw3 has interpreted micrographs as indicating that particles of montmorillonite ire readilv broken down to the individual cell layers by dispersion in water. Brindley4 and Merings indicate the ultimate particles to be of the order of 300 A° in mean lateral dimension. Van Olphen6 suggested the thickness of particles at four to five unit cell layers. It was suggested also that this number tends to become smaller with increasing dilution. Recently, Kahn and Lewis7 determined the size of sodium montmorillonite particles in aqueous suspension from electro-optical bi-refringence decay curves. The

PREVIOUS determinations1,2,3 of the texture of magnesium and its alloys have shown only slight variations in the principal features of the structure. This investigation presents pole figures for magnesium and two of its alloys, in which differences of some magnitude will be shown. Schmid and Wassermann have considered the texture of magnesium in analogy with that of zinc-also a hexagonal lattice. Whereas the zinc texture is said to be derived primarily through basal slip and secondarily through {102}† twinning, the {102} twinning is considered impossible at the later stages of the rolling in magnesium because of its smaller axial ratio. This state of affairs appears reasonable for pure magnesium, but for alloy textures the situation is more complex. A double orientation similar to that found in zinc has been reported by J. D. Hanawalt,4 and the addition of small amounts of calcium to magnesium and its alloys to produce a double texture was noted by J. C. McDonald.5 The pole figures of this investigation, using an improved X-ray technique, show these various textures. The dependence of directional properties of rolled sheet on modifications of texture is well recognized. Correlation of physical properties with existing texture should be even more significant if quantitative valuations are attached to the various areas on the pole figures. Such a quantitative technique is developed herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two alloys were used, besides high-purity magnesium. In each case, the metal was extruded to bars 32 in. thick and hot-rolled to a thickness of about 0.075 in. It had been established previously that such a reduction was more than sufficient to eliminate the extruded structure. The rolling proceeded in the same direction as that of the extrusion, without any cross rolling. The temperatures corresponded to normal commercial practice, averaging around 600°F. A unique method of preparing the sample was developed in this work. Instead of using a flat specimen, a stem of the metal was cut out of the rolled sheet in the desired direction (rolling direction) as shown in Fig. 2. From a sheet of 0.075 to 0.065-in. gauge, the stem was cut to a square cross section with a jeweler's saw, rounded with a file and polishing paper to a diameter of 0.060 in, and evenly etched in dilute hydrochloric acid to a diameter of 0.038 ± 0.001 in. In this way, a cylinder of the original sheet with its axis in the desired direction was produced. By using this type of specimen for the pin-point pictures, any variance in the absorption of the diffracted beam at the various angular settings of the specimen, was completely eliminated.*

SOME ten years ago the writer1 made a survey of college catalogues to determine what sort of training geologists were receiving in basic sciences. In the light of this compilation and subsequent experience, he made the statement at the 1939 meeting of the Institute that apparently only in schools offering a curriculum in geological engineering or in the geological option of mining engineering curricula could geologists hope to receive the training advocated by Hubbert.2 In the former study, schools of engineering were excluded because the preparation was known beforehand. The present study aims to consider engineering schools in an effort to determine not only what basic studies are required but what use is made of them in geological courses of the third and fourth years. The present study combined the method of consulting catalogues with a questionnaire. Letters were mailed to officials responsible for supervision of mineral industries curricula requesting information on: (I) the extent to which the engineering preparation of the first two years is actually used in the work of the last two; (2) the extent to which the engineering of the last two years is used in courses in geological engineering or geology; and (3) whether geologists or geological engineers teach descriptively or analytically. Both methods of securing information are open to criticism; the former on the basis of the incomplete information supplied by university catalogues concerning prerequisites and curricula and the latter on the ground that the questions may be phrased poorly or given insufficient consideration by replying officials. Fifty-six questionnaires were mailed and 39 (70 per cent) replies were received. Of the replies, 6 (11.3 per cent) were from colleges of liberal arts unconnected with engineering schools, 11 (20 per cent) were from schools having curricula in geological engineering and 22 (39 per cent) were from departments of mining engineering. The number of replies and their distribution were satisfactory in spite of the receipt of only six from liberal arts colleges. It should be understood that the universities of which the catalogues were examined were not necessarily the same in both compilations. No departments that are admittedly or known to be acting solely as service departments were recorded in the second study. Table I shows that all professional schools require mathematics through calculus, whereas only 7 per cent of the liberal arts curricula expect the same level of preparation; only 73 per cent require trigonometry and 40 per cent college algebra. The proportion of geological engineering curricula requiring differential equations is higher than mining. All of the engineering schools require general and analytical chemistry, whereas only 77 per cent of liberal arts curricula require general and 18 per cent analytical. This paper describes the milling practice and operating results of the recently installed heavy-media separation plant of Barton Mines Corporation, the world's largest producer of garnet. This pioneer application of heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes for the beneficiation of a nonmetallic ore is unique in many respects, the details of which will be apparent from the following presentation. Characteristics of the Ore The property is on Gore Mountain, 5 miles west of the village of North Creek, New York, and 11 miles by road. The altitude of the mine is approximately 2800 feet. The valuable mineral, garnet, occurs in a surface deposit, the ore body being about ¾, mile long and varying in width from 50 to 300 ft. The garnet, principally almandite, Fe3Al2 (SiO4)3, occurs in a metamorphic rock of uncertain origin. The gangue mineral is principally hornblende, which constitutes from 40 to 80 per cent of the rock. The remainder of the gangue is divided between plagioclase feldspars and hypersthene, with smaller amounts of biotite, apatite and pyrite. The garnet content of the ore body varies from 5 to 20 per cent of the mass and averages about 10 to I2 per cent. The garnet occurs as crystals, mostly imperfectly developed, known locally as "pockets." These crys- tals vary in size from a fraction of an inch to a foot or more in diameter. Occasionally crystals have been found up to 30 and 36 in. in diameter but they average 4 to 6 inches. Nearly every crystal of garnet is surrounded by a rim of coarsely crystalline hornblende. The quarry faces are striking in appearance, showing crimson-red garnet crystals with their coal black rims scattered over a grayish black background. The specific gravity of the garnet is 3.8 to 4.1 while that of the hornblende ordinarily is 3-07 to 3.24. Some specimens of very dense hornblende have been found with a specific gravity as high as 3.40. The garnet crystals are laminated in structure, and readily cleave into flat, tabular pieces with sharp, chisel-like edges. Even when crushed to a very fine size, the garnet retains this flat, sharp, slivery grain shape. This characteristic, together with its hardness and toughness, gives it its value as an abrasive- Former Operations Mining operations have been carried on for 60 years. The oxidation, which affected the garnet only slightly, made possible the removal of the garnet from the rock by hand after it was blasted down, using small hand picks. The following analysis was an outgrowth of a midterm examination given by one of the authors (M.J.M) in a course entitled Metallurgy 541 "Applications of Dislocation Theory'' at Iowa State University. Fig, l(a) shows the three-layer sequence of atoms lying in the (111) plane which characterizes the fully ordered AB3 fcc crystal, i.e., LI2 type. If any two-layer sequence of close-packed planes is constructed from Fig. 16)' the structure would be hcp of the DO,, type. Consider for convenience that the circled atoms lie in the plane of the drawing while those shown square and triangular lie immediately above and below the plane of the drawing, respectively. It has already been shown' that if a Shockley partial dislocation is passed over the plane of the paper, then the square atoms in Fig. 1(a) are displaced from their original positions as shown by the arrows in Fig. l(b). Not only is an intrinsic fault produced but the crystal is simultaneously disordered across the slip plane. In particular, 2AB bonds are converted to 1AA and 1BB bonds when referred to the area outlined by the solid line in Fig. 1. If, on the other hand, a Shockley partial is allowed to pass immediately above and immediately below the plane of the paper so as to displace the atoms in opposite directions as shown in Fig. l(c), an extrinsic fault is producedZ and twice the amount of disorder is introduced into the crystal as compared to the dislocation-produced intrinsic fault, if only broken first-neighbor bonds are counted. If an intrinsic stacking fault is produced by removing a close-packed plane of atoms in Fig. l(a) and displacing the two adjacent planes by 1/3a0[111], no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. Similarly, if an extra half plane of atoms with the same arrangement as any of those shown in Fig. l(a) is inserted between any two planes in the same figure, then an extrinsic stacking fault is produced in which once again no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. The latter two faults are bounded by Frank partial dislocations. Since, at least in the alloy CU3AU,3 nearly all of the ordering energy resides in the first nearest-neighbor interactions, intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults and associated APB's of the Frank type are expected to have significantly lower energy than those of the Shockley type in CusAu in particular and quite likely in L1, and DO19 type alloys in general. The term "total operation" is meant to include problems that cannot be answered from the standpoint of either the blast furnace or the open hearth separately but must be studied by considering the interrelations of these two processes. There are other ways of expressing this idea, such as reference to the blast furnace and the open hearth as an integrated process or by emphasizing the interrelation and interaction of the two processes. Much progress has been made in metallurgy and other fields by breaking complicated processes and reactions into simpler parts and studying each of these intensively. This intensive study frequently is done under the controlled conditions of the laboratory experiment. The entire process is understood better by this specialized study of each of its parts. This procedure is so satisfactory that an understanding of unit operations is a fundamental requirement of chemical engineering. Much discussion of the open-hearth process is in terms of one heat or one furnace. By this is meant that the conclusions apply to one furnace, wherever it may be. Furnaces seldom occur singly; they are located in groups and these groups are located in steel plants having characteristic blast-furnace equipment. Problems that are affected by the number of furnaces operating, by the number of blast furnaces in the plant and by the fact that the open- hearth shop is dependent on the bla furnace capacity rather than on its o needs for the amount of iron available among those which, in contrast to "u operations," we have chosen to call "to operations." Many of these problems, such as cha ing delays and the general mechani problem of material handling, are familiar that merely to define " total op ations" brings them to mind. These pr lems are of such importance that alrea they have received careful thought 2 study and probably will merit furt study. As will be shown later, these mechan problems are so intimately related metallurgical problems of total operati that the effect of certain changes cannot ascribed with certainty to either a mech ical or a metallurgical cause entirely. Equilibrium vaporization ratios were obtained for light hydrocarbons, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in a reservoir fluid containing 35 mole per cent hydrogen sulfide. The data cover the range from 700 to 2500 psia at 154°F. The results of this study are compared with results obtained by other investigators on systems containing less hydrogen sulfide. When large amounts of hydrogen sulfide are present, the equilibrium vaporization ratios for ethane and heavier hydrocarbons are greater than the ratios for systems containing little or no hydrogen sulfide. Large amounts of hydrogen sulfide have the reverse effect on the ratios for methane. Routine PVT studies were performed on the reservoir fluid including flash and differential liberations of the dissolved gas. The pressure-volume relationships of the saturated fluid were also determined. It is shown that the use of published correlations on physical properties of reservoir .fluids can lead to gross errors when applied to systems containing large amounts of hydrogen sulfide. INTRODUCTION Equilibrium vaporization ratios for various components in naturally occurring crude oil and condensate systems have been reported in the literature.1,2,3,4 Recently, several papers have been published with emphasis on non-hydrocarbon components such as nitro- gen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.5,6,7,8,9 The increased discovery of reservoir fluids having high concentrations of these non-hydrocarbon components, particularly hydrogen sulfide, has created a need for a further study of their phase behavior. Equilibrium vaporization ratios are known to vary with pressure, temperature, and overall composition of the system.'" It was anticipated that ratios for systems containing large amounts of hydrogen sulfide would differ from the ratios for systems containing small amounts of hydrogen sulfide. Therefore, the present work was undertaken in order to obtain reliable equilibrium vaporization ratios for the reservoir-fluid in question. PROCEDURE The procedure followed was evolved after considerable experimentation on methods of handling the very sour crude. It was found that drying agents (e.g. CaCl2 and CaSO4) absorbed an appreciable amount of hydrogen sulfide from the gas used to prepare the recombined samples. The concentration of hydrogen sulfide dropped as much as 10 mole per cent in a single pass through a 3-ft drying tube. It was also found that when undried gas was agitated with mercury in the PVT cell, a black scum, believed to be mercuric sulfide, was formed and the hydrogen sulfide content of the gas dropped several mole per cent. Because composition changes during a run could not be tolerated, separation of the mercury and sour fluid was necessary. In order to effect this separation, a stainless steel piston, equipped with Teflon O-rings, was placed in the PVT cell between the mercury and the sour fluid. DEVELOPMENT of the cement industry in Mexico began some 40 years ago. It has gradually reached great importance in the economic life of the country and has contributed greatly to the technical and economical advances which have been so noteworthy, particularly during the last 15 years. From a modest start, the industry now comprises 18 cement-producing plants having a potential annual capacity of approximately 14 million bbl. About half the plants were built and equipped with second-hand machinery during the last world war when no new machinery could be procured. They will hardly attain full production before being modernized and reconditioned, a job now under way in several of the plants. At present, the yearly consumption is only about 8 to 9 million bbl but is steadily increasing. This is only a fraction of the cement consumed in the U.S.A., which is about 250 million bbl per year, although on the basis of consumption per capita per year, the figure is 1/3 bbl for Mexico and 1 2/3 bbl for the U.S.A. Cement consumption in Mexico is well above the average of all other Latin American countries, with the exception of the Argentine, and considering the potentialities and undeveloped riches of Mexico, the road construction and irrigation works, it is fair to assume that the Mexican cement industry will still prosper and expand in spite of temporary setbacks in the future caused by-local events of economic or political nature. Portland cement is manufactured by burning a mixture of raw materials, one of which is mainly composed of calcium carbonates and the other of aluminum silicates. The most typical materials answering this description are limestone and clay, both of which occur in Mexico in many varieties. To be usable for cement manufacture limestone should contain at least 77 to 80 pct calcium carbonate. Lower grade limestone can be used for cement manufacture only if the lime content is increased by the beneficiation process, which has not yet been adopted by the Mexican cement industry. Most of the limestone used by Mexican cement plants has a calcium carbonate content of 90 to 95 pct and therefore requires addition of one or several correction materials. A typical composition of raw mix for cement manufacture is 85 pct limestone and 15 pct shale, clay or volcanic materials. Occasionally it is necessary to add a smaller amount of sand or other siliceous material to increase the silica ratio in the raw mix. Likewise, it is sometimes necessary to add 1 or 2 pct iron ore to facilitate fusion in the kiln and to obtain proper relation between alumina and iron oxide. After calcining and

THE disseminated lead district of Southeast Missouri lies 70 miles south of St. Louis. The only metal of economic importance in the ore is lead, but minor amounts occur of iron, zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, silver and cadmium. These minor metals, as might be expected, tend to concentrate in both the flotation and table middlings. In the past, some zinc has been recovered by differential flotation. The silver and cadmium tend to associate with the zinc, and some recovery is made of these two metals at the smelter. The lead occurs as galena, or lead sulphide. The minor metals are also present as sulphides. The presence of oxidized lead is suspected, but has not been definitely proved. The gangue is chiefly dolomitic limestone, with small amounts of sandstone and shaly glauconitic and chloritic minerals. The ore contains about 3.25 per cent lead, occurring as galena disseminated through the gangue. Some of the galena is very finely disseminated, and the mineral in the gravity tailings, or chat, is seldom or never in the free state. The method of treatment of the ore has been evolved over a period of 75 years; hence probably is not far from correct. The milling processes have tended toward simplification during the past 15 years, but recoveries have never been sacrificed for the sake of simplicity. In many cases, simplification of flowsheets has led to better recoveries and operating economies. A simplified flowsheet is shown in Fig. I. The St. Joseph Lead Co. operates four mills in the Flat River district, with a normal total capacity of about 21,000 tons per day, divided as follows: Federal mill, 11,000 tons; Leadwood mill, 4500 tons; Desloge mill, 3400 tons and Bonne Terre mill 2400 tons. The methods of concentration used at these plants are similar in principle; they differ mainly in details and in the type and size of the equipment used. The process of concentration may be divided into five main steps; i.e., dry crushing, wet grinding, classification with its attendant desliming, tabling and flotation. A brief description of these processes will be given, noting important differences in the various plants, and also noting the more important changes or developments of the past few years. DRY CRUSHING The run-of-mine ore is hoisted in skips, the capacity of these skips ranging from 2 ¾ tons to 8 ¼ tons. At the Desloge plant, the ore is hoisted in 2-ton mine cars on self-dumping cages. All ore is hoisted at shafts adjacent to the various crushing plants, no ore being transported on the surface. Primary breaking at all the mills is accomplished with 9E Telsmith breakers.
